00:02At an event that's much about theatre, the PM beamed as he greeted the friendly crowd.
00:08Well, mostly friendly.
00:09A woman carrying a Palestinian flag walked out in protest.
00:13The debates that we have in here are about the real change we deliver out there.
00:20The big debate today, gambling reform.
00:23Although there was no disagreement about the need for governments to do more to combat the harm wrought by poker
00:28machines.
00:29The question is whether we will summon the courage to confront powerful interests when working people are paying the price.
00:38This is a tax on working people.
00:41The proposed policy included a moratorium on the issuing of more rights for pubs and clubs to have poker machines,
00:47more tax for clubs with gaming machine profits exceeding $20 million a year
00:51and significantly reducing the number of machines in the state.
00:55And the truth is that in 2023, on this particular issue, the Labor Party did not have a good enough
01:03offer to the people of New South Wales.
01:06The Gaming Minister says Labor has already strengthened harm minimisation but foreshadowed more changes.
01:12These are significant reforms but they are not the end of the journey.
01:16And with a vote.
01:17Aye.
01:19I hear no no's.
01:23I declare the motion carried.
01:25It became party policy.
01:29While the government is not obliged to adopt the policy, the motion does put pressure on it to take a
01:34stronger approach to poker machine reform.
01:36We are hopeful that this does mark a moment in time when the Labor Party in New South Wales takes
01:42gambling reform seriously.
01:44For too long, it's been kicked into the long grass.
01:47The government is still yet to respond to the recommendations of an independent report into gaming reform delivered in late
01:522024.
01:53As it considers its response, the party has made it clear what it wants.
01:57It doesn't mean to take more than Joel Kermit hoop.
