00:01:43been gaining on him for a while hamilton's going to go dancing around the outside of turn six but he's
00:01:48going to try to anyway and has got that advantage over charles leclerc who made him work for it but
00:01:54hamilton's up to fifth piastri's up to fourth and charles leclerc is not having the greatest of days
00:01:59that is the second great move we've seen from lewis around the outside of turn six so he did that
00:02:04with
00:02:04had charles leclerc is now boxing did something come off his front wing as well i just wonder
00:02:09if something came off charles leclerc's front wing like an end plate either way if he was boxing
00:02:14not quite sure why yeah ferrari should have called it off he fought it so hard but it happened and
00:02:22no one's any the worst aware for it unless looking at that front wing i can't oh yes something did
00:02:27on the right hand side it is missing a piece of end plate but clearly they've decided not to take
00:02:34the time penalty would have been to change their front wing and they're just going to let him manage
00:02:38it to the end of the grand prix so i wonder if they made that call after he was passed

00:02:43because that was still halfway around the lap but if they didn't if they were anyway going to pull him
00:02:48in they should have called it off earlier because in the end it's cost them both the race time really
00:02:53right we'll see how this evolves and while we see how this evolves the staff of 1.7 seconds behind
00:02:59george russell what happened to russell on lap 35 and yeah he ran wide at turn three hairpin property
00:03:04a small lock-up but it had big consequences almost right off the track so hemorrhaged a lot of lap
00:03:10time on that particular one feels like he's really starting to struggle on this set of hard tires
00:03:15max verstappen says he feels happy on the hard tires when asked so they're likely to go for another one
00:03:21on the next round of pit stops craig slater asked max you know could he win this race today and

00:03:27you know could he do something in this race i'll do my best to go and entertain he said
00:03:31and that's exactly what he's doing it's a it's a typical max verstappen sunday afternoon isn't it

00:04:56now between russell and verstappen out in front kimmy antonelli championship leader running quite a
00:05:02lonely race to be honest if you can ever have a lonely race here on a 2.6 mile circuit

00:05:07the staff is only three tenths away from getting the overtake mode yeah five-time winner five-time
00:05:13pole sitter three sprints three sprint poles he is a bit of a master on the circuit bernie collins
00:05:18isn't he max verstappen he is indeed now what i was going to say is watch for oscar piastri does
00:05:23he box this lap to cover the charlotte claire undercut threat he obviously he was ahead of charlotte
00:05:29carony box it needs to be this lap to cover it but the player has again gone for hard tire
00:05:34which
00:05:35did him student that well in that middle stint well we're watching on the driver tracker at the
00:05:40moment because oscar piastri is making his way around turn nine and towards the final corner
00:05:44under investigation mentioned that fernando alonso for that speeding incident oscar piastri stays out
00:05:51and stays ahead of lewis hamilton that gap 1.2 seconds russell to verstappen who i should mention
00:05:59has led 338 laps here and has got eight podium finishes as well just to finish your stat about
00:06:05why this place is so so special for him and this could be another special afternoon coming his way
00:06:12at a track where max verstappen won from fourth in 2018 from second in 2019 from pole in 21 and
00:06:20the
00:06:20second race in 21 and from pole in 2023 and there he is now just 1.2 behind george rossler
00:06:29but this is
00:06:30where it starts to get a bit tricky from turn six all the way around to the end of the
00:06:34lap because
00:06:35he's now with what we call the dirty air there's the turbulent air coming off the back of the mercedes
00:06:40that's affecting the front wing the aerodynamic performance of the red bull but verstappen now
00:06:46pops the wing open and comes down the start finish straight and actually for the first time in a
00:06:53little while only gained 400 on george and i think that's because we're now in that dirty air we see
00:06:59him have that wobble out of turn one as well would you say it's one thing to catch another thing
00:07:03to
00:07:03pass is that what you're trying to say career channel murray walker said it an awful lot properly
00:07:07didn't he in all those years of commentary and he was not wrong not ever max verstappen hunting down
00:07:13george russell fernando alonso did get that five second penalty by the way uh for speeding in the
00:07:18pit lane it's not really going to make much of a difference to his afternoon and i caught a shot
00:07:22of him actually in the aston martin garage he had his feet in a like a cold towel uh without
00:07:27his shoes
00:07:27on before uh before he went back to his car after the laps to the grid doing his best to
00:07:33keep as cool as
00:07:34possible well just looking at uh our team on the grid natalie jamie and anthony who just explained
00:07:41to us how their feet were absolutely melting so i'm not surprised it's the sort of day that makes
00:07:46you hopping mad ted kravitz just to try and keep one foot cool at least oh it's not so bad

00:07:51do the malaysian grand prix in a fire soup heaven's sake think you think it's hot now think back then
00:07:57right uh just behind me is the grandstand at turn one and turn two and it's full of max verstappen
00:08:03fans who sense the victory oh team radio no just oscar piastri being told he's coming into the pits
00:08:08yeah i can see uh uh the the pit guys actually the ferrari lewis harris guys are out there as

00:08:15uh yeah ted do you want to take it away i'll take this away for the moment and let's just

