Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet reports the Panthers remain focused on re-signing 37-year-old Sergei Bobrovsky, but they may have to start considering who his potential replacement might be if his extremely high demand on an extension doesn’t come down. It appears his ask is as high as $42 million over six or seven years.

00:00I honestly am more stressed about something that is going to happen
00:05to our beautiful, lovely hockey team.
00:10And that is, what the hell are they going to do with their goalie?
00:13Because Sergey Bobrovsky, fresh off a $70 million contract,
00:19the Panthers just missing the playoffs,
00:22and Bob, not a great statistical year by any measure,
00:27but also we could all acknowledge this was a very strange Panthers season.
00:32And he is a two-time champion.
00:35He's about as reliable as it gets when it comes to the most intense games.
00:40We're also coming off a very weird Stanley Cup final run
00:45where we basically had a bunch of backup goalies
00:48that were fighting for the championship.
00:51A Panthers training camp backup just hoisted it.
00:54And after goals galore everywhere,
00:57he finishes it with a shutout to hoist Lord Stanley.
01:01By the way, has anybody seen anything with the Carolina Hurricanes?
01:04Or is it like just all Knicks have drugged it up?
01:07Because like, no parade, no post, anything.
01:12You know, the only thing I did see is I saw one picture
01:16with Rob Brendamore with his shirt off.
01:18And I'm like, my God, he's still put together.
01:19But other than, but still a jerk, still a jerk.
01:22He's a handsome jerk, but still a jerk.
01:24But other than that, I am very flummoxed as like,
01:28as any, like the Carolina Hurricanes just won the Stanley Cup
01:31and off into the ether.
01:33I haven't seen anything.
01:34I saw more, maybe this is just my algorithm,
01:36but I feel like I saw more of.
01:37Yeah, I was going to say it's probably just your algorithm.
01:38Maybe it is.
01:39Maybe it is.
01:39But I haven't seen anything with them.
01:41But anyway, I saw this story today on the Hockey Rumor Twitter account.
01:49And so then I went in search of it.
01:51And this was an article today from Nick Kiprios,
01:55who is a former player, hosts a very popular show up on Sportsnet.
01:59He's, you know, so he's hockey in the weeds, you know, Leroy?
02:02And so he did a hockey buzz column, you know,
02:06similar to as if he were Canadian Barry Jackson.
02:10And he put a note out on the Panthers and Bob's negotiations.
02:19And this is what he has to say.
02:21Now, mind you, Sergei Bobrovsky,
02:25we've known that he's been up for a contract for a year.
02:27The Panthers never extended him.
02:29He made a ton of money.
02:32He is going to be 38 right before next season.
02:35All right.
02:35He's 37 right now.
02:37Like you're getting the facts out there.
02:39Yeah.
02:41And there was what seemed like legitimate trade buzz around him
02:46at the trade deadline.
02:48Thus, my nervousness.
02:49I have felt like this is reaching a Bob Panthers divorce for the longest.
02:56Everybody who covers the Panthers says I'm a kook
02:59because I talked to my guy, Hockey Hornet, David Dworky.
03:02He goes, Bob wants to be here.
03:04I don't do.
03:04I know Bob wants to be here.
03:06Why would he want to leave?
03:08But I also think that I look at Sergei Bobrovsky,
03:13his accolades the last couple of years,
03:16and the other goalies who get paid in the league,
03:18what he's looking for.
03:20And he's not looking for more than he's getting,
03:22but he is looking for something respectable.
03:24So anyway.
03:26Can I just say this?
03:28You make the assumption that even though a player likes the position,
03:35he wants max dollars.
03:37And we just saw an NBA championship where a guy took less,
03:44a lot less, a lot less than Bob would have taken
03:49to make sure the team could put a team,
03:52the organization could put a team together.
03:54So let's not just discredit Bob and say,
03:57oh, they won't pay him or something like that.
03:59It may not be the case at all.
04:01I don't know.
