01:40Although I can realize more and more now
01:43That you can have longevity in our industry
01:46If you are prepared to work really hard
01:49And remain honest with your public
01:51It's possible not just for me
01:52But for anybody within the rock and roll world
01:55To last for a long time
01:58But in those days, you know, there had been nobody
02:02Who had been singing for a long time
02:04Only for short periods
02:05You know, people would make one record
02:07Maybe two records
02:08And then the career was finished
02:09So I thought to myself
02:12Maybe I'm good enough to last three, four, five years
02:15But I could never have dreamed of this
02:17So now it's happened
02:18Yes, I'm a little surprised
02:19And I am still very grateful
02:21I must have been maybe 14 years old
02:24When I was with my friends
02:25And we were walking through the village that I lived in
02:28And somebody had stopped the car
02:31They had run into a shop
02:32Maybe to buy a newspaper or something
02:33The engine was still running
02:35The window was down
02:35And I heard the radio
02:38And I heard Elvis singing
02:39Since my baby left me
02:42Well, we all listened and we thought
02:44What is this noise?
02:46It was not like somebody singing normally
02:49It was an unusual sound
02:51And I have to say that that was Elvis
02:53And the moment I heard his voice
02:56Then I was inspired to try to be like him
02:59Every boy who was 14, 15, 16
03:07Way back then
03:09Wanted to be like Elvis
03:10And I was one of them
03:11But I was lucky, you see
03:12I was lucky to find my own career
03:15And my own abilities
03:16And I now, fortunately, I'm Cliff Richard
03:18I'm not Elvis
03:44When I started, it was not so good
03:46It was so easy to make records
03:47Now, you know, I get sent to me
03:49Demonstration tapes
03:51And people make very good demos
03:53There's studios everywhere
03:55You can go in and you can pay some money
03:57And you can make a really, a good tape
03:59But if this is the end
04:01Then I guess I'll carry on
04:06No matter what you've done
04:09How could I believe that we are
04:13History, my love
04:17Even though you give yourself
04:34When I was 16, 17, it was not possible
04:38I only know of maybe two studios in London
04:40And I didn't know how to go there
04:42I didn't know how to start
04:47So all I did was form a band
04:49And we played all the local places
04:51But when I left school, I still had no career
04:54So I had to work somewhere
04:55And my father got me a job in his office
04:57And I worked for one year
04:58And during that year, though
05:00We went to London
05:02And made a little demonstration tape
05:04It only cost five pounds
05:08Maybe that's worth more now
05:09But even then, it was not so much money
05:11And we had three copies
05:13And we took this record
05:14And we gave it to Norrie Paramore
05:16And that was where my good fortune came
05:19Because Norrie wanted very much
05:21To have a rock and roll singer
05:22He didn't have a rock and roll singer
05:25In his productions
05:26So he gave me an audition
05:28And in fact, actually
05:30The audition we gave him
05:32When I left my home
05:34Which was in Chessent
05:35Which was north of London
05:36We had to catch a bus
05:40And the bus went all the way
05:41To Oxford Street
05:43And on the way
05:45On that journey into London
05:47Ian Samuel, who was playing guitar for me then
05:49Started in the back of the bus
05:51To write a song
05:52And that song was Move It
05:53So when we came to Norrie Paramore
05:55He said, you sing something for me
05:58And we plugged the amplifiers into the
06:00Because they were only small amplifiers in those days
06:02And we played and we sang
06:04And we sang and move it
06:05And of course
06:06The very first record I made
06:07Move It was the B-side
06:10Although of course
06:10It became the popular record
06:12And was the A-side eventually
06:15The record company wanted me
06:16To be on this wonderful new television show
06:19So they approached Jack Hood
06:21And played him the record
06:22He turned it over
06:23And he said, well, if Cliff comes on my show
06:26I don't want the A-side
06:27I want the B-side
06:28The rock and roll side
06:30So EMI, of course
06:32They've always been a very shrewd company
06:34They said, well, you know
06:36Television is very important for our new star
06:38So we will change the record
06:40So Jack Hood was very
06:42He was very shrewd
06:43Very clever
06:44And he heard that Move It
06:45Was the better song
06:47So everything turned around
06:48The record company changed everything
06:50All the promotion changed
