Willard and Dibs unveil their dream Warriors offseason, which includes keeping the 11th pick and making a trade with the Pelicans.
Transcript
00:00You're going to make the pick?
00:02Or are you going to be everything for Steph?
00:06Come on, Mike.
00:07Yeah, I mean, I think everything's on the table.
00:09We'll look at it all.
00:10But, you know, I feel pretty confident that we will, you know, draft a player.
00:14Does that mean we move back, we move up, or something like that?
00:17Sure, but I just feel like as strong as this draft is,
00:19we should probably come out of this draft with a player.
00:22Unless, you know, if something falls into our lap trade-wise,
00:25a veteran guy that we really think can make a difference,
00:27we'll certainly look at it and potentially do it.
00:30But this is a really good draft to be in, especially at 11.
00:33So, you know, we don't want to overlook that.
00:34That would be a fun exercise for Grandy and Pasta.
00:37I don't know if you guys want to do this.
00:39Can we count up?
00:40I got, like, what feels like we're about 15 to 20 Mike Dunleavy sound clips
00:45on my board here.
00:46Okay.
00:47How many of them start with, yeah, everything's on the table.
00:52It's on the table.
00:54It's all on the table.
00:55And then he answers.
00:56And I want to see how big this table is.
00:58Because the only thing not on the table is trading Steph Curry.
01:02It's like an Italian dinner at Grandma's house.
01:05Huge.
01:06Yeah, it's a big table.
01:07It's a giant table, and everything's on there, including moving up,
01:10moving back, picking an 11, trading Draymond, trading Jimmy,
01:15keeping both, extending Steph, LeBron James, Anthony Davis.
01:19I have access to the script, the transcript that they sent.
01:24Wait, what was the script?
01:25The transcript.
01:26They always released it after, you know?
01:27I know.
01:27I thought he meant before.
01:29Oh.
01:29I just, you know, control F, searching for on the table.
01:34It's mentioned three times in the interview.
01:36Once was by a question, though.
01:37So the number of times he actually said on the table is only twice.
01:40Okay.
01:41All right.
01:42According to the transcript, at least.
01:44I wonder about keep our options open and look at all things.
01:50Or you probably said it in a number of different ways, but that's where you're going to be, you know,
01:54six days ahead of the actual pick that needs to be made.
02:00I think I'm warming to your guy, Yaxel.
02:03You think so?
02:04Well, I wasn't cold on him before, but I listened to everything today.
02:09I read everything today.
02:11And I decided that there is a perfect Warriors offseason.
02:17It's controversial, though.
02:19Okay.
02:19It's very controversial.
02:20It will be potentially unsettling for some.
02:23Wow.
02:24Does it involve pods getting the max?
02:26It does not.
02:27Okay.
02:28Because that would be unsettling and controversial.
02:30Yeah.
02:30That's actually, like, later offseason, and I'm kind of whatever on that.
02:35I don't even think that that's controversial.
02:37He's going to get an extension, and fans are going to think it's too much.
02:41Right.
02:41No matter what that is.
02:42But he should.
02:43Like, we've got over this.
02:46You want him on your team.
02:47I don't know what the number is, but, yeah, you want him on your team.
02:52Yeah, and that's all, like you said, way down the road.
02:55The order of operations is make the pick in six days.
02:58Draymond makes his decision June 29th.
03:00Free agency starts around July 4th.
03:03That goes through, and then you get to Steph in August and pods after that.
03:07Okay.
03:07Two of the three things that I'm about to say I believe are going to happen.
03:12One of them is really, really hard.
03:14Okay.
03:17Unlikely, dreamy, and controversial.
03:19Wow.
03:20Okay.
03:20All right.
03:21Here's the first thing.
03:23Next Tuesday night, with the 11th pick in the NBA draft, the Golden State Warriors select
03:32Yaxo-Londenborg, Michigan, forward.
03:37Love it.
03:37Okay.
03:37And I've been advocating that.
03:39Yes, you have.
03:39Going back to probably the national championship game or even beyond.
03:43No, pre-tournament.
03:44Yes.
03:44Or at least in tournament.
03:45Right, because I watched a ton of college hoop this year with my little system and my pencil
03:50and my piece of paper.
03:51Give everybody a little rundown of Yaxo.
03:53First of all, he is one week older than Jonathan Kaminga.
03:56Correct.
03:56So we can start with that.
03:57And there's a tiny bit of Kaminga stuff that we can talk about down the road.
04:02We'll hold that.
04:04Londenborg played three years at JUCO.