04:02That's why I'm trying to,
04:05I'm just giving you my perspective on it.
04:07I'm going to give you the report because I've told you
04:10I've been nervous about this.
04:11Okay.
04:12And do with it what you will.
04:14All right.
04:15So Nick Kiprios reports, speaking of the Panthers,
04:19they remain focused on re-signing pending unrestricted free agent
04:24Sergei Bobrovsky,
04:26but they may have to start considering who his potential replacement
04:29might be if his extremely high demand on an extension doesn't come down.
04:34There are some suggestions that his ask is as high as $42 million
04:40over a six or seven years.
04:44Bob will turn 38 years old in September.
04:48So.
04:48So basically what he's trying to do is he's trying to give them
04:52a little relief by stretching it out.
04:56Right.
04:57Which I feel like he doesn't,
04:58he doesn't want the 10 11 million that goalies who have accomplished
05:03what he has are getting paid.
05:04Right.
05:05So that,
05:06so that's basically he's going to give them an opportunity to,
05:11Hey,
05:11figure out how you're going to word this,
05:13figure out how you,
05:14I want 40 million.
05:15I want 40 million.
05:17Figure it out.
05:18Right.
05:19That's a,
05:19that's,
05:20that's,
05:20that's the,
05:21that's the go away.
05:21Right now,
05:22like I think I'm going to give you a look,
05:25like some of the guys who get paid like six,
05:27seven,
05:28six,
05:287 million right now.
05:29Okay.
05:30All right.
05:30Cause the highest,
05:31let me ask you this before you mentioned the names,
05:34does their age matter?
05:37Oh,
05:37he's the oldest.
05:38He's the oldest.
05:39I mean,
05:39he's the oldest,
05:39but I'm going to give you,
05:40I'm going to give you some of the guys.
05:42Okay.
05:43You know,
05:44like he's right now.
05:45So if Igor Shosturkin is right now,
05:47the highest paid goalie,
05:49New York Rangers 11 and a half a year.
05:51Right.
05:52You got Kerry price.
05:54He makes 10 and a half.
05:55And then Bob last year was the third highest paid goalie at 10.
05:59Vasilevsky makes nine and a half.
06:01Connor Helly book.
06:02He makes eight and a half.
06:06When you get to like set,
06:08you got Otter in Dallas.
06:09He makes 8.2 Swayman in Boston.
06:12He makes 8.2.
06:14Drew Soros,
06:15no goals.
06:16I love that guy.
06:16No goals from Nashville.
06:19He makes 7.7.
06:22Phillip Gustafson from Minnesota makes 6.8.
06:27So like this,
06:28you got like Aiden Hall,
06:29Aiden Hall just played for the Vegas golden Knights.
06:32Tortorella wouldn't even look at him.
06:34He makes 6.2.
06:37You know,
06:38these are the guys,
06:39Jordan Binnington,
06:39who people have talked about his Panthers,
06:41a replacement for Bob.
06:42He makes six Spencer Knight.
06:45He makes just under six.
06:46So like,
06:48we can't look at this and say like,
06:49Hey,
06:50the base is Bob should get at least six a year.
06:53You know,
06:54like that's,
06:54that's gotta be the,
06:56even if these guys are,
06:58even if we're talking about like,
07:00he's older,
07:01he's still better than those guys by,
07:03by leaps and bounds.
07:06And from my perspective,
07:08like I've always thought like the sweet spot.
07:10And again,
07:10I don't,
07:11hockey contracts are a little,
07:13but I've always felt it'd be like four for 28 is like the sweet spot that
07:19everybody could be like Kumbaya on.
07:22But you know,
07:23I don't know.
07:23Hey,
07:23look,
07:24Bill Zito also is looking at this.
07:25I think he's like,
07:26Hey,
07:26look,
07:26other guys took discounts.
07:27Bennett took a discount,
07:29you know,
07:29Aaron Eckblad took a discount.
07:31I'm not sure I got a lot of money.
