Trae Young has opted out of his $47 Million player option. What does that mean for the Wizards?
Transcript
00:00But by far the biggest news, and people think I'm crazy,
00:04I'm just pointing out possibilities, okay?
00:07Trey Young has opted out of the player option year.
00:11So he becomes technically a free agent, right?
00:14That would have paid him $50 million, $49.7 million.
00:18Now the idea is he wants to re-sign with the Wizards,
00:22like a three-year deal, maybe making less annually.
00:24So say that number gets dropped down to, I don't know,
00:27NBA contracts are crazy.
00:29Say that number gets dropped down to $35 million.
00:32I don't know if that's going to happen, Jay.
00:34I think all of the little talk we heard yesterday, all this works hand in hand.
00:40So that's my thought process.
00:44So the NBA ball knowers will tell you,
00:50Trey opted out so he can get more guaranteed money.
00:53So say he signs, I don't know what the dollars are going to be.
00:56I'm not going to pretend.
00:57Let's just say it's three for $120 million, and he's making $40 million a year.
01:01In the NBA, that's immediately $120 million guaranteed in the bank, right?
01:05Yeah.
01:06So that's why he would opt out to then guarantee himself another $70 million.
01:11I can process that, no problem.
01:14But we are hearing growing smoke around Darren Peterson to Washington.
01:20Like, that is undeniable.
01:22And when you talk to NBA, did you see the John Wall video?
01:25Yep.
01:25Like, if I was in charge at number one, I would take Darren Peterson.
01:28I would take Peterson, but I have A.J. second.
01:30Dude, I don't know his level of basketball expertise,
01:33but Laramie Tunsil got asked yesterday who he would take at number one.
01:37Who do you say it?
01:38Darren Peterson.
01:40So it's an interesting situation.
01:42Josh Robbins is a friend of the program.
01:44Josh Robbins covers the Wizards and the NBA for the Athletic.
01:47Josh Robbins tweeted this last night, 10.52 p.m.
01:51I was locked into Colombia, Uzbekistan, until Trey Young got my attention.
01:54And you know my attention could change rapidly.
01:57Oh, quickly.
01:58Josh Robbins tweeted out,
01:59It's not a surprise that Trey Young will decline his player option for the upcoming season
02:03and seek a multi-year deal in free agency.
02:05It's not a surprise at all.
02:06But it would be a surprise if he doesn't remain with the Washington Wizards.
02:10The Wizards have the clear inside track there.
02:13Okay.
02:13I replied to Josh, who again, listens to the program, friend of the program.
02:18I said, on some level, doesn't it open the door for Peterson at one
02:22and not bringing Trey back, or am I crazy?
02:25His reply, no, you're not crazy.
02:27But it's unclear to me that Darren Peterson is considered a point guard by the Wizards.
02:32Peterson is more of a two-guard, one-guard than a pure one-guard.
02:35He's one of two candidates for Washington to draft at number one.
02:39But the Trey Young news is not connected to the Wizards' draft plans.
02:43Young and Peterson could coexist easily.
02:45Okay.
02:46Could they?
02:47We'll see.
02:48I mean, you don't know until they get on the court.
02:50But I'm sure when you look at Trey, though,
02:52people talk about he's the best facilitator out there.
02:54So, if Peterson is an extremely good shooter, Trey could get the ball to him.
02:59He's an assist king.
03:01Totally.
03:02So, you know, you still can get that done.
03:05And then two guards on the court like that, both of them can handle the ball.
03:09That could be a plus.
03:11Dude, and, I mean, you've also got Trey Johnson who's a shooter.
03:15The more shooters you have in the National Basketball Association,
03:18the better off you are.
03:19I just, I guess this was always the plan.
03:23Maybe they thought they'd get the extension done ahead of time.
03:26I just don't think it's as simple as, like,
03:28if Miami was really interested in Trey Young already
03:32and they're going to swing for Giannis,
03:34but we don't know if they're going to get Giannis,
03:37I just, everybody's like, yeah, of course he was opting out.
03:40He just wants more cash, but he's definitely coming back.
03:42I don't know that he's definitely coming back.
03:44Yeah, no, definitely.
03:44They're nothing.
03:45You know, maybe opting out because he can get more money, yes.
03:48But definitely coming back, no, I'm not going to go there.
03:51You don't know that.
03:52That's not a fact.
