00:35I came to Portugal for the first time in 1961.
00:39In fact, it was the delicious Muriel Young who introduced us all to the place.
00:43And my manager then, Peter Gormley, the late Peter Gormley,
00:45came over and loved it so much that he bought six houses,
00:49three semi-detached homes all in a row,
00:50one for himself, one for Bruce Wash of the Shadows,
00:53one for Frank Ifield, two for Leslie Gray and one for me.
00:57And I came in and had a look at it and fell in love with the place.
01:00And, of course, it was very different.
01:02Albuferra was just a tiny little fishing village
01:05and there was one nightclub there,
01:08a lot of fishermen's warehouses and stuff like that,
01:11where, in fact, finally I used to get invited to sing down there at lunchtime.
01:15And so the connection's been back a long, long time.
01:18But I've had three homes here, one in Albuferra,
01:21one just outside west of Albuferra,
01:23and then this fantastic place that I found 11 years ago,
01:27which is a farm.
01:32It's not the way you kiss that tears me apart.
01:38Well, it goes back quite a way.
01:39In fact, the main section of the house,
01:41which is what really attracted me to it,
01:43when I kind of looked at the side of the house from the tennis court,
01:46it looked to me like I was buying a small, disused street
01:49with a couple of houses.
01:51It just looked so quaint, and I loved it.
01:53The section here on my left is actually a piece of the house
01:56that was built probably about 55, 50-odd years ago
02:00by the previous owners, and they actually put the pool in.
02:04But the main part of the house is actually, they say, 300 years.
02:08So 250, at least a 250-year-old farmhouse.
02:11And what looks like the street way is where they would dry all the figs
02:15and place all the almonds and olives and things as they harvested them.
02:33Well, this is a farm, and when I first bought the place,
02:36I wanted it to be a working farm.
02:38Now, I also inherited a farmer, so I said to him,
02:40what can we grow and what can we sell?
02:41I mean, just to turn it over, maybe pay the odd electricity bill.
02:44He said, well, just in that corner there were a small pile of grapes,
02:49the old Chardonnay grapes. He said, I cannot sell the grapes.
02:52He said, but I could sell figs to Spain,
02:54I could sell figs to the north of Portugal.
02:56So I said, okay.
02:57And I had just bought this land way over there on the side
02:59just to stop anybody building against me.
03:01And so we planted about six acres of figs.
03:04And just in the third year of growth,
03:06they were presenting us with a wonderful bunch of figs.
03:08That's the year I talked with the winemaker,
03:10and he said, they've got to go.
03:12I said, can't we interplant?
03:13He said, no, you've got a choice, syrup of figs or a nice red wine.
03:17The choice was so difficult.
03:20Anyway, I got down to brass tacks and planted the vineyard,
03:23and that was about seven years ago.
03:25And it's, apart from anything, aesthetically it looks so pleasing.
03:28I love sitting on this terrace,
03:29whether you're having a cup of tea or a glass of wine,
03:33particularly if it's wine from the vineyard.
03:34There's something rather wonderful about the whole thing,
03:36and I'm so happy that the farm is a working farm.
03:39We have eggs, we have vegetables that grow here,
03:43and we have wine that's produced right from these vines.
03:45And so it's a very pleasurable and easy place to be.
03:48I just love it.
04:16As I get older, I'm aware of these nice things that keep happening to me,
04:19because with longevity comes the fact that, for instance,
04:23having been here at the Algarve for, well, since 1961,
04:27I have become the friend of the Algarve.
04:30Albuferra actually paid me a really big honour by actually naming a street after me.
04:33The very first house I ever bought was right there in Albuferra,
04:37overlooking the big bay,
04:38and the street that my house is on is now called Rua,
04:42so Cliff Richard, and in brackets, Cantor,
04:44which means singer.
04:46And so for the tourist board to present me with this award,
04:50it's again another really nice treat for me.
04:52I mean, what do I do?
04:53I come here, I have a wonderful time,
04:54and okay, if it helps them in their push in tourism,
04:58I mean, I'm really glad about that,
05:00but I didn't have to do much to earn these awards.
05:03But I find it quite, quite heartwarming that they've taken me to their hearts.
05:35Oh, this is fun.
05:41Oh, won't you tell me I'm the one you're gonna dance with?

07:41This wonderful beach that I've known since
07:43oh, four or five years now.
07:46And I hope those of you who are from somewhere else
07:49I have a wonderful holiday.