04:06Then he played at UAB for two years and then one year at Michigan.
04:11Okay.
04:11Won the natty.
04:12When he went to Michigan, he became a 37% three-point shooter.
04:16He's six foot nine.
04:18He's pretty bulky.
04:19He's versatile.
04:20He's a good passer.
04:21He's got a high basketball IQ and he can defend.
04:23Athletic stretch four.
04:25Yes.
04:25Okay.
04:25All right.
04:28Draft, Yaxo, Londenborg.
04:30All right.
04:31That's number one.
04:32Now, this next one might be the third one to actually happen, but let's go ahead and move
04:40it up to second on the list.
04:41It's simple.
04:43It's clean.
04:44I do think it's going to happen.
04:46The Golden State Warriors re-sign to a one-year deal worth, pick your number, 17%.
04:55$15 million.
04:58Kristaps Porzingis.
05:00He stays.
05:01Yeah.
05:01I think he stays.
05:03And when he called Rick Celebrini, the head of the medicals and the training, when he called
05:08him the GOAT, that told me that if he decides he's going to play, then he'll play here and
05:13whatever the number is, they can make it fit.
05:15And he probably will come out and play between 50 and 60 games and you get what you get and
05:21you don't get upset.
05:22Now, this next one, to borrow an analogy that's probably a little bit too well-traveled and
05:30maybe a little bit too old, but I sort of feel like the Golden State Warriors and this
05:37player that I'm about to bring up are becoming like Ross and Rachel.
05:41Like, stop flirting for this many years.
05:44Will you just, for the love of God, find a way to get together?
05:47You clearly want to, so stop with all of the flirtation sensation, okay?
05:54Like, let's be done with this and just do it.
05:57Cha-ching!
05:59Um, it involves Draymond Green opting in to this year's contract, about $27 million, but
06:09not declining it and getting an extension.
06:12And I think that this will be difficult for him.
06:16I think it'll be difficult for the organization.
06:19It'll be difficult for some fans.
06:21Um, but, the deal I would pitch to the New Orleans Pelicans is to, at long last, get the
06:29player you actually want, and that is Trey Murphy.
06:33That's the guy you want.
06:35You don't actually want Anthony Davis, Giannis LeBron, or Kawhi Leonard.
06:41All of these people who are well past 30, some well past 35, and some past 40.
06:47You actually have signaled this offseason to your fan base that you finally, at long
06:55last, realize you have got to get younger.
06:58And Mike Dunleavy talked today, um, I thought a really interesting piece of his conversation
07:04with Steini and Goo.
07:06Goo asked him about the Steph Curry injury, and he said, and I'll paraphrase,
07:10First of all, they feel very good.
07:13Mike ran into Steph today, he said.
07:15Who's looks great.
07:16He's having a great offseason.
07:17We feel very confident that he will be healthy this year and play a lot of games.
07:22However, injuries happen, and if that were to happen again this year, the Warriors need
07:31to be ready in a way that they weren't last year to handle that.
07:36Um, okay.
07:38All right, here it is.
07:39This is exactly, um, this is exactly what he said with regard to the Steph Curry question
07:45from Goo.
07:48Yeah, I mean, I saw Steph today.
07:49He's in great spirits.
07:51Um, he's having a great offseason, physically doing really well.
07:55Look, we're super confident he'll be back next year in a healthy way and play a ton of
08:00games and do all that.
08:01But, like anybody, like all teams, we have to prepare for injuries.
08:05Guys miss games.
08:06It happens, and, um, you know, if it does happen again next year with him, uh, we've
08:11got to do a better job of holding it together, um, than we did this past season.
08:15And I think that's sort of our thought process.
08:17But Steph will do everything he can to, you know, to stay healthy, uh, to be the best version
08:22of himself.
08:23And, uh, that's, that's what we expect until, uh, things are different.
08:26Okay.
08:27So how do you go about, as he put it, holding it together better if Steph's not there?
08:32And by the way, this all, what if it happens before Jimmy is back?
08:35Who the hell is able to go out there and get you 20 to 25 a night?
08:38Well, who's able to go out there and actually play NBA basketball at somewhat of a decent,
08:45consistent level?
08:46Because Chris Dapps, if you bring him back, he is a guy who's had a checkered injury pass.
08:51Al Horford probably still won't play back-to-backs if he decides to pick up his player option.
08:56And you have a lot of young guys.
08:58Will Richard, he can play, but he's not going to lead you with 20 a night.
09:02And if pods is your leading scorer on a Stephless team, you're probably not going to win a ton
09:07of games.
