00:00From the Department of Correction, the Big Boss Man!
00:06In wrestling's 1980s golden age, the Big Boss Man built his name as a defining villain of the era.
00:12A demon man! You see a man who likes to make people suffer!
00:16He was an evil prison guard that took advantage of the poor inmates.
00:20You know, this is totally uncalled for!
00:22And beat him down with a nightstick.
00:24The Big Boss Man wants to do some torturing here.
00:26And forced him to serve hard time.
00:30The Big Boss Man was an exceptional heel because he was believable.
00:34Some would say he's a cult classic.
00:37Feel the pain, the whole pain, and nothing but the pain!
00:40After reaching massive heights in the 80s, the Boss Man's character took a controversial turn during the fabled Attitude Era.
00:49The Big Boss Man was a great performer in the ring.
00:52But it pisses me off to this day that people remember him for feeding guys dogs and desecrating corpses at
01:00funerals.
01:01Who in the f*** came up with this idea?
01:04And this man is acting!
01:06I got to go to school the next day and explain this to my friends and peers.
01:10The Boss Man's hanging from the south!
01:14But Ray Traylor's hardest battles were with addiction in an industry fueled by painkillers.
01:21Look at the pain on the kisser of the Big Boss Man!
01:25I think that all men, they want to hide that they hurt.
01:30It gets tiring to physically be in pain every day.
01:35It gets hard.
01:37I do wonder if those doctors really knew the can of worms they were opening up.
01:42I've always said that the wrestling business will find your weakness, it will prey upon it, and it will kill
01:50you.
01:51You think your parents are supposed to be perfect.
01:55When it comes to addiction, it was a problem for him.
01:58And he said, look, I'm sorry, I'm just hurting.
02:09Ever since I was a little bitty boy, my mama, my daddy taught me one thing, and that's to respect,
02:15law, order, and justice.
02:17I'm the Big Boss Man, I am the law and order in the World Wrestling Federation.
02:21It's unbelievable that you kept all of this stuff.
02:24It makes me smile, because I haven't looked at it in a long time.
02:33This is Dad in our city hall.
02:36Let me speak to the Big Boss Man for a minute.
02:37Say what you gotta say.
02:38You already got an attitude.
02:39Wait, okay, but it's cool, it's cool.
02:42This is the long arm of the law.
02:44That is very heavy.
02:45It's the real deal.
02:46It's the real deal.
02:53I don't even think I understood his place in wrestling history, just how popular he was.
03:01What an ovation here for the Big Boss Man.
03:04He's under there, not wasting any time.
03:05My name's Lacey Traylor, daughter of Ray Traylor, the Big Boss Man.
03:16Big Boss Man, the character, he had so many great feuds and matches.
03:22The real guy, he was a big sweetheart.
03:25He is a great dad.
03:34Ray Traylor was a girl dad.
03:38My mom used to joke, I'm the boss man's boss.
03:42I was born bossy, I'll die bossy.
03:45I ran a tight ship with my old man.
03:48I can't tell you how many times we had him posted up putting makeup on him.
03:53I always felt loved, and we spent a lot of time laughing.
03:57I'm Clifford Dow.
03:59What's your name?
04:03I love that you saved all this stuff.
04:05You know, because I loved him so much, that was it.
04:08I just loved that man.
04:09And I was always so proud of him, so I just wanted to keep everything, you know?
04:13I am Angela Traylor, and I was married to Ray Traylor, the Big Boss Man.
04:17We went to high school together.
04:19He was a foot taller than everybody in school.
04:21You could see Ray from the other end of the hall, over everybody.
04:24I had this little crush on him, so I had to cut out his picture, and I had it on
04:28my little board.
04:30He was the sweetest thing ever.
04:32He never drank, he never partied.
04:34He took me to my junior prom.
04:36We've been together ever since.
04:40He loved me with everything he had.
04:43But he said he would never marry me until he could take care of me.
04:48He got hired as a correctional officer for Cough County.
04:52So Ray really was a correctional officer?
04:54He really was, he really was.
04:57He was such a big guy.
04:59The prisoners called him boss.
05:02His heart went into it.
05:03Honestly, I think he was just showing up for work.
05:05He was getting paid, but it wasn't a lot of money.
05:07Encouraged by friends and looking to generate extra income, Ray uses his size and strength to enter the wrestling business.
05:15In 1986, Ray joins Jim Crockett Promotions, a rapidly expanding competitor to the WWF.
05:23Tony Blanchard, Ray Traylor.
05:25We paid the money for him to go to training and everything, but he only had time to do like
05:29two trainings.
05:30And the rest of the training he got while he was on the road.
05:33Ray Traylor really had the weight advantage.
05:36I mean, he had never wrestled in his life, and he's, you know, within two weeks, he was on the
05:40road with, you know, wrestling Dusty all over the place.
05:42Dusty Rhodes was the top babyface star, and it's also the book.
05:47He knew talent when he saw it.
05:49I'm Jim Crockett, and at one time, Ray Traylor was my bodyguard.
05:54I've got the indestructible Bubba Rogers, my personal bodyguard.
05:57I was a wimpy mama's boy from a rich family in Louisville, Kentucky, and the fans were beating the shit
06:04out of me.
06:05Get away from me, get up, Dennis Williams, stop away from me.
06:08The idea of having a bodyguard appealed to me legitimately.
06:11And anybody else that wants to lay a finger on me or do me any kind of harm, you're going
06:15to have to go through Bubba Rogers.
06:17Ray said, I worked as a guard at Cobb County.
06:21They taught us to be able to contain people.
