Justice minister Jake Richards says the government is having to take "difficult decisions" on releasing some prisoners early to manage capacity in prisons, but that in his words, those receiving the "most serious sentences" aren't subject to an early release scheme. 00:00Well, those receiving what's called extended determinants sentences, so the most serious sentences implemented by the judiciary, they are not
00:08subject to this scheme at all.
00:10That's important. And despite the recommendation of the independent sentencing review, we carved those offenders out.
00:18But look, I'm not pretending that there aren't difficult decisions here, but I want to be very clear to your
00:21viewers.
00:22If we didn't make difficult decisions now, we would face a prison capacity crisis in October or November this year.
00:27And that would mean having to let out people in a much more chaotic fashion without the safeguards in place
00:32in our community.
