01:25Kiedy dw贸ch legion贸w collide...
01:27...to rivalry stays locked in our minds forever.
01:33I'm gonna kill you on your whole hand!
01:35Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck!
01:38...this is where we break down the legendary stories
01:41...behind the greatest rivalries of all time.
01:43I'm Mario Lopez, and this is UFC Rivals.
01:49Matt Matiracera, George St-Pierre!
01:54My name is George St-Pierre.
01:57I'm a former two-division UFC champion.
02:00My name is Matt Serra, former UFC Welterweight Champion.
02:05Welterweight Championship is on the line!
02:09Livalries don't necessarily have to be born out of hatred.
02:12Sometimes it's just contrast in styles and backgrounds,
02:15...and I think that's the case here.
02:17We have, in my business, what we like to call the airport test.
02:21You're walking through the airport, and people stop and look at you,
02:24and you just have a look.
02:25You look at them, and like, that's somebody.
02:27And then here's Matt Serra.
02:29Congratulations, Matt! Get the pizza and pasta ready, right?
02:31Damn! Mama Serra, in Long Island.
02:34Fresh water mozzarella.
02:36All right, the homemade doughs. I'll be back up on Sunday night.
02:39He's gonna say what he feels.
02:40He wears his heart on his sleeve. Very working class.
02:43That's the dichotomy that drew me to this.
02:46The odd couple.
02:47And you throw them together, and fireworks.
02:52You cannot rest in the fight game.
02:56You always have to improve.
02:57For the pure reason, because I wanted to be champion.
03:01I wanted to be the best.
03:02And I think that's one of the reasons why I became very successful.
03:06Montreal, Quebec, Canada's own George St-Pierre!
03:12Growing up in Canada, I started training karate at nine years old,
03:17because I was victim of bullying at school.
03:22My father is a black belt himself in karate.
03:24For two years, he teached me, then I started to compete.
03:27My name is George St-Pierre, my karate,
03:29and the next one, my 14th.
03:31So I first started as a self-defense.
03:35Then self-defense became a passion.
03:38And then later on in my life, that's how I earned a living.
03:42I decided to become a professional mixed martial art fighter
03:45after seeing Royce Gracie winning the first UFC tournament.
03:51It really inspired me.
03:53He was smaller, less intimidating than most of his opponents.
03:59I saw him sort of beating up his bully,
04:03which is something, when I was young,
04:06I was pretty much never able to do.
04:09I believe, for that reason,
04:10it's something that really inspired me when I saw it.
04:14George St-Pierre was a phenom out of Canada
04:17and was killing the game.
04:19He is a true martial artist in every sense of the word.
04:23He is the perfect fighting machine.
04:25Oh!
04:27Unbelievably strong.
04:28Unbelievably intelligent.
04:31He's got it!
04:31He's got it!
04:32Locked in!
04:33This should be it!
04:34And it's on paper!
04:35And it's on paper!
04:37One of the greatest welteries to ever step out there in the octagon.
04:40Absolutely.
04:40I mean, he was my inspiration,
04:41especially from kickboxing to MMA.
04:42It is gonna be so hard for anyone to stop this.
04:46He was definitely a stud at that time.
04:48He was obliterating the opposition.
04:51Oh!
04:51Oh!
04:52That kick!
04:52That kick!
04:53Oh, he's hurt!
04:54He's hurt!
04:55He's hurt!
04:55He's hurt!
04:56He's big time hurt!
04:57With the elbows!
04:59And it is on and over!
05:00It's over!
05:01George St-Pierre is the new welterweight champion!
05:06Unbelievable shot!
05:08All the things that make up a martial artist, George St-Pierre is the absolute definition
05:14of it.
05:15Matt Serra, he's got the full martial arts thing with that hint of street to him, too.
05:21From Strong Island, Matt to Terra Serra.
05:25As a kid growing up, my father was a lifelong martial artist.
05:29He showed me some tapes when I was around 17 years old of a family from Brazil called
05:35the Gracies, and that was my introduction into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
05:40I went to a Jiu Jitsu seminar in Waterbury, Connecticut, and it was run by Horian Gracie
05:46and Hoist Gracie.
05:47I fell in love with Jiu Jitsu on that day.
05:51Fast forward, I became the first American black belt.
05:56That's not to be understated.
05:58The first American black belt.
06:00That was a big deal.
06:01And that's what got the UFC's attention.
06:06He was one of the very first Americans that was actually really good at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
06:12So when he fought in the UFC, everybody had their eyes on how well Matt Serra would do.
06:19Oh!
06:20Oh, yeah!
06:21And he is out!
06:22I ran right into a spinning back fist, which I would have seen a mile away now.
06:26But, you know, there's only one way to get experience.
