The debate over who the Wizards should draft at No. 1 has gone from an ember to a raging fire that's only going to heat up more as the draft inches closer.
Transcript
00:00The Wizards need to be at their best next Tuesday night.
00:04When the Commanders were drafting 7th overall in the NFL draft back in April,
00:08I thought there were a number of players that could really make sense.
00:10I thought there was a path for Sonny Stiles to land in Washington.
00:13He did.
00:14But my only homework assignment for Adam Peters was to nail the pick.
00:18Whoever you take, they've got to be the right name.
00:19They've got to be the right.
00:20Now the Wizards have an even greater homework assignment
00:23with the number one overall pick in a loaded draft.
00:27Yeah.
00:27A loaded draft.
00:29And the homework assignment is to nail the pick.
00:32I got to catch up with monumental basketball team president Michael Winger
00:36to ask about the pick.
00:38The biggest camp is A.J. DeBansa, the BYU star.
00:42Just what do you think of his game?
00:44Well, if we're going to talk about all these guys,
00:45I would tell you that they're all very similar in one regard.
00:47They're super talented.
00:49Yeah.
00:50This crop of guys at the top of the draft is supremely talented.
00:54They would go, you know, 2 through 6 in just about any damn draft.
00:59We'd be lucky to have any of them.
01:01They will all develop into great players.
01:03They're all great young men.
01:04We're going to get a chance to get to know some of these guys here in the next couple weeks.
01:07They're highly skilled.
01:08They were well coached pre-college.
01:10They're well coached in college.
01:12They have an insatiable competitiveness, which is really attractive.
01:18They all have great size.
01:20It's just, I mean, it's a great, great draft to be at the top.
01:25So you'll have meetings with all these guys, right?
01:28And probably dinners, like some social stuff, some workouts, all of that.
01:31But is there one attribute above others that you look for in what you think a number one pick should
01:37have?
01:39That probably is a function of time and place.
01:42We're in Washington, D.C., and so our place matters.
01:46Our fan base matters to us.
01:48Somebody that when our fans come to the game or tune in to watch, they can resonate with that athlete.
01:53They say, that athlete represents me.
01:55That athlete is a good human being.
01:57He takes care of other people.
01:58He goes out and he works his butt off every day.
02:01He has no quit.
02:02Other than that, they have to be leaders.
02:06It's really hard to pick that high in a draft and come with the expectations and not be a leader.
02:13And guys can lead in different ways.
02:15They can lead with their voice.
02:16They can lead by example.
02:18But we look for that.
02:20So they look for leadership, B.
02:22And they look for somebody that kind of wants to be the face, right?
02:29They want somebody that is willing to take all that on.
02:35Having just watched the finals that we watched, I want Jalen Brunson.
02:43I want that mindset, which is all about ball.
02:47All day.
02:48Every day.
02:49It's all about winning.
02:50There is something to the fact that Brunson has won on every level he's been.
02:55Won titles.
02:56Yeah.
02:57Like, obviously there's not a player like that.
02:59And I'm not suggesting that they have to go with Boozer because that Duke team made it to the Final
03:05Four or whatever that is, right?
03:06That's not my suggestion.
03:07But I'm not concerned if you are good in front of the cameras or –
03:14And say the right stuff.
03:15No.
03:15Like, you know what will matter most is if they're good and they win ball games.
03:21100%.
03:22And DeBonza seems like the kind of guy that is good with the cameras and is able to, you know,
03:30like he did the videos.
03:32Maybe that was from the lottery talking about wanting to come to D.C.
03:35And he's done some interviews.
03:36They know what to say, bro.
03:39Peterson seems much quieter.
03:40I don't know that, but he – I don't know that I've heard him talk, frankly.
03:44Yeah.
03:45I don't know if he's done any podcasts or whatever.
03:47Hey, you got introverts.
03:48You got extroverts.
03:49You got people that talk a lot.
03:50People that don't talk a lot.
03:51You got people that see a camera and they light up.
03:53You got people that see a camera and they get shot.
03:56The ultimate things are coming down to how good they can do that.
03:59How can they play basketball.
04:00Yeah.
04:00And just hope they're just not some ass.
04:04You know what I mean?
04:04Yeah.
04:05Let's just hope that they're a good dude.
04:07And if that happens, you go and you move with it.
04:10But too many times people look at the wrong stuff that make them light guys.
04:15First of all, I care about them playing basketball.
04:16So there's something interesting happening in Washington.
04:20And we know the Anthony Davis situation where he maybe at least initially seemed lukewarm on coming to Washington.
04:26But Trey Young is in on D.C.
04:29And think about this in the draft.
04:31We saw Ace Bailey did not want to go to Utah and he wanted to come to Washington.
04:36Alex Saar wanted to come to Washington.
04:38These were top draft prospects.
04:41And the biggest situation right now seems like Darren Peterson wants to come to Washington.
04:48Yeah.
04:48And I think there's a legitimate argument.