03:53I agree with that.
03:54Like, there are more unknowns now being introduced.
03:58And I also wonder, and I'm curious if you wonder about this,
04:02if Trey Young ends up somewhere else,
04:05I feel like that puts some pressure on Anthony Davis
04:11and what he's going to do.
04:13I think Anthony Davis –
04:14I don't think if Trey Young ends up somewhere else,
04:16it puts pressure on Anthony.
04:17I think Anthony Davis has been playing his cards the whole time.
04:21Anthony Davis has already told you,
04:23I want to see how things are going to go.
04:24He has not spoken into anything to say,
04:27I'm definitely going to be here or not.
04:28So whatever happens with him, I think it's him.
04:31You know what I mean?
04:32I don't think he has gave us any indication that he wants to be here
04:36or he definitely wants to go somewhere.
04:38He just wants to be in the best spot.
04:40But when you're going to be getting about $120 million over the next few years,
04:43you lean towards where that money is guaranteed already.
04:46I agree with that.
04:47What I'm saying is I do think Anthony Davis wants to play for a winner.
04:51And I think if he's on this team and you've got Trey Young and Davis
04:56and the number one pick and Saar and Riley and Keyshawn, right?
05:00Like if Trey Young's on this team, this looks like a playoff team in some capacity,
05:05whether that's the play-in or the four seed, whatever that may be,
05:08it looks like that.
05:09If Trey Young ends up somewhere else –
05:11See, his words were he wanted to play for a contender.
05:15Contender is not just making it to the play-in.
05:18Totally.
05:20It's just the levels of intrigue continue to pile up here would be my thought.
05:26I want to open the phone lines up.
05:27If people think I'm crazy, that's fine.
05:29Well, I think they know that.
05:31If people think I'm crazy specific to this Trey Young conversation,
05:34that's what I'm saying.
05:35Not just life in general.
05:37I think – I don't think this is as done of a deal as everybody –
05:42the amount of fluidity in this situation is significant.
05:46And I don't think you could just be dismissive of that.
05:49Like, ah, dude, it's a done deal.
05:51He just wants more cash.
05:51He's going to sign back here.
05:54Because these other teams that are desperate to be relevant –
05:57like the Heat don't operate at the bottom of the East.
06:01The Heat consider themselves an elite franchise.
06:03How old is Pat Riley?
06:05Look that up for me.
06:06Look at Pat Riley.
06:07It's got to be 80, right?
06:08It's close to it.
06:09Dog, Pat Riley.
06:10Still, the smoothest ADO you're going to find.
06:12Totally.
06:12But Pat Riley's not here for playing tournaments, especially at 80.
06:17No, no, no.
06:1881 years old.
06:19Yeah.
06:19Pat Riley wants to win.
06:20Pat Riley's smooth, dog.
06:22Yes.
06:23But, like, the culture –
06:24Pat Riley can come to college and co-and-be.
06:25Let me get that.
06:26Yeah, for sure.
06:27I'm sure he'll make it.
06:28Pat Riley would look good at college and co-and-be.
06:31I just – I don't think anything is as simple as folks are making it out to be.
06:35It's not.
06:36We'll open the phones on that.
06:37800.
06:38Every fan always make it that simple and that they know more than the people that are talking about it.
06:42You don't.
06:43Because the people that are really talking about it, the people that are making the decisions don't really know what's
06:47going to happen.
06:47Agreed.
06:48You know, that's the thing.
06:49Will and all those guys, they don't know exactly what's going to happen.
06:53So, what makes you think Kevin from down the street know who he's talking about?
06:59You know what I mean?
07:00800-636-1067.
07:02800-636-1067.
07:06I'm just curious.
07:08This Trey Young thing, like the ESPN tweet last night, I believe it was Mark Spears that broke that news.
07:16Yeah.
07:16I'm kind of surprised it wasn't Shams, but Spears is obviously a really locked-in dude.
07:21Like, don't tell me that this is all totally expected and not a big deal when the ESPN tweet makes
07:28it seem like it's a massive deal.
07:29Like, this was the graphic, right?
07:31Yeah.
07:31And so, I just, for me, man, I think we got to.
07:36You know, my buddy Ben, he wants to always, he's like, y'all didn't see this coming.
07:42You didn't see it coming either, dude.
07:44You don't know a damn thing about basketball.
