00:00Iran says we're willing to renounce our desire to have a nuclear weapon.
00:06America has removed its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
00:11I think we ought to give peace a chance.
00:14President, I ask unanimous consent for the following
00:21in terms of my office to be granted four privileges until June 19th, 2026.
00:30Nathan Hayes, Bradley Fuseli, Gabby Sumrall, and Lucy John.
00:39Without objection.
00:45Mr. President, Nathan Hayes, to whom I just referred as an intern in my office,
00:53he's from Baton Rouge, he's a rising junior at LSU.
00:58Lucy John is from Lafayette, Louisiana.
01:03Lucy is a rising senior at Tulane.
01:06Bradley Fuseli is from Bill Platt.
01:11Bradley is a rising senior at LSU.
01:15And Gabby Sumrall from Monroe is a rising junior at Covenant College.
01:22They are interning in my office this summer, and I am glad to have them.
01:32Last night, Mr. President, I read the Memorandum of Understanding
01:39between the United States and Iran.
01:45I read it twice.
01:52And for what it's worth, here's my conclusion.
02:01I think we ought to give peace a chance.
02:06And that's all I'm saying today.
02:09You're entitled to your opinion, but all I'm saying today is,
02:14I think we ought to give peace a chance.
02:17I've, all week long, even before the memorandum came out,
02:23I've heard all the speculation about the agreement,
02:30the rank speculation.
02:33Listen, people say, well,
02:37I don't like this, and I don't like that,
02:40and this is in it, and it shouldn't be,
02:44and this isn't in it,
02:47and it should be,
02:49and if we do this,
02:51this is going to happen.
02:56And it's all rank speculation.
03:01The people offering these points of view,
03:05to which they're entitled,
03:07they're not clairvoyant.
03:10They're not any more clairvoyant than I am.
03:13Just like me, they have to wait for the future.
03:17Like everybody else.
03:22Here's what I see in the document.
03:25The only certainty,
03:30the only practical, real consequence
03:34of this document
03:36is that for 60 days,
03:40America has removed its blockade
03:43of the Strait of Hormuz.
03:46And for 60 days,
03:49Iran has removed its blockade
03:52of the Strait of Hormuz,
03:55which means ships containing
03:57oil and natural gas and fertilizer
04:01can go back and forth
04:04just like they were
04:05before the conflict started.
04:09The other practical consequence
04:12is that Iran
04:14will be able to start selling
04:16its oil again.
04:19for 60 days.
04:22The other thing
04:23that we're certain of
04:24is that
04:26as a result of this agreement,
04:29the price of oil
04:30is going down.
04:32And as a result of that,
04:35the price of gasoline
04:36is going down.
04:39And as a result of the Strait of Hormuz
04:43being open,
04:44the price of fertilizer,
04:45for example,
04:47and other commodities
04:48that go back and forth
04:50through the Strait of Hormuz
04:52are coming down.
04:53And that's a good thing.
04:57And that's all we know.
05:00So that's the only practical consequence
05:03of this document.
05:06Now, in the document,
05:08Iran says
05:11that it is willing to negotiate
05:13for 60 days
05:15to get rid of its fissile material
05:18that it can use
05:18to make a nuclear weapon,
05:21including but not limited to
05:23its sense refuges
05:25that it uses
05:26to enrich the uranium.
05:29And in the document,
05:31Iran says
05:32we're willing to
05:34renounce
05:35our desire
05:37to have a nuclear weapon.
05:42And in the document,
05:45Iran says
05:47for 60 days
05:48we're willing
05:49to negotiate
05:51some sort of inspection
05:55protocol
05:55so that the world
05:57can go in
05:58and make sure
05:59that Iran
05:59is telling the truth.
06:02They've got 60 days
06:04to do it.
06:07Not 160.
06:08Not a year.
06:10They've got 60 days.
06:14And President Trump
06:15has said
06:15if they don't do it,
06:18I think his expression was
06:20I'll start dropping bombs
06:23on their head again.
06:25That's the other thing
06:27that we know.
06:29Now, this might be
06:30a good time,
06:30Mr. President,
06:31to say
06:33that
06:33as I've said
06:35all week
06:36and as I've said
06:38in another context
06:40before,
06:42I trust
06:43the Iranian government
06:45like I trust
06:48gas station sushi.
06:53The Iranian government,
06:55not the Iranian people,
06:57the Iranian government
06:58are a bunch
06:59of religious nuts.
07:02their religion
07:04tells them
07:06that if you
07:08and I
07:09or anybody
07:11don't agree
07:13with all the tenets
07:14of their religion
07:15that they want
07:17to kill you
07:19and hurt you
07:20the entire time
07:22you're dying.
