Lines from the story

A small pet shop tucked away in a corner of a
provincial town. A handwritten sign reading
“Puppies Seeking New Families” swayed on the
faded wooden door.
As the owner, Kenzo, unfolded a newspaper at
the counter, a boy around elementary school
age looked up at him nervously over the counter.
“Sir, that puppy over there... how much is it?”
Kenzo pushed up his glasses, smiled at the boy's
earnest eyes, and replied,
“Well, they're between thirty and fifty
thousand yen. They're all full of energy.”
The boy nodded slightly, then dug into his pants
pocket, jingling out some coins.“I only have
two thousand three hundred yen right now. But
can I just look?”
Kenzo's heart ached at the boy's desperate
expression. He whistled toward the back.
Five fluffy golden retriever puppies tumbled out
of the back room like rolling balls of fur,
bursting out energetically.

But the last one just couldn't keep up. That
puppy dragged one hind leg, desperately trying
to follow its siblings.
“Uncle, what's wrong with that one?”
The boy pointed at the puppy with the disabled
leg.
“Ah, that one. It was born with bad hips. The
vet said it'll never get better. It can't run
or jump like a normal dog.”
Kenzo shook his head sympathetically.
“So, that one isn't for sale.”
But upon hearing those words, the boy's eyes
suddenly lit up.
“I want this one. Uncle, sell this one to me!”
“Kid, you shouldn't. If you really insist on
having that one, I'll give it to you for free.
It's destined to be unsold anyway.”
Before Kenzo could finish speaking, the boy
frowned angrily.

"I don't want her for free. I don't think this
dog is any different from other dogs. She should
have exactly the same value as any other puppy.
That's why I want to pay properly. I'll leave
all the money I have right now. I'll come back
every month and pay five hundred yen from my
allowance."
Kenzo, bewildered, tried to reason with him.
“But you see, this dog can't run around with
you or chase balls. He can't play with you.”
At that moment, the boy silently rolled up the
hem of his pants.
Exposed on his left leg was a thick metal
prosthetic. It gleamed dully in the slanting
evening light.
Slowly lowering his pant leg, he met Kenzo's
stunned, speechless gaze and said with a gentle
smile,
“It's okay. I can't run either. I'm sure this
little guy wants a friend who understands how he
feels.”

Silence filled the shop. A single tear rolled
down Kenzo's cheek.
“...Yeah. Looks like that puppy found the
happiest owner in the world.”
The boy carefully lifted the puppy, hugging it
tightly as if to confirm its small warmth.
Then, the two with their troublesome legs
walked slowly home together into the evening
shadows, matching each other's pace.

00:01A small pet shop in a corner of a provincial city
00:03On the faded wooden door
00:05Puppies are looking for new families.
00:07A handwritten sign that read "..." was fluttering in the breeze.
00:09As the shop owner, Kenzo, was spreading out the newspaper on the counter...
00:12A boy who looked to be in the lower grades of elementary school
00:15He looked extremely nervous.
00:16I looked up at Kenzo across the counter.
00:18Hey mister, how much does that puppy over there cost?
00:21Kenzo adjusted his glasses.
00:22She smiled as she looked into the boy's honest eyes.
00:25Yeah, I'd say somewhere between 30,000 and 50,000 yen.
00:28All the children are full of energy!
00:29The boy nodded slightly.
00:31Putting my hands into my pants pockets
00:33He took out some coins, making a jingling sound.
00:35I only have 2300 yen right now.
00:38But just watching is fine too.
00:40Kenzo was deeply moved by the boy's desperate expression.
00:43I whistled towards the back.
00:45Then, a ball of fur rolled out from the back room.
00:48Five fluffy Golden Retriever puppies
00:51He came flying out with great force
00:52However, the very last one always seems to lag behind.
00:56The child was dragging one of its hind legs.
00:59He was desperately trying to keep up with his other brothers.
01:01Uncle, what happened to that girl?
01:03The boy pointed to the disabled puppy.
01:07Oh, that girl.
01:08I was born with a problem with my hip joint.
01:10The vet told me it would never heal.
01:12They can't run or jump like normal dogs.
01:16Kenzo shook his head sympathetically.
01:18That's why that girl isn't marketable.
01:21However, the boy's eyes, upon hearing those words...
01:24It suddenly shone brightly
01:25I want this child.
01:27Uncle, sell this child to me.
01:29You should be careful, little boy.
01:30If you really want that child
01:33I'll give it to you for free.
01:34It's a fate that no one can change anyway.
01:36Before Kenzo had finished speaking
01:38The boy frowned angrily.
01:40How many times will it go for free?
01:42I can't believe this dog is different from other dogs.
01:44I don't think so.
01:45She should be just as valuable as all the other children.
01:48That's why I want to pay properly.
01:51I'm leaving behind all the money I have right now.
01:53He'll pay the rest by coming to pay 500 yen each month from his allowance.
01:57Kenzo said, somewhat bewildered, as if trying to enlighten him.
01:59But this child
02:01Running around with you
02:03I can't even chase the ball.
02:05I can't play with you.
02:07At that moment, the boy silently rolled up the hems of his trousers.
02:10On the boy's exposed left foot
02:12He was wearing a thick, metal prosthetic leg.
02:15It was bathed in the light of the twilight.
02:17It was shining faintly.
02:18The boy slowly lowered his hem.
02:20I gazed into Kenzo's eyes, which were so shocked he was speechless.
02:23He said with a gentle smile.
02:25It's okay, I can't run either.
02:27Surely this child
02:28Someone who understands my feelings
02:30You must want friends.
02:32Silence fell over the store.
02:34From Kenzo's perspective
02:35A single tear rolled down my cheek.
02:37I agree
02:37That child
02:38It seems like it has found the happiest owner in the world.
02:41The boy picked up the puppy as if it were very important to him.
02:44As if to confirm that small warmth
02:46He hugged me tightly.
02:47And the two with leg problems
02:49In the twilight
02:50Matching each other's stride
02:52I walked home slowly.