06:51And Move It became the A-side
06:53Move It here in 1988
06:55Still sounds like a great rock and roll song
06:58It still is
06:59Almost exactly 30 years ago
07:02I came here
07:03I never, ever have heard
07:04At that time
07:05Of Abbey Road Studios
07:06And in fact in those days
07:08It was very difficult to think of
07:10Somebody who lives outside of London
07:12Coming into London
07:13To make a record
07:13To make a record
07:14Seemed impossible
07:15So it was a very special time
07:17And in fact
07:18Abbey Road is right here
07:19There's the building
07:20It looks almost exactly the same
07:22From the outside
07:23As it did 30 years ago
07:24But of course
07:25It has great feelings
07:26And meaning for me
07:27Because it changed my life
07:29And of course
07:29It was 10 years
07:31Before the Beatles
07:32Made Abbey Road very famous
07:33Because Abbey Road now
07:34Is known throughout the world
07:36Because the Beatles
07:37Made an album
07:37And they called it Abbey Road
07:38And the photograph they took
07:40Where they were walking
07:41Across the road
07:42Is right here
07:43So I did all this
07:4510 years before
07:46They made it famous
07:46Abbey Road has played a big part
07:48In many people's careers
07:49But for me
07:50You see that July
07:51Or June or July
07:52In 1958
07:53This is where I stood
07:54I mean I stood around
07:55About this
07:56Within 4 or 5 feet
07:57Of this little area
07:58To sing my song
07:59Move It
08:00And everything seems to be
08:01Exactly the same
08:02The roof looks the same
08:04One thing's for certain
08:05The clock was always there
08:06And this doorway was here
08:08And I believe
08:08Beyond the doorway
08:09Was an echo chamber
08:10Which we may have used
08:11Many times in the past
08:12But it's amazing to think
08:14That this is the studio
08:15That we fought
08:16With the Beatles for
08:16I didn't discover
08:18Till much much later
08:20That when I was speaking
08:21With Paul McCartney once
08:22And he said
08:22You always had Studio 2
08:24And I said
08:25No no
08:25You always had Studio 2
08:27Because when we would ring up
08:28And we'd say
08:28Can we have Studio 2
08:29They would say
08:30Oh the Beatles are in there
08:31And when the Beatles rang
08:32They said
08:33No Cliff and the Shadows
08:33Are in there
08:34So it was a very popular studio
08:36And it's a piece of history now
08:39I can remember the first time
08:41That I saw him
08:42He came into a rehearsal room
08:44We were rehearsing in London
08:47And he came in
08:48I think he came in
08:49With a couple of the shadows
08:50Bruce and Hank
08:54And he was very shy
08:58Very quiet lad
08:59Seemed to be unsure of himself
09:01And he had very long sideburns
09:03Down to here
09:06And I can still see him now
09:09He's not really changed a lot
09:10To be honest with you
09:12For me he's still the same kind of person
09:14He's still quite shy
09:15And a very nice guy
09:17We got on very very well
09:19I cannot claim
09:20To have invented something
09:24Because it was almost an accident
09:26Yeah
09:26Yeah the feel of it
09:28Because we were influenced
09:29By American singers
09:30And American musicians
09:31So we went
09:32But it has been a classic
09:36At that beginning
09:37Yes it has
09:38But it was an accident
09:39Because if you listen
09:40To the second record
09:41High Class Baby
09:42I went home that night
09:44After I made High Class Baby
09:46You know we had this big success
09:48And television
09:50And when I made High Class Baby
09:51I went home and I cried
09:52And I said to my mother and father
09:54I said this
09:55It's the end
09:56You know it became obvious
09:57Very soon after I became
09:59A professional
10:01That the musicianship
10:02Had to become better and better
10:05And we were not good enough
10:06And that's when I went on my first tour
10:09And I had to find some new musicians
10:10And that's when I began to meet
10:12The men who became
10:13The world famous shadows
10:15Remember they weren't
10:16The shadows originally
10:17I can remember
10:18You know I invented the name
10:20By drawing a record
10:22I drew a record
10:23Onto a piece of paper
10:24And the label
10:25And I used to write
10:27Names on it
10:28And I tried writing a name
10:30The planets
10:32And then I looked up
10:33The word planet
10:34In a dictionary
10:35And it said
10:36Cosmic drifter
10:38And I thought drifter
10:39That sounds terrific
10:40In fact cosmic drifter
10:41Is a very nice name for a band
10:42If anybody's listening
10:43And want to start something
10:45So I changed it
10:46And I used to write
10:46I wrote drifters
10:47And I thought