06:24I said, well, contain these sumbitches all you want.
06:31Here goes this guy. He comes down. He's in the crowd, right?
06:34He's trying to hit the cornet.
06:36Well, Ray just took his fist and slammed the guy, knocked the teeth out of his head.
06:44I didn't have anybody coming over the rail anymore because they were scared of Bubba.
06:48This was a goddamn badass.
06:51The baddest man in the world, big Bubba Rogers!
06:58Dusty understood that Bubba had to have an aura.
07:02So when Bubba does something, it's like a movie monster.
07:06Leading up to the big confrontation between Dusty Rose and Big Bubba Rogers,
07:11Dusty comes in with a chair.
07:13And Dusty had told Klondike Bill, the ring guy, gimmick the chair, so when I hit him, it breaks.
07:19Dusty Paul bunions this chair right over his head.
07:26The seat blows out.
07:28It doesn't even knock his hat off.
07:30It's one of the most memorable pieces of video that we ever shot.
07:34We go back in the back.
07:36Bill, great job on the chair.
07:38He's like, I forgot.
07:40Dusty just hit him as hard as he could overhead with it.
07:43It broke.
07:44All of a sudden, Big Bubba Rogers is one of the most fearsome guys on the card.
07:49Oh, my goodness.
07:50And nobody can stop him.
07:53Anybody got a stretcher?
07:54We got a Big Bubba Rogers!
07:56He tried to work both jobs for a while, but a lot of the prisoners started recognizing
08:01him from TV that he'd be rowdy when he'd come into work.
08:05And then he was asking for days off because he was trying to keep him from the road.
08:09He wasn't calling in his office.
08:11And he said, Ray, you've got to make a decision.
08:14Are you going to be a correctional officer or are you going to be a wrestler?
08:19He said, I guess I'm a wrestler.
08:20Never look back.
08:23Booked in a dangerous, high-profile match, Ray's career hits a crossroads.
08:30By the end of 1986, Bubba was in our corner when the Midnight Express faced the Road Warriors
08:35in a scaffold match.
08:37To win the match, you must throw both of your opponents off of the scaffold.
08:43But then Dusty wanted the Road Warriors to chase me up to the top of the scaffold and
08:48drop into Big Bubba's clutches.
08:54I'm glad he didn't play center field because he fumbled that catch.
08:59When I landed, it blew the ACL in my right knee.
09:04And then came Starrcade 87.
09:07But this time, they wanted Bubba to go up.
09:10Here he goes!
09:12The big man, 350 pounds!
09:15The people think, yeah, he's going to throw him off.
09:17But as he's closing in on him, Ricky Morton had punched him in the balls and ran away.
09:28After the match was over, we all got $10,000 apiece.
09:32Bubba got five.
09:33He felt disrespected.
09:35Ray, he realized he wasn't making the same as these other guys.
09:38But he was working just as hard and taking just as much abuse.
09:41And at this point, we were living poor when we were talking about moving back to my parents' house.
09:45He said, I'm quitting.
09:47At the same time, word had been getting out about Ray, who is that size and that agile, and he's
09:53already proven to be a draw.
09:55Vince heard about that.
09:59Accepting the invitation, Ray flies to New York to meet with WWF promoter Vince McMahon.
10:05You're some vicious, Vince.
10:06I didn't even sleep.
10:07For anybody unfamiliar with Vince McMahon and his outlook on wrestling, bigger is better.
10:13He liked Hulk Hogan, who looked like a superhero.
10:17And he wanted supervillains to fight him.
10:23When Talonan comes in, their first stop is at the office of Vince McMahon.
10:30Jerry Briscoe here.
10:31I'm here to talk to you about a very good friend of mine, the Big Boss Man.
10:37I had the pleasure of sitting there and listening to these interviews when new characters come in.
10:43And Vince, you know, what have you done?
10:44What's your background?
10:46You could see those wills in Vince McMahon's head just starting to churn.
10:52When Vince heard that Bubba had been a prison guard, that was the icing on the cake.
10:58Not only has he got a guy that's big enough to fight Hulk Hogan toe-to-toe, now there's the
11:04gimmick.
11:04Prison guard makes you serve a hard time.
11:08It was tailor-made.
11:10Vince asked him what the prisoners called him.
11:13And he said, boss.
11:16And so Vince said, okay, you're the Big Boss Man.
11:19Inside these walls, I'm the only judge.
11:23I'm the only jury.
11:26And indeed, beyond the execution.
11:29Wow, look at this one.
11:30He's got three hundred.
11:31He is a monster.
11:34The Big Boss Man.
11:37Oh, look at that.
11:39Oh, my.
11:40He could do it.
11:41I remember our first paycheck being raped both.
11:43We were in shock.
11:44It was a life-changing.
11:45What is going on here?
11:48After a successful debut, McMahon immediately thrusts Boss Man into the spotlight.
11:56Bubba got in the spot that most people only dream of.
12:01And you'll be singing the Hulkamania prison blues, brother.
12:06When he attacked Hogan on the Brother Love show, there was no stopping him.
12:12You got to start some hard time, Hogan, with a hard man.
12:15A big boss man.
12:17The Boss Man's feud, Hulk Hogan, builds to an epic steel cage match.
12:23The biggest moment of Ray Traylor's career.
12:26It's a cage match, the most difficult match in all the wrestling.
12:30Hogan's in for some punishment.
12:33I was so impressed with that cage match.
12:36Yeah, crushing blow by the close man.
12:39They brought out the best in each other.
12:45Hogan climbed to the top of the rope where he was sitting on top.
12:49He's choking him with the steel.
12:51Here's two 300-pound guys, and you didn't see this a whole lot back in those days.
12:56Hogan trying to set up the Boss Man.
12:58Hulk suplexes, big boss man, off the top of that cage.
13:03You realize that's 20 feet before you hit the ground?

