00:02Since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell
00:07We stand at the end of Lonely Street and I wake up there, baby
00:13You've been so lonely, baby, you've been so lonely
00:18You've been so lonely, you could die
00:23Well, the bellhops just keep flowing, the desk clerk's resting black
00:28You've been so lonely, that lonely street and I'll never, ever go back
00:33You've been so lonely, baby, you've been so lonely
00:39You've been so lonely, you could die
01:04Now if your baby leaves you, you've got to tell her
01:09Take a walk down Lonely Street to Heartbreak Hotel
01:14Well, you've been so lonely, baby, you've been so lonely
01:20You've been so lonely, you've been so lonely, you could die
01:52Come on, pretty baby
01:54Let's move it and I'll move it now
01:59Shake, baby, shake, but honey, please don't move
02:05This rhythm that gets into your heart and soul
02:11Well, let me tell you, people, it's called rock and roll
02:18Say it's for a dime, but honey, please don't space it
02:24They just don't know what's up for when to replace it
02:28Well, balance and calypso, hell or nothing, no
02:34Real country music that just rides along
02:40Yeah, honey, move it
02:43Yeah
02:43Yeah
02:44Yeah
02:51Yeah
03:12Come on, baby, baby, let's move it and move it down
03:19Dance, honey, dance, baby, please don't lose it
03:25It's all over town, there's a brand new beach
03:32And it's haight in the air like a Mississippi heat
03:39Fireflies in the night, a full frostbore gas
03:45Here comes the train, oh yeah, she's smokin'
03:52Headed out from New Orleans, clear to LA
03:54You better get ready, it's a brand new day
04:01Party movement, fight
04:04Well, ballads, acalyptals, have what nothing's known
04:07Real country music that just drives along
04:13Hot, I'm moving it
04:36Thank you very much, thank you.
04:39I did this show originally at the Albert Hall,
04:42and for the castle section, I did change some of the songs,
04:46but some of you were there, and you're here,
04:50which means you're crazy or rich, or both, I suppose.
04:56Anyway, what I tried to do was to give a potted view of pop rock music.
05:03Obviously, it's seen through my eyes, the kind of influences that hit the shadows,
05:07and I mean, I've often said we were so lucky to start when we did,
05:11because we heard the best of the rock and roll singers,
05:13and of course, they all came from America.
05:15America was the fatherland, is the fatherland of rock and roll,
05:18and I listened to Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis and Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly,
05:23Little Richard.
05:24It was just a wonderful, wonderful time,
05:26and I've often said, you know, that had there been no Elvis,
05:31there would have been no Cliff.
05:35It's just, it, it, it, no, they wouldn't.
05:43Oh, no, they wouldn't.
05:47Yeah, you're right.
05:49And pantomime still isn't here yet.
05:52Anyway, um, rock and roll has always been exciting music,
05:56and what gets my attention is that very often,
05:59right the way through the history of, what, 55 years of rock and roll now,
06:02you'll often find car songs.
06:05And I think the best rock and roll car song ever was Chuck Berry's
06:09No Particular Place to Go.