06:31You know, I think that fight helped define him.
06:33He came back and won his next fight.
06:35He's tapping.
06:36There it is!
06:37The submission victory has finally come from Matt Serra!
06:41By 2005, I'm in Atlantic City.
06:44I lose a fight.
06:46One of my worst nights I felt ever.
06:48And then that led to me getting cut from the UFC.
06:52Serra was an old school guy that never really had a good run in the UFC.
06:56Then he was given a second lifeline in the UFC.
06:58He was on season four of the Ultimate Fight.
07:00It was called the comeback season, where he plucked guys that were kind of done in their careers and gave
07:05them a second chance.
07:06We came up with the comeback.
07:08Guys who were still young and in their prime and seeing if these guys that were fan favorites could come
07:13back and make it.
07:16Well, every time we cast a season of the Ultimate Fighter, the first thing that you want are guys that
07:21are actually tough and can actually fight.
07:23And then number two is personality.
07:26And Matt Serra was everything you want in a competition like that.
07:30I don't understand a f***ing word this guy said.
07:33I think you understand everything and I don't think you're enjoying it.
07:36I think you're going to tell all these people when I leave how much you enjoy it.
07:42Matt has a really great personality.
07:44He knows how to draw a crowd and keep a crowd entertained.
07:46Good.
07:47All right.
07:48A lot of people would have quit after they got cut from the UFC.
07:50He just stayed true to himself and he got that calm that just changed his whole life.
07:57This season, there are no team coaches.
07:59Both teams will get the opportunity to train with some of the best mixed martial artists.
08:04But the most important thing is the winners will get a shot at the title.
08:08You win the Ultimate Fighter season four, you get a title shot.
08:12I was thrilled at the chance to go in that Ultimate Fighter season four.
08:18All these guys that are in this competition that are 170 pounds,
08:22interesting enough, we'll end up fighting George St. Pierre for the welterweight title.
08:29Something about the Ultimate Fighter is that GSP was a coach
08:32and this made it all the more added layers to the storyline.
08:37I didn't see Matt as a potential threat.
08:40If I would be a southpaw, I would do it like this.
08:43Yeah.
08:45Matt Serra definitely needed this.
08:46and I think he needed something to like, you know, light a fire.
08:51I'm pent up, man. I want to fight.
08:53Matt Serra's a good dude, but when it's time to go,
08:56he will switch it on at the drop of a dime.
08:59Do you understand that you can punch me in the head?
09:02Dude, he's like a .
09:05The personality of a wet mop just...
09:08Matt Serra is a different guy. You do not want to offend him.
09:11You have to have confidence as a fighter, bro. You don't know about that.
09:13So what? Fighting's not for everybody.
09:16Hey, definitely not for you.
09:18But yet, you have a very good opinion about it and you're an expert about it.
09:21Oh, you can't be an expert by watching something?
09:23Yeah, man. Just sit there and watch, man.
09:25Sit there and watch.
09:26Sit there and watch and talk about the guys that get in there and actually believe.
09:29You're like an expert swimmer who never got in the pool.
09:32All right? Yeah, that's it.
09:34You don't want to word words with Matt. He will chew you up and spit you out. It's a problem.
09:39Part of winning the show is you get an immediate title shot.
09:44I was taking it a fight at a time.
09:47Another unanimous decision.
09:51Matt Serra will move on to the finals.
09:53So I'm in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 4 and I'm fighting Chris Lytle.
09:58I was at the top finale to watch Matt fight Chris Lytle.
10:02This was what was going to lead him to the title fight and to where I felt like he belonged.
10:10And we are underway.
10:12Watching Matt and the Chris Lytle finale was great.
10:15Two guys who were fighting for their careers.
10:17Draw by our three jobs.
10:19Spinning backfist by Serra.
10:21Shoot, man. I had to win this fight by any means necessary.
10:24Well, the winner of my split decision.
10:26And now, the welterweight winner of the Ultimate Finale,
10:32Matt the Terror!
10:36Serra!
10:38GSP-Matt Serra fight was a fight that never really was supposed to happen.
10:42But then Matt Serra won The Ultimate Fighter.
10:45And a title shot.
10:48Some people might have had a problem with that.
10:51Matt Serra, I'm going to fight him. No problem.
10:53Because he's not my friend.
10:55He's somebody that I know, but I don't consider him my big friend.
11:00Cut the line to the title.
11:02I had no problem with it.
11:03You know, I didn't come up with the concept, but shoot.
11:07Here we are.
11:09Again, what made this fight so special and memorable
11:11while we're talking about it to this day is the underdog story.
11:14GSP was heavily favored.
11:16It wasn't a knock on Matt Serra, but most people don't expect the Cinderella story to happen.