15:43The impetus for Element was just a recognition that my health was impacted by inadequate electrolytes.
15:50There was nothing on the market that met the needs.
15:54It tended to be super high in sugar, woefully inadequate in sodium.
15:58When I finally did get my electrolytes on point, it was like a light switch was flipped.
16:02We've seen this play out across thousands of health journeys.
16:05I hope Element can be just as meaningful for you.
16:13Hey, buddy.
16:14Morning.
16:15I'm a stickler for good dental care.
16:17Me too.
16:18Ooh, looking sharp today.

16:23No, please don't say it.
16:25A big dental bill.

17:28Hulk Hogan's superplex off the cage to the Big Boss Man elevates their match to legendary stats.
17:35You can't believe it!
17:36I've never seen a superplex off the top of the cage before!
17:40Everybody remembers when Hulk Hogan gave the Big Boss Man a superplex off the top of the steel cage.
17:48And the people went, oh!
17:50Because they didn't see it coming.
17:52McMan, I think they're both knocked out!
17:54That was unheard of for Hogan to do something that daring, but also for a guy that size of Boss
18:01Man to take that bump was unheard of.
18:03When I saw that, holy cow, this guy, he's not only a good performer and a good man, he's not
18:11afraid to sacrifice his body for the good of a match.
18:14One of the most drooling matches in World Wrestling Federation history!
18:20The Boss Man's feud with Hogan cements Ray Traylor as a main event attraction.
18:27Whoa!
18:27They go right at it, don't they?
18:29The Big Boss Man, from the time of his arrival in the WWF, was figured in among the top stars.
18:34With such sports!
18:35But there's a man standing by!
18:37He called me one week, he said,
18:39Jimmy, guess how much money I made last week?
18:41I'm like, how much?
18:41He said, $12,000!
18:43The Boss Man will be happy to just keep matching him back.
18:47He made the same amount in one paycheck as he did for a whole entire year as a correctional.
18:52Money does change your life, and it does make things easier, or it can make things harder.
18:57But it did not change your area one bit.
18:59We lived in nice neighborhoods and a nice home, but we had nothing in common with anybody in there.
19:04The one thing that Vince did that no other promoters were able to do is go out and make his
19:11guy's mainstream name.
19:13The Big Boss Man showed up on Arsenio Hall.
19:16How did you feel when Hulk Hogan was whipping his ass?
19:22That's where Big Boss Man started crossing over into being a celebrity.
19:27Though originally cast as a villain, the Big Boss Man becomes a new fan favorite.
19:35Vince waited until the time was right, and then slowly he started making Boss Man a baby face.
19:43And he stands for truth, justice, and the Hulk Hogan way.
19:47And that's none other than the Big Boss Man.
19:52He'll be in my pocket.
19:53What about that?
19:54When the thing is flipped, Big Boss Man is going to lock the bad guys up for their transgressions.
19:59With me in your corner, I guarantee that Earthquake and Thetal Rumble are going to throw hard down.
20:08It was a natural transition.
20:12That's what everybody wants to see, right?
20:14An incorruptible man of the law.
20:16He covers it!
20:18That was insane.
20:20And then the merchandising.
20:23There's the Big Boss Man nightstick.
20:25And there's the real one right there.
20:26And the action figures.
20:28Oh, my God!
20:30That's it!
20:30They even had, like, Big Boss Man pillow buddies where the kids could sleep curled up with the Big Boss
20:37Man.
20:37I'm going to guess what a Boss Man.
20:40And the song.
20:42If you ever take a trip down a car, I can't do it.
20:47He carries a big stick upon a chain to it.
20:50They made him sound so amazing.
20:57He's a main eventer.
20:59He's got all the merchandise.
21:00He must be the happiest man on Earth.
21:03But who's the real law enforcement officer?