10:48Hey that looks really good
10:49So I invented the name like that
10:50But my
10:51The band originally was me
10:53And I sang and played guitar
10:54It was Ian Samuel
10:56Who played lead guitar
10:58And Terry Smart
11:00Yeah
11:00Who played drums
11:02Oh and there's another friend of mine
11:03From school
11:03Called Norman Mythum
11:04Who also played some rhythm guitar
11:07So that was the original drifters
11:08And we were the ones
11:10Who made the acetate
11:11At the HMV store
11:12The man who was
11:13My manager at the time
11:14Was a man called John Foster
11:16And he went into London
11:17To the very famous place
11:19Called the Two Eyes Coffee Bar
11:20And he listened to somebody
11:23He came home the next day
11:24And he said
11:25I've seen somebody
11:26Who he looks like Buddy Holly
11:28And he plays guitar
11:29Like James Burton
11:30You know
11:31Everybody's heard of Buddy Holly
11:32Of course
11:33And James Burton
11:34Was a very famous guitarist
11:35Because he played for Ricky Nelson
11:37So
11:38He invited Hank
11:40Because this man was Hank Marvin
11:41He invited Hank to come
11:43And join the band
11:44And Hank had a friend with him
11:46And said
11:46Look I would like to bring my friend
11:48He's also a guitarist
11:49So Bruce and Hank
11:50Were the first two members
11:51Who joined me
11:52On the very first tour
11:54Was the beginnings of the band
11:57The Shadows
11:57Because on that tour
11:59We were not top of the bill
12:01The Kale and Twins
12:01Were the number one people
12:03On that show
12:05And the Most Brothers
12:06And playing for them
12:08Was a man called Jet Harris
12:10Jet played bass for them
12:12But he used to listen to my music
12:14And he liked my music better
12:15So sometimes he would come
12:17And say
12:17I'll play for you for free
12:18You know
12:19And he would just jam with us
12:21And when the tour was finished
12:22It was natural for me to invite him
12:25To join the band
12:25So then we have Jet Harris
12:27And Hank Marvin
12:29And Bruce Welsh
12:30And the three of them
12:31Remembered a man called Tony Meehan
12:33The Shadows career
12:34Is very easy to organise now
12:36We make one album
12:38Per year
12:39Or maybe once every 18 months
12:43We do one English tour
12:46Which is about eight weeks
12:48Every autumn
12:49Maybe October, November
12:50And we do one foreign tour
12:52February, March
12:54Which is usually Australia
12:57New Zealand
12:58So the Shadows working together
13:00Takes about six months
13:02Of the year
13:04And I think
13:06If we are all healthy
13:08And we can enjoy
13:09What we're doing
13:11We can just go on
13:12Indefinitely
13:13I don't believe in luck
13:15Except sometimes
13:16When you look back
13:17You think
13:17Isn't it fantastic
13:18That I met those men
13:19At that time
13:19I needed a van
13:21But I had to go and find them
13:22You know, we had to find them
13:23And you had to work at it
13:25It's not always just luck
13:27But good fortune plays a big part
13:30When you look back at those years
13:31What is it really you remember?
13:34I can never forget
13:35The feelings I had
13:37Remember
13:37You see, sometimes
13:38Although sometimes
13:39You know, there are bands
13:40Today like Ross
13:41Who are very young
13:42You know, 18
13:43I don't know, 18, 19
13:45I was 17 and a half
13:46When I made my first record
13:48I was 18
13:50When it was number two
13:51In the charts
13:52And I was topping the bill
13:53At the age of 18
13:55So I know what Ross feel like
13:58I know how these new bands feel
13:59Because it's very exciting
14:00And I can never forget that feeling
14:03Because at school
14:04It was just an impossible dream
14:06It was impossible for me to think
14:08That I could have a career
14:09Like Elvis
14:10Or like Ricky Nelson
14:11Or anyone
14:12So my memories are very clear
14:14It was very exciting
14:16It was a fantastic time
14:17Of invention
14:19When I met
14:20I met the original Fleetwood Mac
14:23Peter Green
14:24And we were doing Top of the Pops actually
14:26And they had Albatross
14:27Remember the instrumental Albatross
14:29And a wonderful record
14:30And I met them
14:31And they said to me
14:35We began our music
14:37Because we listened to a record
14:39That you made with the shadows
14:41Called Me and My Shadows
14:43And I was so proud
14:44Because Fleetwood Mac
14:46Was a great band
14:47And they were very new
14:48And very popular
14:49And I felt very proud
14:50That my music
14:52In a small way
14:53Inspired somebody else
14:54So those days
14:55Will always be very special
14:57Because we were creating
14:59We didn't know at the time