11:21Joe Rogan and I, we were talking about the Serra-St. Pierre fight.
11:25We're just saying on paper, you know, this is going to be a tough fight for Matt.
11:28Matt's going to have to do this or that.
11:29I absolutely loved when I'd run into somebody and they know I got the fight coming up with George St.
11:36Pierre, and I'd see the fear in their eyes.
11:39You heard me talking to Dana White. You came back out here and you're like, you guys think I'm going
11:42to get smashed. What's going on?
11:43What I say to you, I'm like, Joe, you think I'm going to get hammered. You and Dana think I'm
11:47going to get hammered in this fight.
11:48We don't think you're going to get hammered. We're just looking at it objectively on paper. It's a very difficult
11:52fight for you.
11:53And Matt Serra is fired up and pissed off, telling everybody he's going to prove that this isn't the matchup
11:59it is on paper, because anything can happen in mixed martial arts.
12:02All right. I got to trade my asshole.
12:06For the first time in UFC history, we have made our way to the Lone Star State and the sold
12:13out Toyota Center in beautiful Houston, Texas.
12:18Matt the Terracera is here tonight because he was the winner on the Ultimate Fighter for the Comeback.
12:25GSP, Matt Serra fight, it didn't seem like these two guys were necessarily at the same level.
12:30Yeah. And that's just the way the world works sometimes, because Matt Serra, no one gave him a chance.
12:35All he had to go out there was bite down on his mouthpiece and swing and give it everything he's
12:39got.
12:39And that is such a refreshing feeling.
12:43George Rush St. Pierre puts his welterweight title on the line.
12:46He does. And, you know, Matt Serra is a very tough guy. He's got his work cut out for him
12:50tonight.
12:50I kind of felt like everybody did, which was he doesn't have a hope in hell.
12:55What I say is that St. Pierre is in the prime of his athleticism. Matt's in the prime of his
13:00mind.
13:01Oh, he just gave me his game plan.
13:05I always had the confidence in Matt as a fighter.
13:09If I had to bet my life on it, I'd have to bet on George St. Pierre.
13:12The deck is stacked against him the whole way.
13:16It's literally like a real life Rocky movie. And Matt's even Italian.
13:27This was the role I was meant to be in.
13:30Matt Serra earned his shot at the title here tonight by virtue of the ultimate fighter for the comeback.
13:36He was awesome on that show.
13:37I felt no fear. It was a him or me mentality.
13:41Matt Serra has been telling us the last few days to get ready for me to shock the world.
13:51Normally, before a fight, I'm obsessed. I'm reviewing every possible scenario in my head.
13:57It hunt me to the point that it's very uncomfortable.
14:03Stay calm, relax.
14:06That's right.
14:07We've got to work.
14:08We've got to work.
14:10When George was the rotating coach on the ultimate fighter, he did work with Matt a lot.
14:14I think he got a little confident. Like, he watched Matt and he was like,
14:17Oh, I'll take this guy.
14:19Who's the champion and who stays champion?
14:21We've got to fight.
14:22Remember, you're a champion and you're going to stay champion.
14:25Time to work, man. Time to work.
14:28The champion, George Rush St. Pierre.
14:32He's got the target on his back. Walking around with that belt.
14:35He's a very, very gifted athlete. He's very disciplined.
14:38He just trains with the best people that he can train with.
14:41He's constantly down at Greg Jackson's champ.
14:44The mood coming out of the locker room before the fight, I remember being pretty confident.
14:48Sky's the limit for this kid. He's almost 25 years old.
14:51It didn't seem like there was a sense of urgency. I mean, he went out there to fight.
14:54I mean, we weren't worried like chewing on our fingernails. I'll put it that way.
14:58Ladies and gentlemen, this is the main event of the evening.
15:08It's time!
15:13So I'm in the octagon and I'm staring across at George and I felt calmly at ease.
15:19And I just felt really prepared. I felt really just in the moment.
15:23Ladies and gentlemen, the challenger met the terror!
15:33Terror!
15:37The champion fighting out of the red corner.
15:40I had a false feeling of security.
15:43My ego and my honor doesn't want me to lose to Nat Serra.
15:48The UFC walking weight champion of the world, George St. Peter!
16:01Yeah!
16:04I remember looking over the octagon and going, you gotta knock this guy out.
16:08And he goes, I'm gonna air this around.
16:12Welterweight championship is on the line.
16:15All right, here we go. Are you ready?
16:17You ready? Let's get it on! Come on!
16:19Will tonight be the defining moment of Matt Serra's career?
16:26Fighters, they believe in themselves. They don't get the script.
16:29They aren't told, hey, listen, the world thinks that you're gonna lose this fight, so play along.
16:33They're like, no, this is my one shot, right?