00:08:19to the pit crew here uh to see who uh can be fastest changing the tires that was neat uh
00:08:24for oscar
00:08:25piastri 2.3 seconds ferrari will do well to beat that hamilton comes out uh still behind but they
00:08:30did beat it by a tenth of a second so the crew's doing their bit for their driver and we'll
00:08:35see
00:08:35charles leclerc going through now uh with piastri and hamilton coming onto the track ted back to you
00:08:41so that's the third and uh you would certainly hope the final stop for lewis hamilton isn't it we'll see
00:08:46what he does uh on those tires but if we can have the battle between russell and verstappen
00:08:53on the two stoppers then that is going to start in about three laps time uh in fact i see
00:09:00some
00:09:00movement i think russell yeah mercedes are coming out they don't want to give verstappen the undercut
00:09:05and red bull are coming out too and they've gone back in again so have red bull kind of thrown
00:09:11the
00:09:11dummy here because george russell is coming into the pits and max verstappen has carried on
00:09:16on his way russell stops now watch that beautiful out he goes 2.3 seconds perfection
00:09:23yeah so good stop there for mercedes i think that ferrari and mclaren had to react to hajar there
00:09:30so they've come back out both a second ahead of hajar they didn't want to drop behind him
00:09:34as bernie was saying before by staying out those extra couple of laps they've ended up behind charles
00:09:41leclerc now so leclerc's got track position but of course his tires what are they roughly five laps
00:09:47now i think older than piastri and hamilton yeah charles leclerc has been on his tires for six laps
00:09:54currently yeah so i think that that's sort of all played out in the positions further down where does
00:10:02antonelli slot into all this this that's where we've got to keep an eye on it right because he's
00:10:07he's done the hard work he does the overtaking on track now and his pace has been solid so let's
00:10:13see where he plays out in all of this yeah his pace is better than max verstappen's uh currently he's
00:10:18just biding his time and as i say running a bit of a lonely race and but verstappen isn't that
00:10:23far
00:10:23ahead of him uh isaac hajar uh currently finding himself uh down in uh eighth place and the uh the
00:10:30cars ahead of him a few back markers uh before he can get towards uh lewis hamilton
00:10:36who's now down in seventh and still behind oscar piastri yeah that's that's bad from ocon i think
00:10:42ocon should have got out of the way there before turn six and let hajar pass and he's still holding
00:10:46him up through seven and eight i don't know what ocon's doing there and he's been shown the blue flag
00:10:50three times yeah i think hajar will be annoyed with that because really espan ocon should have
00:10:57let him past into turn six and you know it's cost hajar a lot of time there coffee uh it
00:11:02certainly
00:11:03has oscar piastri fastest man on the track currently his teammate at lando norris not mentioned a huge
00:11:11amount i wonder if lando norris is trying to do a one stop here so uh yeah best you can
00:11:17at this stage
00:11:18of the race we'll just try to build a bit of a tire offset hope he gets into trouble towards
00:11:21the end
00:11:25that just been told lando norris by will joseph the other cars will have to stop the opportunity
00:11:30for us is just the best version of yourself uh he might not have the pace here can he whisper
00:11:36those
00:11:37tires to a one stop at the end of this race it's a bit of a life mantra that isn't
00:11:41it the best version
00:11:42of yourself we should all do that we try we try we don't always succeed but we definitely try i'm
00:11:48sure lando's trying too so verstappen last lap a one twelve three he's got a four point three second
00:11:54gap over kimmy antonelli whose last lap was a one eleven eight um kimmy antonelli has significant
00:12:00pace over max verstappen bernie collins two seconds no when kimmy keeps extended but stop is going to keep
00:12:07where it's extended and put us under risk so explain that message from george russell because he's
00:12:13worried george russell is doing the strategy for three cars around him crafty isn't he because
00:12:18he's saying that verstappen at some point will stop emerge behind george russell and that means that
00:12:25russell's looking after his tires he knows that there's a chance for stopping if it's a medium
00:12:29higher and comes back up at the end but would verstappen do that if kimmy's ahead and potentially can
00:12:35come into play with blocking him and all these things so russell's trying to promote kimmy to
00:12:39stop and that might promote for stopping to stop and then it reduces the risk for george at the end
00:12:45of the race so george is doing the strategy for all three bernie if you were doing the strategy for
00:12:50kimmy antonelli would you ask him to go to the end of this race without stopping i don't have all
00:12:57the
00:12:57time information but kimmy antonelli is in the strongest position he stopped the latest for
00:13:02that hard tire so there is more chance of kimmy antonelli being able to do it than others the
00:13:08alternative is the soft looked quite good for lewis hamilton so can kimmy extend long enough to put a
00:13:14soft tire on and then be able to stop him at the end or get the bsc that he missed
00:13:20earlier on
00:13:21lots of activity behind bernie collins in the pit lane liam lawson and nika hulkenberg and ollie
00:13:25bearman uh coming into the pits and lance stroll's going to come into the pits in a moment to retire
00:13:30the car sort of forgot about lawson's fire didn't we it's it's obviously put itself out and he's
00:13:34managed to carry on doing another see the fire at the time he's done another 44 laps so uh you
00:13:42know
00:13:42yeah uh there you go so lawson is uh he's out on track linblatt has come into the pits on
00:13:48this lap
00:13:49so let's just take stock now properly a little bit because verstappen has done a 12-3-8 on that
00:13:57last
00:13:57lap george russell an 11-0 so by putting on those fresh tires george russell over the last couple of
00:14:04laps has really really taken chunks of time out now what bernie was explaining there is obviously when
00:14:12verstappen switches and as his race engineer champion lambesi was saying you'll have a tire offset
00:14:17he will make that back but the gap's going to open up and we're going to get that ebb and
00:14:22flow effect
00:14:23over this phase of the grand prix lando norris pits and forth that's the end of that theory about the
00:14:28the one-stop strategy there oscar piastro is on the hunt for charles de claire maximum staff has
00:14:33probably got another two laps where he can stay out and if there is a virtual safety car make a
00:14:38pit
00:14:38stop and still be ahead of george russell after which time he's going to come out behind him
00:14:43whatever happens here's the run through turn two up the hill climbing to the highest point of this track
00:14:49turn three inside line oscar piastri charles claire uh was expecting that didn't fight it too hard
00:14:56and now thinks right is there a chance to get in the slipstream and get oscar piastri into turn four
00:15:02but
00:15:02piastri's already got four five car lengths uh on him before they hit the braking zone and oscar
00:15:07piastri makes that fifth place his own it's a funny business f1 isn't it you know only a couple
00:15:14of weeks ago we're looking at ferrari being a match for mercedes lewis hampton winning a race
