The new US-Iran agreement has cleared its biggest political hurdle after Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei gave cautious approval to the deal. However, Tehran continues to signal deep mistrust of Washington, raising questions about whether the agreement can survive the difficult negotiations ahead.

In this episode of World News, we examine how Iran's leadership views the agreement, why Tehran plans to introduce maritime fees in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and how delayed negotiations in Switzerland could complicate efforts to achieve a lasting peace deal.

We also look at fresh warnings from Iran's Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who says any violation of the agreement by the United States or its allies will trigger a strong response.

With global oil markets, Middle East security, Israel-Hezbollah tensions, and US foreign policy all linked to the outcome of these talks, the next 60 days could prove critical for regional stability.

Will diplomacy prevail, or is this simply a temporary pause in a long-running confrontation?

00:02Hello and welcome. I'm Pankaj Mishra. You're watching World News, the top stories of the day.
00:07One India asks if Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, had doubts over the U.S.-Iran agreement.
00:15Tehran signals it may start charging maritime fees in the strategic strait of Hormuz.
00:20Fresh uncertainty surrounds peace negotiators after key talks are delayed.
00:25And Iran's top negotiator issues a sharp warning to Washington, saying any violation of the deal will be met with
00:33a crushing response.
00:34Let's take a closer look at the top stories.
00:38Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has given his approval to the new Memorandum of Understanding signed between Tehran and Washington.
00:45But the question is, are there doubts in his mind?
00:49He has some reservations that made public.
00:52In a statement, Khamenei said, personally, he held a different view of the agreement.
00:59However, he ultimately allowed the deal to move forward after receiving assurances from President Masood Pazeshkian and senior security officials
01:09that Iran's national interests would be protected.
01:12Khamenei also suggested that the United States pushed hard for the agreement because it needed a diplomatic breakthrough after months
01:20of conflict.
01:21His comments are significant because they show that while Iran's leadership is supporting negotiations, there is still deep skepticism inside
01:30Tehran.
01:31For now, the deal has political backing, but the real test will be whether both sides can turn it into
01:38a lasting agreement.
01:39And the signs of cracks are started to show.
01:43Donald Trump called it a win.
01:46Iran's supreme leader called it something else entirely.
01:50Desperation.
01:51A deal has been signed.
01:53A war may be ending.
01:54But the man who just agreed to it just got publicly roasted by the very country he was negotiating with.
02:01Here's what happened.
02:02At a dinner inside the Palace of Versailles, yes, that Versailles, hosted by French President Macron after the G7 summit,
02:11the U.S. and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
02:15The document is called the Islamabad MOU.
02:18It calls for immediate end to military operations, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the U.S. lifting
02:26its naval blockade of Iran within 30 days.
02:29Sounds like a big American win, right?
02:32Well, Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtava Khamenei, had thoughts.
02:37Within hours of the signing, Khamenei posted a message confirming the deal and immediately reframed the whole thing.
02:45Quote,
02:46It was the American president who, out of desperation, used all kinds of leverage to bring this about.
02:52Let that sink in.
02:53The supreme leader of Iran just told the world Trump needed this deal more than we did.
03:00He also admitted he personally opposed the agreement, but gave his blessing anyway, trusting Iran's president to protect Iranian interests.
03:09In other words, I had doubts, but fine, we'll allow it.
03:13The message was clear.
03:15Iran wasn't begging for peace.
03:17America was.
03:19So what exactly did both sides agree to?
03:21The U.S. commits to lifting its naval blockade within 30 days and withdrawing forces from Iran's vicinity within 30