16:36To achieve greatness, to become the champion of the world.
16:39For the pressure's on!
16:41Matt Serra was known for his grappling prowess, for his jiu-jitsu.
16:47So all my preparation was built towards the strategy of stuffing his takedown and keeping the fight standing up.
16:55If Matt connects, he hits very hard. He has very heavy, heavy hands.
16:59Very compact body style, and he commits. And when he goes, he goes hard.
17:04I perhaps underestimate his striking.
17:09Oh!
17:13The welterweight title is on the line.
17:15Matt Serra, he's gotta get inside of St. Pierre.
17:18GSP went out there thinking like, oh, Matt Serra's gonna try to take me down.
17:22And Matt Serra came out there thinking, the best chance that I have is to go guns blazing.
17:27When you're fighting Matt Serra, you're worried about getting taken down.
17:30But he was getting punched in the body.
17:32And it showed me that he was worried about something else other than getting taken down.
17:36And it was Matt Serra's power.
17:37Nice right hand by Matt Serra. He seems perfectly comfortable in the exchanges here.
17:42He's doing a great job.
17:44As the fight was progressing, and I felt very comfortable on my feet with all the exchanges.
17:49Keep him guessing, George.
17:50Where's that right hand? Where's that right hand?
17:55I landed a shot that hurt him.
17:57And Ray Longo told me when I hurt somebody, take the half a second to line up your next shot.
18:02And that's exactly what I did.
18:04Tag!
18:06At that moment, I lose my equilibrium.
18:09I stubble on my leg.
18:11And I made the worst mistake of my career.
18:14Instead of trying to step back and recover, I got sort of emotional.
18:20Because he tagged me and I wanted to give it back to him right away.
18:24Which was a mistake.
18:26You don't get into a slugfest when you're dizzy.
18:29We haven't got him again!
18:31He's gone!
18:31St. Pierre is buckled!
18:32Sarah is going for the finish!
18:36Sarah buckles St. Pierre!
18:38He's not back!
18:39He's not back!
18:40Sarah is trying to upset St. Pierre!
18:47And then it was about following up, and I just stayed on him where he really couldn't get his wits
18:52about him and his legs underneath him.
18:54And next thing you know...
18:57It is all over!
18:59Unbelievable!
19:00Matt Sarah is the no-wilterweight champion of the world!
19:04That would be incredible!
19:10And he ended up knocking him out in the first round.
19:14People were just floored and shocked.
19:19Matt Sarah has shocked the world!
19:21It was disbelief.
19:23It was disbelief that it had actually come all this way and happened.
19:29So when the ref jumped in and he stopped it, well, they can't restart this. This is done. I did
19:35this thing, you know?
19:36And then it starts to sink in.
19:37That you shocked the world.
19:39That I shocked the world.
19:42If you look at the ending of the fight, George St. Pierre turns over and taps.
19:47I knew that I was done.
19:49So I decided to tap, trying to save myself for another day.
19:53At the time, I took a lot of heat.
19:56Saying that I was a quitter because I tap on strike and you should never tap on strike. You should
20:03go on your shield.
20:06That has to eat at George St. Pierre, knowing in his head that at that moment, he panicked, turned over
20:13and started tapping.
20:16You know, Matt Sarah wasn't supposed to just come out of nowhere and beat him.
20:20And now, the new UFC!
20:26All the hard work come to fruition.
20:28He's the champ of the world.
20:31This is the beautiful thing about sports.
20:33Whether it's WWE or it's UFC, everybody understands the underdog story.
20:40Everybody roots for that underdog.
20:42That's what makes this game so crazy.
20:44Yup. The unexpected.
20:45That's why they fight the fights.
20:47That's right.
20:47I was wondering if you and Dana had some humble pie in the back.
20:50Oh, we got about a ton of it.
20:52I was so happy when Matt proved all those doubters wrong.
20:55Absolutely amazing. I don't think anybody would have expected it.
20:58Matt Sarah, who's not known to be a striker at all, a judicious specialist, comes up with a knockout.
21:03My reaction to the first round knockout, I was ecstatic, excited, happy, emotional.
21:09This is going to be an amazing confidence booster for him.
21:12Could this be the title reign of Matt Sarah from here on out?
21:15It was the right time to reveal that I'm heavy-handed. Thank God.
21:20Things couldn't have worked out any better.
21:23Oh, man.
21:26My whole life instantly switched.
21:31I was on a mission. My focus was to become champion again and show the world that I'm better than
21:35this.
21:36I don't think anyone was more shocked about what happened than GSP himself.
21:42He was dominating me and then against me.
21:44No, no, no, no, no, no.
21:45I was winning because I was...
21:46I was like...
21:47I have to press because I lose.