00:15:19on pace okay a little bit of luck with the safety car but he had pace and then which you
00:15:26know the next
00:15:27grand prix this just shows the competitive element of all of those top teams they're not pushing hard
00:15:33they're bringing developments they're making changes and this is going to be a fascinating
00:15:37season he might still be on for a podium today lewis hamilton oh lancestrol retiring and lando norris
00:15:43coming into uh the pits and taking advantage of the fact that mclaren had the first garage there
00:15:49uh to just nip past the aston martin as it was trundling its way in as he comes out is
00:15:55that an
00:15:55unsafe release no he he backed off and had to because franco colopinto was boxing could you see
00:16:00the mechanic on the rear wing cleaning the slot on the rear wing there so clearly he's picked up some
00:16:05debris or marbles or something else and they uh they had a mechanic there just giving a good old clean
00:16:12now max verstappen wants to come in i think and is going to come in uh to the pits my
00:16:18tires are dead
00:16:19he says so he had a two seconds gap uh by the time he made that pit stop over kimmy
00:16:25antonelli
00:16:26who carries on and retakes the lead of this austrian grand prix george russell will head into a second
00:16:33place and uh where's charlotte claire max verstappen should be out ahead of him russell does go through
00:16:40and move up into uh to second place i think hamilton's got the pace to get some overtaking
00:16:45done and be on the podium by the end of this race if that ferrari three-stop strategy is is
00:16:50going to
00:16:50work out for him but uh we shall see uh through goes one of the back markers that's nico hulkenberg
00:16:55verstappen pit stop is done and now he's got fresher tires than george russell by about six laps it's the
00:17:03hard tire that has gone on for max verstappen and he's on the chase again ted down to you brand
00:17:09new
00:17:10hard tires but he he suffered really in those last laps okay give me this go just maintain the focus
00:17:18what antonelli really needs and you could argue what the staff really needed was another incident
00:17:22that might have caused a virtual safety car a safety car they didn't get it so did we hear
00:17:26earlier that max said i don't agree with this strategy which lambiazzi said copy but anyway he's
00:17:32now gonna try and hunt down george russell who's locked into to his tire for the end of the race
00:17:37but
00:17:37those last few laps cost the staff and deer on that aging hard tire he did lose a bit of
00:17:42time maybe
00:17:43max felt he should have fitted a couple of laps earlier yeah the gap was down to 1.2 and
00:17:48it's now
00:17:4910.7 so max by staying out as as you said there ted with the tires being pretty dead in
00:17:56his own words
00:17:56he's ended up losing nine and a half seconds kimmy antonelli pits max verstappen will still be ahead of him
00:18:07and that's the back of the staff has got to fend off straight away and then see about george russell
00:18:13yeah i think that now suggests that antonelli will come off nearly two seconds behind max and don't
00:18:19forget max is on fresh tires you know antonelli's going through what max just went through on the last
00:18:25lap he's lost 1.2 seconds to george his tires are now 26 laps old so he's going through that
00:18:32same pain
00:18:33you know the terminology we use is going off the cliff in terms of the tire grip and performance
00:18:40it kind of feels like antonelli's hit that point now what would you do if you're ferrari and fred
00:18:44verser at the moment would you uh would you ask charles to move to one side antonelli is coming out
00:18:49the mercedes crew are are waiting for him is charlotte claire gonna hold up hamilton on a racier
00:18:56strategy antonelli has uh boxed as you can see now might have been slightly slower stop it was by about
00:19:05four tenths of a second uh than others that he is racing with i i think ferrari do have to
00:19:10swap the
00:19:11cars because leclerc's managing that front wing damage yeah we saw earlier his tires are older than
00:19:17hamilton's by five laps so he's on older tires he's nursing a front wing damage he looks like he's
00:19:23struggling for pace so if ferrari want to set one car off after piastri i think they have to swap
00:19:30it
00:19:30and are they swapping it now well it looks like they are hamilton's got the pace anyway charlotte
00:19:34claire's not fighting that one hamilton is up into fifth place just before we saw that lando norris has
00:19:42been noted for a pit lane infringement we saw him pulling into the the slow lane and going through where
00:19:47well that where the uh park ferme will be at the end of this race to get uh his uh
00:19:51pit box i could
00:19:53ask bernie collins on the pit wall whether that's actually allowed or not they obviously felt that or
00:19:58lando obviously felt that it was was it putting anyone in danger i'm not sure i did see any personnel
00:20:04there virtual safety car now why have we got a virtual safety car we've got some debris on the track
00:20:10race is being neutralized i think there's some debris in turn three oh yeah but one of the bollards
00:20:15has uh has come away so that's not going to be a virtual safety car for long and it's alex
00:20:22albon
00:20:23that looks like uh he hit it oh dear that happened two laps ago max verstappen could have uh got
00:20:29a very
00:20:29cheap pit stop out of that one and alex didn't so much hit it as collected to be honest
00:20:35yeah greedy with the inside curve and the bsc is now ending so as you said crofty a very short
00:20:40virtual safety car there and i think it's only pierre gasly bernie who was in the pits was it
00:20:47it was only pierre gasly but kimmy antonelli second time in a row has stopped one lap before the bsc
00:20:55yeah i tell you what he'll picks it he'll pick some lottery numbers and it'll win next week not this
00:21:00week the rate he's going here uh charlotte claire right on to the restart very quickly indeed all
00:21:05over the back there of lewis hamilton as they made their way through turn three dropping down the hill
00:21:10now hamilton seems to have this one covered but we'll just follow this uh for a little while there's
00:21:15only 40 meters between the two cars before they go into that braking zone and ted we can head to
00:21:20you
00:21:23a couple of things you are you're not allowed to overtake uh in the pit lane so
00:21:27uh maybe that will be investigated does it say it'll be under investigated after the race it's
00:21:31for lando it's just noted and we'll see what the stewards say okay i mean he'll have a good reason
00:21:37but i'd be a bit nervous about that one but lando has such a disappointing uh race after being passed
00:21:43by his teammate early on has just been involved and uh delayed here and there and now sort of
00:21:48languishing down in eight just ahead of the racing bulls who by the way it was linblad leading lawson
00:21:54but they more or less changed positions during the stops and now it's solidly lawson leading linblad
00:21:59gasly did benefit as bernie says by pitting just now while everybody else was going slowly but i'm
00:22:04not sure it's going to make any difference in his fight with hulkenberg ahead and bernie to you
00:22:10yeah quick one have you got enough jeopardy in this avery is crafty or would you like some more i'd
00:22:14love
00:22:14some more go on well you know where our hotel is so it's currently rain very close to there so

