00:02that's why this is the nfl they don't call these games because of weather you play no matter what
00:10how about the weather huh it's the ultimate icebreaker
00:16the greatest form of small talk like the area weather yeah this is wind picked up a little bit
00:22indeed weather is a hot topic in the nfl it's football weather out here baby football weather
00:27football weather there baby great football weather football weather football weather baby
00:35but what is football weather you know it's football weather you can see your breath
00:44it seems the only way to tackle weather in relation to football is to get extreme
00:54hypothermia will generally set in when your body temperature gets
00:57below 95 degrees does everybody read
01:03of the nfl these are the top 10 bad weather games of all time
01:11the number 10 bad weather game of all time red right 88
01:16one time one time baby one time
01:20in 1980 the browns were known as the cardiac kids
01:29another cardiac finish oh boy oh boy
01:33cleveland wrote a series of dramatic finishes into our number 10 bad weather game a playoff matchup with the raiders
01:48cold
01:49typical january in northeast ohio cold front had just pushed through the day before the game
01:54the weather it is brutal beyond belief the wind chill factor is minus 36
02:01this was actually the coldest game in nearly 15 years in the nfl that particular game wind was the thing
02:09that i remember my neck was exposed and that whole game i felt like somebody just had this
02:13ice-cold knife that just had it right in the back of my neck the ground was completely frozen
02:20we shut the heat down when we walked out so when you came in it was still cold so you
02:24didn't warm up
02:27and make sure with those heated benches over there if you see anybody asleep kick them in the ass
02:32so as we're in the game we're trying to decide what type of shoes to wear what should i put
02:38on my hands
02:39everybody kind of played the game like you're on ice
02:42finally we get ahead and they were known the cardiac kids and here they come again and all we could
02:51do is stand there
02:52and the raiders are in very very difficult position
03:00they needed a field goal to beat us we had already blocked one field goal
03:04it was so cold cockroft couldn't kick uh it was like kicking a boulder
03:08and so rutigliano called infamous red right 88
03:11they came out on the play
03:19we're all expecting a run
03:21sites is going back to pass wants to take a shot into the end zone
03:24he looks he throws
03:25and that's a great play that may have been intercepted
03:29mike davis could not catch a cold in alaska barefoot it
03:32steps in front of the ball and he catches it
03:36i beat mike off the line cleanly and was open
03:40the ball got held up in the wind
03:42you take a team that had won probably seven or eight games that way
03:46and we lose one that way
03:48total silence went across that whole stadium at that point
03:51it was a very very eerie feeling
03:56of course you had an eerie feeling
03:57you play near lake erie
04:02all they had to do was kick
04:04and history would have been different for the oakland raiders
04:08the browns have been cursed ever since
04:12but the raiders rode red right 88 to a victory
04:15three weeks later in super bowl 15
04:20silver and black football
04:21is king of the hill in the national football league
04:27plenty of wet weather games didn't make our list
04:30rain continues to fall
04:32i don't see any rain
04:33heavy now they're so
04:35i should change socks that might help
04:37in the 1977 playoffs the vikings and rams waded through the mud bowl
04:42the weather is getting severe the conditions are worsening
04:47mother nature couldn't stop the packers on their super bowl run 20 years later
04:52world champion
04:54nor the colts in super bowl 41
04:57and the rain is a little bit heavier
05:00but none of these downpours drenched the field quite like our next bad weather game
05:05the number nine bad weather game of all time
05:08the 1979 bucks chiefs monsoon
05:15the set up in florida was this stationary front was sitting right over the state
05:21and just
05:22on Tampa record brain fell in that city during that game
05:27it was one of those days where you wake up on a sunday and you look out
05:31and it's like an old testament kind of setting where
05:34the clouds are gathering and it's like a day for a hanging or something
05:38and you get to the stadium and it's not only raining
05:41it is just you're engulfed in water
05:45i've never seen so much rain in my life
05:48it didn't sell out people weren't gonna sit in that kind of mud
05:53the stairs almost made it like a fountain
05:56the mayor emergency called for them to open a floodgate
06:02and that allowed us to play the game
06:07a clear exit to their season would take more than a phone call from the mayor
06:11for the nine and six bucks fresh off three game losing streak
06:17now they're looking at if they don't win their last game they're not
06:22one of the great collapses in nfl history
06:24in desperate need of a win the stage was soaked
06:28more than set hosting the kansas city chiefs
06:31nobody could score kansas city could do little
06:34they gained 80 yards in the game
06:35but the bucks could not do anything either
06:40on their most promising offensive play of the game
06:43jerry ecwood rookie running back broke loose
06:45wilson was on his way to what looked like a 70 yard touchdown run
