Should Dan Quinn or Adam Peters be on the hot seat if the Commanders fail again this season?

00:00As you look at this commander's roster,
00:02you look at this commander's team,
00:04I think if you see the world through burgundy and gold-colored glasses,
00:08my man Jeff, Jeff probably sees a 12-win team out there.
00:11I think if you look at last year, they won five games.
00:18We're now two seasons into the Adam Peters-Dan Quinn experiment,
00:22and one year was fantastic.
00:2512-5, got all the breaks, made it to the NFC title game.
00:28They didn't get worked in the NFC title game, but they got there.
00:32Last year was a disaster, injuries, bad luck, terrible defense.
00:39So it's hard to know who this organization is.
00:45It was almost bipolar.
00:47They were almost like the inverse of each other.
00:49Yeah, 12-5 to 5-12, literally.
00:52Now I do know, so when the question is,
00:54who faces more heat this year, Dan Quinn or Adam Peters,
00:58one thing you got to understand about life in the NFL,
01:02on game day, generally, the GM, in most places,
01:08the GM is sitting with the owner.
01:10So as a game unfolds and things go wrong,
01:14the GM is able to say to the owner,
01:16damn, why is he doing that, right?
01:19Whereas the coach is down on the field.
01:22That's the man in the arena, right?
01:25So the bonds between a general manager and an owner
01:28tend to be higher than the bonds between the coach and the owner,
01:31or the coach and the coach and the general manager
01:33are kind of seen as one sometimes.
01:35Like, you just saw this in New York with Joe Shane.
01:38Joe Shane's been terrible.
01:39Awful.
01:40But because he watches the games with the Mara family,
01:44like, Joe Shane got an extension.
01:45They had to fire, they had to get rid of Day Bowl.
01:48They kept Joe Shane.
01:49He got an extension.
01:50Apparently, he and Harbaugh work well together.
01:52I've met Joe Shane a number of times.
01:54He's a charismatic dude.
01:56Like, I can understand why they wanted to work with him
02:01versus Day Bowl's a jerk.
02:03Like, I can see how that schism occurred
02:05and Shane comes out the better side, right?
02:09Now, here in Washington,
02:12AP and DQ seem pretty tied at the hip.
02:15But if they have another bad season,
02:17I think if you don't win at least seven games,
02:20Dan Quinn knows the reality of this business.
02:23Like, if you go 5-12 and then what would that be?
02:276-11?
02:27It's going to be really hard to outrun that storm
02:29for the head coach.
02:30But I think Peters is okay, kind of regardless.
02:34Yeah.
02:34Just because those bonds are different.
02:36But I do think specifically with this Iyuk situation,
02:42I think the commanders were interested in Brandon Iyuk.
02:46They were interested in not trading for him,
02:48but bringing him in once he got released
02:50to one-year incentive-laden deal.
02:53I think there was real interest there.
02:55That calculus has gotten more complicated,
02:58and that's going to fall on AP.
03:01I think there's a lot of pressure on both of them.
03:03For me, there's more pressure on Dan Quinn.
03:05Yeah, I think that...
03:07More immediate pressure.
03:08100%.
03:08I mean, there's a chance here that...
03:10And I think this goes back to a little bit
03:13of what we were talking about last segment
03:14with the wide receiver conversation.
03:16It kind of depends upon what your expectations
03:18for the year are.
03:19You know, if you're expecting,
03:20and you say that seven or eight wins is fine,
03:22then this receiving core is probably fine.
03:23But if you want to see this team get to the playoffs
03:26once again and just give yourself a chance
03:29to maybe go on another magical run
03:30with Jaden Daniels at the helm
03:32and try to get to at least 10 wins,
03:33then maybe it's not good enough.
03:34And I think that's kind of where Dan Quinn is,
03:36where I think that fans will probably be calling
03:40for DQ's job, even if they just win
03:43seven or eight games, JP.
03:45Like, if they don't make the playoffs,
03:46fans are probably calling for DQ's job,
03:48and I think rightfully so.
03:50And that's just kind of the territory it comes with.
