00:00David and Brighton, you're next.
00:01Hello, David.
00:02Hey, buddy.
00:03So called for Champ and Chump?
00:04Yep.
00:05Okay, Champ McGonagall, first all-star, he's phenomenal.
00:11McGonagall, Champ.
00:12Chump goes to FIFA.
00:16He should never have a red card.
00:18You know, he got it.
00:19He should have been a yellow field.
00:21Here's a warning.
00:22Now you're kicked out for the game.
00:24We could have lost that game, him being kicked out of that game.
00:27I think that's big enough punishment.
00:30There should be.
00:31You know, wouldn't you agree?
00:32Well, it depends.
00:33David, are you a big soccer fan, or are you just tuning in for the World Cup?
00:36No, I love soccer.
00:38Okay.
00:39Because I was going to say, as somebody who only tunes in for the World Cup,
00:43I feel like my opinion is completely invalid on all this,
00:47because why should I have any say in something that's going on with their rules?
00:51And do I think it's over punitive?
00:53100% I do.
00:54But it's their sport.
00:55It's not mine.
00:56So if they've been playing by these rules forever,
00:58and this has always been the case,
01:00that, you know, you would get a red card for something like this,
01:03whether it's accidental or not,
01:05if you step on somebody like that,
01:06that you're going to get red carded.
01:07I don't know.
01:08I feel like I can't even talk about it.
01:11I think we here do our best.
01:13And we here, I mean, you and I do our best to understand
01:18and to convey what we think are legitimate opinions
01:24and thoughts on sports that we can back up.
01:26We have a little caveat of something we every once in a while we throw out there.
01:29We call it a hunch.
01:31And we, by definition, a hunch is something that you really don't need to defend.
01:34Almost every other position that you and I take on the air,
01:38I think we try to be able to defend it against an argument of why that position is valid.
01:42When it comes to the sport of soccer,
01:46let's be clear.
01:47This sport and this World Cup event,
01:50we are culturally unaware.
01:55And soccer at many levels, certainly the World Cup level,
01:58we are figuratively and quite literally,
02:00it is foreign to us.
02:04And not all of us,
02:05I think there are probably some Americans out there
02:08that are well-versed in this sport
02:10and can argue that red card, okay,
02:13up against the thousands of other red cards that they have seen
02:17and judged throughout the years.
02:19Or plays that weren't called with a red card.
02:22Yep.
02:22Like everybody was pointing out a Lionel Messi play
02:25that could have been a red card that wasn't.
02:27And yet most of us are giving our opinions
02:30based on minimal experience
02:33and almost no cultural awareness.
02:36Like I think the idea that the red card is overly punitive
02:39is our first thought.
02:42And yet, you know, we,
02:45this is not our thing, right?
02:48That's why I'm trying to take myself out of the equation.
02:50Yep.
02:51And so we've kind of stopped parachuting in
02:54and giving super strong opinions.
02:55On the world stage,
02:57our opinion should have almost zero currency.
03:00On the world stage relative to others.
03:06Yet there's so much of this story
03:09of why it shouldn't be.
03:12Which starts to me with mismanagement
03:16and some terrible reporting.
03:19And we'll get to it with Champ and Chump.
03:22We'll have our nominations coming up today at 1035.
03:25248-539-9797.
03:28Chris in Livonia says,
03:29Champ, Tiger, All-Stars, well-deserved.
03:31Chump, DTE.
03:33You know, I would hope he doesn't mean the workers out there.
03:36I would hope not.
03:37Yeah, because they're out there busting their ass.
03:39And I mean, obviously they had,
03:41they were anticipating there was going to be a problem
03:44with the storms that came through.
03:46And that's just, it's just tough to deal with.
03:48But if you've been without power for three days,
03:51I get it.
03:52Yep.
03:53Chump, the realtor that bought the house next door to me
03:55whose trees keep falling on my house and yard
03:57and won't pay for the repairs.
03:58Champ, my wife, for preventing me from hurting the realtor.
04:02Wow.
04:02Well, no violence.
04:04Let's not do that.
04:04Champ, Kevin McGonigal,
04:05for being named for the All-Star.
04:07Kid's incredible.
04:08Chump, it's got to be Belgium fans
04:09crying about the suspension reversal.
04:12Well, again.
04:13Were American fans crying about the suspension?
04:16And, I mean, unless this person has deep soccer knowledge
04:21and goes way back, you sure?
04:23Like, I'm going to guess Belgium fans probably know more about
04:26and have more precedent in history than we do.
04:28I mean, the fact that this has only happened one other time
04:32in the history of the World Cup,
04:34and it was 64 or 66 years ago, whenever it was.
04:39There have been some reversals, but they aren't reported as much.
04:43Well, I thought that was the red card reversal.
04:46I thought it had been 60-something years in the World Cup.
04:48where guys have been red carded in qualifying,
04:51and it was supposed to carry over to the World Cup,
04:52and they reversed it then.
04:54So it's a nuance, but it's happened.
04:55But this is an actual tournament.
04:57This has happened, but it's supposed to carry over
05:00into the World Cup when you get a red card
05:02in the final game of qualifying.
05:04Red card, sorry.
05:05In the final game of qualifying,
05:07but they've reversed those, too.
05:10Champ Riley Green for, among other things,
05:11making an amazing diving crowd.
05:13Chump Neymar for attempting to taunt the Norwegian goalie
05:15after getting a garbage-time PK while getting eliminated.
05:18Champ the three-Tiger All-Stars.
05:20Chump the Detroit Free Press for not recognizing Riley Green.
05:23The Detroit Free Press for not recognizing Riley Green.
05:25What's that about?
05:26I don't know what I meant.
05:27Do you know what that is?
05:28I don't know.
05:30248-539-9797.
05:31We'll get to our new Champ and Champ nominations today at 1035.
05:34Here on Carson Anderson, 97.1.