06:49the ball just kind of squirted loose like a greased pig
06:56Kansas City recovered but somehow some way we put together a drive
07:01we put the ball in position for neil donahue to kick a field goal
07:0619 yard field goal attempt
07:09awaiting the snaps wilson
07:10it is a low snap the kick is up
07:14that's it the buccaneers are the nfc central division champions
07:18there have been probably no more celebration in nfl history over a 19 yard field goal than this one
07:24i'll tell you what it was pandemonium in that stadium
07:26i saw guys wallowing in the water
07:28kissing the ground
07:29the players are really whooping it up on the sidelines
07:32this is quite a sight to see
07:34it was the greatest day in town bay history
07:43the number eight bad weather game of all time
07:46the sneakers game
07:49good evening everybody and welcome to the greatest show in sport
07:53before the nfl championship game evolved into the super bowl
07:57what a great stage this is
07:58this is the biggest stage in the world
07:59this is the main event in all the sporting world
08:02it was a small time affair and the outcome
08:05by something as trivial as who had the best footwear
08:09the sneakers game was interesting because the bears
08:12i think
08:13i don't know if this was in the 40s or something
08:20yep the 1934 nfl championship
08:25had won 18 straight games and they were the dominant team of the nfl at that time
08:31open your big brown eyes
08:32the lord of the world's greatest assortment of powerful perilous pigskin prodigies
08:37the chicago bears
08:39our number eight bad weather game is the 1934 nfl championship
08:43better known as the sneakers game
08:46you had a great chicago bear team
08:48and a great new york giant team
08:50with the legendary players on both sides
08:52here's where
08:55we're going into that game
08:56looking for a perfect season
08:57not for the last time
09:00the giants would be
09:04an undefeated team
09:05in a championship game
09:13they had played a great championship game the previous year
09:16and now this was the rematch in new york
09:24a frozen field
09:25in december
09:27not only frozen but it was corroded
09:29the cleats would not hold at all
09:32i'm telling you
09:32i just i just slid all over the place
09:35nobody could get any footing
09:36though the giants
09:38had the home field advantage
09:40the bears took an early lead
09:41the ice was thick
09:43but we got
09:43we got the jump on them
09:45the first half
09:46the score at the end of the first half
09:48was 13-3
09:50in the second half
09:51the giants decided they would need
09:53an equipment change
09:54to get them back in the game
09:55we couldn't find a sporting goods store in new york
09:58that was open
09:58they went to manhattan college
10:00and borrowed
10:01sneakers
10:02we had
10:03an assistant
10:04clubhouse man named abe cohen
10:06who also worked for manhattan college
10:08according to abe cohen
10:10he went back there
10:11and had to use a hammer
10:12to break into the locker
10:13abe cohen comes back
10:14with nine pair of sneakers
10:16in the end
10:17the soft shoes sneakers
10:18were the ones
10:18that could grab the field
10:19and made a tremendous difference
10:21on the ability
10:22to advance the ball
10:23right away we sensed
10:25something was wrong
10:25because they had good footing
10:26and we didn't have good footing
10:28and we were slipping
10:30sliding around
10:31and they were running
10:33all over us
10:35the giants went on to win
10:37our number eight bad weather game
10:3830-13
10:41they just outsmarted us
10:42i guess
10:43that's about the size of it
10:45it was legal
10:46there was nothing wrong with it
10:48the number seven bad weather game of all time
10:51the snow plow game
10:53the snow
10:54the snow
10:54the snow
10:56they
10:57used the snow plow to kick a
10:59they got a convict
11:00used the snow plow and
11:02to kick a path
11:04to make a path
11:05and
11:05so the guy could kick
11:09the snow plow game
11:10you know
11:11that brings back
11:12a lot of bad memories
11:14this was one of those
11:16classic nor'easters
11:17we all hear about
11:18a nor'easter
11:19generally develops
11:20somewhere
11:21either in the southeast
11:22or the mid-atlantic
11:23the wind direction
11:24is always out of the northeast
11:25it impacts the northeast
11:27and its movement
11:28is to the northeast
11:29and it winds itself up
11:30almost like a hurricane
11:32but when it happens
11:33in the winter
11:33it's all snow
11:35the patriots hosted the
11:37dolphins in our number seven
11:38bad weather game
11:40neither team could score
11:42in the wintry weather
11:43until the fourth quarter
11:44when the snow plow
11:46drove into NFL history
11:48they got down and
11:49positioned
11:50to kick a field goal
11:51and Ron Meyer
11:52now realized
11:53that they had no chance
11:54of kicking the field goal
11:56unless
11:56plowed out
11:57where the
11:58the holder could catch the ball
12:00and put it down
12:00in an area where
12:01there wasn't any snow
12:08grogan
12:09grogan
12:09our quarterback
12:09steve grogan
12:10comes running up to me
12:11and said coach coach
12:12why don't you go down
12:13and get that snow brush
12:14run it out there
12:15the snow plow
12:16and cut a
12:17cut a swath
12:18for the kicker
12:19to kick the ball
12:21clear it out
12:22a great idea
12:23so i run down
12:24to about the ten yard line
12:25and i grab this