21:50You're picking you up the pace, man.
21:52Oh, man.
21:53Everybody gets captured.
21:54It's my worst nightmare, man.
21:55You know what?
21:57Immediately when I lost, I was very angry at myself.
22:01It's alright. It's hard to accept that, man.
22:04He had this wave of embarrassment.
22:06Like, he shouldn't have lost to him, not to Matt.
22:08This might be the biggest upset in UFC history.
22:10Let me tell you, it was awesome.
22:13But we knew it.
22:14There was no real upset.
22:15I know.
22:16I knew I could do this thing.
22:18My fianc茅e did.
22:19My coaches did.
22:20That's about it.
22:21How did you enjoy it?
22:22Right on, man.
22:23Right on.
22:23How did you enjoy it?
22:26Yes, you did.
22:30Congratulations.
22:30I was just in the cosmos.
22:32I was just thrilled beyond belief.
22:36Oh, man.
22:39I have to accept it.
22:42Boo, you can't beat me.
22:43I don't know what I'm gonna say.
22:44Boo, he's two more rounds at it.
22:45He's the new fighter.
22:48All that work for nothing.
22:50It's another lesson in your life.
22:53It's another lesson.
22:54Standing up and striking you.
22:57I was warned that Matt, you gotta watch out.
23:01Matt, he hit very hard.
23:02But I kind of disregarded it.
23:05Maybe because of overconfidence.
23:07Man, I hate to lose, man.
23:09First time I got knocked out, man.
23:11First time.
23:13Pissed me off.
23:15I felt I deserved my respect.
23:17I think I fought better guys.
23:19I had issues with him saying anything
23:22other than congratulations.
23:24My worst nightmare.
23:27It's gonna make you stronger.
23:29Oh, yeah, George.
23:30Yeah, I hope I'm gonna have another chance.
23:32It's gonna make you stronger.
23:34Oh, man, it's bad.
23:37Look at this thing, huh?
23:38I think I stole one of the limelight tonight.
23:41With that unexpected win,
23:43I mean, obviously no one benefited more than Matt Serum.
23:45My guy took full advantage.
23:46He started seeing him on TV.
23:48And he's got a great personality.
23:49He started seeing him out there.
23:50And even, I mean, here's a guy who was sort of like
23:52towards the tail end of his career
23:53and just completely rejuvenated.
23:55Matt Serum, everybody.
23:57Matt Serum, who was categorized as a journeyman.
24:01Right?
24:02Yeah.
24:03Going through the UFC on the downside of his career.
24:05Wins the ultimate fighter.
24:07Gets a guaranteed title shot.
24:08Shots the world.
24:09Wins.
24:09Yeah, he's living it up.
24:10Now the best fighter in the world?
24:12Is that the idea?
24:12Well, that's you saying it.
24:14Yeah.
24:14I mean, I just...
24:15Okay, I am.
24:16Yeah.
24:16No, no.
24:19Whirlwind.
24:19But it was exciting.
24:21It was exciting times.
24:24Matt definitely felt on top of the world.
24:26Winning the title, celebrating our wedding.
24:30It was a great year for us.
24:33George St. Pierre, he had to have wanted a rematch right away.
24:37The worst already happened.
24:38You already got knocked out in the biggest upset in history.
24:42You have to go to the gym right away and go, set the rematch.
24:46This time, let's do it in Montreal.
24:49When we head north of the border for the first time in UFC history,
24:52we will find out who will become the undisputed UFC welterweight champion.
25:00After my first fight with Matt Serum, that I was bullied by a lot of people
25:05saying that, you know, I never deserved to be champion in the first place.
25:09I'm not as good as people thought.
25:12And I'm done.
25:16GSP really couldn't get out of his head that Matt Serum fight.
25:19We had a sports therapist help him out with that.
25:22And he was like, hey, let's get a break.
25:23I want you to carry around this break.
25:24I want you to ride his horse's mouth.
25:25Like an actual brick?
25:27Yeah.
25:28And let's put Matt Serum's name on that.
25:29We made him carry it around for weeks.
25:33When you carry a bag with a big brick inside,
25:37it starts to add up days after days.
25:41At one point, I called the sport psychologist.
25:43I was like, hey, I'm ready.
25:45He's like, all right.
25:47So what he did is he made me grab the brick with the name Sarah on it
25:51and throw that brick in the St. Laurent River.
25:57I felt that I let go and I learned how to forgive myself from a mistake that I've done.
26:04It helped me to live in the present moment and to focus on my rematch against Matt Serum.
26:12So I knew I was in George's head.
26:14That actually helped me.
26:15I was like, oh, man, there's a brick somewhere in a lake with my name on it.
26:18I know I'm always strong mentally.
26:20So I felt maybe he might have been a little bit of a head case.