21:06My authority is international.
21:09You're just a Georgia cop.
21:11You're not in my league, brother.
21:13That's bottom line.
21:14My name is Jacques Rougeau, but you may remember me as the Mountie, because I always get my man.
21:21Vince called me up.
21:23He said, Jacques, he says, I have a character I want you to play.
21:27We have this American cop, and we're going to have this Canadian cop, the Mountie.
21:32So were you a real mountain?
21:34No, but I was a real jerk.
21:41I think the big blowoff was a jailhouse match.
21:45It was decisive.
21:47There was only one law enforcement officer.
21:50It was the Big Boss Man.
21:54In those days, we were on the road 25 days a month, bumping, hurting themselves, giving
21:58their mind to traveling, canceled flights.
22:01Your kids are waiting for you at home.
22:03You miss them so much.
22:06The state of mind of the person that's giving its body and told for 25 days a month is suffering.
22:12People don't see what that goes on for real sometimes, how hard it is to, you know, be
22:17a family when you're away 300 days a year.
22:20Dad, he was on the road so much in my very early childhood.
22:26Come here.
22:29You want to stay in there?
22:31Don't be mean.
22:32I remember thinking, who is this man?
22:35Like, why is he stealing my attention from my mom?
22:39But he explained early on that this lifestyle and his career that, you know, some things
22:47there's going to be a trade-off.
22:49I can't tell you how many times me spending time with dad was going to visit sick kids at
22:55the hospital.
22:56To be in the position that he was, if his presence can light somebody's face up and make them happy,
23:05it was a duty to him.
23:09Ray receives an offer from rival World Championship Wrestling, which is luring away WWF talent
23:15with big money and a lighter schedule.
23:19With WCW, all of his buddies only worked 150 days a year for the same amount of money.
23:25I'm very thankful that he ended up going to WCW.
23:29Now you see, pose for me.
23:31We were able to spend a lot more time with him and do a lot more stuff together as a
23:35family.
23:36He loved taking us on trips.
23:38Deep sea fishing was always a fun one.
23:41And we had a beautiful home with the lake that he was really proud of.
23:44So we spent a lot of time there also just fishing and doing redneck stuff.
23:55We had such a great little community with the Steiners and their kids.
24:03Bubba enjoyed the WCW run because he got to spend more time with his family.
24:07But his professional profile was harmed.
24:12Ray couldn't be big boss man in WCW because Vince owned the character.
24:17So it ended up a revolving door of stupid names and ridiculous gimmicks.
24:25The Bubba!
24:28The Bubba!
24:30And because it was in the news and it was a branch of law enforcement, loosely,
24:37one of them was the Guardian Angel.
24:39I'd like to welcome you into the world widely known as the Guardian Angel.
24:44That idiot Curtis Sliwa and his ridiculous group of unarmed citizens
24:49that wanted to make a world a better place.
24:51I'm surprised they didn't make him a meter maid.
24:54The Guardian Angel!
24:58But it wasn't really as rotten as it would be when he went back to the WWF.
25:03Despite the fact that Ray Traylor was one of the most talented guys
25:07of the past 10 years in the business,
25:10he is now remembered for taking part in some of the worst wrestling television
25:15that has ever been perpetrated on the air.
25:24But we were gods.
25:26I'm a storyteller.
25:28The people are going to believe whatever I tell them.
25:30I just think I go kill this guy.
25:32This story right here is going to knock you out.
25:35They built the sport.
25:37I turned myself into a f***ing monster.
25:39This is what it cost them.
25:41My life is over.
25:42My lawyers would not appreciate me doing this interview.
25:45Apparently he had killed his girlfriend.
25:46or a dark side of the cage.