04:51I want to open it up to the phone lines.
04:52800-636-1067.
04:54800-636-1067.
04:57Do you think Darren Peterson has the higher upside for the Wiz over DeBonta?
05:04I don't know that.
05:06Just what he just told you, though.
05:07It's time and place.
05:09What do they think they need more?
05:12Do they think they need a wing like him, like DeBonta?
05:16Or do they need a guard that they feel can do the things that Peterson does?
05:20Because you can be in one position where that guy can make all the sense in the world and in
05:26another position where he doesn't.
05:29So what is Washington really looking for?
05:32With the story yesterday about Trey Young possibly being traded and people wanting to trade for him,
05:37if that happens, then I think that they may be leaning towards the point guard.
05:42You get what I'm saying?
05:43So you have different things that make one of those guys become even more attractive for that team.
05:50My thing with Peterson, I think Chase Hughes might have posted this.
05:53I don't remember who posted the video from the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.
05:59But he's a pure shooter.
06:04Like, I think, I believe, I don't know if I have these numbers right.
06:08Maybe Dubby can look them up.
06:09But the Draft Combine, the three-point shooting workout, I believe it was 18 threes from all over the arc,
06:15right?
06:17And I think he made 15 of the 18.
06:19And it was fast.
06:21And it was like his release was fast and pure.
06:25And I, there is obviously space in the NBA for dominant wing players.
06:31But dominant wing players in the NBA are facing way better defenses than they were in college.
06:38But shooting translates.
06:41And I just, I don't, I also, I think Peterson will be a plus defender.
06:51Dubance is a big fella, but I don't know that he will emerge as a plus defender.
06:57There, there's no, there's no wrong answer here, I think.
07:01Like, whoever they draft next Tuesday night, we're in.
07:05Like, we're excited about it.
07:06There you go.
07:06But I continue to circle back.
07:08And maybe this is oversimplification, right?
07:10And maybe Utah, frankly, isn't interested in, in what it would require to get to Bonsa.
07:17But if you can, however you grade these prospects, if, if one is a 96 and one is a 94,
07:24but you can get the 94 and some other stuff, because Utah just has to have them,
07:30that, to me, continues to look like a dream scenario.
07:33I'll say that from the beginning.
07:35From the beginning, if you can still get a person, they got one A and one B.
07:41You can still get one of those ones and extra stuff, why not?
07:47800-636-1067.
07:49800-636-1067.
07:52The Darren Peterson smoke continues to grow.
07:56Do you think it's going to be DeBonsa?
07:57Do you think it's going to be Peterson?
07:59Do you think the Trey Young possible trade conversation means that it's Peterson?
08:05And ultimately, the decision Winger and Dawkins have to make is,
08:10who has the highest upside?
08:12Who is it?
08:13We're taking your calls.
08:14800-636-1067.
08:17It just, I'm curious what the betting markets are at.
08:23Because I know in the NFL, that stuff tends to swing pretty wildly.
08:27I don't know if we can bet on this already.
08:32I bet we can.
08:33Let's go to the phones, though.
08:34Our guy Mark is in Landover Hills.
08:36What's up, Mark?
08:36Mark, what do you think of this Darren Peterson situation?
08:40Well, hey, guys.
08:41Top of the day to you.
08:43You too, bud.
08:44I think that it's overblown as usual, like B says and you say, JP.
08:49I think they're going to go by the information they've collected with their scouts
08:53and through their years and their acquaintances and their relationships, man.
08:57And I think that they also, like you've been saying, JP, and B too,
09:01that, man, you've got to be open to a trade.
09:03If somehow this year somebody's offering enough meat to where you're going to get
09:09two first-round picks, you've got to make that trade because the draft is that
09:14well-worded and your team is already that well-worded.
09:17And let's just say you could get Cameron Booser and Acuff, B's man and my man.
09:25How could you turn that down?
09:27Or even if you could get picks and Acuff?
09:29Man, I think people need to wake up and see what B's been saying,
09:33man, that, man, you're six feet and over, you can be in the clover.
09:38Appreciate you, Mark.
09:39Seems like your phone cut out there.
09:41The betting markets are saying DeBatsa to go number one is minus 400
09:45and Darren Peterson's plus 300.
09:48That is significant action saying it's going to be DeBatsa at one.
09:52And we know lots of things.
09:55This is a television show.
09:57You want to drive eyeballs to the NBA draft.
10:00Intrigue at number one helps that intrigue, helps those eyeballs get there.
10:06And it's sometimes you've got to forget everything you hear.
10:10I always say this about the NFL draft.
10:12Forget everything you hear from the end of the college football season to the NFL draft.
10:16And just remember the players you watched in college.
10:19Remember what you saw on the field.
10:21In this case, it's on the court.
10:22DeBatsa was fantastic.
10:24We're taking your calls.
10:26Darren Peterson, man, he wants to be a wizard.
10:28Do you want him to be a wizard?
10:31800-636-1067.
10:33It is Beamish and Finley.