26:23I might have had that go into my favor.
26:29Everyone's fired up for this rematch, of course.
26:31They want to see it go down yet again.
26:35We met at UFC 83, the first event at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada,
26:40and, of course, the hometown of George St. Pierre.
26:43Skill-wise, I'm way, way, way better than I used to be before.
26:46I'm not afraid to go standing up with him,
26:47and I'm not afraid to go underground with him.
26:49I was actually really offended.
26:51Only because nobody gave me a shot to win this thing.
26:54Everybody thought I was, you know, walking to my doom.
26:57And then I pulled it off.
26:58I did it.
26:59I felt I deserved my respect.
27:02To me, you know, he's thinking he beat me easy,
27:04and how do I not get insulted by that?
27:07To me, that's when he crossed the line,
27:08and I just, I retaliated and let him know,
27:10that way, man.
27:11You know, me, you, dude.
27:13You, you know, how dare you?
27:15Leading up to the second fight with myself and George St. Pierre,
27:18it was definitely a little bit more trash talk.
27:20Holy .
27:21You're not even training, are you, French?
27:22You drink your red wine, go to your hockey game,
27:24and shut the up.
27:25He said, go back to your red wine and hockey game,
27:27and he said the F word, Frenchie.
27:31In Quebec, where I'm from, the French-Canadian
27:33are the labor class.
27:36When he said that, it insults a lot of people.
27:39You cross the line first, and then I say something,
27:42and then you're offended by what I say?
27:43Screw you, man.
27:44Don't open your mouth, and we won't have any problems.
27:48If I take the mount position on him,
27:50and I have a chance to land the last elbow and knock him out,
27:53I will do it.
27:59What's going on, Montreal?
28:03Man, it's great to be here in Canada.
28:05Finally, huh?
28:06I don't care so much about the title.
28:08I care about the person.
28:10And for me, I wanted to have my revenge against Matt Serra.
28:14In Montreal, in my hometown.
28:17The former UFC welterweight champion of the world,
28:22George Rush St. Pierre!
28:24It was the loudest crowd I ever heard.
28:28The energy, the buzz, the fans were rabid up there.
28:33And the reigning UFC welterweight champion,
28:37Matt the Terracera!
28:40When he walked out, the Montrealers booed him.
28:43It was deafening.
28:46He was happy to come here and play the villain
28:48and shut everybody up.
28:49I was putting up the two, like I'm gonna shock the world twice.
28:52I knew I'd be playing the heel, and I had no problem with it.
28:56There was more animosity this time.
28:58We knew we were going into a fight.
29:01We were adversaries now.
29:03And don't believe the hype.
29:04Believe what you're gonna see Saturday night.
29:06Can't wait.
29:07We had to win this fight.
29:09The pressure was enormous.
29:10He's coming in our backyard.
29:12It would be too humiliating, too unsufferable
29:14to lose the gold again to the same guy,
29:19and God forbid, by knockout.
29:20We were obsessed with the preparation.
29:23It was the biggest moment of our lives.
29:28Come on, guys.
29:29Let me tell you something.
29:30If you're pissed right now,
29:32wait till after Saturday night, all right?
29:35That's it. I'm gone.
29:38A new UFC attendance record will be set tonight.
29:43Over 21,000 in attendance
29:45inside the Solveld Bell Centre.
29:48Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
29:51Everyone there wanted to see George St. Pierre
29:53be crowned the champion once again,
29:55and the atmosphere was insane.
29:57I am telling you, the noise from that crowd was just wild.
30:02They love George St. Pierre!
30:05And they are ready to celebrate a victory
30:08for the Native Son tonight.
30:11GSB had the best of the best guys in one room,
30:14and he was the first guy there and the last guy to leave.
30:17Didn't talk a whole much.
30:18You can tell he was just fully focused on this fight.
30:23I'm always at my best when there's animosity before the fight
30:28because my ego and my honor doesn't want me to lose
30:33to someone who is insulting me.
30:39It forces me to prepare myself harder
30:43and to train in the fear that my opponent
30:47is more prepared than I am.
30:51I knew going into the second fight
30:53that it was going to be a way harder fight than the first.
30:57I knew he's done his homework,
30:59and I just anticipated a tougher fight all around.
31:05I remember being in the back with him,
31:08holding pads, and the arena was shaking.
31:12New demon movement. New demon movement.
31:15Hands up, chin down. High pressure.
31:17That's it.
31:19Still, to this day, I never heard anything like this.
31:23George St-Pierre is loved all over the world,
31:27but especially here tonight in Montreal.
31:31It was so loud.
31:33The fans were insane that day.
31:36Here he is.
31:37George St-Pierre entering the octagon.
31:40It was insane.
