00:02Detectives are continuing to investigate exactly what led to this suspicious fire which tore
00:07through this house here on Sickle Avenue in Hope Island just before midnight. It's understood five
00:12people were inside at the time. Police say the fire started in a bedroom which is where the body
00:18of a 38 year old man was found. They have confirmed they are investigating whether this is a possible
00:24case of self-harm but those investigations are continuing. Police spoke to the media earlier
00:29today and here's what they had to say. Those people were known to police. Indeed last Wednesday
00:37police were called to that house in response to a disturbance. As a result of the investigation
00:43that took place there there was a disturbance between two of the gentlemen that lived at that
00:49house. It was alleged that some threats were made. Police took some action in the form of a
00:55police protection notice and a domestic violence protection order was issued by the court earlier
01:01this week in relation to those two gentlemen. A Queensland fire department spokesperson says
01:06it took five crews two hours to extinguish the blaze. As for the other occupants police say two
01:12people had to jump from the balcony to escape and I did speak to two neighbours who were first on
01:17scene
01:18and helped those other occupants flee from the flames. Heard an old lady screaming so we ran over she told
01:24us to help her dad get out the garage and we lifted up the garage and got him out. We
01:29just walked up and
01:30we're trying to like open it with our hands and then we got a good grip on it and just
01:35pulled it up and
01:36they were just laying there so they just like rolled out. As for those other four occupants we know that
01:41two
01:41men one in their 40s the other in his 80s were taken to a Brisbane hospital in a critical condition.
01:47A woman in her
01:4850s was taken to a Gold Coast hospital in a stable condition and we know that a man in his
01:5330s was
01:54also home at the time but he did not need medical treatment but police are appealing to the public
01:59for any information if they do have any to come forward.