07:33Um,
07:34but you know,
07:35the guy that's kind of been the thing.
07:36You have the state tax.
07:37Everybody yells at the rooftop about.
07:39However,
07:40there's only one guy who is playing the entire game,
07:43who is between the pipes and is,
07:47you know,
07:47especially in those big positions,
07:49you had questions all the way through the Stanley cup championship about
07:53like who guys are going to start every single night because of how bad the
07:57goaltending was.
07:58And this is a guy who,
07:59you know,
07:59in the biggest moments,
08:00but yes,
08:01he is old.
08:01Now I will say,
08:02I will say though.
08:05Bob is not big.
08:06He is a psychotic worker.
08:09He does everything plyometrically.
08:11There's not a guy who does more in tune with his body.
08:15He is like a goalie samurai in the way he goes about this thing.
08:20So all I'm saying is,
08:23uh,
08:23I need Bill Zito to fix it.
08:24And,
08:25and I,
08:25I want him to,
08:26I want him to say,
08:27I want,
08:28I want,
08:28you know,
08:29let's not forget the goosies.
08:31Let's not forget goosies.
08:32Oh,
08:33okay.
08:33Oh,
08:34okay.
08:34The legend.
08:35Like,
08:35so I,
08:37I want them to resign Bob.
08:39So let's start there.
08:41Okay.
08:43But the,
08:44the question would be,
08:46okay.
08:47As an organization,
08:48you're trying to think how many years am I really going to get out of him?
08:52Three,
08:53four,
08:54three.
08:55I feel like we can get three more peak years of Bob.
08:58I think the way he works.
09:00Like,
09:01I think three more good years here as a former athlete.
09:05I'm going to just say this.
09:08It don't matter how much you put into it.
09:10Sometimes your body just breaks down.
09:12Well,
09:12Betchkin's still skating out there,
09:13putting up goals.
09:14I mean,
09:14not everybody's on the,
09:18Jerry Rice played forever.
09:20All right.
09:21Like everybody's not built the same way,
09:24but people are,
09:25is there anybody who worked harder than Cam Wake?
09:30Uh,
09:31no,
09:32no.
09:32And what happened?
09:33It just kind of,
09:35you just,
09:35it just goes like,
09:36I can't explain it to you.
09:38You're trying to put everybody in the same,
09:41you know,
09:41like,
09:42Oh,
09:42well he works out so he can play as long as he wants.
09:45It doesn't work like that.
09:46I went to Stanley Cups,
09:47but,
09:47but teams,
09:51teams pay on what you're going to do,
09:54not what you've done.
09:56And so while they will reward him with a new contract,
10:01they also have to keep in mind,
10:03okay,
10:05how many years are we be,
10:07are we going to be able to get of this because he's 38?
10:11And,
10:12and so maybe that's the conversation.
10:15I'm not saying Bob shouldn't be paid.
10:17I'm not saying any of that,
10:18but I'm saying that conversations that have to be had,
10:23you're just shrugging off the goosies and he works out.
10:26I'm not sure how organizations do business,
10:29but you're going to sit here and you're going to go and try and get
10:31heli book for,
10:32for a couple more years of extension.
10:34Right.
10:34And you're going to be like,
10:35Oh,
10:35he's 33 and we can get them into his late thirties.
10:38And like,
10:39it's like trading for James Harden.
10:40When you have D Wade,
10:42like,
10:42I just don't understand it.
10:43You know,
10:43like you have a guy,
10:44I understand.
10:45Holy book.
10:46It did a great thing for America.
10:48All right.
10:48It was a great,
10:49it was a great game against Canada.
10:50Props to him.
10:51One of the greatest saves you'll ever see in life.
10:53Wasn't the robbery,
10:53but it wasn't the greatest saves you ever seen in your life.
10:56You know,
10:56but,
10:57but I,
10:58I don't know.
10:58It just doesn't sit well with me.