28:24In 1998, the Big Boss Man returns to a reshaped WWF.
28:29Welcome everybody and welcome to WWF Raw!
28:33With new talent and edgier storylines.
28:36Anything is worth it.
28:38Oh!
28:48The feud between Vince McMahon and Stone Cold Steve Austin
28:52was the single hottest money-drawing rivalry
28:56in professional wrestling.
28:57Oh no!
28:59It's awesome!
29:00When you have very strong characters
29:02and put them together,
29:08the shit writes itself.
29:11Stop it!
29:12Obviously, the Big Boss Man
29:14was well-defined as a character
29:17for years and years and years.
29:20My name is Vince Russo
29:22and I was the head writer of the WWF
29:24during the Attitude Era.
29:26When we brought Ray in,
29:29Ray was not calling us.
29:31We were calling him
29:32because we needed him on the show.
29:35Wait a minute!
29:36Here comes the security guard!
29:38It's the God!
29:39What the hell?
29:40McMahon's security guard!
29:42It's the Big Boss Man!
29:43He became the bodyguard for Vince McMahon.
29:47Instead of the blue shirt
29:50and the old cop stereotype
29:51from Cobb County, Georgia,
29:54now he's in the tactical gear
29:55and the all-black heavy vest.
29:58It looked like a SWAT team member.
30:00And now he's serving the man.
30:02I've been washing demands for him!
30:04You're going to fight by him!
30:06It's not law, order, and justice.
30:08It's whatever Vince wants.
30:09Boss Man, if you will.
30:13That was a great spot.
30:15Get him!
30:15Teach him a lesson!
30:16It was always cool
30:17to get to watch him on TV.
30:19I remember mom having people over
30:22and ordering a pay-per-view
30:24and I'm going to go to school
30:25the next day
30:26and a bunch of kids
30:27are going to be like,
30:28I watched your dad
30:29on TV last night.
30:31Man, what a cool life
30:33I've gotten to live.
30:35Are you around Stone Cold
30:37and The Rock
30:37and all these guys?
30:38I love The Rock.
30:40You smell what The Rock is cooking.
30:42Rocky's birthday
30:43is on dad's birthday.
30:45And so every year
30:46we made him cars.
30:47Wait a minute!
30:48Yes!
30:48Yes!
30:49He was the best.
30:51He's not having a chance
30:51to smell what he was cooking!
30:53What about this?
30:55And I was a huge Stone Cold fan.
30:57He's big and scary
30:59like when you're a little kid.
31:00But yeah, I loved it.
31:02And that would have been amazing
31:03to see a Steve Austin
31:05and a Big Boss Man feud.
31:07Come on, Boss Man!
31:08Get him in!
31:09Get him!
31:10You would think
31:10there would be
31:11the Big Boss Man
31:12and Steve Austin.
31:14We didn't get that.
31:18I'm going to paint the picture for you.
31:20We're going to do this spot.
31:22Vince, myself,
31:23we're going to interfere in the match.
31:25It's a bad man to be hurt with.
31:27Boss Man's supposed to hit Stone Cold
31:28with a chair
31:29and knock him out.
31:32I see Boss Man backstage.
31:34Ray had been going over his match
31:36with Undertaker
31:36for the last hour.
31:38And I told Ray,
31:40you better be there.
31:42Here comes the spot.
31:44We start walking out.
31:47Vince elbows me.
31:49Where's Boss Man?
31:50I look in the whole ship.
31:54I'm watching on the monitor.
31:56I know this is Boss Man's spot.
32:00He's standing right next to me
32:02in the back.
32:04And I said,
32:05bro,
32:05you're supposed to be out there.
32:08The holy shit look
32:10on his face.
32:13Stone Cold's down.
32:15There's a chair
32:16introduced in the ring.
32:19There's no Boss Man.
32:21And I look at Vince,
32:22Vince,
32:22do it.
32:23Mind you,
32:24Stone Cold just come off this edge
32:26from having a broken neck.
32:28So I'm thinking,
32:29Briscoe,
32:30if you hurt this guy,
32:31you're going to get fired.
32:35Briscoe,
32:35a tear shot.
32:38Oh, shit.
32:39That was awful.
32:42When Stone Cold comes to the back,
32:43man,
32:43and he'd shoot Boss Man out.
32:46He missed his cue.
32:48He was in the dressing room
32:50talking to the Undertaker.
32:51And I love Ray Traylor to death,
32:54but I cussed that up and down.
32:57I remember Dad being really upset
33:00with himself about that one
33:01because he really dropped the ball there.
33:03After that spot,
33:05his push kind of started
33:06just slowly,
33:07slowly dying out
33:09and then where he would
33:09just another guy after that.
33:11After a mistake cost Ray
33:14a high-profile feud
33:15with Steve Austin,
33:17the Boss Man's next storyline
33:18shocks audiences
33:20and his family.
33:22In the hell
33:24NFL match!
33:26At WrestleMania 99,
33:29Boss Man got the opportunity
33:31to face the Undertaker
33:32in a cage match,
33:33and that would have been great
33:35on its own.
33:37But then,
33:39unfortunately,
33:39other forces
33:40took over.
33:44As a writer,
33:45I've got to think
33:47of something
33:48that you've never
33:49seen before,
33:51and I don't mind
33:53when you say,
33:54holy shit,
33:55I can't believe
33:56they're doing that.
33:58He called me like,
33:59hey, you're going to go
34:00to WrestleMania.
34:01I said, why?
34:01He said,
34:02because they're going to do
34:02something crazy,
34:03and they just want
34:04to show you there.
34:05He said,
34:06they're probably going
34:06to hang me.
34:16It's the $7 Sonic