12:26mark henderson
12:27who incidentally
12:28is on work release
12:29from walpole prison
12:30all of a sudden
12:31down the sideline
12:32comes Ron Meyer
12:33waving and
12:35motioning
12:35to get out there
12:36i kinda knew
12:37what he was talking about
12:38so i jumped right
12:39on the track
12:40and took off
12:42he starts right down
12:44the fifteen yard line
12:46swings out
12:47to the twenty two
12:48cuts a
12:49perfect arc
12:49for our left footed kicker
12:51john smith
12:53we kick the thing through
12:54three points
12:55here it is
12:56good snap
12:56step down
12:57the kick is up
12:58he has
12:59completed it
13:00it's good
13:01well john smith
13:02gets the first
13:03points on the scoreboard
13:04a thirty two yard
13:05field goal
13:06a little help
13:07from the brush
13:08for a man to come
13:09out over the field
13:10and see the spot
13:11with a place kicker
13:12i've never seen
13:14anything like that
13:16and i'm saying
13:17on the broadcast
13:18they can't do this
13:19you know
13:20this is not
13:22i don't know
13:22if this is in the rules
13:23you're allowed to do this
13:24now there's nothing wrong
13:25and there's nothing illegal
13:27about the thing
13:27it was just a spontaneous
13:30situation to try to win
13:31a football game
13:32really an unfair act
13:34when you come to think
13:35about it
13:35the only thing i could
13:36probably perceive them
13:37getting all upset about
13:38is unfair competitive
13:40advantage
13:40that kind of thing
13:41should not occur as a result
13:42of somebody putting a
13:44snowplow run by a convict
13:46with the day off from
13:47prison
13:47i later petitioned the commissioner
13:50that it was the most unfair act
13:51that's ever been perpetrated
13:53in the history of the national
13:54football league
13:55and i wanted to score a change
13:57and he said coach
13:57he said i agree
13:58but i've never changed the score
14:00of a game and i'm not going to
14:01start now
14:02three to nothing
14:03and i really didn't think
14:05there was anything
14:06i didn't think it was going to be
14:08a controversy at all
14:09i should have gone out and thrown myself
14:11in front of the snowplow
14:14hey
14:16the good news is
14:17the dolphins got their revenge
14:19and beat the patriots in the playoffs
14:23actually it wasn't a snowplow
14:25it was a John Deere 314 tractor
14:30it was a four foot brush
14:33it's unusual for a brush to do the job of clearing snow
14:36but i flipped it on and the rest is history
14:40my name was up on the diamond vision board
14:43and the whole stadium was yelling my name
14:45Henderson, Henderson, Henderson
14:47they said
14:49that guy's
14:50he's a hero now
14:51that convict on work release
14:55the number six bad weather game of all time
14:58the 1948 NFL championship
15:04in a blinding snowstorm
15:05the Philadelphia Eagles
15:06meet the Chicago Cards
15:07for the world's professional football title
15:09it was not particularly memorable
15:12or remarkable
15:13except for the fact that
15:14it was played under
15:15kind of ridiculous conditions
15:17when we said a snowstorm
15:18we really mean it
15:19when the Eagles took the field that day
15:21there was no field to take
15:23there was nothing but snow
15:24two 3-0 games
15:26and one 7-0 game
15:30it was almost impossible to play that game that day
15:32but they did
15:34how in the world can you say
15:35that was a championship
15:37fans were cheated that day
15:40they told people
15:41if you show up
15:42with a shovel
15:43a snow shovel
15:44and help us clear the field
15:46you can stay for the game
15:47get in free to the championship game
15:49if you bring a shovel
15:50and help us clear the field
15:54I mean this wasn't just a snowstorm
15:56this was a true blizzard
15:58there was so much snow piled up on the tarp
16:00that the grounds crew
16:02the stadium workers
16:04couldn't move it
16:05so they had to go get the two teams
16:07out of the locker room
16:08to come out
16:09and the players and the grounds crew
16:11remove the tarp
16:13off comes a huge tarpaulin
16:15even the players lend a hand
16:16now can you can you picture this today
16:19I mean can you picture that last year's Super Bowl
16:21going in and telling the Colts and the Bears
16:24hey could you guys come out
16:25and help us squeegee off the field
16:26get the water off here
16:27so we can play the game
16:28but I mean that was pro football in the 40s
16:30and the players didn't think anything of it
16:32so you've got kind of a makeshift field made
16:35the officials are sort of estimating
16:38where yard lines are
16:39whether a first down has actually been achieved
16:43and then there's no scoring for three periods
16:45until about five minutes into the fourth quarter
16:48when Steve Van Buren scores a touchdown
16:50after a turnover
16:50and that's it, it's a 7-0 game
16:52and the Philadelphia Eagles become the 1948 world champions
16:55by a score of 7-0
16:57what makes that game really interesting is the story is
17:01Charlie Trippi says the game was a sham
17:05Charlie Trippi is from Pennsylvania
17:08he should have been used to the conditions
17:10he should have scored the game when he touched down
17:13if he's as good as he says he is
17:21Steve Van Buren
17:23Steve Van Buren was living out in suburban Philadelphia
17:28the coach Greasy Neal
17:30knowing that Steve was a little different
17:33he called him and he said
17:35Steve you're coming to the game right?
