00:00You know, very rarely do I go to a golfer on making a great sports take,
00:04but Jordan Spieth actually has a pretty damn good take here
00:08in what's happening to the landscape of sports.
00:12Sports betting is starting to infiltrate how fans act at sporting events.
00:19Three-time major champion Jordan Spieth says,
00:22betting on golf will have to be tackled here soon.
00:26I don't know of another sport that you could impact as a fan like you can golf.
00:33Well, to expand on what he's saying,
00:35he's obviously talking about what happened with Wyndham Clark at the United States Open
00:40when all those fans were up there in Montauk and they were going after him
00:44when he was there on the tee box and obviously they wanted Scotty Scheffler to win
00:49and they were booing him, they were heckling him.
00:51I would say this, welcome to the world of sports here, Jordan,
00:54but he's right, sports betting is now really changing on the way that you act at these sporting events.
01:01You know why?
01:02Because now you're more vested.
01:04You've got people making all these prop bets for all of these athletes,
01:08whether it's NBA, whether it's NFL, Major League Baseball.
01:12You are more invested now when you show up
01:14and fan behavior has definitely acted in a different way
01:18when it comes to seeing how the crowds act
01:21when a player doesn't do something that they got a lot of money on.
01:25And Jordan's got actually a pretty good take
01:26because you're starting to see that more.
01:29More unruly fans at the majority of sporting events.
01:33This has become an issue on many places
01:37because now you have a lot of money that is being bet.
01:41And by the way, many of these companies now, like the National Football League,
01:45that are in bed with places like DraftKings
01:47or in places like FanDuel,
01:50and you see all these sports betting apps,
01:52fans are now more vested, not just in waving banners,
01:56but also now with their economic dollars.
02:00Hey, going to a sporting event any longer is not a cheap proposition.
02:05If you want to go to a national football game
02:07and you want to just get a normal seat,
02:09you're talking about a $350 item for you just to go to a football game.
02:15And then if you've got money, bet on that respected sport,
02:18say even the World Cup game,
02:20you're more vested in how you're going to behave
02:24when you're at these sporting events.
02:26So to give Jordan Spieth some love here, he's right.
02:29What will these leagues eventually do?
02:31You're not going to create more of an unruly,
02:34you're going to create more of an unruly fan base
02:36the more and more gambling becomes more and more prominent.
02:40Look, the National Football League is notorious for this.
02:43And I've said this before,
02:45and we'll talk a little bit later on about this,
02:47but make no mistake, you've got a guy like Bob Kraft
02:51who's in bed with a sports gaming app,
02:54and you've got people like Adam Schefter
02:56that are also in bed with the same sport that they're covering.
03:02Folks, make no mistake, you're going to get unruly fans
03:06when you go to these sporting events.
03:09We saw this out, like I said, at the United States Open,
03:12and Wyndham Clark was hearing all the jeers.
03:15People had money on Scotty Scheffler,
03:18on him winning a U.S. Open championship,
03:20and hopefully winning a Grand Slam event.
03:22The more and more you get with this,
03:25the more and more money that's being invested
03:27when it comes to sporting events,
03:30fans are going to start acting different
03:32when they show up to these events.
03:34You've got $1,000 bet, and you've got a kicker missing.
03:38That's why this Brandon Soresby story
03:40in the NFL is a little bit nervous
03:43about a guy like a Brandon Soresby
03:45being involved in their game
03:46and the reputation of that league.
03:49Fans are really now betting a lot of money.
03:53You're even seeing this, again,
03:55when it comes to World Cup.
03:56So when you get a guy like Spieth coming out here
03:59and making these comments
04:00and how you're seeing the fans acting
04:04at these respected golf outings,
04:06he's right.
04:07And it cannot be ignored.
04:09The PGA, again, you want prop bets.
04:13You want a great environment.
04:16And to me, you also maybe have to embrace it
04:19if you're the PGA.
04:20Hey, look, you want to look like a traditional sport?
04:24Fans are coming to your sport
04:26and they're gambling on these athletes.
04:28They're gambling on these golfers.
04:30They do this overseas
04:31and they've been doing this on the European tour forever.
04:34And really, it's made that sport
04:37one of the more entertaining sports,
04:39the European golf tour.
04:40Now you're starting to see a little bit of that
04:42here on the PGA.
04:43Hey, when you've got this kind of money being wagered today
04:47and the amount of money that is being bet
04:49with all of these sports apps,
04:51there is no question about it
04:53that every single sport is benefiting from gambling.
04:58What you're going to get, though,
04:59is you're going to get unruly fans
05:01because they're vested in these sporting events now.
05:05You're not only vested in buying tickets,
05:08you're vested in making your prop bets.
05:10Whether or not you think that Jordan Spieth
05:13is going to go two under par on the first nine,
05:16what's he going to do on the back nine?
05:18Betting has now infiltrated all of sports
05:21and you've now made the fans more engaged in that
05:26and you've made them really more part of it
05:28and now they're vested in that.
05:30Anytime you put money on the table
05:32and you've got money bet on a respected sport,
05:37hey, reap what you sow here now.
05:40Gambling is part of it.
