00:00Finley, our own host here on The Fan via NBC4.
00:04Welcome back, Grant and Danny on The Fan.
00:08I want to get into the World Cup and Team USA having a more difficult road
00:12after some of the results this weekend in a minute,
00:15but we're talking Anthony Davis and the possibility he ends up being traded
00:20to the Warriors.
00:20They want to try to pair he and LeBron with Draymond Green and Steph Curry
00:24for one big push, reminiscent of the old Lakers when I was a kid
00:28of getting Gary Payton and Carl Malone and that crew together.
00:32Let's go to Shane in Fairfax.
00:33What's up, Shane?
00:35Commander Danny, Lieutenant Grant, how are you boys doing today?
00:38What's up, buddy?
00:39Hey, look, I'd take anything for him right now.
00:42Like I told JB and Finley, I'd take some hot wings and hot sauce for him
00:45at this point.
00:48He's got to go.
00:49He's not going to play here.
00:50He doesn't want to be here.
00:51You can hear it in this man's voice.
00:52Why do we want him here?
00:54So he can play 30 games?
00:55He's not going to be here.
00:57I don't think he's going to help this team anyway.
00:59All he's going to do is hurt our young players.
01:02They're just going to hurt our young players.
01:04And what are we doing getting older?
01:06The Jimmy Butler thing.
01:07Why don't we just call Larry Bird and see if he wants to come out
01:09of retirement, too?
01:10But you can still shoot it.
01:13But Shane, I hear you, but let me say this, and I appreciate the call
01:17as always, buddy.
01:18Him playing here wouldn't be for him to play here.
01:21Does that make sense?
01:22Like no one's going, that's the centerpiece of our championship team.
01:26A.J.
01:26DeBotts is the centerpiece of our championship team, God willing.
01:30Anthony Davis is, we're all using each other, right?
01:34Again, I keep pointing to him.
01:35He's a higher profile player, but the same way C.J.
01:37McCollum, we used him.
01:38He used us.
01:39Neither one cared, right?
01:40We're getting our share.
01:41Bob Seger.
01:42But spun him to Atlanta.
01:43We got picks.
01:44That was part of the deal.
01:46That's the idea here is for that.
01:49Now, it becomes more complicated if you've got to sign Davis to an extension.
01:53I still think that would be the case, though, by the way.
01:56He wouldn't be signing with the Wizards to be with the Wizards because their
01:59timetable doesn't match up.
02:00They're not going to count on him.
02:02They're hoping that Sarr is their Anthony Davis, right?
02:05The pieces don't totally fit for them to be great.
02:08They fit for them to be better, but I still think he would be spun.
02:11But just, he'd have a contract attached.
02:12It would just, you know, facilitate for the next thing.
02:14The thing that I worry about, though, Grant, and I brought this up before,
02:17but I really mean this, because there are so few premium, honest-to-goodness
02:21difference-makers in the NBA, whereas in the NFL and Major League Baseball,
02:24you can always go, I'll find the next two-war player, the two-and-a-half-war
02:27player, the three-war player.
02:29When you've got one of these dudes in the NBA, there's so few of them,
02:32they've got all the power.
02:33The players wield the power.
02:35And really, their agents behind the scenes, especially Rich Paul, wields the
02:38power.
02:38If you don't play ball with them, what does that mean long-term?
02:41That's the open-ended question here that I'm really worried about.
02:44I don't know.
02:45No, I can't allow that to box me in to a terrible decision.
02:49Agreed.
02:50Any kind of fear about retribution from an agent or agency or upsetting LeBron
02:56and like that group of NBA stars or whatever, I can't worry about that.
03:02I've got to do what's best for biz.
03:04I've got to do what's best for the Wiz.
03:06Four years and $275 million is the max they can give him.
03:09Here's what makes me uncomfortable.
03:11When you watch some of these shows on television that talk a lot of NBA all day long,
03:16I saw the FS1 one with Nick Wright and Chris Broussard today.
03:23They were throwing out the idea of the Wizards paying Anthony Davis like it wasn't a crazy
03:28thing.
03:29That's what bothers me and worries me.
03:31Like, am I the one on crazy pills?
03:33Four years and $275 million for Anthony Davis should be a complete non-starter.
03:40That is not an acceptable idea.
03:42If the idea is, oh, they could just extend him and build around him, wrong.
03:47I mean, he's only 32 going on 50.