17:38and Steve said
17:38ah Greasy they're never going to play this game
17:40he said Steve it's a championship game
17:42I think you really ought to try and get there
17:44so Van Buren goes and couldn't get his car out of his driveway
17:49Van Buren goes up and takes a bus to 69th Street in Philadelphia
17:53they're transfers to the Market Street L
17:56takes the Market Street L to City Hall
17:58and transfers to the Broad Street Subway
18:00takes the Broad Street Subway up to Lehigh Avenue
18:02then gets off of Lehigh Avenue and walks six blocks through the snow
18:06to the stadium
18:08after the game's over
18:10after Van Buren gets carried off the field by the fans
18:12he goes in, changes his clothes
18:14walks six blocks to the subway
18:16down to City Hall
18:18Market Street L
18:19and the bus home
18:21that was pro football in 1948
18:23many championships have been determined by bad weather conditions
18:26in 1962 the Packers blew through the Giants to win the NFL title
18:31might have been the most brutal game because of the weather
18:34and the physical nature of the two teams
18:36Ray Nitschke leaps and tips the pass
18:39it's a gift for Dan Curry
18:41who returns 30 yards
18:42the win took the Giants game plan
18:45just blew it away literally
18:47Curry barrels into King
18:49Nitschke recovers the fumble
18:51six weeks after the snowplow game
18:53Don Shula's Dolphins had no qualms
18:56using the weather to their advantage
18:57in the 1982 AFC Championship
19:00it rained for three or four days before the game
19:02and they had irrigation pumps to pump the water out of the
19:06and they didn't turn them on
19:07at the line of scrimmage
19:09it's going to be run in for a touchdown
19:10us being sprinters
19:12when we got out there it just really slowed us down
19:14but the 82 Dolphins aren't the only team
19:17who rode bad weather to a Super Bowl
19:20the number five bad weather game of all time
19:23the 1975 AFC Championship
19:27covering number five on our list starts with covering the field
19:31the weather had been bitter the whole week in Pittsburgh
19:34it had snowed and they had actually put a big tarp over the field and tented it
19:40the night before it split or something
19:42and because it split and all this moisture from the heaters underneath it had run to the side
19:49and when it split there was still moisture in the field
19:51and it became an ice skating rink
19:55there was a suggestion that maybe the Raider or the Steelers had iced the field
20:01John Madden came in and he said to me
20:03hey, what happened to the field?
20:06I told him I said the wind crashed
20:07you did it all purpose
20:09they told me you had a water hose on it
20:11no I didn't
20:12we stood there all night long
20:13trying to get rid of that ice
20:15I did the same for both teams
20:17he said no it ain't
20:19Franco goes up the middle
20:21our guys go around the end
20:23and there's all ice around the end
20:25I said well go up the middle then
20:29Dirk Denardo the groundskeeper there
20:31I don't know if he's told the truth on that
20:33but they made sure that field was icy
20:35that's not an urban legend
20:37that happened
20:38Al Davis made it a point before the game
20:41when he was walking around
20:42to show the referees that you know
20:44how much could they make happen
20:47if
20:48the games in Pittsburgh in January
20:52there's not much you need to do as a human
20:54to make that happen
20:56you just chalk that up to mother nature
20:59and
21:01you know
21:02carry on
21:04this was an unfair competitive advantage for the Steelers
21:08our game was the throw in the deep ball
21:10so with that ice
21:12we had to move those receivers in
21:14and that narrowed the field for us
21:16I'll never forget Pete Rosell said
21:18I don't understand what you're talking about
21:20it's not the same for both sides
21:23yeah
21:24it's hard to keep your foot in this stuff
21:26the sidelines were ice
21:28just sure
21:29hard rock ice
21:31it's cold
21:32it was about 10 degrees
21:35the wind was about 30 miles an hour
21:36the place was packed
21:37it was a championship football game
21:40against two great teams
21:44the games look more like the ice capades than football
21:47as each team struggled to do anything on the frozen field
21:52it was hard for the offenses to get their game together that day
21:55and you know both the Steeler defense and the Oakland defense were kind of dominating the play
22:02it was unbelievably intense
22:04very physical
22:06no holds barred
22:08Lynn Swan's story captures that intensity
22:11came across the middle for a pass
22:13I caught the pass
22:15Atkinson just a tackle
22:17collared me around the head
22:18which was legal at that time
22:20and slammed my head into an icy field
22:22it was just a good solid strong strong hit
22:26on him coming across the middle
22:27and then I was out
22:28fumbled the football
22:29and the football is flopping around the field
22:32and the Raiders go out
22:33and they recover the ball
22:36I don't think I was as totally prepared
22:39for the headhunting
22:41that was going to take place
22:43come on
22:44he is a cry baby from jump
22:46not only that
22:46the guy
22:47he was a good football player
22:49but he was soft
22:50I didn't think it would get to that degree
22:52or to that level
22:53of attack
22:54but it did
22:55come on
22:56Lynn Swan
22:57soft
23:00even in the brutal cold
23:01there was no softening of the rock hard Steelers defense
23:05back in those days we were taught that
23:07their weather is irrelevant
