00:22bring out the Sun let me start by thanking Addison for that magnificent
00:30introduction and for exemplifying the heart excellence and determination that
00:36has blossomed right here on the south side for a very long time I also want to

01:43our country over so many years and for your constant friendship and support of
01:51our family we love you guys truly oh to our daughters Malia and Sasha who will
02:02always be my babies even though we're no longer playing hide-and-seek on the south
02:09lawn with Bo or hosting sleepovers in the solarium I see a lot of some sleepover
02:16girls here you both have grown into such brilliant and and beautiful young women
02:23making your way out there in the world thank you for bringing so much joy and
02:32spirit and energy to a life you had no voice in choosing and for making us proud
02:39every step of the way love you babe oh so please indulge me for a moment because
02:49I'm gonna take a little time to do something that I know my husband will not do
02:53today and that is to fully sing his praises
03:05Barack you gotta look at me
03:11you told me all those years ago that you couldn't promise me the world but you
03:16could promise me an interesting life and of course you outdid yourself and managed
03:23to give me both I know it hasn't always been easy but there hasn't been a single
03:29second through this experience that standing by your side hasn't left me in
03:36awe eight years in the crucible and not once did you melt from the heat not once
03:46did you let it harden you
03:51instead you used it to reveal your truest essence your stubborn optimism and
03:59unflinching courage your dazzling brilliance and unpretentious decency your
04:08ferocious work ethic and absolutely unshakable moral fiber
04:19and to do it all as a first and the higher standard that comes with all that
04:26the claims that a US senator and constitutional law expert wasn't
04:33qualified for the job the lies about your birthright your faith your patriotism
04:41the outrage when you stated the biological fact that if you'd had a son
04:45that he too would be black yet you were unflappable at every turn always focused
04:57always calm always looking at the long view tough how absurd it is to even
05:07imagine that you might have buckled under the pressure even once lashed out in
05:13frustration lost your temper
05:21how absurd it is to imagine that you might have done anything but make our
05:26family and this entire country proud
05:36no you you were too busy
05:49I'm not done y'all not done so much to say you were doing the people's work
05:59rescuing our economy expanding health care ending a war ordering the bin Laden rate
06:07saving an auto industry winning a peace prize
06:20keeping us safe from Ebola regulating the banks standing up for marriage equality
06:31listening to science and comforting an entire nation in the face of unspeakable tragedies and you did it all
06:41with such grace and class and cool that you made the hardest job in the world look
06:51like a walk in this beautiful park your mother to gramps you are a tribute to their
06:59love they are up there grinning and hugging today because you never forgot who you are
07:07and where you came from single mother working hard to get by and get an education and show her son
07:15the world
07:16grandparents who didn't have much but they had the perfect recipe to nurture your flame
07:23you never forgot the folks in the union halls and church basements here in Chicago
07:29where you first put your ideals to this test
07:32you never forgot all the voters you registered and students you taught and neighbors you organized
07:40you never fell for the temptation of a quick fix or an easy payday
07:48you never changed from that idealistic summer associate
07:52who showed up on that rainy day when we first met without an umbrella
08:00you always gave us the very best within you
08:04and in doing so you reminded the rest of us that we could too
08:12barack there are no words to express how proud i am of the way you showed up
08:18and continue to show up every single day
08:22it has been an honor to be by your side
08:27you have made me a better person and have given us all an example that we should strive to emulate
08:34and i hope you know
08:37oh there is truly no higher calling than that
08:42all right
08:44to all of you joining us today our invited guests
08:48and everyone listening and watching from afar
08:52the obama presidential center was created as a beacon of hope
08:57a monument to our unshakable values
09:00the ones my husband has exemplified his entire life
09:05equality
09:07empathy
09:08honesty
09:10inclusion
09:12fairness
09:14and especially during these anxious and divisive times
09:19it is so important that we remember that those values are not unique to my husband
09:25they are the same ones that your husbands and wives your parents and children your friends and neighbors
09:33exhibit and pass on
09:36every single day millions of people in this country
09:40wake up doing their very best to live decent and purposeful lives
09:46yeah we're all tested
09:48in one way or another
09:49and there are plenty of times we all fall short
09:55but deep down in our hearts and souls
09:58we all know right from wrong
10:02we know selflessness from greed
10:06righteousness from injustice
10:09we understand that we all rise and fall together
10:12that every last one of us
10:15is an invaluable contributor to the greatness of america
10:20and i'm talking about the workers living paycheck to paycheck hoping to give their kids a better future
10:27the teachers using their own money to take their students on field trips
10:33the business owners struggling to meet payroll but refusing to close their doors
10:39all those folks sweating over stoves to provide meals for their communities
10:45folks shivering in the freezing cold to deliver our packages
10:50picking up trash to keep our parks clean
10:53volunteers dedicating their weekends to coaching t-ball
10:58or directing the church choir
11:01or mentoring a child
11:05that's where the truth of this country lies
11:09not in grabbing as much as we can get for ourselves
11:14or knocking folks down to prop ourselves up
11:19but in the overwhelming goodness
11:23the relentless striving
11:26the quiet dignity
11:28that is inside all of us
11:31our greatest hope
11:33is that this center
11:36can reflect back just a fraction of that light
11:41that it can capture the beauty
