Rashida Jones, Olivia Wilde and Edward Norton attend the UK Special Screening of their new film ‘The Invite’ in London where they discussed a range of topics.

Former ‘Parks and Rec’ star Rashida Jones co-wrote the film and revealed how much of her own relationship she poured into the script. Olivia Wilde, after reacting to England’s win at the FIFA World Cup, reflected on her past trips to the UK and talked about directing and starring in the film, while Edward Norton drew the obvious thread between his two Seth Rogen collaborations. 00:00And I hope everybody else passes. If they don't, you better call me.
00:02I feel like so happy.
00:05What are your parents doing?
00:06Irresponsible.
00:07You know, they seem cool.
00:08And she's so...
00:10She's so pretty.
00:13Have you got tequila?
00:30How's your day going so far?
00:31It's going great. How's yours?
00:33Wonderful, thank you.
00:34Harry Kane just called to her. The world is happy again.
00:36Oh, yes.
00:37Nice to have a runner.
00:38Anyway, we're here to talk about the invite and you.
00:39Welcome to London. Welcome to the UK.
00:41I imagine you've been here many times before.
00:43Can you share with me your favourite UK memory?
00:45Does that have to be London-based?
00:46I love the UK.
00:48I love Wimbledon.
00:49Oh, yeah?
00:49Huge fan of tennis.
00:51I'm a huge fan of Wimbledon specifically.
00:53I love strawberries.
00:54I love Pimms Cups.
00:56I like it all. I'm an Anglophile.
00:58You're welcome back any time.
00:59Thank you so much.
01:00Hey, congratulations on the massive vote that the invite is having so far.
01:03And whilst people are praising, you know, how it looks and the cast and the performances,
01:08the script is above all else in many people's eyes.
01:11How has it been to, like, have it received in this way?
01:13Have you got it really?
01:14It's nuts. It's nuts.
01:15I'm going to be honest.
01:17It's completely surreal.
01:19It's been just an incredible journey.
01:21And, you know, I get to...
01:23Will McCormick is my best friend and we get to write together.
01:25And all we do is make each other laugh and tell dirty jokes.
01:29And it's a real miracle that we get to share that with the world and that they actually
01:35are down for it, you know?
01:37And it's great.
01:38I've seen past interviews where they're talking about how, you know, they received the script
01:42and then got together and added kind of their own experiences and, like, relationship dynamics
01:46into it as well.
01:47Also, you and Will are best friends.
01:48But, like, were you putting some of your own experiences into the script as well?
01:51You and Will, your own, like, ways and not?
01:53Yeah.
01:53Yeah.
01:53I mean, we all sat down together with the actors and we just...
01:56It was like an information sharing session.
01:59People were...
02:00Everybody was so forthcoming with their past experiences, which is why it feels so naturalistic
02:06and it feels so much like them.
02:07And it was so fun because everybody was so honest about their past.
02:12And it really gave us an opportunity to shape those parts for these incredible actors.
02:18And also, they've all read so many scripts, written, you know, produced.
02:22Like, what a wealth of talent for us to work with.
02:25But, yeah, there's definitely some personal stuff in there for me, for sure.
02:30It was such an intimate, like, film over to you itself.
02:32But also, like, that experience sounds like a very intimate moment between you and actors, too.
02:36And I've seen them all talk about how they learned really unique and interesting things about each other.
02:40We did.
02:40Is there anything that you can share?
02:41Absolutely not.
02:42No.
02:43That is...
02:43That's cone of silence.
02:45That is for us to know in that room.
02:47And that's it.
02:47That's it.
02:48That was a test and you passed it.
02:49That's right.
02:49And I hope everybody else passes.
02:50If they don't, you better call me.
02:52What conversation do you want audiences to have as they leave the cinema?
02:56Well, I hope they laugh.
02:58And then I hope after they laugh, they kind of shiver a little bit and think,
03:02God, maybe there's a conversation I can have with my partner that I haven't.
03:06And if they're single, maybe they, you know, think they're lucky stars they're single.
03:11Or they think to themselves about a past relationship, something that, you know,
03:16they could have done differently or it makes them miss somebody or want something new out of a new partner.
03:22I don't know.
03:22I just hope it, like, it sparks a bit of a personal reflection in terms of how you position yourself
03:29in relationships.
03:30Yeah.
03:30And my final question is a personal one.
03:34That being, look, you, love Anne and Lesley Noakes and how all of that dynamic.