03:29days of a final deal.
03:31Iran agrees to ensure safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days.
03:38And here's the kicker.
03:40Both sides now have 60 days to negotiate a comprehensive final agreement.
03:45This MOU is just the beginning.
03:48Khamenei's warning was blunt.
03:50If America tries to push for more than what's written, they will not submit to them.
03:55So where does this leave us?
03:57Trump gets to claim he ended a Middle East conflict.
04:00Iran gets sanctions relief and an open strait.
04:04And Khamenei gets to tell his people, we didn't blink, they did.
04:08If this holds, whether the 60-day final deal actually comes together and whether either side trusts the other, that's
04:16the real story still unfolding.
04:18One thing's certain, in the Battle of Optics, Iran just drew first blood.
04:23If you found this interesting, hit like, subscribe, and drop your take in the comments.
04:28Was this a Trump win or did Iran play him?
04:32The road to a permanent peace agreement is already facing challenges.
04:36Plans for U.S. and Iranian negotiators to meet in Switzerland have been postponed, creating fresh uncertainty over the future
04:43of the negotiations.
04:44The memorandum signed this week gives both countries 60 days to reach a broader agreement covering sanctions, Iran's nuclear program,
04:53missile capabilities, and regional security issues.
04:56Complicating matters further is the growing violence in Lebanon, where clashes involving Israel and Hezbollah have intensified.
05:04Rising tensions on another front could easily spill over into the wider regional picture.
05:10Diplomats say the framework agreement was only the first step.
05:15The difficult negotiations are still ahead, and success is far from guaranteed.
05:20J.D. Vance packed his bags for Geneva.
05:24Then he didn't go.
05:26The U.S.-Iran peace talks, set for a mountaintop Swiss resort, were canceled.
05:32No warning.
05:33No explanation.
05:34And the world just got a whole lot more nervous.
05:38Here's where we are.
05:39Just a day ago, the U.S. and Iran signed a 14-point interim deal, a fragile ceasefire meant to
05:47pause a war that has already killed at least 7,000 people and sent energy prices spiraling across the globe.
05:55The next step? Technical talks in Bergenstock, Switzerland.
06:00Friday, J.D. Vance leading the American side.
06:03Switzerland confirmed the venue.
06:05Iran said it was ready, technically.
06:08Then Thursday night, the White House released a statement.
06:12The logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable.
06:16And just like that, Geneva went dark.
06:19So what actually happened?
06:21Iran gave the first signal.
06:24Before Vance even canceled, Tehran's semi-official Tasneem agency reported that Iranian negotiators needed to see actual implementation of the
06:35interim deal before boarding any plane to Switzerland.
06:39In other words, show us you mean it first.
06:42Then there was the signing ceremony dispute.
06:45U.S. officials wanted a formal ceremony in Geneva.
06:49Iran's foreign ministry called it unnecessary.
06:52Both presidents had already signed.
06:55Why the theater?
06:56And underneath all of it, deep structural distrust.
07:00Iran's supreme leader called Trump's signature a sign of desperation.
07:05Trump had sworn he'd only accept Iran's unconditional surrender.
07:10What he got was sanctions relief, unfrozen assets worth tens of billions, and Iran keeping control of the Strait of
07:19Hormuz.
07:19Some of Trump's own Republican allies in Congress are now asking who actually won this war.
07:26And then there's the wild card nobody can control.
07:30Israel was left out of the U.S.-Iran deal entirely.
07:34And Israel does not care.
07:36On Friday, the same day talks were supposed to begin in Geneva, Israeli strikes in Lebanon killed at least 15
07:44people.
07:45Israel says it's targeting Hezbollah.
07:48The deal calls for permanent termination of the Lebanon war.
07:52Israel published a new map showing an expanded occupation zone.
07:57Trump is now openly clashing with Netanyahu, one of the biggest rifts between the two countries in decades.
08:04But the strikes keep coming.
08:06How do you negotiate peace when your closest ally is actively blowing holes in the agreement?
08:13Here's the bottom line.
08:14The Geneva talks aren't just delayed.
08:17They're a mirror, reflecting every crack in this so-called deal.