00:22:21about 10 miles from the circuit there is some rain coming up on the radar and that is something that
00:22:27teams are going to have to watch because it's so so hard to monitor here these pockets of rain just
00:22:33emerge when they get over the hill and if it's anywhere it'll be turn three first so that's where
00:22:38to watch for the black clouds crafting take cover in judenberg if the rain is coming down could have done
00:22:44with that every single night this week it's been stifling hot in our hotel but is that rain going to
00:22:49come
00:22:50there's a 10 chance of a bit of rain uh here today that would very much mix things up yeah
00:22:56if you're
00:22:56at home if you need a drink quickly go do it now because if that rain hits us it will
00:23:02for the final
00:23:03six seven laps of this grand prix and you do not want to miss that bernie collins said i want
00:23:07a bit
00:23:07of rain i said what for the ratio but no i want a pit wall all afternoon i could really
00:23:10do with a hose
00:23:12pipe just being sprayed over us all on the pit lane by the end of it right george russell is
00:23:16leading
00:23:17eight point six six seconds the gap between himself and verstappen and verstappen is about
00:23:21four tenths faster a lap currently kimmy antonelli fastest man on the track five seconds behind
00:23:26verstappen and was about a tenth quicker than the red bull then comes oscar piastri lewis hamilton about
00:23:31four three tenths quicker uh than piastri but he's just he's got about two and a half seconds to try
00:23:37and uh make up then comes charlotte claire and isaac hadjar lando norris who's got pace on hadjar but
00:23:43six seconds to make up uh liam lawson and arvid limblad that's the points as they are at the
00:23:49moment colopinto into turn three is going to get esteban ocon and does feels like a bit of an
00:23:55anonymous race for lando norris isn't it you know he's on the same similar sort of tire life as hajar
00:24:01he's now five and a bit seconds behind hajar and it's just not quite hard to pace you know the
00:24:06gap between
00:24:07him and piastri bearing in mind they were battling properly when they're on lap one the gap between
00:24:11them now is over 10 seconds so uh yeah not a great race for the reigning world champion and a
00:24:18track
00:24:18where he's been a bit of a specialist in the past i said that hamilton had a bit of pace
00:24:22on on piastri
00:24:23last couple of laps now that has disappeared that gap has opened up and i wonder if hamilton's struggling
00:24:28once again on the hard tire that that ferrari seems better on the medium tire and the soft certainly
00:24:34than it does on the hard hajar on charles leclerc now hajar's going for this nice view of the back
00:24:40of that man's head and he can see what's happened with isaac hajar and charles leclerc coming out of
00:24:45the corner isaac hajar thought he had that overtake done but leclerc is going to battle away and might
00:24:50get the inside line going into turn four has got that inside line lock up from hajar as charles leclerc
00:24:56goes
00:24:57deep this isn't done yet on the exit hajar wow it's past charles leclerc and thank you very much
00:25:03here's sixth place yeah great great opportunistic move there to switch back for isaac had to add a
00:25:09little bit of a lock up but i think he'll get away without too much of a flat spot there