07:47It's amazing when people see stuff, do they act like they knew.
07:50If he had known, you'd have been told me because everything you know, you tell me.
07:53Every time he gets some information, you want to share it.
07:55So, you didn't share that.
07:56So, you know what I mean?
07:57You didn't know a damn thing.
07:58I think, specifically, my question is, I asked this maybe last week or two weeks ago.
08:05Do you think there's going to be fireworks, or are they just going to make the number one pick and
08:10it's going to be simple?
08:11I lean more and more towards fireworks.
08:12I don't know what that means, but.
08:14I think whether they make it or not, the fireworks have already started.
08:19Because all of these different stories on a daily basis is what brings the attention to it.
08:25The fireworks have already started.
08:27Whether it's going to be a big explosion or not is a different question.
08:31Well, and maybe there's some level of.
08:33Are they going to be sparkles?
08:34Are they going to be the actual.
08:36Like 4th of July joints.
08:38Right.
08:38The Rockets red glare.
08:39Are we going to be one?
08:41You know what I'm saying?
08:42Maybe just getting the number one overall pick is fireworks in and of itself.
08:45It is.
08:46I just, I really wonder, the Trae Young thing coming at this juncture with all of the conversation
08:53around other teams wanting him and what's going to happen with Giannis.
08:59Like, what is the deadline with Giannis?
09:01It's probably Tuesday.
09:04Don't you, do you think Giannis is a Milwaukee buck on Wednesday morning?
09:08I don't know.
09:09I think some stuff, man.
09:11Giannis has already shown them he wants to go.
09:13He's ready to get out of there.
09:14I've had enough culverts.
09:15And in the NBA, when you see the Stars do stuff like that, normally something happens.
09:21Because there are teams out there right now that know if Giannis is on their team, they
09:24have a chance.
09:25Well, and dude, I mean, you go a little further.
09:29LeBron is in play.
09:31LeBron's in play for the Warriors.
09:33Would Anthony Davis be?
09:34I'm going to move a little past that one because I think, I think that old thing, Father
09:38Time, he wins in that.
09:41Like, LeBron, listen, I know you can love LeBron all you want.
09:45LeBron is on that Lindsey Vonn right now.
09:47He's on that downhill slide.
09:49He can't carry a team no more.
09:50Don't let the LeBroniacs hear that.
09:52I don't care what they hear.
09:53He cannot carry a team right now.
09:55But I think that's why he wants.
09:56He's been great for a long time.
09:57That's why he wants to go somewhere where he doesn't have to carry it.
10:00So if you go with Steph and whatever else, Golden State's going to a mask.
10:03You watch LeBron play.
10:04LeBron knew he couldn't carry a team this year or last year.
10:06But LeBron still, once he gets on the basketball court, still believe he is, what's the country
10:11song?
10:11I can be as good as I was once as I was.
10:14He think he can be as good as he was all the time, and he cannot.
10:17And this is not a knock.
10:18This is telling you the truth.
10:20I still think I can run a football, but I know I can't go out there and do it.
10:24I probably could do it against some people, but I'm going to go out there and I'm going
10:27to try to make a move and something's going to go the other way and something's going
10:30to go the other way.
10:31You know, you get to the point where you can think what you want.
10:34Your body will tell you, it's over, bro.
10:37I hear you.
10:38Now, there are reports that the Giannis thing could drag all the way into the summer,
10:42into July.
10:44We'll take it.
10:45I don't know.
10:46It's a fascinating time.
10:48Do you want it to carry it into July?
10:50The Giannis stuff?
10:51I want all of it because it's more good stuff to talk about.
10:53I'm just saying.
10:54Maybe.
10:55I just want to know.
10:56I want some clarity on the Wiz.
10:58I want to know what the Wiz are doing and how that's going to look.
11:02That's what I care.
11:04Like, Giannis ain't coming here.
11:05So, I'm not overly concerned about Giannis, about LeBron, about any of it.
11:11I want to know what this Wizards team is going to do, and I want the Wizards to continue to
11:18think big picture.
11:19And I believe Michael Winger, Dawkins, like the staff they've assembled, that's how these
11:23guys operate.
11:24And I look at the Thunder as good as they are, and I recognize they didn't win the title this
11:28year.
11:28But I look at the Thunder, and they still have extra first-round picks.
11:33Yes, yeah.