15:00Now it's easier
15:01I look back
15:02And I think
15:03Yes, of course
15:04What we were doing
15:05The Shadows and I

15:25Fleetwood Mac
15:26I mean 50% British
15:28Elton John

15:31So many people
15:32Rock and roll people
15:33And they were all British people
15:34So
15:35Way back in the early 60s
15:36And the late 50s
15:37What we were doing
15:38Was inventing
15:39A European rock and roll
15:41That would
15:41That would shake
15:42Shake the world
15:43And of course
15:43We also brought
15:44The Beatles too
15:45How did your family react
15:46That's how
15:47We had a very close
15:48Family
15:49Relationships
15:50My mother was very enthusiastic
15:52And encouraged me
15:55All the time
15:56And she said
15:56No you can do it
15:57You know
15:58You look good
15:59You sing good
15:59You can do it
16:00My father would say
16:02Just be careful
16:03Because what are you going to do
16:04If nothing happens
16:05You must be prepared
16:06For failure
16:08So
16:08With the two
16:09The two attitudes
16:10Towards me
16:11And my career
16:13Made me very balanced
16:14I feel
16:14So that I went
16:15After my career
16:16I chased it
16:17I worked really hard
16:18But all the time
16:19I was thinking
16:19Well if it doesn't happen

16:22I must find something else to do

16:24My family's reaction

16:29I have three sisters
16:30And they have

20:13But not for the public

20:15And it meant the rain

20:17They have their umbrellas
20:18Yeah
20:18They've got the umbrellas
20:20I like doing outdoor concerts
20:22Because for the sound
20:23It's fantastic
20:25Yes
20:25Because there's no echo
20:26The music goes past your ears
20:28You hear it
20:29And then it's gone
20:30It doesn't come back again
20:31And spoil the sound
20:31We do less and less outdoor shows
20:34But I think to myself
20:35In a place like this
20:37Even if you're standing
20:38At the back
20:39It's possible to see quite well
20:41So you could do
20:42My kind of show right here
20:43I have to confess here
20:45That when I make a record
20:46I never think about a market
20:47I only think of me
20:49You know
20:50If the hairs on my hand stand up
20:53I think to myself
20:54Oh I must make this record
20:55I must record the song
20:56And so I make the record
20:59For me

21:01All the time
21:02And I release the same records
21:03Everywhere
21:06So I can't understand why
21:07For instance here in Denmark

21:11The biggest market that I have
21:13In the whole world

21:15I mean someone told me

21:17That it's maybe one in four homes

21:21Now that is fantastic

21:27I would have sold
21:27Many many more records in England
21:29I was really surprised
21:30When they said to me

21:32Sleeping and waiting for the ticket
21:34So it's a very nice feeling

21:38It takes a great pressure

21:41It means that

21:45All I have to think about

21:48My first memories of Scandinavia
21:50Were lots of pine trees
21:53And very fresh air

21:57I'm sure there are places in Britain

21:59Where the air smells good

22:01Because I have a cottage
22:02A little home
22:03In the west of our country
22:05In Wales
22:05And if you walk amongst the trees
22:07It's the same sort of smell
22:08But my first visit here
22:10Was almost the first time
22:11I felt this kind of air
22:14So my memories of that
22:16And everyone seemed to be very blonde
22:18Cliff has lasted 30 years

22:20It's a very hard question
22:22For me to answer
22:24I guess part of the reason
22:26Is that the people
22:27Who like what he does
22:29Have grown up with him
22:30He is a superb professional
22:34He has learnt his trade

