The same area of Louisiana devastated by multiple hurricanes in 2020 was in the path of Arthur, but fortunately impacts from the first storm of the season weren't too severe.
Transcript
00:00You can call me disheveled because this storm is sloppy.
00:03It's a wet mess, and it's been one of those long days here in Louisiana.
00:06It was bright and sunny just a few minutes ago in Lafayette,
00:09and obviously we've got that rain from Arthur moving in from the south.
00:13Skies turned dark, and we've got rain moving in right now to Lafayette
00:16with more of that coming in.
00:18The impacts really haven't been all that bad here in Louisiana so far today.
00:24Most of the rain off over the Gulf,
00:27and the gusty winds right down by the coastline.
00:31540 mile an hour gusts earlier today.
00:33Take a look at the video we sent in earlier from the Holly Beach area.
00:37You can see angry-looking skies with the heavy rain falling down over the Gulf
00:43and a rough surf, some rip current concerns down there,
00:46but these are pretty rural remote areas.
00:49So the locals who live down there, and there's not many of them,
00:52a lot of them are shrimpers, crabbers.
00:53They work in the oil, gas, energy industry,
00:56and they know that these storms can mean business,
00:59and they know to stay out of the water.
01:00So we didn't see anybody getting near the water in coastal Louisiana.
01:04That's a good thing today,
01:05but there were some red flags and rip currents out.
01:07And another piece of video that we have was near the Cameron area.
01:13Around high tide when that was coming in,
01:15obviously when you have repeated rounds of rain over several days,
01:19you're going to see things like this with a storm like Arthur pushing in some water toward the coast,
01:23some coastal flooding, trucks splashing around.
01:25But again, that's to be expected when you have a tropical storm in Louisiana.
01:30Now, we did spoke with a local guy named Tab.
01:33He lives down in the area.
01:35He tells us he is grateful that so far with this storm,
01:38at least where he lives in the Cameron area,
01:40the impacts have been manageable, not all that bad.
01:43He says he and his neighbors take every hurricane season seriously because he and his friends,
01:48they are still recovering from the supercharged 2020 hurricane season that destroyed his home.
01:562020 was hard.
01:57I think that's the time we got hit with two hurricanes six weeks apart,
02:00and it devastated us.
02:03But, you know, it's a great community.
02:05I mean, people came together, and they brought in supplies and food,
02:09and everybody got through it.
02:11And it was a testament to the people down here, the good, good people down here.
02:16Yes, sir.
02:17Are you thinking you guys are going to be lucky this is all you're going to have to do with
02:20this year?
02:20I hope, man.
02:21I can tell you, we do a lot of praying.
02:23Yes, sir.
02:24Yep.
02:25So, Tab says he's just grateful for his neighbors.
02:27He loves life down along the Gulf Coast.
02:29But this is just part of it during hurricane season.
02:32It's something you've got to be aware of and live with.
02:34He lives in an RV, just steps away from the Gulf Coast line.
02:39And his trailer was tossed around and ripped apart during the 2020 hurricane season.
02:45So, he lost his home.
02:47He's now in another RV.
02:49He says, Jeff, he loves life along the Gulf Coast.
02:52He's got his fingers crossed, hoping that this will not be a rough hurricane season for him and his neighbors
02:58in the Cameron, Louisiana area.
03:00But, again, it's June.
03:01We're talking about Tropical Storm Arthur, the first storm of the season.
03:06He says he's prepared.
03:07He's ready for the season.
03:08He's hoping this is going to be it for him.
03:10But we've got a long way to go when it comes to hurricane season in the Gulf Coast.