35:42more people in the West,
35:44but would it hurt
35:45to have a little more West
35:47than the people?
35:50This guy is a stubborn eater
35:52until recently.
35:54Spot and tangle unkibble.
35:56It's all fresh ingredients.
35:57It is a great product,
35:58great company,
35:59and great food.
35:59I'm so happy
36:00that I have found something
36:02that this little stinker
36:03right here eats.
36:04It's a game changer.
36:12Vice Encounters.
36:14tomorrow night.
36:21What the hell
36:22is the Undertaker doing?
36:23What's he doing?
36:24As the shocking scene unfolds,
36:27Boss Man's family
36:28watches from ringside.
36:30He's choking him
36:30with that noose
36:31referee do something!
36:34We need help!
36:36The Boss Man
36:37made home from the cell!
36:39The Boss Man
36:40made home from the cell!
36:42It was controversial.
36:44You're not supposed
36:45to hang people
36:46on television
36:47by the neck.
36:48They basically
36:48had a public lynching.
36:50Oh my God!
36:51Cut him down!
36:53Apparently that was
36:54one of the first times
36:55his family came
36:56to see him wrestle.
36:57Oh my God!
36:58Now that I did not know.
37:01That's horrific.
37:04I'll never forget
37:06watching my dad
37:07hang in there
37:08and I thought
37:10honestly
37:11was this necessary?
37:14Once again
37:15WWE
37:16pushing the envelope
37:17until it's just
37:18teetered on the heads there.
37:21He wasn't happy
37:22about the storyline
37:22but what's he gonna do?
37:24He has to do it anyway.
37:24Of course
37:26there was a harness
37:26and etc.
37:27But how do you
37:28come back
37:29from a hanging?
37:33After the
37:34controversial storyline
37:39Ray realizes
37:40he needs to be honest
37:41with his children
37:42about the business.
37:44There did come
37:45a point in time
37:46where dad
37:48had to sit me down
37:49and explain
37:50the industry
37:51because the storylines
37:53that he was wrapped up in
37:54is a nightmare
37:55for a school
37:57aged child.
37:59That's the beauty
38:00of professional wrestling.
38:01You can get away
38:02with anything.
38:03Oh my!
38:04He just ripped
38:05a nose ring
38:06and it draws!
38:07But what you
38:08can get away with
38:09then
38:09some would consider
38:11I'm sure
38:12bad taste
38:12nowadays.
38:14My name is Al Snow
38:15former WWE superstar
38:17and I used to wrestle
38:18the Big Boss Man.
38:20As Al Snow
38:21my whole

38:23or persona
38:24was that I

38:26so
38:27I was free
38:28to do
38:29absolutely
38:30anything
38:31to be entertaining.
38:34Boss Man and I
38:35are feuding.
38:36At one point
38:37Boss Man
38:38kidnaps
38:38my dog
38:39Pepper
38:40not only is it
38:41my dog
38:42this is my friend.
38:44The right thing
38:45would be
38:45give me back
38:46my friend.
38:47I am Al.
38:48Boss Man says
38:49he'll give me
38:50the dog back
38:50but we have to
38:51sit down
38:52and eat first.
38:53Will you do me
38:53a favor?
38:54Try not to get
38:55one of them
38:56paws stuck
38:57in your teeth
38:57and then that's
38:58where I find out
38:59that's right Al.

39:12How do you
39:13explain
39:14to your friends
39:15that your dad
39:16didn't
39:16chop some
39:17guy's dog
39:18up
39:18and feed it
39:19to him?
39:21Yeah
39:22tastes like
39:22chicken
39:23When fans
39:24today
39:25talk about
39:26the worst
39:26moments of
39:27wrestling
39:27But if I
39:28could have
39:28a son
39:29as stupid
39:29as you
39:30I'd have
39:31wished for
39:31cancer
39:31so I
39:32would die
39:33too
39:33Fans
39:34talk about
39:35Big Show's
39:35father's
39:36funeral
39:39All of a sudden
39:40Big Paul's
39:40man's taking
39:41a rope
39:41and chain
39:42Daddy always
39:43wanted to be
39:43a drag queen
39:44Big Show
39:44I'm gonna make
39:45him a drag queen
39:46right here
39:47Start dragging
39:48in a casket
39:49He's violent
39:50He's seditious
39:52It was sick
39:53but it was great
39:54Boss man is sick
39:56I remember
39:58getting mean mugged
39:59as a child
40:00by teenagers
40:01just because
40:02of who he was
40:03They know what
40:04to do with
40:04that nightstick
40:05It was embarrassing
40:07for me
40:09But at the end
40:10of the day
40:11he was
40:12trying to get
40:13that check
40:13to feed his family
40:14I remember
40:17being horrified
40:18seeing him
40:19have a glass
40:20busted
40:20over his head
40:21And the glass
40:24doesn't shatter
40:25how it's supposed
40:26to
40:27He can't play
40:28with us
40:29because he's
40:29so beat up
40:30from the road
40:31that we're
40:32bringing in
40:33ice packs
40:33for him
40:34around the clock
40:34and he's just
40:35in immense amount
40:36of pain
40:38He started
40:39self-medicating
40:40and then he figured
40:40out
40:40well I can work
40:41as long as I have
40:42medicine
40:45The big thing
40:45was these things
40:46called somas
40:47They don't make
40:48you quit hurting
40:48they just make
40:49you not care
40:51Somas is a muscle
40:52relaxer
40:53and they would
40:53mix it up
40:54with the pain
40:54pills
40:56And if you didn't
40:56eat
40:57you would fall
40:57over your plate
40:59Since the one
40:59who doesn't know
41:00what's going on
41:01you would think
41:01they're dying
41:07It was really