03:53But I think that Adam Peters does deserve some heat here
03:56because you mentioned the IUC situation,
03:58and I think this is where he misplayed his hand
04:01a little bit.
04:02I think part of the reason that we're looking
04:04at the receiving core right now the way that it is
04:06and we're having these discussions
04:07is because they're just kind of banking on IUC.
04:10And you should have known that banking on IUC
04:13as a wild card is going to bring some extra stuff with it.
04:16And now you're seeing some of that extra stuff,
04:18and it makes it so that maybe you sign IUC and he's fine,
04:21and we all look back and go,
04:22yeah, it was a crazy saga,
04:23but he's a good football player.
04:24It also could blow up.
04:26And then it comes back to hurt you as the general manager
04:29that decided it was worth it to sign this guy
04:31when there were other options available.
04:34Stephon Diggs is someone we've talked about a lot
04:35this offseason in a similar type of vein
04:38where there's some off-field things.
04:40But on the field, he's a good football player still.
04:43You saw what he did last year in New England.
04:44But it's even other options.
04:46Like, they explored the Alec Pierce thing.
04:48I think that would have been a mistake
04:49to pay him that much money.
04:50But I go back to, we talked about this
04:52when he just got signed to Minnesota, Jawan Jennings.
04:54And I was not in on Jawan Jennings
04:56at the beginning of free agency
04:57because I thought he was going to get overpaid.
04:59And then to see the contract he got in Minnesota,
05:02you know, it seems like Washington should have been in.
05:04And then Keim reports that Washington
05:06was never really in on him.
05:08And, you know, if you get beat out,
05:09that's one thing.
05:10If Minnesota signed him and you just never got a chance.
05:13Just went to a number you're uncomfortable with, right?
05:14Yeah, like, that's one thing.
05:16For them not to be interested,
05:17it tells me that they're just,
05:19IUC was the plan.
05:20And I think going in with a plan
05:22on someone as wild as IUC is,
05:25it's a little bit, I mean, now you're seeing it.
05:27Like, you're putting yourself in a tough spot
05:29where now you almost have to make that move
05:31because you kind of planned on it.
05:32And he's put you in a bad spot
05:34where it's probably not the right move at this rate.
05:37Joe is in Manassas.
05:38Joe, whose seat is hotter, AP or DQ?
05:41What's up, guys?
05:42Love the show, as always.
05:43To be honest, I think, honestly,
05:46they came in together, right?
05:48They're going out together.
05:49There's a reason why,
05:50and JP, you made up a good point
05:52that, like, you know,
05:53the general manager watching the game
05:55with the owner, correct?
05:56Yep.
05:56So that being said,
05:57why wouldn't the owner be like,
05:58well, you hired this bum?
06:00Like, I would be sitting there being like,
06:01hey, man, well, you hired this guy.
06:03That's a direct reflection of you, isn't it?
06:05Doesn't it start at the top?
06:06So I personally think,
06:07I personally think that they're going to go out together.
06:10If they have a bum season this year,
06:12I think the ownership's going to be like,
06:15hey, man, you laid with this guy,
06:17so let's go.
06:18It's a good call, man.
06:20I appreciate you.
06:21We'll open the phones.
06:22800-636-1067.
06:24800-636-1067.
06:28The other, I think,
06:33interesting, perhaps complicating factor here,
06:37at the end of this season,
06:39will be the first time the commanders can negotiate
06:41an extension with Jaden Daniels.
06:44And I think there is a school of thought,
06:47a group of people,
06:48and I think to some degree fairly,
06:51that don't believe the organization has done enough
06:54for Jaden from a weapons perspective.
06:56Yeah.
06:57Right?
06:57I'd be one of those.
06:58And you start to wonder what Jaden thinks,
07:02if Jaden loves the way everything's been run.
07:05And not to suggest that a quarterback should run the operation,
07:10but when you see a court,
07:12let's say Jaden has another really good season.
07:15Like, that'd be two really good seasons out of three.
07:17And quarterbacks have influence.
07:20Quarterbacks should and do have influence.
07:24Like, dude, you know what just happened in Baltimore?
07:27Lamar said it's him or me with Harbaugh.
07:29Yeah.