11:44of who we all are
11:46no matter what we look like
11:48or where we come from
11:49or how much money we earn
11:51or how we pray
11:53or vote
11:55or speak
11:55or love
11:58it's why during our administration we threw open
12:02the white house doors to all sorts of folks who don't usually get to meet the president
12:08or first lady
12:10the families pinching pennies to send their first child to college
12:15the teenagers who know that a hot afternoon means the bullets start flying
12:20the military spouses and children serving and sacrificing just like their loved ones in uniform
12:29the native kids showing us that resilience and pride can never be stolen
12:36the 4-hers and ffa members with calluses on their hands from feeding livestock
12:43the immigrants proving what it truly means to be a dreamer
12:49these folks
12:52these folks aren't americans too
12:55they are america
12:58they are the beating heart of this country
13:01they are us and we are them
13:05and to ignore this simple truth
13:08to refuse to respect the contributions and experiences of people
13:13who aren't exactly like us
13:16y'all put puts us all at risk
13:19failing to see the humanity in all people puts us all on a slippery slope
13:26and once that slide starts
13:29there's no telling where it stops
13:32a dangerous precedent
13:34that flies in the very face of our faith
13:38and of the founding promise of this democracy
13:41democracy
13:42that all of us all of us
13:44are created equal
13:46that each of us
13:47is a child of god
13:50with inerrant value
13:53and no one
13:54and i mean no one
13:56has the right to sit in judgment of who's american enough
14:07and that's why folks
14:12we simply don't have the luxury or time
14:15to be cynical or complacent
14:18to wring our hands in despair
14:21to wait for someone else to fix the problem
14:26y'all hope
14:28is all we have
14:31because hope
14:32is the essential spark
14:35that lights the fire of change
14:38but hope
14:40is a choice
14:43whether or not we use our voices to speak up
14:46is a choice
14:49voting is a choice
14:52being a decent human being is a choice
14:54believing that we still hold the power to build a country
14:58that reflects us all
15:01is a choice
15:04the obama presidential center is a living testament
15:08to the power of choice y'all
15:10the historic example that millions of you
15:13who gave the world
15:15about what this imperfect democracy has
15:18strived for and achieved
15:20and an urgent call
15:22to go out there
15:24and do it again
15:26so i hope
15:28that when you walk through this campus
15:31and bring your children here
15:35you're reminded of the power of choice
15:38and
15:39the steady work of change
15:42the arduous
15:44unglamorous march up that mountain
15:48one foot after another day after day
15:51generation after generation
15:55but i hope also hope you fully absorb
15:59the elation
16:01of achieving something together
16:04you know that feeling when you clear the tree line
16:08and see a vista
16:10that takes your breath away
16:13a feeling
16:15that can never be erased
16:19and i know that can be hard to grasp right now
16:23when everything feels so upside down
16:27when fact and fiction run together
16:30when folks seek to stifle speech
16:32limit access to education
16:36devalue diversity
16:39erase the inconvenient parts of our history
16:43when our phones constantly buzz with the latest outrage
16:50so i hope that this place can offer
16:53a respite from all that
16:56at least for a little while
16:59i hope it can reignite the optimism and empathy and ambition
17:04that has always powered
17:06this country's greatest change
17:10so we want you to come here and put away your phones
17:15and talk
17:16and laugh
17:17and cry
17:19because you won't cry
17:21and make new friends
17:24get your hands dirty in my garden
17:28push your baby on a swing in the playground
17:32have a romantic picnic on the great lawn
17:37because that's the work of democracy too
17:41being neighborly
17:43taking care of public spaces
17:46having some fun
17:48enjoying each other
17:50shaking out of the isolation and division
17:53that have crept too deeply into our lives
17:58and to my fellow Southsiders
18:04i want you all to make this campus
18:08a part of your lives
18:11be inspired by the world-class art
18:16check out the books from our beautiful public library
18:20and bring them back on time
18:23drop some beats in the recording studio
18:25hit some corner threes at home court
18:28hold birthday parties
18:29jump start clothing drives
18:31host city-wide clean-up dates
18:34here
18:35use this campus to show off this place
18:38we call home
18:40this joyful place
18:44where marion and frazier robinson
18:46taught their two kids to dream big
18:49this hopeful place
18:51where an unknown guy with an unknown name took flight
18:56this stubbornly optimistic place
18:59where family after family scrapes and claws
19:02and laughs and dances their way to a better tomorrow
19:07that's what this has always been about
19:11barack and i have always said that this center is grounded in our stories
19:17but it has never been about us
19:21it's never been for us
19:24and it's going to be here long after we're gone
19:27so what it becomes
19:30and how it's preserved
19:32that work has to be done by all of us
19:35just like our democracy
19:38and thankfully you have shown the world
19:40what we are capable of
19:43you've proven
19:44that a lasting legacy isn't an award
19:47or a name on a building
19:49or a number of zeros in a bank account
19:53but the difference we make
19:55in one another's lives
19:58it's about seeing each other
20:00and showing up for each other
20:03and carrying each other
20:05when we're weary
20:06or faltering
20:08or losing faith
20:11that's how you build something that endures
20:14and that's what you all have done
20:16at every twist and turn of this extraordinary journey
20:20you have protected and proclaimed
20:23the hope that beats within the heart of this campus
20:27you've rekindled and renewed this untameable
20:30unpredictable and unbreakable democracy
20:34and i know that you all are going to astonish us even more
20:38in the months and years ahead
20:40because you all have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt
20:44that when we truly see each other
20:48when we strive to bring out the best
20:50in ourselves and one another
20:53oh there is no limit to how high
20:57we can go
20:58thank you all