23:08it doesn't matter if it's a huge ice storm or not
23:12you got to go out there and play your best game
23:13beautiful conditions
23:15wonderful
23:15it was cold
23:16it was nasty
23:17it was wet
23:18we were rolling our sleeves up
23:19I don't think what the Raiders met was a frozen field so much as a steel curtain
23:24that was really the story
23:26this was the emerging Steelers dynasty team
23:31cold intensifies pain
23:33and we were going to really administer some serious pain that second hand
23:38and they did
23:39but a defensive struggle turned into an offensive attack late in the game
23:43and ultimately into victory for the Steelers
23:46breaks a tackle
23:47he's going to cut it down the sideline
23:49he's ready to go for a Pittsburgh touchdown
23:52I've always believed and said that
23:54that you can't worry about things that you can't control
23:57it was icy
23:59they were very slippery
24:00when you're talking about cheating
24:02that's the ultimate of cheating
24:03definitely
24:04the field was a mess
24:06we were trying to do everything to keep the whole field in good shape
24:11we even had the Zamboni come beside them
24:13that turf
24:15that turf
24:15they had to get that turf out of somebody's garage or something
24:20that was the worst turf ever
24:21I don't even want to hear it
24:23that's
24:23that's
24:25excuses excuses
24:28the number 4 bad weather game of all time
24:31the 1981 AFC Championship
24:35that's the cold
24:36freezer bowl
24:38oldest day in NFL history
24:43the temperature in greater Cincinnati has dropped to 9 below
24:47with winds out of the northwest gusting at 35 miles per hour
24:50we're talking a wind-chilled 59 degrees below zero
24:54and the Bengals are playing the San Diego Chargers for the AFC Championship today out by the river
24:59and frankly folks, you've got to be crazy
25:02nuts to be out there today
25:07it was one of those days that hits you in the face and you said, oh my God, how are
25:12we going to play?
25:13it was the biggest game we had ever played in
25:17it was the first for Cincinnati to be in the championship game
25:20the winner goes to the Super Bowl
25:22we had a very tough head coach in Forrest Gregg
25:25that I think had us mentally prepared
25:27he says men it's going to be a lot like going to the dentist
25:30you know what's going to hurt but you got to go anyway
25:34meteorologically, what happened during this weekend was phenomenal
25:38a low pressure, a storm set up over Hudson Bay in Canada
25:42and it was the equivalent of a category 2 hurricane
25:45this thing was a monster
25:47what ended up happening was huge winds and cold air funneled right out of Canada
25:51frostbite sets in in less than 5 minutes in conditions like that
25:57I remember vividly the first play where I had to throw a forearm
26:01and I thought I shattered my arm
26:03just looked brittle
26:05getting my helmet on and off was a challenge because it was frozen
26:08it had no pliability anymore so it was
26:11hurt a little bit on the ears getting it on and off
26:14it wasn't just his helmet that Dan Fouts had trouble with in our number 4 bad weather game
26:21he couldn't throw a spiral
26:23because it was cold
26:28Incomplete for Winslow
26:29and the wind appeared to take that one and fly it right out of bounds
26:34Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson on the other hand was on fire in the frigid weather
26:42Kenny for his body type had unusually big hands
26:45and those big hands in those conditions with a hard rock solid frozen football
26:52he controlled the football better than Dan Fouts did
26:55I did have trouble throwing a spiral that day because of the cold and the wind
27:01and I was amazed at how easily Kenny Anderson threw the ball into the wind and through tight spirals
27:07and basically I thought that was the difference in the game is how well he played and how poorly I
27:11played
27:14on the bench no one was exempt from the bitter cold
27:19that was the first time we had the heated benches
27:22and we're on the sidelines so I'm sitting there and they've got the little slots to put your feet in
27:27and it looked like there was a turnover so I stood up
27:30my feet didn't come out and I fell
27:32and luckily I had my helmet on because the first thing that hit was my face mask
27:35and all of a sudden I'm a little bit groggy on the sideline
27:38it could have been the first quarterback to knock himself out sitting on the bench
27:42I'm sure that San Diego fans wherever they might be
27:46wishing that this game could have been played on a warm day
27:50and I
27:50what warm day is Cincinnati in January there is no warm day to be found
27:58post what postpone the game until March
28:03it's a ridiculous comment
28:07I think it really hurt them that they had to play
28:10in 59 below zero
28:13windshield five
28:16it was so cold nobody's used to those conditions
28:20you always think what would this Charger team be like if the conditions were even a little fair
28:26the thing is though
28:28we beat San Diego in San Diego during the season that year like 48 to 17 we smoked them
28:33so I just feel like we were a better team if we played them in Antarctica or Hawaii
28:37it still comes down to who plays the better game on that particular day and they did
28:44game of all time
28:45the Farm Bowl
28:47it is a wonderful day for a football game in Chicago
28:51two days ago we were talking about weather in the single digits
28:53now it's Shardsleeve weather, it's New Year's Eve, is it wonderful or what?