03:38Do you get fans coming up to you and giving you Lesley Noakes-style compliments?
03:42Like a beautiful seahorse and that kind of stuff?
03:44I do.
03:44I get a lot of people just scream at me on the street, Anne Perkins, all the time.
03:49I, you know, I get, like, beautiful, exotic starfish, you, you know, all of them.
03:56But, yeah, it's, I mean, it's crazy to have played a character that has that first and last name recognition
04:02all over the world.
04:03Because when we did that show, it wasn't, it wasn't a hit.
04:07It was not a hit.
04:07Nobody watched it.
04:08Well, some people watched it, but it was not, like, out of the gate.
04:11We were always struggling to stay on the air.
04:13So the fact that it's, like, sort of this thing now that people are, is beloved and teens watch it
04:18and they binge watch it.
04:19It's amazing.
04:20Yeah.
04:20Well, I saw that Aziz is here as well tonight.
04:22Yes, yes.
04:23And it's a whole part of the right catchment.
04:24I love that.
04:24Yes, yes.
04:25Thank you so much for your time.
04:26Thank you so much.
04:53Thank you so much for your time.
04:55Welcome to the UK.
04:56I imagine you've been here many times before.
04:58Can you share with me your favorite memory of not just London, but the UK?
05:00What's your favorite memory of being here?
05:02Oh, my God.
05:02I mean, the English countryside is unmatched in its beauty.
05:07I love it.
05:08I love it.
05:09I love, um, I mean, I love Henley.
05:13I love, I remember I went to this town.
05:15It's actually the town where they shot Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
05:20I was, like, typical American tourist.
05:23Just, like, oh, my God.
05:24I'm so happy because it looks like our fairy tales.
05:28Um, no, I, I, I love exploring this country.
05:32I love the Lake District.
05:34Um, I love Brighton.
05:36Uh, and, and I just really love London.
05:39I feel like all those things listed you just passed your British history.
05:42Did I?
05:42You can come back anytime.
05:43Okay, good.
05:45Uh, congratulations on the film.
05:46Congratulations on, like, the immense reaction that it's getting as well.
05:48Um, is it, like, a big sigh of relief, relief now it's out there and the action is bloody
05:53good?
05:54Yeah, it's such a relief.
05:55God, it's so scary.
05:57Especially with a film that feels really personal.
06:00You know, it would have really hurt if they were, like, this is sh**.
06:06Because it was, it was all of us kind of, like, shedding our DNA into the pot.
06:11And, um, I'm so pleased to hear about people laughing with strangers.
06:16I, I think that's medicine for everyone these days.
06:20Nothing feels better.
06:22It's why we love going to see live music.
06:23It's why we love sports.
06:25There's something chemical that happens to us when we enjoy things with other people
06:31and feel things with other people.
06:32And for a long time, comedies, at least the last, like, I don't know, ten years, comedies
06:37have been slowly relegated to streaming.
06:40And, and I don't know why.
06:43Because they belong in theatres so that we can laugh together.
06:47I love hearing about, um, kind of the intense session that the cast had and, um, with Rashida
06:51and Will as well to kind of, like, implement your own experience of relationships and stuff.
06:55What did you learn about those people in that room that you can share with us if anything?
06:58I learned that Seth Rogen has the happiest marriage that's ever been.
07:03I truly think Seth and Lauren are goals, goals upon goals.
07:07Because every time we would improvise a new way to do the fight and try different ways
07:12of doing different fights, he was like, oh my God.
07:15He's like, people would never argue like this.
07:18And we're all like, oh, people argue like this.
07:20And he's like, oh my God.
07:22And I was like, you charmed, sweet souls.
07:24Um, I learned that.
07:26And I just learned that everyone in this group was so thoughtful about relationships, about
07:32themselves.
07:33It's all a bunch of people who have spent their lives as storytellers and observers.
07:37And everybody came with all of these offerings, you know.
07:42So much of this plot was created by the cast.
07:46And that is something that is thrilling to be a part of.
07:49That's so wonderful.
07:50Thank you so much for your time.
07:52And congratulations again.
07:52Thank you so much.
07:53And if you are, I'm nice to meet you.
07:56You have made my favorite.
07:57So nice to meet you.
07:58Thank you so much.
07:58Sure.
07:59An absolute dream to meet you.
08:01Because I watched Spon Club when I was nine.
08:03Nine?