11:00Like he's been a,
11:00he's been a playoff,
11:01by the way,
11:02also coming off a very down year for him.
11:04And he's also been a playoff dud his entire career.
11:06And the Panthers are going to sit here being like,
11:09we're going to go get this whale when you already have Moby Dick between the
11:13pipes.
11:14Again,
11:17organizations do not do the first thing that you're doing is that look at what
11:25he's done.
11:26Organizations don't think like that in any sport.
11:29It's like,
11:30how much can we get out of the next two or three years?
11:34Not,
11:35Oh,
11:35he's been great for us.
11:37Let's just keep paying him.
11:38They don't think like that.
11:39Why do you,
11:40why do you always bring that to the table?
11:42He's won two championships.
11:44Let's keep paying them.
11:45It's the most pressure packed position.
11:47No,
11:48again,
11:48I'm not questioning any of that.
11:50I'm saying organizations do not pay people.
11:54No matter how great a player has been,
11:57they're always looking at how much longer is he going to be able to perform
12:01like this?
12:02Thus,
12:03we reward him for that.
12:04Even though Bob's been great.
12:06I'm not even disputing that.
12:08Right.
12:10But they're thinking,
12:11Oh,
12:12if we pay him for what he's done,
12:16and then he gives us a year and a half,
12:18we're screwed.
12:19They're thinking about the future.
12:21You know,
12:22this,
12:22you got to wet his beak a little bit.
12:24You know,
12:24you got to have everybody else.
12:25Everybody else got a feel good deal off a championship.
12:28And because everybody got hurt and then,
12:31and then we had to plug the glass.
12:32No,
12:33it's not.
12:33You're not just talking to the glass.
12:35I just think you got to wet his beak a little bit.
12:36You know,
12:37nobody likes a dry beak.
12:39Again,
12:39he wants six years.
12:41Deserves it.
12:43He,
12:46so can I ask you a question?
12:48What?
12:49Why are you giving me minus one?
12:50When,
12:51when he wore,
12:51can I ask you a question when he wasn't minus one and he had a guaranteed
12:58contract?
12:59Hmm.
13:00You didn't say the other way.
13:03What do you mean?
13:04I didn't say the other way.
13:05You didn't say,
13:06Hey,
13:07he's not performing to his contract.
13:09Time to go.
13:10Yeah,
13:11you're right.
13:11I didn't say that.
13:12Cause I always knew it was going to work out with him.
13:16Bad example.
13:18No,
13:18it's not like there's,
13:22it works both ways.
13:24They gave him a guaranteed contract.
13:26He wasn't good for all of that contract.
13:29Hold on.
13:30though.
13:31He turned it around and was great.
13:34Okay.
13:35But he's 38 years old.
13:38Right.
13:39As an organization,
13:40they're sitting in the room,
13:42not thinking about how great Bob has been for the organization.
13:46Everybody's going to concede that,
13:49but they have to say,
13:51how much longer are we going to get this?
13:55If he falls off a cliff and they struggle because goalie play,
14:02everybody's going to say,
14:03why didn't you plan for this?
14:05Let me get this straight.
14:06You're going to go.
14:06They're going to say it.
14:08Hold on.
14:08Hold on.
14:08You,
14:09you spoke.
14:09Let me speak.
14:10You pay Brad Marchand.
14:12All right.
14:12You gave him a six year.
14:13What did they give Marchand?
14:14You remember what they gave him?
14:16No.
14:17Brad Marchand had been here for three seconds.
14:19Now he was excellent.
14:19All right.
14:20They don't win the second cup without him.
14:21He was awesome.
14:22Okay.
14:23But he's also old as hell.
14:24Six years.
14:25Six years.
14:26They're 13.
14:27I mean,
14:2731.5 million.
14:28All right.
14:29So he's getting like five a year.
14:30It's getting like five a year.
14:31Here's the thing.
14:31He's not a goalie.
14:32Not a goalie.
14:33All right.