44:58painkillers
45:00ray probably couldn't walk
45:01without pain medicine
45:02at this point
45:03his back was out
45:04his knees hurt him
45:05i mean he was just
45:06in such bad shape
45:07when he goes back
45:08on the road
45:09he starts hitting
45:10the medicine really heavy
45:12ray's addiction
45:13is fueled by prescriptions
45:15from doctors
45:16across the country
45:18back before there was
45:19a database
45:20we had doctors
45:21everywhere
45:21so one guy says
45:22hey i got a guy
45:23in atlanta
45:23buh buh buh
45:25i knew dr aston
45:26when i was in my
45:27early 20s
45:28he was a diet pill
45:29doctor
45:31and i guess ray must
45:33have asked him
45:33to write pain pills
45:34i think he was kind
45:35of a wrestling fan
45:36because he would write
45:37whatever they told him
45:39a pill pusher
45:40a drug dealer
45:42you're giving this man
45:43150 somas
45:44150 pain pills
45:45and testosterone too
45:46you know i mean
45:47whatever you want
45:49it's like
45:49you have the money
45:51people let you do
45:53what you want
45:53and i think that's
45:54disgusting
45:56you can talk to
45:57all the atlanta guys
45:58from wcw
45:59or wwe
46:00there's a ton
46:02of them that came
46:03through there
46:03so many of them
46:04are in the graveyard
46:05right now
46:08i knew chris
46:09was going there
46:10chris you
46:11benoit
46:14new charges
46:15for the georgia doctor
46:16who treated a pro wrestler
46:17who killed himself
46:18and his family
46:19dr phil aston
46:20was charged thursday
46:21in a new 175 count
46:24federal indictment
46:25with conspiracy
46:25and improperly
46:27dispensing drugs
46:28if i could say
46:29something to dr aston
46:31um
46:32i think i would ask him
46:33if he knew
46:33did you know
46:35that
46:36this medication
46:38was as addictive
46:39as it is
46:41did they ever tell
46:43them
46:44hey you're gonna get
46:45physiologically
46:46depended upon
46:47this chemical
46:48and it's gonna be
46:49hell on you
46:49to come off of
46:52did you know
46:54that
46:56people were gonna
46:58get hurt
47:01in 2003
47:02ray's contract
47:03expires
47:04leaving him
47:05searching for
47:06a new line of work
47:07a lot of people
47:08don't know this
47:09but
47:09he ran for
47:10commissioner
47:11for pauling county
47:14the night of the
47:15election
47:15ray was
47:17messed up
47:17on pills
47:18he couldn't even
47:19hardly walk
47:20but everybody
47:21protected him
47:21and that was just
47:23a breaking point
47:24for me
47:24we separated
47:27as ray continues
47:29battling addiction
47:30a long time
47:31friend succumbs
47:32to theirs
47:37your heart
47:38can only take
47:38so much
47:39certain things
47:40you know
47:40and uh
47:41you know
47:42we lost
47:42kurt
47:44kirk died
47:45that really
47:46bothered
47:46a lot
47:47there was
47:48definitely
47:48someone's
47:49involved in it
47:50when somebody
47:51like
47:52kirk
47:52henning
47:52passes away
47:54you would think
47:55that that would
47:55be a wake-up call
47:56but
47:58look at how many
47:59passed away
48:00since then
48:02that's how
48:02strong that
48:03stuff is
48:09unless you were
48:10in our world
48:11back in the day
48:12in the late
48:1380s
48:14the 90s
48:16attitude era
48:17you just have
48:18no clue
48:18hi everyone
48:20i am terry
48:21runnels
48:21and big boss
48:22man ray trailer
48:23is one of
48:25my dearest
48:25friends
48:27the reason we
48:29have so many
48:29deaths in our
48:30industry i believe
48:32is because
48:33we don't have
48:33an off season
48:34if you
48:36are injured
48:37then you
48:38lose your spot
48:39and then
48:40somebody else
48:41comes in
48:42and takes your
48:43spot and takes
48:44your money
48:44basically
48:47with these guys
48:48in that era
48:49and the amount
48:50of pain
48:50that they were
48:51in
48:51it was just
48:52a byproduct
48:53of the industry
48:55and sacrificing
48:56your body
48:57to the sport
48:58like that
48:58you have to
49:00make that
49:00decision
49:00am i gonna
49:02live or am
49:02i gonna die
49:08after kurt
49:09passed away
49:10he had a
49:11change of
49:11perspective
49:12he wasn't
49:13a lost cause
49:15he loved
49:16to say
49:16to me
49:16enough
49:17that he
49:17was willing
49:17to do
49:17what he
49:18had to do
49:18he said
49:19can i
49:19come back
49:19home
49:21he wanted
49:21us to
49:22renew our
49:22vows
49:23and start
49:23all over
49:24and that
49:24was just
49:24perfect
49:25and then
49:26i never
49:27saw him
49:27get messed
49:28up again
49:30returning
49:30to his
49:31family
49:31ray maintains
49:32his sobriety
49:34despite struggling
49:35with chronic
49:35pain
49:38he was
49:38sitting
49:38in front
49:39of the tv
49:40his knees
49:40was hurting
49:41he could
49:41not stop
49:41his knees
49:42from hurting
49:44he told
49:45the girls
49:45you know
49:46daddy's hurting
49:46i'll be up
49:47there in about
49:4730 minutes
49:48to tuck
49:48y'all
49:50so i went
49:50on up
49:50there and
49:51i read
49:51to the girls
49:53one of them
49:53wanted something
49:53to drink
49:57so when i
49:57go down
49:58the stairs
49:58he was just
49:59laid back
49:59like this
49:59in a seat
50:01you know
50:01i didn't think
50:02anything about
50:02it except
50:03for the color
50:03his color
50:04just didn't
50:05look right
50:09i'll never
50:10forget it
50:10when we
50:11heard mom
50:11scream
50:16got the phone
50:16i'm calling
50:179-1-1
50:18she told me
50:19i've got to
50:19get him out
50:20of the chair
50:20and put him
50:20flat on the
50:21ground
50:21i'm like
50:21you don't
50:22know what
50:22you're asking
50:24and she said
50:24i don't care
50:25what you gotta
50:25do
50:25you gotta
50:25get him
50:26flat on