28:57yeah!
28:59welcome to Chicago where the weather can change at any minute
29:03Chicago's weather forecast, mostly sunny today, high of 35
29:06it's warming up nicely out there, 29 along the lake
29:09all right here we go
29:13the Eagles have never beaten the Bears in Chicago
29:18back to Tomczak, rushes on, Tomczak has time, he rainbows the right side, McKinnon line up and I have the
29:23field
29:23to the third, to the 25 play, 15, 10, 5, and it's down to Banner, 64 yards
29:30wait a minute, I just realized, there's the ice bowl, the Tuckoo game, and the epic in Miami
29:38and one of those teams has to be off the list
29:42the start of the game, the first quarter was sunny
29:45and then there was hardly any win, and you could see the fog came right off the lake
29:53now this is bizarre, that seems almost too trite a word
29:57it was like out of one of those scary movies
30:01it's eerie
30:05how does that work for warm, warm air goes over the cold water and whatever, however that stuff is
30:12weather wise, this was a true anomaly, this hardly ever happens in Chicago at this time of year
30:18colder air comes in off of Lake Michigan, it's a little bit warmer in the city
30:23suddenly you get this inversion layer that develops and you've got
30:26I was sitting up in the press box broadcasting that game
30:29with some players room here and then you see the people over there
30:32no broadcast, when you can't see anything
30:35there's the snap now to Cunningham on first and ten
30:37with Huntley on the left side and it's intercepted I believe
30:41intercepted and returned down field
30:43I can't see, I cannot see
30:47there was no visual
30:49of the
30:50but I can't see nor can anyone else
30:53there are just shadows back there
30:55and he'll throw
30:58not sure whether it was caught or not
31:04the fog bow was the coolest game I would ever play in in my life
31:09it was just absolutely
31:11the blanket of fog that smothered Soldier Field
31:13the world inspired some in our number 3 bad weather game
31:16you can't find the football
31:18you can't see the quarterback
31:19you can't do anything
31:20how do you get your signals in and out
31:22how do you do a lot of things
31:23it's like playing blind
31:26as Randall would drop back and tone step drop
31:28at that point
31:30a guy like Buddy Ryan
31:31cause he never cared enough about his offense
31:36to send in signals
31:38he just gave him a playbook with like
31:41maybe one page and said
31:43you're on your own Randall
31:50and it's all timing
31:51and you know in the NFL
31:53most plays are about timing anyway
31:55one thing that we weren't
31:57much concerned about was the long ball
31:59so the best place for Randall to throw the football
32:02was the middle of the field
32:03because you couldn't see sideline to sideline
32:05it made for some great collisions
32:11what made it great is you could come to the sideline
32:13and the minute you came to the sideline
32:15you stepped through this wall
32:17to the coaches
32:18and you kind of snuck your head out
32:20and they said well what's going on
32:22it was definitely
32:24what you would call a players game
32:26because we really enjoyed playing the game
32:29inside the bubble
32:29the Bears were at home under their grey canopy
32:33while the visitors from Philadelphia
32:35got lost in the fog
32:37we at Philadelphia
32:39were screaming at the top of our lungs
32:41stop the game
32:43and there's even talk now
32:44of suspending the game
32:45because the officials can't see the ball
32:47we have been in contact with the National Football League
32:50and they have never called a game because of fog
32:53but they are monitoring the situation in this ball game
32:58the league let the game go on
32:59and Chicago ended up on top
33:0120 to 12
33:03you play a whole season
33:05for that game
33:06and the Eagles had a good chance to win that game
33:09they were on a run
33:10and they lost because a cloud descended
33:12on Soldier Field
33:14and blocked the view of a lot of players
33:20in Philadelphia it's another example of our bad luck
33:26games have come down to a kick
33:29it's a first down kick
33:30and it's blocked
33:32and no one yet
33:33Leon Lett
33:35Leon Lett
33:37in 1993 Leon Lett's blunder cost the Cowboys a victory on Thanksgiving Day
33:42when you think in terms of history
33:44Hitler's army, Napoleon were defeated because of the cold and the snow