14:34And second of all,
14:35look,
14:35I love Marshy,
14:37but if there's one person who looks like they're taking care of their body
14:39more than,
14:40than Brad Marchand,
14:41it's Sergey Bobrovsky,
14:42because we know how Marchand likes to party when he wins.
14:44And Bob was sitting at club 11 with,
14:46with a,
14:47with a seltzer.
14:50Again,
14:53you're making that assumption.
14:55And it doesn't health doesn't work like that.
14:57I think it does.
14:58We think just because a guy works out and eats well,
15:02that he's going to be able to play forever.
15:03And then whoop,
15:05he just falls off a cliff.
15:06That's how sports work.
15:07I don't know what to tell you.
15:09I do not know what to tell you that you think,
15:12because he eats well and works out and does plyometrics and all that.
15:16He can play as long as he wants.
15:17It doesn't work like that.
15:19This doesn't have anything to do with his accent.
15:21And I really wish people would stop saying that about me.
15:24Okay.
15:24This is my guy.
15:25He's been my guy forever.
15:27And it doesn't feel like it can be.
15:32It doesn't feel like I'm saying that we are so.
15:38So we attack organizations for signing older players,
15:43and then they fall off this cliff and they have no secondary plan.
15:48You have an organization that is considering,
15:52I don't even know what they're considering,
15:53but it must be taken into account.
15:56Obviously,
15:57obviously there's a discrepancy there.
15:59I mean,
15:59otherwise,
15:59you know,
16:00this wouldn't have dragged out as long as it is.
16:03Now,
16:04maybe Bob,
16:04you know,
16:05maybe Bob comes to a point where he goes,
16:07nah,
16:07do I want to go play for the LA Kings?
16:09You know,
16:10do I want to go play for whoever's going to offer him the legend bag?
16:14There's a saying in the hood,
16:15all money ain't good money.
16:17Like you can go and make more money,
16:20but at what cost?
16:21Right.
16:22At what cost?
16:23Now,
16:24let me ask you a question.
16:26Look at all the other guys on that team and where they are in their career
16:31that took less so they could go sign other players.
16:36Is Bob the one that should have more demands than them?
16:42Yes.
16:44He's the most irreplaceable.
16:47Other than Mark.
16:48Just find out that Barky was.
16:50Oh yeah,
16:50but Barky makes more.
16:51Barky's the highest paid player on the team.
16:56Barky's Barky,
16:57Barky and Barky deserve.
16:58And by the way,
16:58when Barkoff comes up again,
17:01he deserves that money.
17:02He's a legend.
17:03You're,
17:04you're,
17:06you're love for a player is getting lost by the reality of sports.
17:11And that's all I'm trying to have this conversation with you about,
17:15but you don't care because you love Bob and that's fine.
17:18But there's other conversations that as fans,
17:22you would be more pissed off if they paid Bob and didn't have a goalie
17:26because they paid Bob and Bob fell off.
17:29You'd be more pissed about that as an organization whose job it is to
17:34prepare for these things.
17:35How can you say that I would do that when I was the guy who wanted to pay
17:39Dwayne Wade?
17:40I wanted to pay Jimmy Butler.
17:41And that's why you don't have that job because there's other things you have
17:44to take into consideration.
17:46Every single time I've been right.
17:47Every single time.
17:48Because we got Dion waiters and then we paid him a four-year deal.
17:51And that didn't work out.
17:52And where's my Jimmy?
17:53What have I done with the Jimmy Butler money?
17:54What have we done with it?
17:55Nothing.
17:56Do I have Giannis?
17:57Do I have anybody?
17:58I don't even have De'Aaron Fox.
18:01Do you want him?
18:02Wait a minute.
18:03You.
18:03I don't know what the point is.
18:04I don't have anything.
18:05I haven't done anything with that money.
18:07Can I just,
18:08can I just tell you right now?
18:11If you had said that to my face,
18:13we would have to go to break.
18:16Why?
18:16We would have to be dealt with.