53:32that we deal with
53:33on a daily basis
53:33it seems to have

54:28Jimmy saw Rick's hair

55:11to me
55:12I'm so sorry
55:13I'm so sorry
55:13or I know
55:14how you feel
55:15no you don't
55:18you don't
55:19and it's
55:19Trevor Rogers
55:20he's an old friend
55:21of the Cornette family
55:22from Louisville, Kentucky
55:22and he's been a friend
55:23for a long time
55:25me and the Midnight Express
55:26were like a week away
55:27from our first reunion
55:31and he died
55:32like the week before
55:33the first one we did
55:38give me a second
55:49give me a second
55:501986 was my favorite year
55:51in wrestling
55:52because I was with my friends
55:54Midnight Express
55:55and Bubba became the fourth member
55:58we were both
55:59early 20s
56:00making a fortune
56:02he's gonna win that cage match
56:04baby
56:04living our dream
56:07and I think that was just
56:08my favorite time
56:09because I don't know
56:10that it was that fun anymore
56:11after that
56:12I liked that guy
56:18I was so traumatized
56:20by his death
56:21it took me
56:23over a decade
56:24to
56:25to even be able to like
56:27think about his wrestling career
56:30I felt
56:31robbed
56:32a little bit
56:33because
56:34I was so young
56:35when he passed away
56:37for a long time
56:38I felt
56:39angry
56:40I really
56:41really got cynical
56:43there for a little bit
56:46I'm amazed
56:47that I've made it
56:48like to the age
56:48I am now
56:49I've struggled
56:51I've overcome stuff
56:52I've messed up
56:53and had to fix it
56:55I'm grateful
56:57that
56:57in spite of
56:58my trauma
56:59it doesn't define me
57:00I work
57:02in the behavioral
57:02health space
57:03we like to say
57:04addiction
57:05is the opposite
57:06of connection
57:08I used to worry
57:09that
57:10speaking about
57:11this struggle
57:13that he had
57:14that people
57:15would hate me
57:15for it
57:16but now
57:17I've really realized
57:18that it's important
57:20to talk about
57:20it's a part of his story
57:21and it's a part of my story
57:23because
57:24it was hard
57:25the teachable story here
57:26is that there's always
57:27a comeback
57:28if you want it
57:29you know
57:29and it lets people know
57:30they can change
57:33I never thought
57:34I would have liked
57:35wrestling
57:35but really
57:36I would say
57:37into my 20s
57:38it clicked for me
57:47in 2016
57:48for the hall of fame
57:49my co-workers
57:50were like
57:51big boss man's
57:52your dad
57:52and I was like
57:53yeah
57:54and they were like
57:54that is so cool
57:55and I was like

57:57you guys think
57:58I think this is cool
57:59I want to start off
58:00by just saying

58:02to all the fans
58:03for keeping dad's memory alive
58:05all these years
58:06as you grow older
58:07and you have hindsight
58:08how blessed am I
58:10to have gotten
58:12to share him
58:12with so many people
58:18when Ray went into the ring
58:19he had the stick
58:21but when he came home
58:21he had his heart
58:23and he loved his family
58:24and everyone that knew Ray
58:26knows how he loved his family
58:32the thing I miss most
58:33is with Ray
58:35is the fact that
58:36he smiles
58:37everyone smiles
58:38and he time goes by
58:39that you don't have
58:39a Ray conversation
58:40that you don't remember
58:41something funny

58:49I love his laugh
58:56I think Ray's legacy
58:58in the wrestling business
58:59is that he'll be one of those
59:01all-time villains
59:02and a wonderful human being
59:05even though Ray fed me my dog
59:07I still think he was a great guy
59:10the big boss man
59:11should be remembered
59:13by all the fans
59:13and the kids
59:14who liked him
59:15and looked up to him