09:08No disrespect to young pods.
09:10So you not only need people who can go out there and score at a high level, but you need
09:14human beings who can play minutes of NBA basketball.
09:17Let me read to you straight from Anthony Slater's piece with regard to Trey Murphy.
09:22Pelicans wing.
09:23That's a big word here.
09:25Warriors need, need wings.
09:28No Butler, no Moody.
09:30They need wings.
09:31Pelicans wing Trey Murphy could be more obtainable in this transaction cycle, league sources said.
09:39Murphy is a player the Warriors front office has circled for years.
09:43As a prime wing who fits a need, the Kerr system, and at age 25, accomplishes the goal
09:51of getting younger.
09:53The Pelicans have clung to him tightly, but league sources say New Orleans has been signaling
09:59a desire to jump into the first round of next week's draft.
10:03The Warriors have the 11th pick and control of their future firsts.
10:08So, here's the one rub.
10:10The indication there is that the Pelicans might be willing to give up Trey Murphy for the 11th
10:16pick in the draft.
10:17Right.
10:17But he also mentions their future firsts.
10:20I wonder if the Pelicans' willingness to part with Murphy suggests that they know they're
10:24nowhere near ready.
10:26And therefore, what they're interested in is clearing their books quicker.
10:30Remember, Murphy's got three years left on his deal at between $25 to $30 million.
10:36Um, and, um, this would accelerate that process if they got into a deal with the Warriors and
10:44therefore they could get out from that money a lot quicker.
10:47And what are they going to want in return?
10:50Sure.
10:50Draft capital.
10:51That's what they're going to want.
10:52But the dream scenario for me is that the Warriors keep this year's pick and still get
10:57Trey Murphy.
10:58Very unlikely.
10:59I get it.
11:00But it's my dream.
11:01Right.
11:02So, you're allowed to have it.
11:03I'm allowed to have it.
11:04You can dream it.
11:05And from what I was reading, the Pelicans are very motivated to get up into this year's
11:10lottery.
11:10I get it.
11:11As everyone is because the draft is so good.
11:13And if Lendenborg does wind up landing at 11, that's a pretty damn good player in my
11:18opinion at 11.
11:19And there's other players who will go after him, 12, 13, 14, who are still good.
11:24But the Pelicans are looking at this and they absolutely are trying to reboot it.
11:28They won 21 games two years ago.
11:30They won 26 last year.
11:32Their books are a mess when you've got Murray and Zion.
11:36Jordan Poole's expiring this year.
11:38Trey Murphy's probably the one guy that they would really want to keep the most.
11:41But if you could get the number 11 pick or two firsts in the future, you might think
11:46about doing it.
11:47I love what you said there with the or.
11:49Now, there is a fly in the ointment and it's the Jordan Poole's on the team.
11:52So if you're the New Orleans Pelicans, would you be willing to clear your books by bringing
12:00in his adversary?
12:01I don't know.
12:02I don't know exactly how to handle that.
12:04Maybe the Pelicans are able to move Poole to a different team.
12:08But for me right now in this moment, the absolute dream deal.
12:11And I say this with the utmost respect because, you know, I'm not one of these people that
12:17has been trying like hell to get rid of Draymond Green for the last three years.
12:21I still think he's got a ton of value.
12:24I still am entertained by the guy.
12:27I still understand why he frustrates people.
12:30But we've arrived at time.
12:33You have to get younger.
12:35And if you're not wanting Draymond deep into the future in a way that guarantees that he's
12:41going to finish his career as a warrior, then I'm willing to go the Klay Thompson route.
12:45And I say Draymond Green and two future firsts for Trey Murphy.
12:51Money lines up.
12:52It gets the Pelicans two future first round draft picks and accelerates their $30 million
12:58that will clear off the end of the books at the end of this year instead of three years
13:02down the road.
13:03I don't know that they would do it.
13:05Maybe not to somewhere, maybe even closer to probably not.
13:09But if you're asking me right now the dream offseason for the Golden State Warriors, and
13:15no, I did not say this makes them some sort of an immediate contender.
13:18But I think all things considered for the Warriors, youth, being a better basketball team
13:25this year, Yaxo-Londonburg, Kristaps Porzingis, Trey Murphy, you give up Draymond Green and
13:33two first round picks that are down the road, whether it be 27 and 29, 27 and 30, whatever
13:40it may be.
13:41Those are the three moves that, to me, make this a home run of an offseason for Golden
13:47State.