00:25:14definitely struggling for pace versus the red bull here and this time's up and i think both ferraris
00:25:23are struggling on these hard tires we can assume that's a negative word coming yeah
00:25:31he's he's already you could just see the red bull disappearing off into the distance no further
00:25:36investigation for landon or i think that's right i mean stroll was coming in to retire wasn't he
00:25:40look at leclerc just sliding you can see him and in fact gasly is that gasly in the lapped alpine
00:25:47behind him yeah no gas he's got much fresher tires um you know the moment his tires are only four
00:25:54laps
00:25:54old but he's sort of hanging on isn't he he's it's almost like he's being held up for pace there
00:25:58behind charlotte claire uh pierre gasly pitted didn't he behind that virtual safety car
00:26:05out in front 10th of a second max must happen faster than george russell on the last lap let's
00:26:10have a little look at george russell into turn one oh he doesn't want to be doing that very often
00:26:16uh going over the uh the sausage curb a little bit and uh taking to the runoff area did he
00:26:21have a bit
00:26:21of dirty air i think from the racing caller from home must have been potentially i guess at that point
00:26:27he's lost a bit of time uh round about nine tenths of a second on this lap uh if he
00:26:32does that a few
00:26:33more times lauren meckis will start smiling a bit uh wider i'm sure not that he's probably not smiling at
00:26:38the moment it's still an epic race max on the charge it's kind of what he likes to do isn't
00:26:44it lauren
00:26:46yeah it's uh it's uh it's a very good pace that uh that max is showing honestly um not sure

00:27:11an amazing race and uh and it's clear that we haven't been able to produce that sort of race
00:27:16space uh so far so it's a huge progress and a huge credit to everyone back in uh in milton
00:27:22kins but
00:27:22with six laps fresher tires do you think george russell might go off the cliff a bit and that gives
00:27:28max
00:27:28the advantage in the last five to six laps you know that's obviously what we are uh what we are
00:27:34targeting uh it's probably going to be uh uh a couple of laps shots but let's see max is pushing
00:27:40very
00:27:40hard and he's doing the magic and laura we saw that max struggling for pace at the end of that
00:27:45stand the gap opened up to from one second to over ten do you think that's that's cost you
00:27:53it's difficult to to know you know we will see at the end of the race uh to to drop
00:27:56these points
00:27:57whether or not uh these uh these uh uh last laps where they did not to hit the cliff again
00:28:02in the
00:28:03last stint uh we'll see uh whether uh was a george uh hit it to tell me laura thanks ever
00:28:09so much for

