00:30These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
00:36Hi everyone, I'm Simone del Rosario, in for Craig Negrelli.
00:39We're beginning this morning with an abrupt end to the U.S. House of Representatives' latest session.
00:44House Speaker Mike Johnson canceled the chamber's remaining votes on Tuesday, sending lawmakers home early for a holiday weekend recess.
00:52The breakdown comes from a fracture within the Republican Party.
00:55A group of Republicans blocked leadership from bringing more bills to the floor.
01:00They say they're frustrated over leadership's delays and tactics in delivering the party's priorities, like President Trump's voter ID bill,
01:08the Save America Act.
01:10Missouri Republican Eric Burleson told The Washington Times he doesn't see the fight in leadership.
01:15Florida Republican Anna Paulina Luna says Speaker Johnson's plan to merge the Save Act with a must-pass defense authorization
01:23bill is one the Senate will immediately shut down.
01:26President Trump has been putting pressure on Congress to pass the Save Act, even going so far as refusing to
01:32sign a bipartisan, affordable housing bill, which Johnson says is purposeful.
01:38But he's trying to make a point, and I think he's making it very effectively, and the fact that you
01:42all ask me every three steps down the hallway illustrates that he has achieved the desired objective, and that is
01:48to make Save America the number one thing, because if we don't get that right, everybody's concerned about what happens
01:54next.
01:54As we've reported here on the show, if President Trump doesn't sign the housing bill, it'll still become law after
02:0010 days, since it's already passed in both chambers.
02:04A 29-year-old Democratic Socialist just ended a Denver congressional era that's been going on as long as she's
02:10been alive.
02:11Malat Kieros defeated Congresswoman Diana DeGette in Colorado's 1st District Democratic primary.
02:17DeGette has held up to the seat for nearly 30 years.
02:20Kieros is now heavily favored to win in November in the deep blue Denver district.
02:25Her victory adds to a left-wing streak inside the Democratic Party.
02:29Kieros is the third progressive challenger to defeat a sitting House member in eight days after two wins in New
02:35York.
02:36If we organize and show no fear in standing up for what's right, that is the message that Denver has
02:44sent to both parties, to Donald Trump, and to the entire country.
02:51But Colorado's primary night also showed that progressive momentum had its limits.
02:56Democratic Senator John Hickenlooper beat the more progressive state Senator Julie Gonzalez.
03:01In the Democratic race for governor, Attorney General Phil Weiser defeated Senator Michael Bennett while campaigning on his record suing
03:07the Trump administration.
03:08And in the battleground 8th District, Democratic State Rep. Manny Routenel, a progressive, won the nomination to face Republican Rep.
03:16Gabe Evans in November.
03:18The results show the party's left flank gaining ground, but not sweeping the map.
03:23The fight over birthright citizenship isn't over, if President Trump has anything to say about it.
03:29He's pushing Congress to create a law ending birthright citizenship.
03:33After the Supreme Court rejected the executive order he signed the first day of his second term.
03:38In a 6-to-3 opinion, the justices decided that children born to people who are in the United States,
03:43either unlawfully or temporarily, are American citizens.
03:48Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, says,
04:03In a social media post, Trump called the decision too bad and said,
04:17Now, it's been more than 30 years since an amendment was added to the Constitution.
04:21It takes a supermajority to ratify an amendment, something the Republican Party does not have.
04:27But if they were to tackle the issue through law, that would likely face challenges right back in the courts.
04:34New financial disclosures from the president show a stunning score with his crypto ventures, which make up most of his
04:40gains in 2025.
04:42The spreadsheets show income of well over a billion dollars from crypto alone,
04:47making up more than half of his reported revenue of about $2.2 billion.
04:51That total figure for 2025 is nearly four times what he made from all of his businesses the year before.
04:58A big bulk of that crypto change came from his company's crypto business, World Liberty Financial,
05:04a portion of which was sold to an investment firm tied to the United Arab Emirates.
05:08The other big chunk came from sales of the Trump meme coin.
05:12Forbes says the president is worth about $6 billion overall and has presided over the most lucrative presidency in American
05:20history.
05:21That is largely thanks to crypto.
05:24Once a critic, Trump ran for this term on championing the industry.
05:28The trade deal linking the U.S., Mexico and Canada is up for review this week,
05:33and its future is getting a lot less certain.
05:35The president hints he's not planning to extend the deal he made his first term.
05:40Well, I'm not looking to renew it.
05:42I don't, you know, I mean, I made the deal.
05:45And the primary reason I made the deal is that NAFTA was the worst trade deal I've ever seen.
05:49That wouldn't kill the deal now, though it would leave it in limbo.
05:53Not renewing would start a decade-long countdown,
05:56where if the three countries don't agree to changes, the pact expires on this day in 2036.
06:01However, the president does have termination in his pocket,
06:05which would trigger a withdrawal within six months.
06:08The stakes are huge.
06:10The United States, Canada, and Mexico account for nearly $2 trillion in trade together a year,
06:15about $5 billion a day.
06:17As for why the deal he negotiated isn't working, the biggest fight is over cars.
06:22The U.S. wants stricter rules for North American auto production,
06:26including a new requirement for 50% of U.S. content in North American-built vehicles.
06:32Oscar Ocampo, with the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness,
06:35called that a red line for both Canada and Mexico.
06:39Businesses say they want stability after months of shifting tariffs,
06:44while officials from all three countries are expected to meet virtually today.
06:49Mexico and Canada have previously sought to extend the deal,
06:52which doesn't appear to be on the table.
06:54Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney now says his priority is to work out new terms.
06:59Speaking of new terms, finally this morning,
07:02Taylor Swift might be getting married this weekend.
07:05Sources have told multiple news outlets wedding festivities for the pop icon
07:09and her fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs Tida and Travis Kelsey,
07:13will be held at New York City's Madison Square Garden.
07:16Security is tight around the arena,
07:18with the city reportedly shutting down streets around it ahead of the big day.
07:22The sources say the celebrity couple will have a rehearsal dinner Thursday evening
07:27and a wedding celebration,
07:28which sources have described as a cocktail party,
07:31Friday afternoon into early Saturday morning.
07:34Music legends Stevie Nicks and Tim McGraw are rumored to be performing at the wedding.
07:40Swift and Kelsey's relationship has been splashed all over the news and our screens
07:44since the couple started dating in 2023.
07:47They announced their engagement last August through a joint Instagram post.
