00:12Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're taking a look at 10 of the biggest
00:17differences we've noticed between the new Star Fox remake and the 1997 classic
00:22Star Fox 64.
00:35Before we begin we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to MojoPlays
00:40and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:44The Prologue.
00:54So by now you've probably seen the Prologue already.
00:58It was at the Star Fox Direct when the remake was first revealed, and the demo even opened
01:02up with this magnificent intro.
01:04But for those youngins who never experienced the original game or even the 3DS remake,
01:09it wasn't like this at all.
01:11Five years later, General Pepper noticed strange activity coming from Venom.
01:17James McCloud, Pygma Dengar, and Peppy Hare of the Star Fox team were sent to investigate.
01:23We never had a direct depiction on how things went down on Venom before the start of the
01:27Lylat Wars.
01:28What we had in the N64 game was a text crawl brilliantly narrated by Ja Green, who also
01:34voiced a number of different bosses.
01:36There is a part of me that will always prefer the text crawl, but the cutscene in the remake
01:41helps paint the tone and visual style that Nintendo and Velen Studios want to take the franchise
01:46in.
01:57The main menu.
01:58A neat aspect of Star Fox 64 was the calming, serene main menu.
02:04It was so simple and minimal in design, but in a way that it doesn't feel lifeless.
02:08The music especially makes the entire menu beautifully captivating, as if you're really just sitting
02:14in the calm, peace of space.
02:25The 2026 remake maintains its own level of simplicity and peace, with a basic layout and
02:31the Star Fox team's holoprojector showing icons of the different game modes.
02:35Just setting the main menu inside of The Great Fox winds up making the main menu feel oddly
02:40nostalgic, though not for Star Fox 64.
02:43Anybody else feeling like taking a trip to Dinosaur Planet suddenly?
02:55Training.
02:57Welcome to training mode.
03:02Let's practice debating.
03:05There are probably a decent amount of Star Fox 64 players who may never have bothered with
03:10the training mode.
03:11This was under a separate mode, completely outside of the main campaign, where players
03:16could learn the ins and outs of Star Fox 64's controls and mechanics.
03:20However, the main campaign did instruct players on how to perform most of the R-Wing's abilities,
03:25so the training mode seemed pointless even though it was basically its own level.
03:29The remake brings the training mode forward as a required tutorial.
03:39After the prologue, the Star Fox team takes part in their own training simulation with the
03:43same music as the N64 game, and once again, Yarudepon serves as the instructor.
03:50Good to have you back, man.
03:59The Dialogue.
04:07In case you haven't seen much of the game already, the Star Fox remake changes much of
04:11the dialogue seen in the N64 original.
04:14Some classic lines, such as Granga's last words to Andros and Star Wolf's introduction
04:19on Ficina, are still here.
04:30Unfortunately, the voice acting doesn't always deliver these lines in the same corny fashion
04:34we love.
04:35Heck, some lines are completely removed, some characters have different personalities, and
04:40other lines are added in for storytelling purposes, which is nice.
04:43Even with all of this in mind, I do love how Fox throws some shade when downing a Star Wolf
04:49member on Venom 2.
04:50It's honestly pretty funny.
04:52I don't believe it.
04:56Believe it.
04:58I've got the better team.
05:00Multiplayer.
05:01As many of us might recall, Star Fox 64 did feature a multiplayer mode, but it wasn't
05:07anything super remarkable.
05:08It was a four-player PvP mode where you and your friends engaged in dogfights around empty
05:14spaces based on Corneria and Sector Z.
05:17The 3DS remake did a much better job with elaborate maps, but this new remake?
05:22Well, we just have three maps, each being a different game mode, and the lean content
05:26tells me this was likely an afterthought during development, so I don't want to be too harsh
05:31on it.
05:40After all, let me tell you, after streaming myself playing the online mode last week, the
05:46online mode is actually a ton of fun.
05:48And still, it would have been nice if there were just a few more maps to keep things fresh,
05:53that way I'm not playing on Corneria over and over again.
05:55It's a great map, but we need some variety.