33:48in 1958 the Giants advanced to what some call the greatest game ever played
33:55after Pat Summerall
33:57yes, that Pat Summerall kicked a 49 yard game winner in the Giants season finale
34:04it's cold, it's dark, it's wet
34:05Summerall kicks, it's gone
34:08the season's longest field goal
34:10but our next field goal kick started a dynasty
34:14the number 2 bad weather game of all time
34:17the 2001 questionable time
34:202
34:21when we go back in time
34:23and you look at all the dynasties
34:26the San Francisco 49ers had the catch
34:29caught by Clark
34:30Clark on a touchdown
34:32and the Pittsburgh Steelers
34:34had the immaculate reception
34:36and they're good ladies
34:38has gotten its final in the air
34:40and the New England Patriots
34:44more than anything else
34:45had the tuck rule play
34:48in the 2001 playoffs
34:50the Patriots welcomed the Raiders to Foxboro
34:52in typical New England fashion
34:54and the snow is coming down in Foxboro
34:57it was a lot of snow
34:58and it started about 3 or 4 hours before the game
35:01you love football to be played in the cold weather
35:03in the elements, this is your night
35:05it snowed 4 inches during the game
35:08so we're talking this much snow
35:09it was like a snow globe
35:11giant flakes falling down all night long
35:16the Raiders led 13-10 late in the 4th quarter
35:19but New England had one final possession
35:22in our number 2 bad weather game
35:24the weather was secondary in that game
35:26because of how it played itself out
35:29because it all came down to the top
35:31looks at showing blitz
35:33here he is coming down
35:34and Brady calls the football
35:35speaker dives on the ball
35:38the Raiders have the ball
35:40and I ran off the field and I was so pissed
35:42I couldn't believe that
35:43you know, I fumbled the ball
35:45to lose the game
35:46the Raiders are 1-43 away
35:49from going back to the AFC Championship game
35:52and the next thing you know
35:54a little flag comes out
35:56or the referee starts doing this
35:58the play is going to be reviewed though, Greg
36:00why?
36:00he does bring it forward
36:01but that's not to pass the ball
36:03he pumped it
36:04he was pulling the ball back
36:06it looked, of course we're biased
36:08that it was a forward pass attempt
36:10it looked like his arm was going forward
36:12and the tuck rule comes in man
36:14it pays dividends for our team
36:17after reviewing the play
36:18the quarterback's arm is going forward
36:21it is an in
36:22oh right!
36:23Patriots retain the ball
36:25yes, I know the tuck rule was in the books
36:28but that was a fumble
36:30he was not looking to throw the ball
36:31he was pumping
36:32this is an abomination of a rule
36:34and if I were the Raiders
36:35I would put on that rule
36:37the tuck rule, come on, what a joke
36:40I know the rule book says that they called it right
36:43but common sense tells you
36:44the Raiders got screwed on that play
36:46that's a rule that hasn't been used before
36:48nor since
36:50only with the Raiders
36:52it actually has been used before
36:54and it was used against the Patriots
36:57but it's still a stupid rule
37:02didn't mean we won the game
37:04but it just gave us life again
37:05Adam Vinatieri will attempt a 45 yard field goal
37:09to try to tie it
37:10there must have been 5 or 6 inches of snow on the field
37:13and the wind was blowing at Adam at that point
37:15no way
37:16how are they going to make it from 45 yards
37:19off of a bed of snow
37:23snap, ball down, kick up on the way
37:26when it left my foot
37:27I was 50-50 if it was going to have enough distance
37:29I didn't know
37:30but it kept going and going and going
37:32and I'm praying and I'm praying
37:34and it's good
37:36it is good
37:3745 yards
37:39Adam Vinatieri
37:41kicks it through the snow
37:42how many times would I make it if he gave me 100 shots
37:45I don't know, 10 maybe
37:47it's the second head grab
37:48in about 10 minutes
37:50you're like
37:52our number 2 bad weather game ended in overtime
37:55with Adam Vinatieri
37:56launching a dynasty with another field goal
37:59and all the big linemen with the size 14 shoes
38:02were helping me try to clear a patch of snow
38:05so I could get the best footing as I could
38:06look at the Patriots are trying to clear it off a spot
38:09where's Mark Henderson?
38:10did you ever get that guy out of jail?
38:13the crowd will tell you whether he makes it or not
38:15snap, ball down
38:17kick is up
38:20Patriots win!