31:42I could feel the energy, the vibration of the crowd.
31:46It was an incredible feeling.
31:48I never felt anything like this ever again.
31:55of all the entourage you want,
31:57they can change the thing.
31:59The first minute or the last minute, he's getting .
32:01Like, we're going vicious.
32:03Standing up, body, chin, on the floor, we're taking a limb.
32:06.
32:08Matt Serra has truly relished this role of villain.
32:13The Canadian crowd was absolutely brutal.
32:17Just chants of .
32:19Sarah.
32:20Loud.
32:21Loud.
32:22I fully expected it.
32:24It's not like I went there and was like,
32:25what, you don't like me?
32:26Nah.
32:28This is the main event of the evening.
32:32When Bruce Buffer was doing the introduction,
32:35I could not even hear him.
32:37I was reading on his lips to know when it's time for me
32:40to raise my arm.
32:44I'm looking across.
32:46George looks like he's carved out of granite.
32:49Enemy territory.
32:51Let's go again.
32:53If Matt's going to fight somebody,
32:55that nice guy goes out the window.
32:57If a guy is in there trying to knock him unconscious
32:59and take something away from him,
33:01I mean, you're going to see a really ugly side of Matt Serra.
33:06He immediately launched himself towards me to hit me.
33:09So I ducked down and I put him down.
33:11A lot of people thought he would stand up with Serra.
33:14He takes him right down and gets the half guard.
33:16I wanted my turn now.
33:19I have a secret card.
33:20To do something that he did not expect.
33:23He's so much stronger than he was earlier in his career.
33:26George St. Pierre is.
33:27That's a scary thought.
33:29From the opening bell, it was a different fight.
33:32George was not afraid of Matt on the floor.
33:37Oh, big ones there.
33:39Postured up for a moment.
33:40Boom, boom.
33:41When I talked about the first fight,
33:43it felt like it was a great day of sparring.
33:45I was seeing things.
33:47I was reading it right.
33:49This is bad for Matt Serra.
33:52Hammer fist from St. Pierre.
33:53The second fight was the exact opposite.
33:56George was on point.
33:57George St. Pierre in a dominant position here in round one.
34:01St. Pierre has to be careful with the knee bar.
34:03Okay, his leg is out.
34:05Matt Serra is going to get back to his guard.
34:06At the time of the Matt Serra match, George had got back that aura.
34:09The sentiment at the time was that George is back, and we're going to bring you here, and you're the
34:14sacrificial lamb.
34:15St. Pierre, relentless in his attack here in the first four minutes.
34:19He's chipping away.
34:20He's chipping away at Matt Serra.
34:23What a great first round by St. Pierre!
34:29St. Pierre, Serra, round two.
34:32The jiu-jitsu of Matt Serra looked good.
34:34I mean, he was able to kind of stay in the fight, but it was very clear that he was
34:39outmatched.
34:41Serra, again, is forced to the mat.
34:45George got me down again.
34:47George fired off an elbow that got my eye socket to the top of my nose, and it did hurt
34:53me.
34:56Knees continuously into the midsection of Serra.
35:01Eve Levine right on top of the action.
35:03Serra turns.
35:04GSP doesn't stop.
35:07St. Pierre now has his back.
35:09Hey!
35:10I got knees!
35:1320 seconds!
35:1420 seconds!
35:16More knees by GSP!
35:19George St. Pierre is the undisputed UFC welterweight champion!
35:29Winning the belt in front of my people was just a dream come true.
35:33It was a ton of relief.
35:34I felt that I needed to give a reason to people to forgive me.
35:39Seeing how the fight ended was upsetting. It really was.
35:46It was, for me, the most memorable victory I had in my career, because I was able to perform in
35:53front of my family, my friends, and for the first time in my hometown in Montreal.
35:59You know, much like I felt when I had my title shot, I wasn't going to be denied.
36:04That night at UFC 83, George St. Pierre wasn't going to be denied.
36:08And he was phenomenal that night. And he bested me.
36:14Canada!
36:15Get back!
36:17What was going on in Canada at the time is unexplainable. You had to be there. It was one of
36:22the greatest moments of my career. The whole building of Canada and the George St. Pierre era.
36:30The man can do it all. High-level jiu-jitsu, excellent wrestling, knockout power, one of the nicest guys. Gotta
36:37respect this man.
36:39We're not going to sleep anytime soon.
36:42One night. One night.
36:44I couldn't wish for a better scenario. Honestly, it's just, it's like a dream.
36:49It's like a weight on my shoulder, but my belly is not empty yet.
36:52It was a lot going through my head at the time. I enjoyed being the champion. Yeah, I was bummed.