00:28:13checkered flag as lando norris goes down the inside on charles leclerc who's just said if we box again
00:28:18what we got to lose nothing was the reply from the ferrari pit wall and his tires have really gone
00:28:23off and you can see why there isn't much to lose because he hasn't got much to fight back with
00:28:27sadly
00:28:28he's down in eighth place for a man who started on the front row today charles leclerc running eighth
00:28:33lewis hamilton started third and he's currently running fifth and i think he's struggling a bit on
00:28:38these tires too and ferrari just haven't got the answers in these closing stages yeah it's not been a
00:28:43good race i mean look at how quickly had just scampered away hasn't he you know it's just
00:28:48broken off from leclerc and look at leclerc's still holding gasly up
00:28:53poor gasly you're pity for those fresh tires that he can't use them to good effect uh box box uh
00:28:59charles
00:28:59leclerc has been told that'll help you guys these uh mood i'm sure kimmy antonelli still the fastest man
00:29:05on this track and the gap between himself and george russell is 10 seconds now max verstappen caroon
00:29:11is in the middle of those two yeah but would you rule kimmy antonelli out of this at the end
00:29:17well let's see it depends on what on what laurent was saying earlier does george hit the cliff we saw
00:29:22max for example lose performance very quickly at the end of the stint and on the last lap he's gained
00:29:28six tenths on george the gap was 10.7 remember that number when max came out of the pits it's
00:29:35now down
00:29:35to 5.7 george was making his way through a few back markers lawson and linblad can't call them back
00:29:42markers they're actually scoring points here uh now max verstappen's got to do the same thing but
00:29:47antonelli is keeping max keen he's now under four seconds behind and uh verstappen under six seconds
00:29:54behind george russell that's your top three two mercedes and a red bull ted down to you
00:29:59so charlotte claire had a 46 second lead over liam lawson so could have made two stops actually
00:30:05he's only made the one let's put the soft tire on and uh so you might you never know you
00:30:09might get
00:30:09the fastest lap uh crofty not that we get a point for that anymore so we'll see what happens there
00:30:14but
00:30:15great job you've got to say of george russell holding off doing the lap times you need to do the
00:30:21staff has been told you need to be half a second quicker than russell per lap to make this at
00:30:24all
00:30:24close but it doesn't look like verstappen's going to be able to do that and you have to say good
00:30:29reaction from the mercedes team having uh had their um well their three-pointed star handed to them
00:30:35by ferrari last time out in barcelona they bounced back good bounce back ability by mercedes and george
00:30:42russell george russell who won the opening race of the season from pole position uh was in contention for a
00:30:49win of course in canada when he had that mechanical uh failure and the battery issue uh started on uh
00:30:56pole in barcelona and uh finished second with his teammate and championship leader kimmy antonelli
00:31:02retiring from the race so far so good for george russell today it will be heading into silverstone
00:31:10the british grand prix a very timely victory not just for british formula one fans but for a british
00:31:16driver in george russell too yeah and the gap uh last time around came down by only three tenths of
00:31:21a
00:31:21second so george has got nine laps to go now and at this rate he should be okay should be
00:31:30unless the
00:31:31rain comes you have fingers crossed there yes but also where you know this rain this rain you never know
00:31:39up in the mountains uh bernie collins hasn't uh hasn't got the waterproofs out yet uh to be fair
00:31:46she uh i have not crofty but what i was going to pick up on very quickly was what are
00:31:51these guys do
00:31:52now if there's a safety car if there's a safety car now these hard tires will really struggle at the
00:31:57restart and there should be a restart with nine laps to go like you say so i think a lot
00:32:02of the front
00:32:02runners would have to stop and put a soft on if we got a safety car in the next three
00:32:07four laps anything
00:32:08longer than that they'd expected to finish under safety car conditions and that's a burnt my lander
00:32:13safety car as opposed to the virtual safety car yeah correct crofty i think a virtual safety car the
00:32:20gaps don't close up so you might be okay on this tire uh to be fair only 38 laps have
00:32:26been run here behind
00:32:26the safety car in the last 14 grand prix and three sprints so since this race came back onto the
00:32:33calendar but my lander pretty much takes the weekend off yeah here never really used after lap one
00:32:39yeah exactly a lot of it's been lap one incidents hasn't it as we see now hajar in sixth norris
00:32:45in
00:32:46seventh they are pushing on so leclerc on those soft tires is what is he 24 seconds behind lando
00:32:54norris so looks like he's gonna sort of finish there it was a free stop why not take it in
00:33:00case
00:33:00there's a safety car you never know um what else are we watching here crofty antonelli on the last
00:33:06lap again sneaking up a little bit on to max Verstappen but it's sort of stabilizer i think george has
00:33:12broken the back of that Verstappen charge by just delivering consistent laps managing his pace just
00:33:19keeping it all under control i wonder if red bull will regret extending that stint and just giving
00:33:25you know they had george under pressure there they had max just 1.2 seconds behind they're piling the
00:33:31pressure on it felt like Verstappen had momentum you know he caught him down and it felt like he was
00:33:37starting to ramp up the pressure and it kind of feels like they've given george a bit of reprieve and
00:33:42you
00:33:42know what this reminds me of melbourne yeah when ferrari boxed and gave george a couple of laps to
00:33:49just you know they took out the the pressure yeah gave george a couple of laps to charge up the
00:33:54batteries and get himself into a sweet spot with tires and battery and i wonder if red bull will think
00:34:00maybe they just just took off that pressure a little bit there top three are all lapping within
00:34:05a tenth of a second of each other currently we're watching this isaac hajar lando norris battle for
00:34:09obvious reasons because lando norris is gaining uh on isaac hajar george russell cleared uh lawson and
00:34:16limblad a while back verstappen a while back and anton nelly has now just cleared uh the two racing
00:34:21balls so there's about eight and a bit seconds between the top three and no cars in between them
00:34:27but russell is now catching alex albon and just ahead of him esteban ocon who are the next back
00:34:33markers which as we saw with uh with hajar and ocon you know you catch him at the wrong time
00:34:39it can hold
00:34:40you up a bit verstappen has got driver of the day and the lead of that the moment still time
00:34:45to vote
00:34:45on that one and he's got 4.6 seconds between himself and george russell uh to try and make up
00:34:51in
00:34:51the last six or seven laps yeah and you know what you have to say that the red bull has
00:34:57been a match i
00:34:58think for the mercedes today because don't forget in that early phase of grand prix we had a fantastic
00:35:03battle between max and lewis but it cost him time it allowed russell to open up that gap to five
00:35:08seconds
00:35:09and it's now back to around that window isn't it and max having started fifth russell's having
00:35:14started on pole and the reason i'm mentioning it is there's been so much talk this weekend about again
00:35:19the future of max verstappen and again it's come back to laura meccy saying well if we give him a
00:35:25car
00:35:25that's fast enough to fight for victories fight for the world championships he's going to stay all the
00:35:31red bull bosses are here and i think this will help their conversations with team verstappen uh max uh
00:35:37wants to to see out his time with red bull said his manager raymond vermulian but he wasn't born to
00:35:43compete in the midfield was the second part of that quote that's the most important part of that quote
00:35:48and he's not in the midfield he's currently second he's just crossed the line now and that last lap
00:35:54was half a second faster than george russell and that time was made up in the middle and uh final
00:36:03sector and you know that traffic i was mentioning that was because he was behind alex albon and he's
00:36:10now just coming up behind esteban ocon and max verstappen has cleared albon as you can see there before
00:36:15they get the turn three so i don't think was held up quite as much so where traffic can play
00:36:21quite a
00:36:21part here yeah albon got nicely out of the way on the run up the hill to turn three so
00:36:26verstappen
00:36:27would have got the benefit of the toe and no loss through there so russell has now got a
00:36:33has espon ocon between himself and verstappen the gap has dipped below four seconds for the first time
00:36:40in a while first time certainly in this stint so verstappen is creeping up on russell but i i get
00:36:48the
00:36:48sense that this is a managed decline of the gap by george and mercedes yeah i don't think it's tire
00:36:54uh
00:36:55where i'm sorry tire degradation that is causing the the difference in lap times it's the back markers
00:37:00as it is kimmy antonelli has now cleared alex albon and he is under three seconds behind max verstappen
00:37:07lando norris is gaining on isaac hadjar as he fights right to the last to try and take sixth
00:37:13place in this race lewis hamilton pretty much running his own race now behind oscar piastri
00:37:18who's comfortable in fourth and ted kravitz down to you just tidying up some other stories um lance
00:37:25stroll retired you saw him come in to retire with a um energy recovery system failure just looking at
00:37:30fernando alonso who served his penalty and because he served that penalty and had the long pit stop
00:37:35i think he might be lapped by the guy in front of him he's 57 seconds behind alex albon isn't
00:37:42he
00:37:42yeah so not not this is not on pace but just a reflection of what a terrible weekend it's been
00:37:48for aston martin and it looks like not only will be fernando alonso be lapped by the whole field but
00:37:54he might be lapped if it goes on like this by williams in front of him ouchy uh an ouchy
00:37:59for lando
00:38:00norris who had to go over the curbs there at turn three uh george russell continues on his way there
00:38:06he is to complete yet another lap through comes max verstappen through comes kimmy antonelli they're
00:38:12going to cross the line now russell has to complete lap 67 verstappen crosses the line antonelli crosses
00:38:18the line there are less than six seconds between the top three after 67 racing laps yeah antonelli after
00:38:26a scrappy opening couple of laps where he was off the road multiple times he's he's not far off the
00:38:33lead is he and on that last lap took four tenths out of max verstappen he's still two seconds behind
00:38:38with three laps to go but i feel like after the the early adventures antonelli settled into a strong race
00:38:45here and has been very unlucky with the timing of his pit stops they've been normal pit stops and he's
00:38:51coming one lap before the virtual safety car on both occasions yeah but has he been unlucky or is it
00:38:58a
00:38:58case of he's just done the normal stops and he would have gotten lucky because in the end it just
00:39:03means
00:39:04he didn't get a disproportionate advantage to the others right the others didn't get a vsc stop so i
00:39:09think actually in a sense it's just been a an equal race rather than being an extra benefit to him
00:39:15i think
00:39:15when when the virtual safety car comes out and well when you've got a car stops on the track just
00:39:21before you've committed to coming into the pits or just after you've committed to coming into the pits
00:39:25that's a tad unlucky but i take your points yeah i think it's a you know you're you're you like
00:39:32being
00:39:32pedantic like me there's a difference between being unlucky and getting lucky and i think in this
00:39:39instance he didn't get lucky my wife said to me uh if you carry on being pedantic you will have
00:39:44uh less and less friends i said i think you'll find it's fewer to carry on he's told this joke