07:29And Bashadi picked the quarterback.
07:31Maybe that thing can just kind of run its course over time.
07:33But, like, quarterbacks have influence.
07:37And that's going to be another factor in all of this.
07:39Because the money, everything's about to change.
07:42Yeah.
07:42And I also don't think that,
07:44while AP and DQ have been tied together at the hip,
07:47I don't think AP's going to pull the Mike Rizzo,
07:49Davey Martinez thing from last year.
07:51Remember, Mike Rizzo would not fire Davey,
07:53and so ownership said both of you are gone then.
07:56I don't think that Adam Peters is going to necessarily tie himself to any one coach,
08:00the same way most general managers in the NFL do not do that, right?
08:03Like, you might work well together,
08:04but if it's not working, we'll move on from the guy
08:06because it's just not working.
08:08And I think Adam Peters, to his credit,
08:11you get a lot of cash in the bank when you draft Jaden Daniels,
08:16and you're correct about that.
08:17You get a lot of cachet for that.
08:19Now, some of the stuff, like his draft classes in future years,
08:23outside of the first round, have been a little bit questionable.
08:26You go back to even the Jaden Daniels year,
08:29six picks inside the top 100,
08:30and Jaden was a home run hit,
08:32and the rest of them were mediocre to bad in some cases.
08:37So there are some good and bad.
08:39Laramie Tunsil trade, I think, is a net positive.
08:41The Marshawn Lattimore trade is a net negative, right?
08:43So there are little things going back and forth there,
08:46but I don't think that it's something that Adam Peters is,
08:50unless this IUK situation goes where they sign him
08:53and then it blows up,
08:54I don't think he's on the hot seat by any means.
08:57I think that DQ definitively is,
09:00because if they have a mediocre season,
09:01I think that he is probably going to be gone.
09:03But I do think it is something that you have to evaluate Adam Peters
09:07and understand that just because he drafted Jaden Daniels
09:10doesn't mean it makes up for every sin
09:12that he's committed while he's here.
09:13Right.
09:15A lot of folks want to weigh in on this.
09:16Mike is in Annapolis.
09:18Mike, what do you think?
09:19Hot seat.
09:20Hey, what's up, guys?
09:21How you doing, bud?
09:22So I'm doing all right.
09:24I want to go back.
09:25I think it was, I don't know, a couple days ago,
09:27a couple weeks ago,
09:29JP, you were talking about how the commanders cannot comment on IUK
09:33because he's under contract.
09:35Yeah.
09:35But let me ask you this.
09:36Can they go out there and field a question
09:39and then answer it along the lines of,
09:42we feel comfortable with what we have in the building moving forward?
09:46They've said that repeatedly.
09:48They've said that repeatedly.
09:50Yeah.
09:50Like, all of them have said that a hundred times.
09:53So do you read between the lines on that for an IUK thing?
09:56Does that kind of settle the camp a little bit?
09:58No, I don't think so.
10:01I think what they could do that they haven't,
10:03and this is not their style.
10:05Like, they are extremely closed off.
10:07They do not want to get involved in the media.
10:10They could easily, I mean, like, they have my number.
10:14You can text me.
10:15You can text Kime.
10:16You can text Nikki.
10:17They can text Schefter.
10:18They can text Rapp, Garofalo.
10:21They very easily.
10:21I'm getting my number.
10:22They can text me, too.
10:23They can text you, Mike.
10:23They very easily could put the word out that they're out of the IUK business.
10:28Yeah, 100%.
10:29I agree.
10:30Just, you know, if Mike Garofalo tweets out, just so we're clear,
10:35Washington is not, like, Brandon IUK continues to say he's going to the commanders.
10:43Per a league source, the commanders are not interested.
10:46Correct.
10:46That could happen, no problem, and it hasn't.
10:49Gotcha.
10:49So, appreciate the call, Mike.
10:51All right.
10:52All right, thanks.
10:53See you, buddy.
10:54Let's go to Kenny in Largo.
10:57Kenny, what do you think about the hot seat?
11:00What up, JP?
11:01How y'all doing, man?
11:02I'm good, bud.
11:03How are you?
11:04I'm good.
