Transcript
00:00i'm the voice of your mommy marlins uh excellent job uh calling the games this year right here on
00:06wqam jack mcmullin joining us there on the program from philly what's going on man how are you
00:11how we doing uh tim raines montreal expo and chicago white sock he was a white sock
00:16yeah yeah yeah well done yes that's it keep in mind um baseball for me as a kid
00:22and i grew up with will clark so knew his family and played in same little league fields or whatever
00:31but that was it i mean i had a couple of guys who went to my high school that i
00:36think
00:36one guy's a scout or he's in a front office and that's ronald maroney um but other than that uh
00:43baseball in new orleans was not like big now do i have this right did will clark and palmero
00:52play together in college like isn't that like the best college baseball tandem we've ever seen
00:57um well how about this when i took my recruit trip to lsu i was gonna play um baseball also
01:04and my uh
01:06my guide was was uh albert bell but back then it was joey bell yeah so yeah they had a
01:15pretty good
01:15baseball team but uh yeah it will clark was i i mean we remember him at the park we'd be
01:23playing
01:23at the park and his dad would be throwing back bat in practice and they did it forever
01:31jack is it a uh is it a crime if auto lopez is not an all-star this year
01:37absolutely i i personally like listen tons of bias baked into this take but uh i think it's a crime
01:44if
01:44he's not starting at shortstop for the national league um but obviously you know that's a fan
01:49vote and and we can continue to help out marlins.com slash votes there's your plug this morning but uh
01:55no i mean i i think it's criminal if he's not going to the all-star game you have to
01:59think he's a
02:00shoe-in to be a reserve but i would love to see this guy start i any way you look
02:04at this argument he's
02:06the best shortstop in the national league right now that's fully healthy i can hear the argument
02:09for ellie de la cruz in cincinnati if de la cruz was not dealing with a hamstring thing for the
02:15last month he's missed a month auto's playing every day it seems like he's got a multi-hit day
02:20every day i was doing this yesterday i mean this guy's played like 72 games i think 30 multi-hit
02:27days
02:28and 14 with no hits like he has more multi-hit days than zero hit days and he's playing good
02:34defense
02:34now i know is a little shaky in the first month of the year or so but auto lopez to
02:38me is the most
02:40complete package of shortstop in the national league right now the the marlins could have
02:45two maybe three all-stars is that max myers uh
02:53and maybe edwards maybe maybe what would you think you think of if like what's realistic as far as
02:59reps to have because they've been playing such great baseball that's going to get you some good
03:03buzz going into all this but realistically what do you think uh i mean auto's probably the most
03:07obvious but if somebody was to join him who do you think it would be jack i think it'd be
03:12meyer i based
03:13on how meyer is thrown the last bit like it's 15 starts without a loss he's the only qualified
03:18pitcher in baseball with a zero in the loss column so he's also thrown to a mid two zra i
03:23i think the
03:24conservative guess is two my realistic guess is three you get one of hicks or edwards there and then my
03:32like
03:32bullish hope would be four where you get otto meyer hicks and edwards all to philadelphia it's tough
03:39and the hicks one like he's top five in major league baseball and rbis but i mean you've got a
03:44couple of guys like baldwin is coming off the shelf right now and baldwin in atlanta is going to be
03:48getting a fan vote it seems like and then hunter goodman in colorado has 20 homers so it just seems
03:53like
03:54that catcher situation could be kind of pushing hicks out of that conversation but liam can get hot in a
04:00blink um and then edwards like it's it's really good second base in the national league right now
04:05you got terang you got lao in pittsburgh so there's some competition there but you have to think meyer
04:10and lopez are headed to philly what do you make of this month so far because i think the thing
04:16i found
04:16impressive about it is these guys got a lot of adversity thrown in their face with the pitching
04:21injuries and man they really haven't batted that would have been an easy place for them to really fold up
04:28and they haven't so i guess what is what have you what have you found to be the reason
04:33or or just mindset of this team that they when they face losing a yuri and they lost jansen junk
04:40and
04:40they're having to go with bullpen guys and tyler phillips is to step up like to be at this spot
04:45i think
04:45is pretty damn impressive right now yeah to be honest with you dude like i i told steven during marlins
04:50on deck
04:51yesterday he asked you know is this the way you thought the winds could come together over the course of
04:5612-13