07:25As far as I'm concerned,
07:27if your religion
07:27tells you
07:28in order to be devout
07:30you have to kill somebody,
07:31you probably ought
07:32to get another religion.
07:36My experience
07:37with the Iranian government,
07:39not the Iranian people,
07:40is that they lie
07:42like they breathe.
07:44They lie
07:44like fish swim.
07:48They learn to lie
07:50before they learn
07:52to talk.
07:54But you know what?
07:57they've got 60 days
07:58to prove otherwise.
08:0160 days,
08:02not 160,
08:03not a year,
08:04they've got 60 days
08:05to prove otherwise.
08:08And if they don't prove it,
08:12the bombing
08:12is going to start again.
08:14I heard President Trump
08:15say it last night.
08:16Biggest doubt.
08:17It's right there
08:17on television.
08:18They've got 60 days.
08:21And if they don't do it,
08:23if they're jacking me around,
08:25I'm going to start
08:26bombing again.
08:30The other thing
08:31that I'm certain of
08:32today
08:36is that
08:38Iran
08:39is immeasurably
08:41weaker
08:43than it was
08:43a year ago.
08:44than it was
08:46before
08:47the United States
08:49and
08:50Israel
08:51bombed their
08:53nuclear facilities
08:54last June
08:55and before
08:56the conflict
08:57that we've
08:58watched transpire
08:59over the last
09:00couple of months.
09:03Immeasurably
09:04weaker.
09:06There are
09:07whole
09:08swaths
09:09of Iran
09:11that look like
09:12the aftermath
09:14of a
09:14bar brawl.
09:17There are
09:18entire
09:19regions
09:20in Iran
09:20that look like
09:22something out of
09:22Mad Max
09:234.
09:26We have
09:27bombed
09:28the living
09:28bejesus
09:29out of them.
09:31We have
09:33destroyed
09:33all their missiles
09:34but we've
09:35destroyed a bunch
09:36of them.
09:36We've destroyed
09:38their
09:39weapons
09:40production
09:41factories.
09:42We've
09:42destroyed
09:44their
09:44entire
09:45navy.
09:46We've
09:46destroyed
09:47a lot
09:47of their
09:47drones.
09:50We have
09:51just given
09:51them a
09:51curb
09:52stomping.
09:53Hated
09:54to do
09:54it
09:55but we
09:56did what
09:57we have
09:57to do.
09:58The
09:59private
09:59sector
10:00Iran's
10:01got
10:01I don't
10:02know
10:02how
10:03anybody's
10:03eating
10:04or living
10:04in Iran.
10:06They've
10:06got
10:0770%
10:08inflation.
10:09Huge
10:10unemployment.
10:13Iran
10:14today
10:14and I
10:15regret
10:16this
10:16but it
10:16had to
10:17be
10:17done.
10:17Iran
10:18today
10:18is
10:19public
10:19and
10:19private
10:19sector
10:20is held
10:21together
10:21with spit
10:22and duct
10:23tape.
10:28And all
10:29the president
10:30has done
10:30is say
10:31okay for
10:3160 days
10:32I'm
10:33going to
10:33give peace
10:34a chance
10:35and give
10:36you a
10:36chance
10:37to do
10:38what you
10:38say you're
10:38going to
10:39do.
10:3960 days.
10:41That's
10:41it.
10:43I hope
10:44it works
10:44out.
10:45I've got
10:46my doubts.
10:50but the
10:51president
10:51has taken
10:52a big
10:52risk
10:52here
10:53and he's
10:54been
10:54roundly
10:55criticized
10:55by my
10:56democratic
10:56friends
10:57which I
10:59don't really
10:59get.
11:00Since the
11:02conflict
11:02started
11:03my democratic
11:04colleagues
11:05have been
11:06offering
11:07bill
11:08after bill
11:08after bill
11:09to stop
11:10the conflict
11:11and to
11:12take the
11:13authority
11:13away from
11:14the executive
11:14branch
11:15to prosecute
11:16I don't
11:17know how
11:18many bills
11:18a squillion
11:19bill
11:20after bill
11:21after bill
11:21they haven't
11:23passed
11:23but now
11:24that the
11:25president
11:25has done
11:26it
11:27the democrats
11:28are unhappy
11:31the new
11:32york times
11:33I was reading
11:33the new
11:34york times
11:34this morning
11:35I mean
11:35they're just
11:36bashing
11:36this agreement
11:37which they've
11:39been asking
11:39for
11:39now I
11:41don't mean
11:41any disrespect
11:42but I
11:43discount
11:45what's in
11:46the new
11:46york times
11:47because I
11:48know the
11:49folks running