13:48And I think that that is, it is kind of a big dream because, you know, New Orleans most
13:52likely would want a pick now, especially with this good of a draft.
13:56And I'm looking at their roster and their contracts.
13:59And if I'm running New Orleans and I look at Zion, he's got two years and 87 million left.
14:05Poole's expiring at 34.
14:07You've got DeJounte Murray, who's two and 63 million if he picks up his option in two years.
14:12And then you've got Trey Murphy only making 87 over the next three years.
14:17And he is 25.
14:19And he, I would say, is the best of those four players.
14:22You could argue Zion, but he doesn't stay healthy.
14:24And so if I'm looking to build around somebody and I'm realizing that I'm not going to be
14:31good this year, maybe not for two or three years, that's the guy I'd want to keep.
14:35I agree with you.
14:36And so I would be looking for more of a King's ransom, which would involve the 11th pick
14:40this year and a future first and maybe a pick swap as well.
14:44And I'd be open to it.
14:45Yeah, that's a lot.
14:47I'd be open to it.
14:49I would be open to it.
14:51I think that what you want is a great young player than Trey Murphy.
14:54Well, if you want a great young player, then draft him in 2021 when you passed on him, not
15:00once, but twice.
15:01Correct.
15:02Twice.
15:02Yeah, but that's, you know, that's hindsight and that happens.
15:05Who knew?
15:06Well, who knew?
15:07I think some in the organization had an inkling.
15:11Maybe.
15:11More like Franz Wagner.
15:13Yeah.
15:13Had Wagner and Murphy instead of Kaminga and Moody.
15:17I mean, let that set for just a second.
15:20There's not an organization in the world that doesn't have those though.
15:23Hindsight is 50-50.
15:24I know.
15:24The draft is, it's a crapshoot.
15:28And yeah, they got, they've gotten beaten, you know, on the draft before.
15:34Sure.
15:35Sometimes it was just the wrong player.
15:37Sometimes it was philosophical.
15:39You know, I think that's what happened in that draft is they got kind of sidetracked philosophically.
15:46They, they were thinking more long-term as opposed to short-term and they probably should have
15:50been thinking short-term as opposed to long-term and, you know, they got kind of wooed by the
15:57athleticism and I get it.
15:59Yeah.
15:59And I get it.
16:00But the whole thing came up snake eyes for them to where what they've got now out of that
16:05entire draft is they have a damaged, nice young wing that they kind of like, but he's
16:12super, super hurt and they have an opportunity to re-sign Kristaps Porzingis.
16:16That's what they got out of that draft.
16:18That sucks.
16:19Yep.
16:19I mean, that sucks.
16:20It's not good enough, especially when you see Wagner go on to be really good and get
16:24the max.
16:25And now Trey Murphy, the third is looking like a very good wing player, the exact kind
16:31of player that you needed then and that you need now.
16:34So you can't have your present day actions dictated by your past mistakes.
16:38And that leads to where if you like the player and you think you can get him for a couple
16:44of picks and dream on green, and that works for you, then you may want to go ahead and
16:48pull that trigger because when his contract's up, Steph Curry will be 41 and probably gone.
16:53And he could be a cornerstone for your team.
16:56It's just, that's the guy.
16:59I don't know exactly how they can get them.
17:03I don't know if New Orleans is actually willing.
17:06They've flirted with being willing before, according to reports, but not really.
17:11This report suggests maybe they're more willing this time.
17:15But yeah, if what they're motivated by is to get into this draft, I'd look at it.
17:21I don't think I'd look at it for anyone else.
17:23And the reason I say him and only him is because he's 25.
17:27He's 25, and you're right.
17:29The number is three more years, and it's super manageable.
17:34Like, it just, it fits.
17:37You don't even have to be, we always talk about how in this new age of the CBA, NBA teams
17:44don't
17:44really want to have more than two people making the big, like, north of $35 million a year.
17:50Well, he doesn't need to be one of them.
17:52He doesn't need to be one of them.
17:54Steph can be one of them.
17:55Whatever Jimmy's slot turns into in the future can be another one of them.
18:01And then there's Trey, who at times can play like one of them, but he's not paid like one
18:06of them.
18:06And you can get him for his age 25, 26, and 27 season, all for under $100 million.
18:14Yeah, under market value.
18:15That's the guy.
18:16Under the value that he performs at.
18:18And so I'm looking at their books, New Orleans.
18:20You talked about the Warriors books in two years, and they have 18-plus million on the books
18:25as of now.
18:26Steph will certainly add to that when he gets his extension.