07:54I also having a great time.
07:58I don't speak Portuguese. I speak Portuguese very badly.
08:05But this night, it's not to speak.
08:11This night, it's to sing.
08:18My Portuguese is really bad, so I'm hoping very much that what I said then was,
08:23tonight is not for talking, it's for singing.
08:29I'm gonna do a lot of different material that hopefully will bring back really good memories for people,
08:35and they bring back great memories for me, of course.
08:39And this one, of course, is Living Doll.

11:22When I first arrived on the Albuferro beach for the concert
11:25At first of all I thought, my goodness me, there's not really that many people here
11:28And I thought, oh they told me they were expecting a whole load of people
11:31And it was a free concert
11:33And I will say this for the camera I'm in Nisapal
11:35I had suggested that maybe we put a slight charge on the entrance
11:40And then give it to charity
11:41And they said, no no no this is Albuferro's birthday
11:44But we want to give the people a gift
11:46Whether they be tourists or locals
11:47We want them to, you don't pay for a gift
11:49And I thought that was really nice
11:51So anyway I got there and I thought, oh the beach is kind of half full
11:54I suppose that's okay
11:55And it's amazing how, you know, you become kind of blasé
11:59And you expect huge crowds everywhere
12:01So I went inside and there was a beautiful little marquee behind
12:03And about 45 minutes or an hour later
12:07About an hour before I was on
12:08I came back out
12:10And I couldn't believe my eyes
12:12Obviously everybody had been at dinner
12:14Having their early dinners
12:15And then they flocked onto the beach
12:17And from my vantage point of the stage
12:19I mean, way to my left
12:22Way to my right
12:23Right down to the sea edge
12:25And I believe that when the tide came in
12:27People were standing in the water
12:28And I could see people standing up above us as well
12:31Under street levels
12:32And up out of restaurant windows
12:33And so I was very, I was thrilled with the whole thing
12:35It was an unbelievable view from our vantage point
12:54I haven't performed a great deal in Portugal
12:56I did do a couple of concerts up north in Lisbon
13:00One of them was a gospel concert
13:02But I've never done anything in the Algarve
13:05Which has been fine for me
13:06Because it's always been my holiday place
13:08It's always the place that I've come to get away from all of that
13:12And so I've never ever sung here
13:13So it was very strange for me to arrive this trip
13:15And see these great billboards everywhere
13:18Saying that I was going to sing
13:20And I thought, there's something wrong
13:21So I was very honored when they asked me as an alien
13:26The 500th anniversary
13:27You know, the first charter was 500 years old
13:31I'm sure the reason why they did it was because over the years
13:34I've made no bones about it
13:35I've always enjoyed being in the Algarve
13:37I think it's a fantastic place to holiday
13:38I love owning a home here
13:40And of course I have a winery now
13:42With even bigger interest
13:45But it's always been a place I was happy to speak of
13:47I knew that if people came
13:49They were going to get sunlight
13:50The best beaches
13:51Probably the best coastline
13:54It's just beautiful
13:55So I've been able to talk about it
13:56When I've done interviews and things
13:57Without feeling that
13:59Oh, when people go
14:00They're going to feel let down
14:00They're not going to get let down
14:02So I think they asked me
14:03Because I've become
14:04What they call
14:06The friend of the Algarve
14:15No more going on a summer holiday
14:19No more working for a week or two
14:23Fern and after on a summer holiday

16:32About ten years ago
16:33So Cliff came to me and asked me
16:35Whether it would be feasible to grow quality grapes
16:39On his property at Quinta Moinu
16:41He had an existing vineyard
16:42Which was run down and he wanted it replaced
16:45And he said firstly could you plant me a decent looking vineyard
16:49And then on top of that
16:50Would it be possible to make a reasonably serious wine from those grapes
16:55And I did a study of the soil and the climate and the sort of things you do in winemaking
17:00And came to the conclusion that if we planted the right grapes we could make a reasonably serious wine
17:08We finished up with eight hectares of land
17:10And I selected some varieties that I thought would do well down here in this region
17:13So we planted Shiraz
17:16Aragonage which is a Portuguese grape variety
17:19Trincadeira and Movedra
17:21Four grape varieties that I thought would do well in this climate
17:24Which is actually quite hot
17:26So they were planted in I think about 1998
17:29And we made the first wine in 2000
17:33On a small sort of experimental level
17:35And the first sort of commercial wine was made in 2001
17:38Sort of three years after they'd been planted
17:41Originally we didn't have a winery to process the grapes
17:43So I was doing it in another place down the road
17:47Which didn't have the facilities that we wanted
17:48As of last year 2003
17:50The winery that we're having this party in now
17:54Was built and that gave us the facility to make a better quality wine
17:57The vineyards have come on now
17:59They're four or five years old
18:01So they're starting to produce good quality fruit
18:04And the wine is getting better and better
18:06So everybody's pretty happy
18:09We did a rosé last year
18:10Because we thought
18:11Particularly in the Algarve climate
18:13A rosé with Cliff Richard's name on it
18:16Would do very well down here
18:17And the idea was
18:18Last year the vines were only one year old
18:20And so the fruit wasn't probably good enough
18:23To make a serious red wine
18:24So we thought we'd make the rosé
18:25From very young vineyard fruit
18:28And it's come up very well
18:30And it's come up so well
18:31That this year we're going to do twice as much