37:00It was a different thing himself, and if he would have keep going, I don't know. It would probably be
37:04bad for him, because I was not slowing the pace to just keep pounding on him.
37:08I knew he was finished, and I was going for the kill.
37:14What do you got to do?
37:15How do you think Matt made out at the end of the day after that fight?
37:17Oh, God, you know, when you fight, there's two outcomes. It's the thrill of victory. It's the agony of defeat.
37:26Can I really be smiling on the ?
37:29Yeah, dude. It's a battle.
37:31After my fight with George, that kind of really pushed me in that direction of saying, all right, it's time
37:38to walk away from the game.
37:39I think he did a lot for the sport, whether it be jiu-jitsu, mixed martial arts. He made a
37:46good name for himself.
37:49He'll always be remembered in the UFC for what he's done throughout his entire career, and of course, his rivalry
37:55with George St. Pierre.
37:56Yeah, you can't take anything away from him.
37:57My post-fight career is a beautiful thing. I run my school, Sarah BJJ, which I've been doing my whole
38:03UFC journey.
38:05Shoulders touch and go. Good. Hips up. Excellent.
38:08What are you doing?
38:09I really take pride in helping other guys achieve their dreams. That's just a win-win.
38:16I'm still employed by the UFC. I do the UFC podcast, UFC Unfiltered.
38:21No, Jimmy.
38:22See, I already feel it.
38:22Stop, Jimmy. Look, look, look, look. Now, look, look. I don't have to do it hard, but if I just
38:26bring my weight back this way a little bit, you will go to sleep, Jimmy.
38:29Just so you will.
38:29Jimmy, you're gonna go to sleep.
38:31Jimmy.
38:31It's very effective.
38:32Jimmy, it's so much fun.
38:33It's very effective.
38:34I knew I was interested in him as a person, and I figured we'd get along. If you can't get
38:38along with Matt, Sarah, you're a douche.
38:41This is happily ever after for me. I'm happy.
38:47George! Rush! St. Pierre!
38:50My rivalry with Matt, Sarah taught me lessons that I will never forget and lessons that also changed me to
39:01become a much better fighter.
39:04When George beat Matt, Sarah by TKO in the second round, I didn't know at the time we were gonna
39:08go undefeated for nine years from there.
39:11And still the undefeated...
39:15He beat the who's who, the best of the best of welterweight division.
39:18He is the all-time best in UFC history.
39:22This is something that I loved about this whole rivalry thing with these two because they showed respect inside of
39:28the octagon and outside of the octagon.
39:30And that's really, you know, what it is about. All the rivalries and everything aside, I think no matter what,
39:34when you step in the octagon with someone, you will always have a deep respect for that person.
39:43Hey!
39:44Come on, George!
39:46What's up, man?
39:47Dude, come on. It's so good to see you, buddy.
39:48Hey, good to see you, man. Good to see you.
39:50You look great, bro, as always.
39:52Yeah, you look great, too, man.
39:53I'm so glad I'm in shape when I see you because you're never out of shape.
39:57I think my loss to Matt Serra is probably the biggest upset of all time in mixed martial arts.
40:03And I learned a great lesson, and I learned it the hard way.
40:10Remarkable about that, Matt, is that, and I always admire your career, things have not always been easy for you.
40:16You know, you had some ups and downs. You never gave up.
40:19You know, if I talk to a kid, I want a good example of someone who embodies resilience and never
40:26give up sort of attitude.
40:27You're the perfect example. It's just unbelievable. It's like a Rocky movie.
40:32And I'm the bad guy in the movie, but I mean, I have to admit, it's just unbelievable what you
40:36have accomplished.
40:41Sarah congratulating George Rush St. Pierre, two tremendous champions.
40:47I know it really stunk for me, but I was really kind of happy for you, in a sense.
40:52You did a little bit extra to put some oil on the fire, which riled up people completely insane.
40:58I mean, it was just great. It was a great rivalry.
41:01You know what I mean? It was...
41:02A lot of guys, you cannot put them in the same room.
41:05I heard.
41:05We had our story, our animosity, but it's cool now. We're friends. It's a lot of fun.
41:10You know, I always love to see you. I'm so happy for your success.
41:14Yeah, and I'm happy to call you a friend now. It's so good.
41:17Yeah, give me a hug. Come on, George.
41:20Pure glass.
41:25Time for the trilogy. Do you want to do the bell or you want me to?
41:29Think, think.
41:33GSP wouldn't be the fighter, the man, I think, the competitor.
41:37He was at his greatest point after the fight, if it wasn't for Matt Serra.
41:42He needed that brick. He needed that brick. That's right.
41:45He needed to get rid of that brick. And he needed to get rid of that brick. That's right.
41:47I'm gonna try that by the way.
41:49Yeah.
41:50Thank you.