06:17Riding along in my automobile
06:20My baby beside me at the wheel
06:23I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile
06:28My curiosity driving me wild
06:32Cruising and playing the radio
06:36With no particular place to go
06:40Riding along in my automobile
06:44I was anxious to tell her the way I feel
06:48I told her softly and sincere
06:51She leaned and whispered in my ear
06:56Cuddling more, driving slow
06:59With no particular place to go
07:03No particular place to go
07:07No particular place to go
07:10No particular place to go
07:38No particular place to go
07:42So we parked way out on the Kokomo
07:46The night was young and the moon was gone
07:50We both decided to take a stroll
07:54Can you imagine the way I felt
07:57I couldn't unfasten the safety belt
08:02Riding along in my calaboose
08:05To try and get her belt
08:07To try and get her belt to loose
08:09All the way home I bore her crutch
08:13The safety belt it wouldn't push
08:17Cruising and playing the radio
08:21With no particular place to go
08:24No particular place to go
08:28No particular place to go
08:31No particular place to go
08:59Me and my baby
09:01Every time it's slow
09:02I'm bruising and playing the radio
09:06No particular place to go
09:09No particular place to go
09:38Who's that walking down the street
09:41Looking up those dainty little feet
09:44Who's the one that catches my eye
09:48Every time she passes by
09:53Gee whiz it's you
09:57Ever since we've said goodbye
10:00All because of a little white lie
10:03Let me tell you why we parted
10:06Let me tell you what my heart said
10:10Gee whiz it's you
10:13You're the one that makes me blue
10:15Gee whiz it's you
10:19You're the one who can be true
10:22Little darling won't you hear my plea
10:24Won't you please come back to me
10:28We can pick up where we started
10:31Listen now to what my heart said
10:36Gee whiz it's you
10:53Gee whiz it's you
10:56You're the one that makes me blue
10:58Gee whiz it's you
11:02You're the one who can't be true
11:05Little darling won't you hear my plea
11:08Won't you please come back to me
11:11We can pick up where we started
11:14Listen now to what my heart said
11:19Gee whiz it's you
11:22Gee whiz it's you
11:25Gee whiz it's you
11:27Gee whiz it's you
11:29Gee whiz it's you
11:30Gee whiz it's you
11:36Gee whiz it's you
11:39Gee whiz it's you
11:42Gee whiz it's you
11:42Gee whiz it's you
11:45Gee whiz it's you
11:45Gee whiz it's you
11:45Gee whiz it's you
11:46Gee whiz it's you
11:46Gee whiz it's you
11:51Gee whiz it's you
11:55Gee whiz it's you
12:00I'll be loving you
12:05Always
12:09With the love that's true
12:14Always
12:17And when the things you plan
12:21Need a helping hand
12:26Well, I will understand
12:33Always, always
12:36Things may not be fair
12:41Always
12:44Just call and I'll be there
12:51Always
12:53Not for just an hour
12:57And not for just a day
13:01And not for just a year
13:06But always
13:10But always
13:17Oh, oh, always
13:25Oh, oh, always
13:29And when the things you plan
13:32Need a helping hand
13:37Well, I will understand
13:44Always, always
13:47Things may not be fair
13:52Always
13:55Just call and I'll be there
14:01Always
14:03Always
14:04Not for just an hour
14:08And not for just a day
14:13And not for just a year
14:17But always
14:22But always
14:27Always
14:33Always
14:34Always
14:34Always
14:38And not for just a day
14:38Thank you very much
14:51I'm so aware of those of you who are at the back there
14:53But we can see you, you know
14:54We can see you
14:56Anyway, um
14:59No one
15:00Was more surprised really
15:01And pleasantly surprised at that
15:03To find that I had a career in this industry
15:07Because when Elvis got going
15:09Thousands of us
15:10Fantasized about being like him
15:12And a few of us
15:14Struck it lucky
15:14And we made it
15:15But of course
15:16We wanted to be Elvis
15:17And very quickly I learned that no one
15:19No one was going to ever be another Elvis
15:21There is only one
15:22And we had to find our own way of doing things
15:24I find myself not only thrilled about having a musical career
15:28But then suddenly I found within a year or two
15:31That I was making movies
15:32You know, I had a movie career
15:33I was
15:34I could not
15:35Well, when you think that only two years before that
15:38I was still at school
15:39I was absolutely shaken
15:41And when they released, for instance, the young ones
15:46It became the box office attraction of that particular year
15:52And when Summer Holiday came out a couple of years later
15:54That that became the box office attraction of that year
15:57And I mention this because
15:59Again, I'm surprised
16:00Because Sean Connery had already started making
16:03The James Bond movies
16:05Sean Connery
16:09Which goes to show what a crazy, strange industry we're in
16:13You just have things happen to you
16:15And you just grab them and feel grateful
16:17Which I did
16:17And what we're going to do here is sing three songs
16:20From a couple of the movies
16:21Beginning with this one
16:22Which is, in fact, the title song from The Young Ones
16:44The Young Ones
16:46The Young Ones
16:54Shouldn't be afraid
16:59To live
17:01For love
17:03While the flame is strong
17:06For we may not be the young ones
17:10Very long
17:14Tomorrow
17:15Tomorrow
17:16Why wait until tomorrow
17:21Because tomorrow
17:24Sometimes never comes
17:28So love me
17:33There's a song to be sung
17:36And the best time
17:38Is to sing it
17:40While we're young
17:44What's in every lifetime
17:47Comes along like this
17:50Oh, I need you
17:53You need me
17:55Oh, my darling
17:57Can't you see
17:59That your dreams
18:01Should be dreams together
18:06And young ones
18:08And young ones
18:10Shouldn't be afraid
18:13And someday
18:17When the years have flown
18:20Dawned and we'll
18:22Teach the young ones
18:24Of our own
18:41All together now
18:43Once in every lifetime
18:47Comes in love like this
18:49Oh, I need you
18:52Oh, I need you
18:53You need me
18:54Oh, my darling
18:56That your dreams
19:00Should be dreams together
19:04And your heart
19:07Shouldn't be afraid
19:12And someday
19:16When the years have flown
19:19Dawned and we'll
19:21Teach the young ones
19:23Of our own
19:25Come and see
19:40You need me
20:02We're all going on a summer holiday, no more working for a week or two.
