00:01Four Ugandan farmers are taking on French energy giant Total Energies in what
00:07campaigners are calling a landmark legal challenge over East Africa's
00:11controversial crude oil pipeline. The case being heard in Britain targets the
00:16$5.6 billion East African crude oil pipeline which is due to begin
00:21operating in 2027. The 1,400 kilometre pipeline will carry oil from Uganda to
00:27Tanzania and is expected to become the world's longest heated crude oil pipeline.
00:33The farmers argue the project violates Uganda's environmental, climate and
00:37constitutional laws. Backed by campaign group Avaaz, they are seeking an
00:42injunction that could halt oil from flowing through the pipeline. Environmental
00:47groups have labelled it a carbon bomb, warning it could generate hundreds of
00:52millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over its lifetime. They have
00:57also raised concerns about drilling near Uganda's Mershison Falls National Park
01:02and the risk of damage to sensitive ecosystems. Total Energies says it has
01:07adopted strict environmental safeguards and is working to minimise the project's impact.
