00:00Gas prices in the EU have gone up again, why is that?

00:08Gas prices have reached a new peak.

00:12In the second half of 2024, they surged to an average of over 12 euros per 100 kilowatts,

00:19the highest price on record and a nearly 12% increase from the same period last year.

00:26It's the first time that gas prices are rising following the 2022 energy crisis

00:33sparked by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

00:38Eurostat says the spike is mostly driven by tax hikes following the rollback of earlier alleviation measures.

00:47Looking across both EU and extra-EU countries, there's a significant disparity in gas prices.

00:53Sweden, for example, faces the highest one, while Georgia, Turkey, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania are paying the least.

01:05None of these countries, except for Croatia and Romania, which boosted domestic gas production, have cut Russian gas supplies.

01:14If adjusted, however, to local purchasing power, figures tell a slightly different story.

01:22Portugal and Italy are paying the highest gas price, followed by Sweden.