20:10Fine, and after all, a summer holiday, no more worries for me, only for a week or two.
20:21We're going where the sun shines brightly, we're going where the sea is blue.
20:28We see it in the movies, let's see if it's true.
20:36Everybody has a summer holiday, doing things they always wanted to.
20:43So we're going on a summer holiday, to make our dreams come true, for me and you.
21:13We're going where the sun shines brightly, we're going where the sea is blue.
21:20We see it in the movies, now let's see if it's true.
21:29Everybody has a summer holiday, doing things they always wanted to.
21:36Somewhere going on a summer holiday, to make our dreams come true, for me and you.
21:48Following for two, it's still so true, for me and you.
22:20When I was young, my father said, son, I've got something to say.
22:27And what he told me, I'll never forget until my dying day.
22:34He said, son, you are a bachelor boy and that's the way to stay.
22:42Son, you'll be a bachelor boy until your dying day.
22:51When I was 16, I fell in love with a girl as sweet as can be.
22:59But I remember just in time, when my daddy said to me, he said, son, you are a bachelor boy
23:10and that's the way to stay.
23:14He said, son, you'll be a bachelor boy until your dying day.
23:37He said, son, you are a bachelor boy and that's the way to stay.
23:45Son, you'll be a bachelor boy until your dying day.
23:55As time goes by, I probably will meet a girl and fall in love.
24:02Then I'll get married, have a wife and a child and they'll be my turtle dog.
24:10But until then, I'll be a bachelor boy and that's the way to stay.
24:17Happy to be a bachelor boy until my dying day.
24:24Come on now.
24:27Happy to be a bachelor boy and that's the way to stay.
24:31Happy to be a bachelor boy and that's the way to stay.
24:46Happy to be a bachelor boy until my dying day.
24:54Happy to be a bachelor boy and that's the way I found you.
24:59Happy to be a bachelor boy and that's the way I found you...
25:11Thank you very much.
25:16Well, the influences from those days were tremendous.
25:19In those early days, I used to write songs with the shadows
25:22and slowly I kind of faded out because I got more interested in being the front man
25:28and I used to do all the press conferences
25:29and when I got back to the hotel they'd written a whole album.
25:32But anyway, I benefited from their talent as writers.
25:35But I did write with them.
25:36I wrote with Hank, for instance, this next song.
25:38Now I have to admit once again that the influences were mighty in those days.
25:43We listened to everybody and we listened to everything and we stole the lot.
25:47But there hasn't been a writ, so I think maybe we got away with it.
25:50The song that Hank and I wrote is this one, it's called Without You.
26:03You don't want to go to a movie show
26:06Or go on a kiss and a spree
26:09I don't want to go out dancing
26:12If you're not there with me
26:14I won't go
26:18Without you
26:21I want you with me everywhere
26:24Cause you are just my kind
26:27Don't want to go romancing new fire
26:31I gotta leave you behind
26:33I won't go
26:36I won't go
26:37Without you
26:40If you hear any stories
26:42Believe the words they say
26:46Cause I've been telling everybody
26:48Everybody
26:49That you'd be my son
26:51Everybody
26:52That you'd be my son
26:53I don't want to go
26:54To a movie show
26:55I don't want to kiss and spree
26:58I don't want to go out dancing
27:01If you're not there with me
27:04If you're not there with me
27:05I won't go
27:06Without you
27:09Without you
27:11Without you
27:29If you hear any stories
27:32Believe the words they say
27:35Cause I've been telling everybody
27:39You will be my son
27:41I don't wanna go to a movie show
27:45Or go on a kissing screen
27:48I don't wanna go out dancing
27:51If you're not there with me
27:53I won't go without you
27:58I won't go without you
28:04I won't go without you
28:35What the heck, I have two
28:36I thought I'd try the other one
28:40But I don't know why I forgot this next song
28:42I'll tell you about it in a moment
28:44Thank you
28:49Who says you can't get the stuff
28:52But it is interesting that I had not sung this song ever on stage
28:56Until just a few months ago at the Albert Hall
28:59And I'd released it on an album
29:00I think in the late 60s
29:03And how could I ignore it?