03:51It's hilarious to me that actually Jimmy Butler's five years older than Anthony Davis.
03:55You realize that?
03:56Yeah.
03:56Like, they would be going from a 32-year-old to a 37-year-old.
03:59Anthony Davis, from a sheer age standpoint, is not done.
04:02He's not like some based on age, broken down, final breath player.
04:07But we all know the mileage and the durability concerns and the injury history.
04:12The Trey Young contract, which I did not like, can be explained away and I think could still
04:18work very well for them.
04:19A 4-275 for Anthony Davis is, to me, like organizational malpractice.
04:26That needs to not be a consideration, period.
04:29If it is to have him be the centerpiece here.
04:32But even if it's just that he's going to be traded in seven months.
04:36Even then?
04:37After they sign him for 4-275?
04:39Yeah.
04:40You think that someone, they got him for nothing.
04:43Someone's going to take on three and a half and two whatever of Anthony Davis?
04:48I don't see that.
04:49It's, this is the league now.
04:51I mean, again, he was traded at the max a handful of years ago from New Orleans to L.A.
04:55That's a lot of basketball ago.
04:57Of course it is.
04:58They got him for A.J. Johnson and a bag full of random candies from the candy eyes.
05:02Yeah, Brandon Ingram and a whole bunch of other guys.
05:04And I'm not saying it would go down like that exactly, but the huge money stuff, it seems
05:09prohibitive to us on the outside, but it's, there's a reason Jimmy Butler's got to be
05:14included in the deal because the contract is so exorbitant.
05:16Anybody here make over 55 million bucks?
05:19There's one guy.
05:20He's got to be part of the trade.
05:21It's for the next one.
05:22I don't see him signing here as he's the franchise.
05:26If that's the case that they're thinking is he's the franchise, I'm with you.
05:29Let's, let's, let's do a picket line.
05:31Let's go, let's storm around with signs and say, no, thank you to that.
05:34But it's bigger for me.
05:36There, I will, like, that's not something I play along with.
05:39The Trey Young thing, yeah, okay, you can talk me into it.
05:42You need a offensive engine.
05:43You need your, you know, your guy to set up the kids.
05:46He's going to make everyone better.
05:47He's going to get them their shots, whatever.
05:50Four and 275 from Anthony Davis ruins so much of the goodwill that they have built up.
05:56I have zero interest in that.
05:58I don't know if I'm in the minority, the majority.
06:01I don't know where I am with Wizards fans on that.
06:03But to me, like, the second I found out they did that extension, if you're doing a deal
06:08and the selling point, Danny, is, well, they might be able to trade him soon.
06:13That's not a good reason to do that.
06:15Like, they could trade him, as we're finding out now, without doing the deal.
06:19There's a team that wants him currently.
06:21If he gets no deal, shows up, plays 15 games, creeping up on the deadline,
06:26someone will trade him for something.
06:28I don't think you're getting a ton more at four and 275 than you would if you're just
06:32trading him in, you know, November or December this year, after he's played a little bit
06:36of basketball.
06:37No, I'm with you.
06:37I guess I'm just trying to, that devil's advocate, I don't even know what I'm trying
06:40to say.
06:41It's just that this league and contracts just works differently than everybody else.
06:45The NFL's got their own version of that, where you go, this is worth $100 million.
06:49Actually, it's worth $27 million.
06:50That's the guaranteed money.
06:51It's void after two years.
06:52They can just cut him.
06:53That's their version of this.
06:54Baseball is pretty true.
06:57This one is still, is murky.
06:59We're coming close to, you know, having enough years and data on this where I understand you
07:05got the max money.
07:05I get that you got this many years, but not really.
07:08Whether you're the centerpiece or not, I think it always kind of varies.
07:11I mean, look at Charlotte and the Mellow Ball, for example.
07:13That was the guy they were building around.
07:14Oh my God, thank God we got rid of him.
07:16It turns that quickly.
07:17And somebody's always going to be desperate to take on big money to fit some of these contract
07:20rules.
07:21Yeah.
07:22Any cap rules.
07:23They'll immediately start selling it either way, by the way, as like, this is our guy,
07:27just like with Trey Young.
07:28You don't know how it's going to end.
07:29I want to skip all of that.
07:31I don't want to do any of that.
07:33Grant and Danny on the fan.
07:35Brandon Ayuk at a busy weekend on social media.
07:37We'll get into that next.