08:04Oh, what were your parents doing?
08:05That's why I'm a right freak, you know?
08:06Yeah.
08:08Irresponsible.
08:09Congratulations on the massive reaction of invites getting so far.
08:12How do you feel when, like, obviously you've made up for a good few films over the years.
08:15It's a great one and we know it.
08:16How does that feel when it goes out into the world and gets it?
08:21Whatever type of film catches in the moment it's in, it's, I mean, I love it.
08:29Something like this where you're hoping people laugh when they laugh, that's great.
08:33You know, you mentioned Fight Club.
08:35And it's funny, like, Fight Club didn't get a great response in the beginning.
08:40But we knew what it was, I think.
08:43I don't think we needed.
08:44And we could feel it.
08:45We could feel it in the subculture, not in the critics.
08:49But we could feel it.
08:51Sometimes you sort of, for me, this was a joy to make.
08:57A joy to make.
08:58It was really, really creatively daring.
09:01And the way Olivia ran the film and directed the film was unlike anything I've experienced.
09:06And so that alone, you get to the end of it.
09:08And I remember Seth turned to me and goes, I have no idea what's going to come of that.
09:12But that was a great experience.
09:14You know what I mean?
09:15And I felt the same.
09:16And then lo and behold, she put together this marvelous film.
09:20Like, editorially, sonically, visually.
09:22It's just like she just killed it.
09:25And it's quite an achievement to give that performance and direct this film.
09:29It's a big flex by Olivia.
09:32I think she just absolutely crushed it.
09:35Actually, you've obviously worked with many great directors over the years.
09:37First time working with Olivia as a director.
09:39What components did she have, do you think, that made it such a brilliant experience for you as the actors?
09:43Well, she did things that no director I've worked with has ever done.
09:47When she shot the film in order, which is hard to explain how impactful that is, she invited us all
09:56to write dimensions of our characters and hold them privately and surprise them.
10:00You know, bring the big story that I tell about myself.
10:05I wrote it in private, and she never asked me to hear it.
10:09When you see her reacting to it in the film, that's her hearing it for the first time.
10:12And I remember thinking, like, who does that?
10:14Like, nobody does that.
10:16But nobody takes that kind of a risk.
10:19But she was seeking an authenticity of the interactions and was willing to make a bet that we could surprise
10:30ourselves along the way, which is really creatively daring.
10:37And I admired it enormously.
10:39You mentioned that, obviously, as you were leaving set, you were on set, continuing to have conversations.
10:42I know you worked together 10 years ago on Sausage Party.
10:45Very different.
10:47Is it a long-standing friendship?
10:48Both of them have certain sexual events.
10:52Yeah, there are elements that actually are quite connected.
10:54I'm looking forward to the online articles that compare those two masterpieces.
10:58But was that at the start of a friendship?
11:01Is that how perhaps you two had a revolt?
11:03No, we go back for it.
11:03My wife produced Superbad and 40-year-old Virgin.
11:06And it was Seth's longtime producer.
11:10She and Judd Apatow.
11:11And so I know Seth from the really old days.
11:15Yeah.
11:15You've always been in the corner then.
11:16Like, he really has, like, think of Seth as Superbad to Seth today in this film as well.
11:21Oh, but Seth's a machine.
11:21Seth's one of the hardest working people I know.
11:24And he's, for all of his kind of image, Seth is a meticulous writer and craftsman.
11:31And he, you never see Seth without a piece of paper and a pencil in his hand, refining and refining
11:37and refining.
11:37It's not as off-the-cuff as he makes it seem.
11:40He's a relentless, relentless craftsman and really one of the best work ethics of anybody I know.
11:48He's just phenomenal.
11:50And final, from you, what conversations do you want people leaving the cinema to have in between themselves after they've
11:55seen him in nights?
11:55I don't know what they'll have.
11:57It'll depend on where they are in their lives, and that's what's great.
12:00I think anything that's a conversation piece, I think any four people go to this together is going to be
12:06very, very interesting dynamics.
12:09I recommend it as a, I recommend going as a foursome.
12:12Drinks after guys.
12:14Yeah, exactly.
12:14Drinks after guys.
12:15Yeah.
12:15Thank you so much for your time.
12:16Pleasure.
12:17We did come down here tonight to invite you.
12:20Invite us.
12:21To join us.
12:24Us.
12:25Me too.
12:29Sorry, we don't have people over very often.