00:39:54and this time was no different it is my favorite gang uh right uh kimmy antonelli is now under two
00:40:00seconds behind max for staff and see max is gaining on george russell but kimmy is gaining on max by

00:40:08greater proportion look there is the gap here and kimmy anthony here's the carrots if indeed a young
00:40:1619 year old would like his carrots and he should eat his carrots and you should all eat your carrots
00:40:20there it is dangling in front of him anthony davidson yeah exactly property so i've been keeping an ear
00:40:26out for the the radio message to the sap and it was all about gap to the front gap in
00:40:30front is this
00:40:31you're catching you're catching the last couple of messages have been gap behind closing closing closing
00:40:36nothing to do with george anymore it's all about this guy behind's catching us uh by six tenths of a
00:40:42second on the last lap uh we could go down to the final lap here where kimmy antonelli has got
00:40:49boost
00:40:50extra half a megajoule of energy like the old drs like last lap lando uh to claim his maiden podium
00:40:57in formula one right here at the red bull ring well last lap kimmy could be the one this time
00:41:04around
00:41:04up against max verstappen yeah he's absolutely charging and the gap is now under one second so
00:41:09he will have the overtake available if he stays within this range on the final lap and they are
00:41:16not hanging they're not managing these tires anymore i can tell you you can see antonelli fastest personal
00:41:21best in sector one he is absolutely charging here oh verstappen was wide yeah at six he was wide at
00:41:28the
00:41:28apex at six and he's cost himself a bit more time there so there goes max verstappen kimmy antonelli just
00:41:34ahead of
00:41:34then george russell has just lapped fernando alonso and that might have slowed him down a little bit
00:41:38as well because verstappen's three tenths faster than russell on this lap but antonelli has got that
00:41:43boost as we head now towards the final lap of this race and that is how much he's gained in
00:41:49the last
00:41:492.3 laps gasly's having a go at hulkenberg as he races right to the end as well the gap
00:41:55between the top
00:41:56three under three seconds on the final lap of an austrian grand prix that has been won very much
00:42:03to remember there they go russell verstappen antonelli into turn three antonelli is within
00:42:11half a car length of max verstappen now can verstappen hang on here is kimmy antonelli going to try and
00:42:19get
00:42:20that extra three points for coming second and potentially put his championship lead at risk
00:42:25by making a late lunch we shall see as george russell now making his way through turn six he's
00:42:31only got four more corners to try and seal this win behind him antonelli is fighting as much as he
00:42:38possibly can to try and get past max verstappen but has verstappen got this in the bag this second
00:42:45place and what will be a ninth podium at the red bull ring george russell started on pole today and
00:42:51it's been a hot hot race and he has been the hottest of the lot now down the main straight
00:42:58he comes
00:42:58george russell wins the austrian grand prix max verstappen takes second for red bull at the red bull
00:43:05ring and kimmy antonelli charging to the line just three tenths behind him in third brilliant brilliant
00:43:12grand prix the top three covered by under two seconds that was absolutely enthralling superb the battle
00:43:20still carrying on this is pierre gasly behind niko hulkenberg lawson and limblad have finished in the
00:43:26points double points finished four racing balls they were a lap down piastri takes fourth place ahead of
00:43:33hamilton ahead of hajar and ahead of norris in seventh crossing the line the audi ahead of the alpine
00:43:40charles leclerc is uh right behind them and will take eighth place in this race and george russell back
00:43:47on the top step great job mate that was two years ago yabba-dabba-doo great job well well done
00:43:58george i'm happy
00:43:59well done thank you so so good team brasil pardon pardon everybody first time in his career he's won multiple
00:44:07grand prix at the same venue as well two years apart george russell uh is back on the top step
00:44:15as i say and back winning a race for the first time since australia yeah and very well deserved because
00:44:21you know there's a bit of controversy around that final lap but he'd done the hard work to get himself
00:44:26in that position ahead of antonelli even before we got to turn nine got off the line well executed his
00:44:34strategy well soaked up the pressure from this man back to step in who was outstanding today
00:44:39and uh delivered that victory and 25 crucial crucial points ah good job max well done throw uh
00:44:48throw the wheels off it as normal
00:44:55podium for max uh the staff at his 129th in formula one he's driver of the day too whatever controversy
00:45:03was in qualifying yesterday it wasn't over george russell he as he said at the time did exactly what
00:45:08he needed to do lift under a yellow flag the controversy is uh over how many yellows uh should
00:45:13have been waived at the time uh but that was a super win for george russell it will take him
00:45:17second in
00:45:18the championship as well heading into his home grand prix and bags of support i'm sure that
00:45:23he'll get at silverstone next week drink system failed nice race for it too so i'm a little bit
00:45:30thirsty great job well we'll have a drink ready for you on the podium yes it'll be in a in
00:45:37a rather
00:45:37large bottle it'll be cold and he'll be spraying it over everybody the uh uh the championship now
00:45:43antonelli russell hamilton in third and uh piastri and norris completing the top five
00:45:48in the championship that car looks like he's been in the horse a bit as well lots of gravel around
00:45:53this track uh flicking up bits of stones george russell well he could see them coming he could see
00:46:00verstappen he could see antonelli he was worried about antonelli uh to one stage in the race
00:46:06but all's well that ends well and a victory from pole position uh for the mercedes driver job done
00:46:15and when you're starting karuna run of four races in five weeks momentum is a good thing to have yeah
00:46:22i'm very pleased to george because you know barcelona didn't work out for him he'd been outstanding there
00:46:28in qualifying to take pole position in the race bit of an issue with the front wing meant he didn't
00:46:34have the
00:46:34pace he was quite disappointed not to win there and i'm really glad to see it back on top after
00:46:41the opening grand prix in melbourne which feels an awful awful long time ago probably yeah lewis
00:46:46hamilton started in third finished fifth the three stop didn't really work for ferrari that said to me
00:46:51they didn't have the pace on the hard tire today no i mean leclerc started second and finished eighth
00:46:56so uh really not a good day for ferrari after the highs of barcelona and uh these two men will
00:47:04go
00:47:04back to the debrief and i'm sure it will be a pretty pretty downbeat atmosphere in that ferrari debrief
00:47:12afterwards yeah potentially uh fastest man on the track in terms of speed uh was uh oscar piastri
00:47:19finished in fourth place i think that's a really solid result for oscar piastri today as well started
00:47:24seventh out qualified by his teammate survived the early skirmishes
00:47:34thermal degradation with rear tires is what you have to ward off here they all look like they've been
00:47:40in a hot one don't they yeah absolutely i mean they've had to work hard because there was no point
00:47:46where the pace just backed off nobody opened up a big enough gap at any point where they could just
00:47:52take a breather take a you know step back manage the pace nothing it was a it was an intense
00:47:58race where
00:47:59they had to keep pushing to the final corner the final lap and as we said it's quite rare to
00:48:03finish
00:48:04with the top three within two seconds isn't it as i say solid race for piastri i think mclaren will
00:48:10be
00:48:10really pleased with that as well after qualifying to admit they were a bit downbeat and the results of
00:48:17qualifying but the comeback take a fourth uh today was probably a bit more than than they were expecting
00:48:23on that one uh well played to the racing balls as well to lawson and limblad double points finish uh
00:48:28for them in a really solid race too and isaac hadjar you know two red bulls in the top six
00:48:33at the red
00:48:34bull ring yeah no very good for them i think for for piastri and mclaren they look at and go
00:48:39with they
00:48:39were 20 seconds behind red bull and it wasn't that long ago when they were in front of red bull
00:48:45so the
00:48:45big update that red bull have brought this weekend and that is encouraging for everybody in milton keen
00:48:51so anyone watching back to the factory they'll they'll take optimism out of this one that what they've
00:48:56brought has worked which has not always been the case with other teams this season very true i think
00:49:02mclaren have a small upgrade coming for uh for silverstone as well and the fans who brought the
00:49:07fans uh very much the correct strategy for today it is stifling stifling hot in those grandstands and
00:49:15the uh well i think everyone's been treated to to a cracking race uh certainly in the opening stages
00:49:20and absorbing right the weight uh to the end uh dc has the microphone in his hand he has the
00:49:27top three in
00:49:27front of him so george russell your second victory of the season your seventh of the career and it
00:49:35seems to me you ace qualifying you knew the rules that was a tough race you guys so close together
00:49:41at
00:49:41the end but a beautiful victory yeah incredible to be back on the top step it's been a little while
00:49:47so
00:49:47i'm definitely going to enjoy this one this evening a lot of hard work with my team to get us
00:49:52back on
00:49:53track obviously there's a tricky run of form at one point max and rebel was uh incredible they were
00:49:59incredibly quick this weekend so kudos to them but yeah thanks to everyone thanks to the fans it was
00:50:03pretty toasty out there so uh looking forward to a drink now yeah i can see drip on the underside

