00:02From across the pond and into the fire, for the past 12 months the state's top cop has
00:08made it his mission to cut violent and dangerous crime.
00:11Do you think Victorians feel safer under your leadership?
00:14We are very much about ensuring people feel safe because that's as important as being
00:19safe.
00:20Overall, crime has dropped slightly in the past year.
00:23There have been big decreases in aggravated home invasions and armed robberies, but the
00:29chief says he's only getting started.
00:31We've set ourselves the target of reducing serious crime and harm by 5% every year.
00:37Now we've managed to plateau where we were before.
00:40That's only a start.
00:42It's not just high crime rates that have kept the forces hands full.
00:46It's had some notable wins, like the arrest of exiled underworld kingpin Kazem Hamad.
00:52And a travel faux pas where Mike Bush opted for a police chopper instead of a commercial
00:57flight.
00:57It was the wrong thing to do.
01:00There's also been momentous tragedy.
01:03Two officers murdered and a mountain manhunt that's prompted Mike Bush to arm Alpine police
01:09with more powerful weapons.
01:11Very keen to make sure some of our rural staff are equipped with long arms.
01:15Well there is no more traumatic incident for police than the brutal, cold-blooded murder of
01:24two of your officers and the serious injury of one other.
01:27The chief says he has his sights set on the next 12 months and beyond.
01:31He wants to fill more than 1,500 vacancies in the force by 2028 and continue slashing red
01:37tape to put more officers back on the street.
01:39We really are there for the public.
01:42And we want them to trust us to do our very best to be there.
01:45We need to do our best to be there.
