00:30Hello and welcome to Kent Tonight, live here on KMTV.
00:33I'm Chloe Brewster and here are your top stories on Monday the 6th of July.
00:38Mexico meets Maidstone.
00:40Our sports reporter was on the ground in the county town
00:43for what's been called the best World Cup game since the 60s.
00:48It was a bit of a golf fest, wasn't it?
00:50But, uh, I'm happy.
00:53And celebrating Kent.
00:55Thousands flocked to this year's Kent County show
00:57to celebrate what makes Kent, well, Kent.
01:00It sort of helps to keep money within the county.
01:02It showcases what we're good at.
01:04We are the Garden of England.
01:05And valor for our veterans.
01:08Aylesford Charity becomes the first to join
01:10government's new £50 million veteran support scheme.
01:14I spent 25 years in the military.
01:17Seeing these things come to bear is incredibly powerful.
01:30But first, our top story.
01:32England managed to stay in the World Cup last night
01:34after a thrilling game watched around Kent
01:37and the rest of the country.
01:39Our reporter, Finn McDiarmid, was out in Maidstone
01:41getting the county town's predictions for the game
01:43and was on the ground giving us the play-by-play.
01:53Well, England and their fans seem to have the odds
01:55stacked against them.
01:56For the team facing Mexico at the Azteca Stadium
01:58and for the fans, a 1am kick-off
02:00that would go well into the morning.
02:03Well, the time is 11.30
02:05and as you can see, it's pretty quiet here in Maidstone.
02:09But give it a few more hours as we go into the earlier hours
02:12of the morning and I'm sure it'll get a lot livelier.
02:15But it all depends on the scoreline.
02:17So we're going to go to a pub, watch along with the England game
02:20and then see what's going to happen here on Maidstone's streets.
02:24And on those streets, we heard some of the people
02:27of Maidstone's predictions for the game.
02:29It's going to be a bad 2-1 England.
02:33Mexico will go up early, similar to the Congo game.
02:37What's that, sorry?
02:371-0.
02:38I think 1-0 and we'll win on penalties.
02:42I'll go 3-0 England.
02:44Kane Attrick.
02:47Maybe 1-2.
02:49Ask one.
02:532-1 England.
02:54Whose record's going to score?
02:56It's got to be Harry Kane.
02:57Maybe Saka.
02:58I've just seen that he's starting,
02:59so I'm hoping he gets a goal as well.
03:01But the fans would have to wait a little longer
03:03before they could find out if they were right.
03:05Well, the game's been delayed an hour, but that hasn't stopped anyone here.
03:09As you can definitely hear behind me, celebrations are still in full swing.
03:14No stopping here in Maidstone.
03:16We'll see you in another hour when it kicks off.
03:18But it was certainly worth the wait once Jude Bellingham struck his first.
03:26Then his second.
03:30It was a thrilling 90-minute goal fest featuring red cards, penalties for both sides
03:35and 11 minutes of nail-biting stoppage time.
03:39It was a bit of a goal fest, wasn't it?
03:43But I'm happy.
03:44England won.
03:45I'm happy.
03:46We go again.
03:47We've got to win the whole World Cup.
03:48We can go.
03:49We can do this.
03:50As the fans left the pubs across the town,
03:52some stuck around to wave England flags
03:54and there was a Kent police van nearby,
03:57but nothing seemed to occur.
03:59Well, with England now set to face Norway this weekend
04:02at a more reasonable time of 10pm,
04:04hopefully this time the celebrations will be done before the sun is up.
04:08Finn McDermid for Kame TV in Maidstone.
04:14So Finn, we were both there last night.
04:16You don't need to tell me how electric the energy was,
04:19but can you tell the audience what it was like there?
04:21Oh, it was absolutely brilliant.
04:23Many people online have been saying that that game
04:25was one of our best World Cup games since, obviously,
04:28we lifted the trophy back in 1966
04:31and the atmosphere there in Maidstone was absolutely brilliant,
04:34as you might have seen there and as you experienced firsthand.
04:38We were in a packed garden of ashes, I think it was,
04:41and there were pints flying.
04:44You can see a little bit of the beforehand there.
04:46That was out the front before the match actually started.
04:49Can't fall the storm.
04:50Yes, that's how I'd describe it.
04:52I think you and me were sort of realising,
04:54oh, the game's been delayed by an hour, right,
04:56we'll have to wait around a bit.
04:58But that's sort of just the anticipation really increased.
05:00And then, as you can see there,
05:02everyone is glued to those screens.
05:04There's not an eye anywhere else.