00:50:09your chin it's still coming off you so put us in the cockpit in these hot conditions because you had

00:50:15be on point the whole way through we saw you go a little bit wide up into three towards the

00:50:21the tires were starting to struggle but otherwise a well-managed race yeah i mean i was having to
00:50:26push every single lap and when you push those boundaries there's bound to be a small mistake
00:50:30or two in there and i knew just how quick the guys were behind obviously kimmy's been extraordinarily
00:50:35quick this whole season so every lap i was looking at the timing board we pitted on the early side
00:50:41i
00:50:41knew it was going to be a long stint but the the team timed it to perfection excellent well just
00:50:46moving
00:50:46along to max verstappen congratulations your second podium of the year as we lose our uh winner george
00:50:52you need to come back uh before we finish this interview um you were in the hunt you really had
00:50:59a chance out of the difficulties of qualifying we saw you take that big hit in turn nine and then
00:51:04to
00:51:05come and be that close to a victory you must be very happy yeah i think it was of course
00:51:10a very good
00:51:11race for us the first two laps were quite uh quite fun and then it was like basically just trying
00:51:17to
00:51:18yeah manage your your tires and honestly i think the car was in quite a good window uh for i
00:51:22would
00:51:22say a half of the race and then we just picked up a few uh let's say issues with the
00:51:27car uh which then
00:51:28yeah prevented me from basically finding that nice rhythm but still to to be second that close to a win
00:51:35i think is extremely positive for us so uh in that sense for sure i'm very happy yeah a very
00:51:41strong
00:51:41race also from your teammate you had you took that big hit in qualifying i it looked to me when
00:51:46you got
00:51:46out of the car you were moving a little gingerly is you carrying a residual injury or you're you're all
00:51:52good when you when you got from the car it looked like you were yeah i knocked my knees you
00:51:56know you
00:51:56you hit the bones sound very nice but today was okay so that was the most excellent well congratulations
00:52:02kimmy a little bit of an interesting first lap for you struggling to keep it on the track and thereafter
00:52:09you had to fight back yeah i mean i was a bit too excited in the first few laps and
00:52:15uh definitely
00:52:17didn't drive well did too many mistakes and even in the first thing on the medium
00:52:21lost uh three four seconds with the mistakes i was struggling with the brakes but then
00:52:26since i mean after i changed tire i reset and uh the pace was uh at the end was very
00:52:31strong and
00:52:32it was a shame that uh i joined the party a bit too late well you joined it maybe a
00:52:37bit too late
00:52:37but it gave us what was just a fantastic finish to this grand prix yeah i mean it was uh
00:52:43it was going
00:52:44to be you know two three formal uh laps would have been a lot of fun um but uh yeah
00:52:49of course congrats
00:52:50to george matt's uh really great weekend on my side uh there's a lot to improve but uh yeah still
00:52:56minimize the mistakes no congratulations with that and george just finally back to you you've managed to pull
00:53:01back 10 points within 40 goodbye gentlemen you obviously don't want to listen listen to you
00:53:07anymore um you're back in this hunt you needed a weekend like this and you've delivered yeah absolutely
00:53:13it's you know the the tough races definitely test you psychologically and these last two week
00:53:19weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself i can do it uh single lap race pace
00:53:26with very strong this weekend and on a track that is probably not very well suited my style so looking
00:53:31forward to heading to silverstone next week um seeing all the home fans i'm sure it's gonna be great

00:53:50caulthard the fans i'm amazed they've got the energy have a run in their thousands onto the track i mean
00:53:57i mean not this this is like the start of the london marathon four hours after the pace setters uh

00:54:02the ones who are on the track first that was in place yeah the um the promoter was telling me
00:54:08that
00:54:0850 of the people who came here this weekend stayed in the campsite right outside the track and i mean
00:54:15we could see the fireworks or the light show it was it was quite the atmosphere despite the heat here
00:54:20wasn't it certainly was uh champagne bottle signed by george russell uh to commemorate a victory and
00:54:29that's how close it was at the end less than two seconds separating the top three george russell takes
00:54:37his seventh career victory and his second here at the red bull ring which for a certain austrian who