11:05So, me, my personal opinion, I believe Adam Peters should be on the happy mode at DQ.
11:12I mean, DQ, he a player's coach, man.
11:16Like, players want to run through a brick wall for him.
11:18And Adam Peters, he the one who made all them trades for Lattimore.
11:22Football, you know, and all these old players.
11:26That's why the reason we was slow and all that last year.
11:29I mean, we just was in the championship two years ago.
11:32So, I'm not putting, I'm not blaming DQ for our failure.
11:36I don't think he should be in the high season, even if we did have another, you know, bad season
11:41or okay season.
11:42I feel like our defeat should get looked at.
11:44You don't want to bring these people in?
11:46True.
11:48Fair.
11:49Thanks for the call, bud.
11:50I will say the one thing for DQ, and he talked about this at OTAs and minicamp, and, you know,
11:55I'll be interested to see how he follows through on it.
11:58The thing that I'm most interested for him, fans are going to be very frustrated if it's another light training
12:03camp.
12:03I don't think that it's going to be.
12:04He said it's going to be their most intense, most competitive one yet, but they cannot come out of the
12:09gate slow because he may feel that way right now, our last caller, but if they start 0-4, he
12:18ain't going to feel that same way then.
12:19So, that's the thing.
12:20If Dan Quinn goes out and they have the team ready to go and they come out playing well, then
12:25maybe you can feel that way, but they're going to have to change up the way that they've approached training
12:30camp.
12:30They're going to be ready to go out of the gate, or they're going to end up in a hole
12:32that maybe AP and DQ can't dig themselves out of.
12:35More competitive is great.
12:37They need to be more physical.
12:38Yes.
12:39Like, I saw at minicamp a greater, things were running faster.
12:45Like, I still can't confirm if this is a word or not, but there was greater rapidity.
12:50Like, there was more rapid action.
12:53And granted, you're also trying to install two new systems on both sides of the ball, so you need as
12:56many reps as you can get.
12:57And it's not just because the guys are faster.
12:59There was a sense of urgency.
13:01Camp needs to mirror that.
13:03I applaud DQ for recognizing the status quo was not working and making changes.
13:10Camp has to look different.
13:12And as somebody that's there every day, you get to see the flow of it.
13:17And I agree with the caller there.
13:20It's interesting to get a pro DQ call coming off 5-12.
13:27And let's be clear.
13:28I think you and I both would say, let's go 10-7 and not have to have this conversation.
13:33But it's an interesting time right now as you gear up for what is coming.
13:39Let's go to Ward in Ashburn.
13:40What's up, Ward?
13:42Hey, how's it going?
13:44Good, dude.
13:45I think that Adam Peters should be on the hot seat no matter what.
13:50Personally, just because it's been two years in a row.
13:53I mean, I give them some credit this year.
13:56Just because of free agency, it's been two years where Washington had almost the most cap space.
14:04And this year was the one year where they did mainly a lot with it, with the big signing from
14:10the dude in Seattle.
14:13But I also just think that him banking on Iyuk to basically just be released from the 49ers when everybody's
14:22known that this is going to be a fiasco from the start.
14:25But second, I think that no matter what, the wide receiver room should have been a huge focus.
14:33And it hasn't been for the past two years.
14:35And it's just been kind of a question mark in the whole roster.
14:39And I think that's one thing that's really setting Washington back.
14:43Yeah, I mean, it's a fair question.
14:45And they've continued to try to draft that position.
14:47And at least so far, the draft picks haven't hit at that position.
14:52Thanks for the call, dude.
14:52And one of the things that I thought was interesting when we were having this discussion last year about paying
14:56Terry McLaurin or not is so many people pointed out,
15:00well, Jaden can get it done without having an elite wide receiver.
15:04And I have utmost confidence in Jaden.
15:07So I believe that statement.
15:08When you say, you know, you could throw three jags out there with Jaden.
15:11And he can probably figure it out.
15:12Assuming health and, you know, a good scheme.
15:14I do believe that.
15:15But that's not how he should be operating on a rookie contract, JP.
15:19That's the point.
15:19Like, if he's making Patrick Mahomes money where he's making half a bill, then sure.