06:09The music.
06:18Honestly, the Star Fox remake has the absolute best renditions of the historic Star Fox 64
06:25soundtrack.
06:33Yes, we have heard many renditions of the theme song, the Meteo track, and a few others, but
06:39the score here is incredible, and you wouldn't guess who composed it.
06:44Steven Barton took charge of the new arrangements, and the man has quite a portfolio.
06:49In the realm of video games, Barton worked on a ton of music for games such as Call of Duty
06:544
06:55Modern Warfare, Titanfall and Titanfall 2, Multiverses, and the Star Wars Jedi games from EA and Respawn.
07:13Katina.
07:15Fox!
07:16You made it!
07:19Bill!
07:20Is that you?
07:21I can't believe it!
07:24Katina was one of the harder levels of Star Fox 64.
07:27Enemies were fairly aggressive, but the biggest pain in the neck was trying to shoot the enemies.
07:33Only the pilots of the Cornerian army emitted exhaust, but when facing forward, they blended
07:38in with the enemies.
07:40The remake manages to remedy this problem by making enemies stand out a little more from
07:44our allies, giving them a more prominently green color scheme in Light Trail.
08:01It may not seem like much, yet it really does go a long way and helps in getting through Katina
08:06quicker.
08:06We did it!
08:08All units, disengage!
08:11Enjoy the fireworks, everybody!
08:18The Challenge Mode.
08:21Fox!
08:22Get the ones behind me!
08:27Something's wrong with the team music!
08:31At first, Challenge Mode may not seem like anything new.
08:35After all, when Star Fox 64 was remade for the Nintendo 3DS, there was an extra game mode
08:40to jump in and out of different levels at our leisure.
08:43Thing is that, it was just a simple score attack mode, not much different from the main
08:47campaign.
08:48The Challenge Mode here, seen in this remake, actually gives you different tasks.
08:53Requesting backup!
08:55This guy won't leave me alone!
08:59It's not a competition, Fox!
09:02Some tasks you may have already done at some point during your normal campaign runs, but
09:07do them again under this mode, and you'll unlock even harder challenges to truly test
09:12your skill.
09:12And the best part is, you don't have to do them all in one go.
09:16You can focus on multiple, or even do them one at a time.
09:30The Cut Scenes
09:31We need your help, Star Fox.
09:34Hey there, General.
09:36You seem a little on edge.
09:38Andross's invasion has found its way to our doorstep.
09:41This is, of course, the most obvious change between the 1997 game and the 2026 remake.
09:47However, we want to note it because of how much it adds to the story.
09:51Star Fox manages to add a ton of context to why you're hopping from planet to planet across
09:56the Lylat System.
09:57Originally, Star Fox 64 had you doing that because, well, it's a video game and we need
10:02levels in a video game.
10:03We got levels in a simple plot, what else do you really need?
10:06But these cutscenes reveal how Andross has been affecting the Lylat System, and even hints
10:11at details about the Cornerian Army's own operations, as shady as they could probably
10:16be.
10:17Andross's army could be used in Meteo as a staging area for the invasion.
10:21But never mind that.
10:23You heard General Pepper.
10:24The fleet needs our support in Sector Y.
10:27This amount of care may even open the franchise up to future installments, focusing on a specific
10:31planet or two.
10:40And lastly, the endings.
10:55Now, the final fights against Andross aren't super different.
10:58His attacks have been reworked to make him a more devastating foe, but that's not the
11:03part of the endings we want to focus on.
11:05What's interesting is that if you do the easy route first, and end with Robo Andross,
11:10you don't get to see the end credits.
11:12You get the bad ending, and are told to look for the alternate routes in order to truly
11:18defeat Andross.
11:28What's even cooler is that after beating Andross, the end credits will show the Star Fox team
11:34traveling back to Corneria while passing by all of the planets you visited in your playthrough.
11:38Bill even shows up for your team's award ceremony.
11:42Hi, Bill!
11:43Is that Bill?
11:44Hi, Bill!
11:49What's the biggest change you noticed in Star Fox?