18:28But New Orleans, not this upcoming season, but the one after, they've got $150 million
18:33right now on the books in the form of Zion, DeJounte Murray, Trey Murphy, Herbert Jones
18:39is making 21.
18:40And so if they want to clear the books, well, one of the moves I think will be Jordan Poole
18:46this year, probably at the deadline.
18:48Well, and he's expiring.
18:49That's why.
18:49And expiring at $34 million.
18:51So you might look to get rid of that and take on somebody else's expiring and get a pick
18:56or something.
18:57Yeah, you could do that.
18:58Or he could just expire.
19:00Right.
19:00Like you could just let him go.
19:01You can let him go.
19:02Yeah.
19:02And the other one I have my eye on is Zion Williamson, who's played six years, and when
19:07he plays, he's phenomenal.
19:09He doesn't fit with what the Warriors do.
19:11I'm not advocating they should make that move instead, but if you're New Orleans and he's
19:15making 42 this year and then 44, he might be somebody that you try to get some interest
19:20in as well.
19:21Because they've got to clear the books as much as, you know.
19:25That's the dance I would do.
19:28Yaxo and Trey.
19:29Hey, that's the happy dance.
19:33Yeah, you've got a 25-year-old wing and a 24-year-old wing.
19:37Slash power forward.
19:38Right.
19:39But I think what he showed at Michigan last year, he showed a greater ability to step
19:44out and shoot the college three.
19:46I think that's the way the NBA is now.
19:48Right.
19:49Absolutely.
19:50That's what you want.
19:50He's also got some toughness.
19:52I'm not saying he's going to lead your team in rebounding, but, you know, that's all
19:57right.
19:57Like, he's a big boy.
20:00Right.
20:00He can handle that spot.
20:01And that's one of the biggest things they lacked this year was wing defense as much
20:05as, you know, wing offense as well.
20:07And you would bring in two guys in their mid-20s.
20:10So when Steph does miss games and Steph won't play 82, he could play 72.
20:15That would be awesome.
20:16I think 65 is a fair number to look at for Steph just based on load management and minor
20:23ailments that may crop up.
20:24I mean, I'm just, again, I'm throwing this out there because I still do see a little
20:29bit of, I don't even know if this is the right word, but there's a little bit of a split
20:33or
20:33a chasm or whatever in what I hear all the Warriors brass talking about.
20:37They keep saying, we want to get younger.
20:42We need more players who will play back to backs.
20:46We need to handle injury better.
20:48They keep saying all of those things.
20:51But then in the next sentence, they're like, yeah, so we're looking to bring back Chris
20:55stops and Al and Draymond and then, and then Steph.
20:59And I'm like, well, that that's the opposite of that.
21:03Right.
21:03But Al and Draymond, you have no choice.
21:05They have player options.
21:06You are the choice.
21:07If, if you want to get on the phone, start trading people.
21:10Sure.
21:10All expiring deals.
21:12Everybody's an expiring deal.
21:13So is Jimmy.
21:14But it takes some work to go out there and get younger because these guys can just walk
21:19in the door with crutches and say, Hey, I'm playing.
21:22I guess what I'm saying is I really do.
21:24And this would make sense.
21:25I think the Warriors have a hand it's face down and it should be like, how stupid would
21:31it be to come out to a press conference and tell everybody exactly what you're hoping
21:36and what you're thinking.
21:37You can't do that.
21:38You wouldn't do that.
21:39But I'm until I know otherwise, I'm going to feel like there's some sort of
21:44a secret card they're about to play because if not, they're saying they want to get younger
21:49and more physically reliable.
21:52And then the next sentence, they're like, yeah, we're just bringing everybody back a
21:56year older.
21:57Right.
21:58Like that doesn't add up.
21:59No, it doesn't add up.
22:01But, you know, as he famously said, trades are hard.
22:04And so to make a trade and it may, you know, honestly, I would feel like the price would
22:11go up and up and up.
22:12If I'm New Orleans, if you don't want to give me the number 11, how about three first
22:17round picks?
22:18I mean, that's I mean, they don't want to mortgage the future.
22:21That's kind of a mortgage.
22:23No.
22:23But again, my problem with giving up all those future picks is when your core is all 38
22:27years old.
22:28But if you get Trey Murphy, now your core is not all 38 years old.
22:32Right.
22:33But that's what I'm saying.
22:34Post Steph, you're likely going to be a lottery team more often than you have been.
22:38You might be.
22:38So you're giving up lottery picks.
22:39You got to deal with that then.
22:41There's ways to get him back.
22:43There's ways to get him back.