05:06It was a really great experience.
05:08And, you know, we dragged ourselves out of bed this morning.
05:13We got back into bed about 5 a.m. this morning,
05:16then back here for nine.
05:18What were people on the ground telling you?
05:20Were other people going to be going into work
05:21or were there a few sickies thrown?
05:23What do you think?
05:23I'm not sure.
05:24I mean, spiritually, I think I'm still in that England shirt.
05:27I've left a piece of my soul back there.
05:29But in speaking to a lot of people,
05:31they mostly seemed to,
05:34they said they were just going to sort of
05:35just go with the flow,
05:37not pull a sickie,
05:38and just try and come in.
05:39I think we spoke to a couple of people
05:41who luckily either were starting work particularly late
05:43or weren't having to worry too much about it.
05:46But, yeah, it was a fun time.
05:49And I think I'll sleep for about a week.
05:52Yeah, I'm looking forward to going to bed after this.
05:54And I'm sure lots of people who are watching are as well.
05:59Explosions could be heard in Ashford today
06:01after a vape is thought to have caused a vehicle fire.
06:06As seen in this video,
06:08plumes of smoke and flames engulfed a council-owned van
06:12which had been parked outside a pub.
06:15Nearby businesses reported the sound of explosions
06:18while some shoppers and workers had to be evacuated.
06:22Ashford Borough Council, which owns the vehicle,
06:25said they were grateful the crew involved had no injuries
06:27and that initial inspections pointed to the fire
06:30being caused by the incorrect disposal of a single-use vape.
06:35One woman has died and another is fighting for her life
06:39after a car hit a tree in Selinge.
06:42Police and paramedics were called around 8.40pm yesterday
06:46following a collision on the A20 Barrow Hill.
06:49A 46-year-old woman,
06:50the passenger of the Mini Cooper involved in the crash,
06:53sadly died at the scene.
06:55The driver, a 44-year-old, was airlifted to a London hospital
06:59where she remains in a life-threatening condition.
07:02Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit
07:04are appealing for anyone who may have seen the collision
07:06to please get in touch.
07:09A woman from Deal fears her stalker will not leave her alone,
07:12as promised,
07:13after he avoided a prison sentence at Canterbury Crown Court.
07:17Hugh Kennedy subjected Vicky Mitford
07:19to four months of harassment
07:21after their five-year relationship ended.
07:23She told the court how he'd repeatedly turn up
07:26at her home and her workplace
07:28and bombard her with messages.
07:31Megan Shaw joined me earlier to tell us more.
07:34So, Meg, thanks for joining me.
07:36What's gone on here?
07:38Absolutely.
07:39So, Hugh Kennedy, who we've got here,
07:41stalked his ex-partner, Vicky Mitford,
07:44for four months.
07:45And after that case,
07:46going to Canterbury Crown Court,
07:48he didn't end up going to prison.
07:50He was instead given a suspended sentence
07:52due to mitigating circumstances.
07:55And then Vicky went and told Kent online
07:57she was afraid that his stalking,
07:59harassing behaviour might continue.
08:02A bit of background information.
08:03Mr Kennedy and Ms Mitford were together for five years,
08:07on and off again,
08:08when the relationship ended for good in October 2023.
08:11And Mr Kennedy started stalking Ms Mitford.
08:15And what were some of the things
08:17that the court heard during this case?
08:20Absolutely.
08:21So, the court heard multiple instances
08:23of quite alarming behaviour from Mr Kennedy,
08:27such as turning up at her home
08:29and her workplace in deal,
08:31antagonising her,
08:33keying her car,
08:34and causing over £1,500 worth of damage,
08:37which we have footage of,
08:39which you can see right now.
08:41The court heard that he stole her passport.
08:44And again, we have footage of him
08:46punching the CCTV camera at her house
08:49while she hid in fear
08:50of this aggressive, threatening behaviour
08:53at a friend's house.
08:54You can even hear an instance
08:56of Mr Kennedy harassing Ms Mitford here.
09:00Yeah, you are.
09:02Well, don't follow me.
09:03You can get right up in my head.
09:05I'm following you.
09:05I'm just asking you
09:06why you actually decided deliberately to...
09:11Because you're horrible to me.
09:12That's the reason why.
09:13I'm a sailor.
09:14But it's not true.
09:15It's a lie.
09:16It's not a lie.
09:17It's what you think is a lie.
09:18But it's not a lie.
09:19It's a lie.
09:19It's not a lie.
09:20It's not a lie.
09:21It's not true.
09:22It's not a lie.
09:23You're being violent towards me.
