00:00West African leaders approved the construction of a gas pipeline linking Nigeria and Morocco at an ECOWAS summit in Sierra
00:07Leone.
00:08The roughly 6,000-kilometre pipeline will run through 13 countries along Africa's Atlantic coast,
00:14carrying Nigerian gas to Morocco and then on to the Mangrave Europe pipeline.
00:19ECOWAS Chair Julius Madabio said the agreement is already signed,
00:23while both Morocco and Nigeria's oil and gas companies say the project is designed to link West Africa's gas resources
00:30to major regional markets.
00:32The next steps include setting up a project company in Casablanca and a governing authority in Abuja.
00:39Before investors are brought in, construction is expected to begin in 2028 with fast gas deliveries targeted for 2031.
00:47The project is estimated to cost about $27 billion.
00:51The project was first proposed in 2016 and its revival has been driven in part by Algeria's 2022 decision to
01:00stop supplying gas to Spain via Morocco
01:02after diplomatic ties between Algiers and Rabat broke down.
