More than 8 thousand homes and businesses across Kent have been hit by water supply issues after pipe bursts and high demand during the hot weather.

South East Water customers in Challock near Ashford have said they are used to low pressure at this point, with some homes getting water after days of outages and have had to choose between flushing toilets and showering.

Finn Macdiarmid reports.

00:00Across the county today it's been from one extreme to another, with multiple water supply
00:04issues in areas like Herne Bay, Canterbury, Cranbrook and villages around Challock, near
00:08Ashford.
00:09Now while some have had their water supplies returned, like those in Herne Bay, issues
00:13with critically low storage have meant flow can be spotty.
00:16In the village of Challock, they aren't strangers to water issues, with the village seeing problems
00:20in previous years and locals saying they've just had to get used to it.
00:24I got up this morning, turned the tap on, no, yesterday was nothing all day, got up
00:27this morning, turned the tap on, no, still nothing.
00:30Little notes on the WhatsApp group, there was a bit overnight, so we think, right, okay,
00:34so the cistern's filled up upstairs, so do you have a shower or save that for the loo upstairs?
00:42So we saved it for the loo, thinking that if they're not delivering us any more water here
00:46today, then maybe it's going to come back on, and it has now, so the first thing when
00:50it came back on was put the dishwasher on, put the washing machine on, have a shower,
00:54you know, it's not easy, it's not easy.
00:58Now here in Challock and the surrounding villages, there have been water issues since Saturday,
01:02but as you can see, it is a bit quieter here today, but there are still people struggling,
01:06and not just here in Challock and the surrounding villages.
01:09There's also low storage tank supplies in Herne Bay, power issues in Whitstable, and low
01:13pressure in the Benenden area, these are all contributing to the water supply issues.
01:17In fact, there's five different water supply stations currently active, Challock Village
01:21Hall, the Weald Sports Centre in Cranbrook, the Sainsbury's in Herne Bay at Altera Business
01:26Park, Story Park and Ride in Canterbury, and Winsheep Park and Ride.
01:30Locals have also commented they're unsure of any changes within South East Water, and that
01:34to them, it all feels the same.
01:36I didn't know there was a new bus really, so, yeah, nothing's changed, no, and I just
01:43think it's going to get worse, I think this is just the start personally, but we'll see.
01:48They've got to put more back into the system really, that's what they've got to do, less
01:53profits and more back in.
01:55The bottled water station in Challock is set to close at 10pm this evening, and you should
02:00check your local supply station on South East Water's website for more information in your
02:03area.
02:04South East Water have said we're very sorry to customers in the Charing, Challock and
02:08Malash areas of Kent, who have experienced water supply issues throughout the weekend
02:12and today.
02:12Due to the prolonged period of hot and dry weather, water levels in our local drinking water storage
02:17tanks are very low, and this has impacted our ability to pump fresh drinking water to
02:21customers in this area.
02:22While some homes, like Geraldine's, have started to get supplies back, locals say they're living
02:27in fear about when their pipes will next pack up.