18:18You would really say we don't even have De'Aaron Fox.
18:21Are you really saying that to me?
18:22That's my point.
18:23We haven't done anything with the Jimmy Butler money.
18:25Nothing.
18:26Squat.
18:27We've been sitting here and they're hauling it away.
18:30Like they're hoping for crypto to bounce back.
18:33What are you going to do something with the Jimmy Butler money?
18:35You were so worried about.
18:37Oh,
18:38wait.
18:42Stop calling me an accent chaser,
18:44Miami LB.
18:44That's not fair.
18:45I'm not an accent chaser.
18:47I don't know what you're chasing right now,
18:49brother.
18:50I do not know.
18:51I'd like,
18:51you can't,
18:53there's no,
18:54listen,
18:55there's no reasoning with you.
18:56You guys,
18:57there is nothing that I've said that say you're wrong for feeling the way you
19:01are.
19:02But everything I said is right about how the organization has to go about this.
19:07Bill Zito is being a little floozy where he's going to go to hockey.
19:10He's done nothing wrong in the last four years.
19:13What are you talking about?
19:14A guy he just cut from training camp,
19:16won the Stanley cup.
19:23Boxed in.
19:26I mean,
19:28the Ravens got rid of me.
19:29Like it happens.
19:31You got to make,
19:32you got to make decisions.
19:34Don't say it happens after you say he's made no mistakes.
19:37But that was a mistake.
19:39Maybe he had two guys to fill in the same position.
19:41He chose Tarasoff.
19:43He chose wrong.
19:48Which by the way,
19:49he kept him around for goosies.
19:51How'd that look?
19:53Tarasoff.
19:54So now let me get this straight.
19:57Let me get this straight.
19:59We are now arguing.
20:01That he let other goalie go.
20:05I'm just saying you say everything.
20:07If you need it,
20:07if you need it are the goalie,
20:09then you would have less of an argument with Bob.
20:12Everybody has other goalie Leroy.
20:14Everybody has,
20:15everybody has them.
20:16Everybody has other goalie.
20:18That's how it works.
20:19And other goals sometimes end up.
20:21Other goalie is a dime a dozen.
20:23Well,
20:24if you're relying on the guy you want to pay,
20:26is that not an accurate assessment?
20:29Yeah.
20:29And plenty.
20:30So why are you coming to me with other goalie as an argument?
20:34Because you said everything he does is perfect.
20:36And what I'm telling you is.
20:36It's another goalie.
20:38He's like a kicker.
20:40He's,
20:40but he doesn't want his other goalie.
20:41He's going to go and he's going to,
20:42he's going to get the,
20:43this is why I'm saying he's a bit of a floozy.
20:45He's going to sit here and he's going to deliver us.
20:47Helly book,
20:48which is going to be cool for a lot of people,
20:49but not for me,
20:50because I'm going to tell you something right now about Connor.
20:52Helly book.
20:52He's going to come here with his gold medal.
20:54I'm going to tell you something right now,
20:55dude,
20:56he's going to have to do a lot of proven old Tobes,
20:59because I want to be looking at him.
21:01Like you're not Sergei Bobrovsky.
21:03Prove that you're Sergei Bobrovsky.
21:05Should I just say,
21:06can I just say what's crazy?
21:08We have,
21:09we,
21:09this is now the second sport we've had this conversation.
21:13You know what the conversation is in football is about backup quarterback.
21:18Like how could you not have a viable backup for tour?
21:22We've had that conversation.
21:23Sure.
21:25That's why two is no longer here.
21:26Cause we,
21:27it matter about the backup quarterback.
21:29Right.
21:30But if you're that concerned with a backup,
21:33a backup goalie,
21:36backup goalie.
21:37I'm not concerned with the backup goalie.
21:38You just said everything he's done is perfect.
21:40And I would say very much not.
21:41So it's a backup goalie.
21:43It's a reserve player.
21:44You also signed Jeff Petrie.
21:46That guy stunk.