08:21Iran won't move until it sees proof.
08:24The U.S. can't fully deliver while Israel keeps fighting.
08:28And a 60-day clock is already ticking toward a nuclear negotiation that Iran's supreme leader just described as anything
08:36but easy.
08:37Quote,
08:38If the American side wants to be too demanding, we will not accept it.
08:43That's not the language of a country ready to sit down and talk.
08:47The bags are unpacked.
08:49The resort is empty.
08:50And somewhere between Washington, Tehran, and Tel Aviv, the most important negotiation of the decade is hanging by a thread.
08:59Geneva said the talks are off.
09:01The question is whether the peace goes with them.
09:04Even as negotiations continue, Iran is making it clear that it has red lines.
09:19In a strongly worded statement, Ghalibaf said Iran would faithfully implement the conditions approved by the supreme leader,
09:32but any sign of bad faith would trigger what he called, quote-unquote, crushing response.
09:38The warning underlines the fragile nature of the current ceasefire.
09:43While both sides are talking about diplomacy, mistrust remains deeply rooted after years of confrontation.
09:51For investors, policymakers, and allies across the region, the message is clear.
09:57Peace remains possible, but it remains highly fragile too.
10:02Any violation by the American side, a reciprocal measure will be taken, according to the predetermined plan.
10:10That's not a threat from a rogue actor.
10:12That's an official statement from Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
10:16And it just dropped in the middle of a fragile brand new ceasefire deal.
10:21Here's what you need to know.
10:23The U.S. and Iran recently signed an interim agreement, a memorandum of understanding meant to end their direct conflict
10:30on all fronts,
10:32including Lebanon, including the proxy wars.
10:35Trump even went on social media calling for a complete ceasefire and urging everyone in the Middle East to let
10:42negotiations beautifully unfold.
10:44But Tehran?
10:46Tehran is not in a trusting mood.
10:48In a formal document released by Iran's Supreme National Security Council, the highest security body in the country, the language
10:56is ice cold.
10:57They speak of complete distrust of what they call the treacherous and covenant-breaking enemy.
11:03They're not talking about a rival.
11:05They're talking about the United States of America.
11:08And they make it crystal clear they're watching, monitoring every step of implementation, every deadline, every clause.
11:15Miss one, break one, a pre-planned, pre-determined response kicks in, automatically.
11:22No second warnings.
11:23That's the eye for an eye doctrine, stated openly, in writing, to the world.
11:29So what counts as a violation in Tehran's eyes?
11:33Sanctions reimposed before talks conclude?
11:35Trigger.
11:36The naval blockade not fully lifted?
11:39Trigger.
11:39Frozen Iranian assets still frozen?
11:43Trigger.
11:44Israel, backed by U.S. weapons, hitting Hezbollah in southern Lebanon the very next day after the agreement was signed.
11:51That one's already happening.
11:53In fact, Israeli drone strikes killed at least three people in Lebanon within 24 hours of the agreement.
12:00Hezbollah says it repelled a four-day Israeli offensive, and the world is watching to see if Washington can, or
12:06will, stop it.
12:07Here's the uncomfortable reality.
12:10Iran signed a deal with one hand, and issued a war doctrine with the other.
12:15They're telling the world, we are at the table, but we are not naive.
12:19The Supreme National Security Council pledged to the Supreme Leader and to the Iranian people
12:25that they will show no leniency whatsoever until Iranian rights are secured, and, as they put it,
12:32the pure blood of our martyrs is avenged.
12:34That's not negotiating language.
12:37That's a countdown clock.
12:39Will Washington can hold its partners in check before Tehran decides the clock has run out?
12:47So, while the new U.S.-Iran agreement has opened the door to diplomacy, major challenges remain ahead.
12:53Questions over enforcement, regional security, oil transit route, and future negotiations could determine
12:59whether this becomes a historic peace breakthrough or just another temporary pause in a long-running conflict.
13:07That's all for now.
13:08Thank you for watching, World Devils.