29:05I don't know
29:06For those of you who may be hearing it for the first time
29:09Obviously I hope very much you'll enjoy it
29:10If you've heard it before
29:14You're gonna hear it again
29:16It's called
29:18Baby, I could be so good at loving you
29:36Wanted to tell you
29:39How I felt
29:41How I felt
29:42Fustled on
29:43Scared to try
29:44Cause it might turn out wrong
29:49Wish I could tell you
29:52Take my time
29:54Simplify
29:55Let you know
29:57What I've kept to myself
30:00Deep inside
30:02Wanted to talk to you
30:06Baby, I could be so good at loving you
30:13Baby, I could learn to love you a lot
30:19Baby, I could be so good at loving you
30:26If you let me
30:29We'll never stop
30:32Hope that you feel like I do
30:37Want me to
30:39Loving you means oh so much to me
30:45Wait for the moment
30:48Every day
30:50Hope and pray
30:52That today
30:53Might be the one
30:56When I
30:57Tell you
30:58Tell you
31:00I love you
31:02Baby, I could be so good at loving you
31:09Baby, I could learn to love you a lot
31:16Baby, I could be so good at loving you
31:44Baby, I could be so good at loving you
31:51Baby, I could learn to love you a lot
31:58Baby, I could learn to love you a lot
32:00Baby, I could be so good at loving you
32:04If you let me
32:07We'll never stop
32:10We'll never stop loving you
32:27Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:32Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:32Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:33Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:33Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:33Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:34Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:37Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:37Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:38Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:39Baby, I could be so good at loving you a lot
32:53You tell me that you love me, baby
32:56Then you say you don't
32:59You tell me that you're gonna come on over
33:03And then you say you won't
33:06You love me like everybody
33:09And then you start to freeze
33:12I give it to you straight right now
33:16Please don't tease
33:19You come right out and tell me
33:23You're out with somebody new
33:25You play it all so dark on me
33:29I don't know what to do
33:32You never seem to answer me
33:36You just don't hear my please
33:39I give it to you one more time
33:43Please don't tease, oh please don't tease me
34:15You know it hurts so much
34:18You're not to freeze
34:20I give it to you straight right now
34:23Please don't tease, oh please don't tease me
34:56You know it hurts so much, come on, squeeze me
35:01You know I need your tender touch
35:06But you tell me that you love me, baby
35:10Then you say you don't
35:12You tell me that you're gonna come on over
35:16And then you say you won't
35:19Love me like a hurricane
35:23Then you start to freeze
35:26I give it to you one more time
35:30Please don't tease
35:58I can think of nothing but I don't
36:02And dance in on the beach
36:05See a girl, you can go and get her
36:08Your troubles will be out of reach
36:10On the beach
36:12You can dance to a rock and roll
36:14On the beach
36:15Hear the boss of Nova play with
36:17On the beach
36:18You can dance, twist and shout
36:20On the beach
36:21Everybody hear me, come on out on the beach
36:24Come on everybody, stop on the beach
36:26On the beach
36:27You can dance with anyone you need
36:29Because your troubles will be out of reach
36:32On the beach
36:37Ooh, this is fun
36:43Ooh, won't you tell me I'm the one you're gonna dance with
36:51Yeah, bossa Nova
37:07Ooh, this is fun
37:13Ooh, well I know I'm the one you're gonna dance with
37:22Yeah, twist and shout now
37:37You can do the dance that you want to
37:40With anybody that you meet
37:43And if the boss of Nova doesn't get you
37:47The twist will have you on your feet
37:49On the beach
37:50You can dance to a rock and roll
37:52On the beach
37:54Hear the boss of Nova play with
37:55On the beach
37:57You can dance, you can twist and shout
37:59On the beach
38:00Everybody hear me, come on out on the beach
38:03Come on everybody, stop on the beach