38:21the Patriots win!
38:23when you work hard
38:25and you feel like you've done everything that's necessary to win
38:28and then you lose by an official's call
38:31and that's heartbreaking
38:32it sticks with you forever
38:33the Raiders season ends
38:35in controversy in New England
38:37after having an overturn
38:39of a ruling that will be talked about for years
38:43when people think about
38:45bad weather
38:46and pro football
38:48the first thing that comes to your mind is the ice ball
38:50and that's probably the way it should be
38:53the number 1 bad weather game of all time
38:56the ice bowl
38:58you can't find a better game than that
39:02I remember
39:03the morning of that game getting a wake-up call
39:06and I picked it up
39:07good morning Mr. Sable
39:09the sun is out
39:11the wind is out of the north
39:12it's 16 degrees below zero
39:15have a nice day
39:16Green Bay weather
39:18this might be the coldest one
39:20oh yeah it's definitely a record today
39:22certainly
39:22it was the coldest New Year's Eve
39:26in the history of Green Bay Wisconsin
39:28when we got to the stadium
39:29there was some talk about postponing the game
39:32and we
39:36kind of milled around the locker room for a half an hour
39:40and so we didn't know if we were going to play or not
39:42finally Coach Lombardi came in and said
39:44the game's on, we're on, forget about it
39:47get dressed and let's go
39:48Vince Lombardi didn't even want his players to wear gloves in the game
39:51and it was 16 below zero
39:54hell yes I'm going to wear gloves
39:56it's 15 below out there
39:58it was ridiculous, you know, you've got to maintain that toughness
40:01you're not going to fool anybody by not wearing gloves and trying to be a tough guy
40:05you're going to look like a fool
40:07Vince said, I don't want anybody to miss a ball
40:10because of the gloves
40:11everybody's complaining, everybody's going out moaning and groaning
40:14and I went up to the equipment man
40:15I said, Dominic
40:16I said, give me a pair of brown gloves
40:18he'll never know the difference
40:22looks were of little concern that day
40:24it was hard enough to exist in that weather
40:28the first play of the game
40:30the referee blew the whistle
40:32he tried to pull the whistle, which is a metal whistle
40:34out of his mouth
40:37it stuck to his lip
40:38and he had to rip it out of his mouth
40:41and his lip bled
40:43and the blood froze
40:44there was never another whistle in the ice ball
40:47we played the entire ice ball
40:50listening to the commands of the referees saying stop
40:54and everyone did
40:55how do you like that?
40:57that's cold
41:05they had put this wiring
41:07they had 750,000 volts of wiring
41:09under the turf
41:10they felt that this would keep the field from freezing
41:14but it was so cold
41:15that it froze the wiring system
41:18the field we played on was
41:20totally a nice frame
41:22the footing was so bad
41:23the hands were so cold
41:25and the receivers catching the ball was difficult
41:28throwing the ball and running the ball
41:30everything was difficult
41:32it was ridiculous, it just couldn't get any colder than it was
41:40the feeling of the air
41:42it was like being in a meat locker
41:44you know, you can only get so cold
41:46and you can't get any colder
41:49you couldn't see many faces
41:50all you could see is the steam coming out of the mouths of the people
41:53it was just like vapor, vapor coming out
41:59there were all kinds of problems with that cold
42:03the Arctic conditions were difficult to adjust to
42:07some would say impossible as frostbite and several cases of hypothermia set in
42:14fittingly, the Packers adapted best to their home field
42:18and their final drive leaves the legacy of our number one bad weather game
42:25when I think of my team, the Green Bay Packers
42:29I think of that drive
42:31we're on the 32 yard line, 68 yards to go, 4.5 minutes
42:34we knew that this was probably going to be the last time we'd have the ball
42:39and that we had to score
42:44that final drive
42:45in the scope of football history
42:47Chuck Bernstein was unwanted by the Giants
42:52he put together 30 or 40 yards from scrims in the last drive
42:58he becomes the definition of the Lombardi Packers
43:03their season is on the line
43:05their championship is on the line
43:06and in a very real sense their legacy is on the line
43:10I don't know if anyone knows
43:14what it is you find when you reach down inside for something
43:17and you have to make it happen
43:19I don't know that we've defined that yet
43:21the definition just might be found in our number one bad weather game
43:26on the most frozen tundra
43:28that Lambeau Field ever had
43:31Packers trying for the go-ahead score
43:33Starr begins the count
43:35takes the snap
43:36he's got the quarterbacks take it
43:38he's into the touchdown
43:39the Packers are going to be
43:40NFL champions for the third straight year
43:44I ever had to tell anybody
43:46what the Green Bay Packers of my era were all about
43:49I'd say go back and watch that 8-9 play drive
43:52in the Ice Bowl
43:53you