22:41The simple answer
22:43He has a great talent
22:44He's like a British bus
22:45He's British
22:47He's part of our country
22:50And I think he's well loved
22:53And he has this amazing capacity
22:55To attract younger people
22:59So when he goes on television

23:05All the little kids
23:06All over Britain
23:07They just loved him
23:09He's also got the silly old fogies
23:12Like me
23:1249 year old
23:14Who like him
23:14So he's really got the whole market
23:16You're very rarely
23:17Talks about politics
23:18Is that too private for you
23:20Will
23:20Is it just because you don't want
23:22To talk about it
23:23Well politics is a difficult area
23:24We all have political feelings
23:26Because now
23:27I mean
23:28Politics is a very big part of our lives
23:31I mean politics is why my life is threatened
23:34You know when I was in Scandinavia
23:36In Norway about three years ago
23:37You know
23:38Forgive me any Norwegians watching
23:39But there was a time when I didn't like
23:41The idea of Norway
23:42Because somebody in Norway
23:44Threatened to kill me
23:45And I thought
23:45Here I am
23:46An innocent man
23:47Trying to do my best
23:47To raise money for charity
23:49And to speak about Jesus
23:50And peace and love
23:51And they threatened my life
23:53Why?
23:54Not
23:55Not for any other reason
23:56Other than politics
23:57Became very big
23:58In somebody else's life
24:00And so now I have to think about politics
24:02You know
24:03It is part of my adult responsibility
24:06To think a little bit about
24:08The things that run our lives
24:09And politics is probably the most
24:12Powerful area
24:13In the whole of our lives
24:15So although I don't like to make
24:17Big political statements
24:19I'm happy to make
24:20Socially political statements
24:22I was on a political blacklist
24:24Made up by the anti-apartheid group
24:25Yes
24:26Their head office was in New York
24:28So when I had this problem
24:30In Norway
24:31And people threatened to kill me
24:32I wrote and said
24:34Look I don't understand
24:34Why am I
24:35Why am I on the blacklist?

25:45And I kept thinking to myself

25:48But does it have any value
25:51What do I mean to the world
25:52Nothing
25:54And I became very serious
25:55And I started to talk
25:56To different people
25:56And of course politics
25:57Sex
25:58Religion
25:59And more and more religion
26:00So I began to ask more questions
26:02And I spoke with
26:04Jehovah's Witnesses
26:05I spoke with Jewish people
26:06I then met Christians
26:08And they gave me some
26:10Unbelievable answers
26:11I mean
26:11And they all seemed to be
26:13Rational
26:14Before that I thought
26:15Christians don't think
26:17Christians only have blind faith
26:19But it's not true
26:20We don't
26:21I'm not blind
26:21I know exactly why
26:22I believe
26:24If I think of doing a record
26:25And it has lyrics
26:27That I'm not sure of
26:28I think myself
26:29You know
26:30Could Jesus say this?
26:32Would he accept the message in this?
26:34No
26:35Out it goes
26:36Or in the case of like

26:39When I first was given the song
26:41I loved it
26:41And I thought to myself

26:51It was about the occult
26:54So I changed some of the words

27:03There's a little letter
27:05That I can remember
27:05That I received from a girl
27:06In Australia
27:07And she wrote to me saying

27:16And she listened to the message
27:17And she just felt
27:19She must write to me
27:20And tell me

27:23Into the Satan worshipping
27:25I'm now a Christian
27:26I go to a church
27:27I'm helping people
27:28To study the Bible
27:29And you know
27:30For me
27:30Devil Woman therefore
27:32Was recorded just for that girl
27:33What I have done recently
27:35In the last say 10 years
27:36Is that I put one month aside
27:37In the year
27:39And you spend about
27:39Maybe a week
27:40Or a week and a half
27:41To rehearse
27:41And then the rest of the month
27:43We go and make a tour
27:44And then all the money
27:45Is for charity
27:46And that way I feel
27:47I've given not only
27:49My gifts
27:50But also my time
27:52Which is where

27:54Time in our business
27:54Is very valuable
27:56So it's like
27:58I give a 12th of my
27:59My time every year
28:01To this kind of work
28:02So I feel good about that