38:05On the beach
38:06You can dance with anyone you need
38:08Cause your troubles will be out of reach
38:10On the beach
38:31Thank you
38:36You know, I'm gonna keep on saying about influences
38:39Because they're always so important to all of us
38:42We're all influenced by somebody, something, some place
38:45And it wasn't just the singers or just the songs
38:47It was sometimes the type of pop rock music that it was
38:50Now, some stuff I heard on the radio
38:53Way back in the mid-50s I guess
38:56Was stuff that in America was known as doo-wop music
38:59It was mostly big city, street corner type music
39:02And I heard it because
39:05AFN
39:05Radio network in
39:08In Germany
39:08It was the American Forces network
39:10And they beamed across from Germany to here
39:12And my friends and I heard this stuff
39:14So
39:15We hope that you'll
39:17Indulge us
39:17This is some doo-wop stuff
39:35It's not the way you smile
39:37And I touch my heart
39:43It's not the way you kiss
39:46That tears me apart
39:52Doesn't matter what they say
39:54I'm gonna love you
39:57In your way
39:59What can I do
40:00When it's true
40:04I can't hold myself
40:08Cause baby
40:10It's you
40:14You should hear
40:17What they say
40:19About you
40:20Cheat
40:22Cheat
40:22They say
40:25They say
40:26You never, ever
40:27Ever been true
40:32Many, many nights go by
40:35I sit alone
40:38In a hole
40:39And I cry
40:39Over you
40:41What can I do
40:48Cause baby
40:51It's you
40:52Baby
40:54Baby
40:54It's you
40:56Baby
40:57It's you
40:58Baby
41:02It's you
41:03You can dance
41:04You can dance
41:05Every dance
41:06But the guy
41:07Who gave you
41:08The eye
41:09Let him hold you tight
41:11You can dance
41:11You can dance
41:13You can dance
41:13And you can smile
41:14You can smile
41:15Every smile
41:16For the man
41:17Who held your hand
41:18In the pale moonlight
41:20You can dance
41:21But don't forget
41:23Who's taking you home
41:25And in whose arms
41:27You're gonna be
41:29Oh, oh, oh, darling
41:31Save the last dance
41:34For me
41:37Baby
41:37Don't you know
41:38I love you so
41:40Can't you feel it
41:42When we didn't touch
41:44I will never, ever
41:46Let you go
41:47Oh, I love you
41:49For someone
42:08Oh, darling
42:11Oh, darling
42:14Oh, darling
42:17Oh, daughter
42:23Don't you know
42:23Oh,ya
42:23I had a girl
42:26Don't you know
42:27Don't you know
42:27What's the name?
42:30Yeah
42:31Since you love me
42:32Well, I've never been the same
42:35How I love with my good
42:39Oh, oh, honey
42:41Doris
42:43Where can you be?
42:46Oh, it's me
42:50Oh, Donna, now that you're gone, I don't know what to do, all my love and all my kisses were
43:12for you.
43:32Oh, Donna, now that you're gone, I don't know what to do, all my love and all my kisses are
43:41for you.
43:42Way down tight, from within the dim light cast, two silhouettes on the shade, oh, what a lovely couple they
43:56made.
43:56Put his arms around your waist, held you tight, kisses I could almost taste.
44:07In the night, wondered why I'm not the guy, whose silhouettes on the shade, I couldn't hide, the tears in
44:20my eyes.
44:35Lost control, rang your bell, I was sore.
44:41Let me in, or else I'll beat, down your door.
44:48Saw two strangers who had been, two silhouettes on the shade.
44:53My heart skipped to me, I was on the wrong street.
45:05I rushed down to your house with wings on my feet.
45:12Loved you like I'd love you, my sweet, bound that you and I would be, two silhouettes on the shade.
45:25All of all these, two silhouettes on the shade.
45:30Two silhouettes on the shade.
45:36One silhouettes, silhouettes, silhouettes, silhouettes on the shade.
45:44Two silhouettes on the shade.
45:47Four silhouettes, silhouettes, silhouettes, silhouettes on the shade.
46:03Thank you, thank you very much.
46:06I'm convinced that the first protest song I ever heard, and first one I sang, one of the same song.
46:13It was written by the shadows for one of our movies.
46:15and it's a simple thing, it wasn't at all a sophisticated song at all
46:19but you know, when you all go through, we've all been through this sort of mid to late teens
46:24where you want to, you know, rebel, mommy says no