15:24Tell him to get it done with one guy and Terry McLaurin and a bunch of jags.
15:29But when you've got him on the rookie contract, that's when you should be able to help him out and
15:33try to maximize that.
15:35And I don't think they've necessarily done that.
15:37Now, Jaden's so special, assuming health this season, I think he'll go out there and have another really, really good
15:42season.
15:42And, you know, hopefully he's a pro bowler and an all-pro candidate.
15:45But I don't want to have to live that way in year three for a young quarterback.
15:50Let's go to Manny in Southeast.
15:52Manny, what's up, dude?
15:53Where do you weigh in on the hot seat?
15:54Hey, fellas.
15:55Hey, listen.
15:56I really don't think there's anyone on the hot seat unless, like you said, we start out all four, all
16:04five.
16:05Yeah, because if they really thought they was on the hot seat, do you think they would have instituted two
16:09rookie coaches on each side of the bowl?
16:18Especially when our defense was trash.
16:20It's a fair question, dude.
16:22And, like, there was all this talk of, like, the turnover from the Rivera era where the drafting was, like,
16:31you can't be playing that card anymore.
16:34It's three offseason though.
16:36And one more thing.
16:37These guys forget that we, 2024, it's only been two years.
16:422024, we said let Adam cook.
16:45So, in 2020, he cooked, got hurt.
16:49It's only been two years.
16:50We had to, like, go up to a round and round, Daniel Schneider, Earl, all over again.
16:55It's been two years.
16:56We had one year to the MSC championship.
16:58We had one year to everybody got hurt.
17:00So, we didn't do that good.
17:01Of course we're not going to do that good.
17:03You know what I mean?
17:04Like I was saying earlier, in recent, everybody talks about we good, but they still complaining about what we, the
17:16performance on Austin.
17:17It's impossible.
17:18Manny, it's a good call, bud.
17:20I appreciate the call, Manny.
17:21I do think fans' perspectives may not match ownership's perspective on wanting to give this time.
17:31And, dude, both those guys probably signed five-year deals, and Josh Harris doesn't like paying people not to work.
17:36Yeah.
17:37Like, you've seen it in the NBA.
17:38He's giving Sixers coaches long leashes.
17:40Let's sneak Kevin in real quick.
17:42Kevin, what do you think, man?
17:43What's up, Kevin?
17:44Hey, thanks for taking me.
17:45I appreciate it.
17:46Yeah, I think that Peter should be on the hot seat.
17:49I think he's made some terrible draft picks, some terrible trades.
17:53The Kinlaw thing last year was a total joke, and that's backfiring.
17:57I don't know why they paid him that big money, and the Lattimore trade was terrible.
18:02I think he's the bigger problem than Quinn.
18:06The Lattimore trade was terrible.
18:07The Kinlaw stuff I find interesting because I think the way people viewed his cash versus
18:14the reality of the cash at that position, he was paid like a second-tier dude.
18:21I mean, if you look just at AAV for what Kinlaw got, I mean, he's probably top 20, I would
18:31say.
18:31I mean, you can argue if he's a top 20 player or not, but I do think the conversation around
18:35his pay outpaces the reality of what he got related to his position group in the NFL.
18:41Now, he also played 17 games and had zero sacks.
18:44So, like, I get...
18:45Yeah, I think the tough part is I think there were guys that you could have got much cheaper
18:49that maybe could have given you, what, from our, you know, amateur eyes, a similar type
18:54of production.
18:54And real quick, the only issue I have with part of the reason why I would consider moving
18:59on is because last season, watching this team, it was something where it wasn't just injuries.
19:04Well, did it play a major role?
19:06Sure.
19:06But I watched this football team have a healthy game and they just didn't look good.
19:10So it's not just, oh, they were injured and they'll be back to being just fine.
19:14The Vikings game was the first fireable offense of the new regime.
19:18Yes.
19:18They came out flat, off a bye, and it was a disaster.
19:22And I said it then and I stand by that.
19:24That was the first, what are these dudes doing?
19:27It's not good enough.
19:28Now, they did respond late in the year and get some wins, but complicated issue.