09:25You're being physically violent towards me.
09:27You're being physically violent towards me now.
09:29You actually can't accept...
09:31You can't accept the fact that you are a narcissist.
09:34I'm walking.
09:36I'm walking away.
09:37You keep telling me.
09:38Yeah.
09:38I'm not walking away towards you.
09:40You're following me.
09:42In connection with this behaviour,
09:44Mr Kennedy was arrested twice.
09:46For the second time,
09:48he was arrested in January
09:49and he was charged with stalking,
09:51assault,
09:51occasioning actual bodily harm
09:53and criminal damage.
09:55The court heard that Mr Kennedy
09:56had suffered a traumatic childhood
09:58and had recently been admitted
10:00to a mental health unit.
10:01Therefore,
10:02he was jailed for nine months,
10:04which was suspended for 18 months.
10:06So he didn't,
10:07you know,
10:07face a prison sentence immediately.
10:09And he was made subject
10:10to a mental health rehabilitation requirement
10:13and an eight-year restraining order.
10:15This was because...
10:17And because of the appropriate custodial sentence
10:20was less than 12 months,
10:21new guidelines issued this year
10:23said that there should be
10:24exceptional circumstances
10:26for not suspending the term.
10:28The judge,
10:29Simon Taylor,
10:30told Miss Mitford,
10:31he understood
10:31she'd be disappointed
10:33with the outcome
10:33but explained he was required
10:35to follow these new guidelines.
10:38The artists behind
10:39a seafront memorial in Dill
10:41has hit back
10:42after it was damaged
10:43less than two months
10:44since it was unveiled.
10:46The bronze sculpture,
10:48which you can see
10:49on your screen now,
10:50was supposed to honour
10:51those who've died at sea,
10:52but was discovered
10:53covered in urine and stains
10:55by passing dogs.
10:58Artist Michael Bennett
10:59was forced to scrub his artwork
11:01to get rid of the markings
11:02and has since asked residents
11:04to keep their dogs away.
11:05Bronze can be stained permanently
11:07if left uncleaned,
11:09prompting questions by the council
11:11on how best to protect it
11:12in the future.
11:16Now that's all
11:17for this part of the show
11:18but coming up
11:19after the break
11:20we'll be discussing
11:21the events
11:22of the annual
11:23Kent County show
11:24held at Detling Showgrounds
11:26but we'll be hearing
11:27from local business owners
11:28and visitors
11:28about why they decided
11:30to head out in the sun
11:31this weekend
11:31to celebrate
11:32the best of Kent's produce.
11:34We'll also be taking a look
11:36at some more sports news
11:37as a little teaser
11:38ahead of this week's episode
11:39of Invicta Sports
11:40coming up
11:40right after Kent tonight.
11:42We'll also learn
11:43about a local charity
11:45becoming the first
11:45post-military service
11:47to join the government's
11:48new £50 million
11:49Valour scheme.
11:51We'll also be taking a look
11:52at weather.
11:52All that and more
11:53after this very short break.
24:26The Royal British Veterans Enterprise has become the first VALA recognised centre in the country.
24:34This is a new government scheme that aims to tackle postcode lotteries and streamline access to support for local veterans.
24:44The Valour support system lets veterans access help across the southeast.
24:51So if that be housing, employment or more, all they need to do is just come to a centre like
24:57this and get in touch with the staff to get the help they need.
25:01This grand unveiling was done by the Minister of Veterans and People, Calvin Bailey.
25:08Today's been incredible because getting the chance to see people that are working both in the sector and then benefiting
25:16from the sector has been incredibly humbling.
25:19And as a veteran myself, I spent 25 years in the military.
25:24Seeing these things come to bear is incredibly powerful and I feel really humbled and privileged.
25:31Our BVE, we've been supporting veterans for over 100 years across the southeast and this will help us extend our
25:39reach and help more veterans.
25:40We want more veterans to know about us, want more veterans to access our services and we hope now that
25:46we're a recognised Valour Centre that you'll get in touch and seek any support or help that you might need.
25:51More Valour centres are planned to join the system by the end of the year, but for the ex-service
25:58people of Owlsford, this scheme may very well provide the boost they need.
26:05Henry Luck for KMTV in Owlsford.
26:10You've been watching Kent tonight live here on KMTV.
26:13There's more news made just for Kent throughout the evening, including Invictus Sport coming up right after this.
26:19And also you can look on our social medias.
26:21We've got more stuff from behind the scenes of me and Finn watching the World Cup yesterday.
26:26That's plenty of content for you to catch up on.