18:41There are many shops and restaurants
18:43But when I first came here in the early 60s
18:46A lot of those places were part of the fish market
18:48And the warehouses
18:50And many times I was invited to lunch

18:58Not with dinero
19:00But somebody always had a guitar
19:02And the kind of songs I sang
19:04Were like these ones
19:07This is a song that comes from a movie
19:09I was very fortunate to have a movie career
19:14And this is

28:12It's a thrill to eat tomatoes

28:16Have been sensational
28:17But I'm really looking forward
28:18To the extra case
28:18Of red Vida Nova
28:23It always fascinates me
28:25That the grapes seem to grow
28:26At the base of the vine

28:29We've had a wonderful crop
28:31These last few years
28:32In fact my vineyard
28:33Was known by
28:35Viticulturists
28:35That came from up north
28:36And also from Spain
28:37As the little miracle
28:38Because the very first year
28:40These trees were planted
28:41Which was in 97
28:42Was that seven years ago
28:44My winemaker said to me
28:45Please do not be disappointed
28:46There'll be no grapes
28:47Well the first year
28:48We had 17 tons
28:49And it's just escalated
28:51Right the way through
28:52Till now
28:52So that now
28:53It's still only a small vineyard
28:55It's a boutique production
28:56And the most I can ever make
28:58Is 45,000 bottles of red wine
29:00Which sounds a lot
29:01If you're going to drink them yourself
29:03But if you're going to sell them
29:04They just evaporate
29:05And this year actually
29:06We apparently outsold Harry Potter
29:21Basically in keeping with the event tonight
29:24The opening of the winery
29:25The local Algarve Conferia
29:28Which is a wine brotherhood
29:30A wine sort of fraternity
29:32They did a ceremonial opening
29:34Of a bottle of the 2003 Vita Nova Red
29:37Which was done with heated tongs
29:40Which breaks the neck of the bottle
29:42The cork and the neck of the bottle
29:43Break off
29:44And then you
29:45It's a very sort of traditional
29:46Old-fashioned way of opening a bottle of wine
29:47But it's a very nice way
29:48To do a ceremonial event like this
29:52The head of the Conferia
29:54Gave a kind of explanation
29:55And a presentation
29:56Of some of the winemaking
29:58And an actual tasting evaluation
30:00Of the wine if you like
30:01So it was kind of a ceremonial event
30:05Related to the 2003 Vita Nova Red
30:08And the Algarve wine region
30:10As a whole
30:11In keeping with the whole sort of event
30:14Of opening the winery this evening

39:36is because you Portuguese are so clever.
39:40You drink it all here.
39:44So we just hope that our wine will be something that will please the region for tourism.
39:50We also obviously wish and hope that our wine will please your mouths, your palates,
39:56and that you will enjoy drinking it.
39:59That's what it's for.

40:09And it's a great feeling when you are standing in the wine.
40:13It's better drinking it, of course.
40:16But it's a special place.

44:32I was wondering what to do about rehearsals here because obviously it it's I was on holiday I I'm on

44:52might be slow and ponderous for the public and what all I did was take out anything that might
44:54and made it into a

45:35them to just tap through, the drummer just went, and we just sang, and it was quite pleasurable,

45:47All the stuff that we did, my band and I have sung over the years many, many times, so I
45:51felt confident. They are really good musicians. In actual fact, I don't know how many numbers
45:56they were, but we did all of them just once. The one that gave us the biggest trouble was
46:01Happy Birthday in Portuguese, which took us about an hour and a half to rehearse. But it
46:06was worth doing. I think the Portuguese folks, they really appreciated the fact that we attempted