04:57games and i said no honestly i didn't think so if you were to tell me that at the end
05:02of may
05:02you were going to lose yuri perez and junk and you were going to be down to two and a
05:07half starting
05:08pitchers like tyler phillips is still in his buildup i would have said okay they're not going to have the
05:12best staff era in baseball over the course of three weeks in june or two weeks two and a half
05:18weeks
05:18whatever it has been allegedly today's june 16th so that's two and a half weeks in this month so far
05:23but
05:24uh that's that's a good tally on the calendar for me but um yeah i mean listen they're the best
05:28pitching staff in baseball this month and i was not expecting that when you're relying on sandy and
05:33meyer and then i don't know we'll see in the rotation but tyler phillips has been awesome i know
05:38gusto had a rough one last night but gusto was really good against arizona last week too and then
05:42these bullpen days man they're working the bullpen is becoming one of the more underrated bullpens in
05:49major league baseball and i think clayton mccullough deserves a heck ton of credit for
05:54just putting the right guys on the mound at the right time like it's always the right time for
06:00michael peterson when you see him come in it seems like it's always the right time for bender when he
06:05comes in um and then you're going to go fairbanks in the ninth and fairbanks has looked better over his
06:10last couple of outings so it's been fun to watch them pitch their way to this because i thought if
06:15they
06:15were going to win 10 of 12 or 10 of 13 they were going to hit their way to that
06:18but they're pitching
06:19their way to that i gotta tell you i owe clayton mccullough an apology because i was getting
06:25irritated by how he was snatching pitchers in and out and changing pitchers and like we we would come
06:31in the next day and go what is he doing he had 70 pitches and we may have had we
06:36may have had some
06:37prop bets to that so so but but when you see it like he's making and and i think this
06:46is part of
06:46when a manager has success right it seems like everything he does it it works i i think i sometimes
06:54get annoyed because you know they always mention the word i hate and and i guess i'm old school just
07:01watching a uh a manager smoke a cigar and and have a gut feeling but analytics right lefty righty this
07:10that that if you're a good pitcher does it matter like let's go yeah you know i i will tell
07:17you um
07:18and i've long had this thought that umpires are a lot like offensive linemen where the best umpires
07:24in baseball are the ones you never talk about right like you've got a great left guard like the reason
07:29the left guard for you know they call it like i'm thinking of quentin nelson right now like there's a
07:33reason he got 60 million dollars or 80 million dollars because nobody talks about him over the
07:38course of 60 minutes and then you realize oh wait he didn't allow a single pressure like that's kind
07:43of how i feel about managers right now where it's like the best ones are the ones you don't talk
07:47about
07:47and it's funny because it fits with the captain goes down with his ship cliche where it's like when
07:55you're on this downswing everybody wants to point a finger at somebody and then when things are
07:59going well it's like oh but look at all the players performing right now it's like sometimes
08:02they're hitting the right buttons too and it's fun um you know it's cool because the marlins are very
08:07um new school analytically driven there is also plenty of gut feel i can attest to that firsthand i i
08:14know clayton mccullough has this thought out internally and he's making quick decisions in the
08:19midst of games and i think that guy does a heck of a job and really excited that that he's
08:24you know
08:25kind of getting this hot run of form from the fish right now so i heard you guys talking about
08:29this a little bit on the broadcast yesterday with tyler phillips so he is ditching the slapping and
08:34he has a new method can you because we've been talking about this for a little bit since he's
08:38moved to the starting line we're trying to figure out what is he gonna keep doing it is he so
08:42he's
08:43abandoning the slap yeah it was a little bit of like um trial and error for him i guess or
08:48just
08:49figuring out what works best for him because he was he was slapping and coming out of the bullpen for
08:54his
08:54first start and then he was slapping and coming out of the dugout and they were like hey we'd prefer
08:58if he came out of the dugout but you can't slap every inning like that was kind of a phillips
09:02prerogative he was like if i slap every inning i'm gonna be concussed by the end of this so um
09:06because
09:07like they're real slaps i i thought at the beginning when he started doing that like midway through last
09:12year i was like oh this is a bit and then you would zoom in on his face and you
09:16see like a red handprint
09:18i'm like oh my gosh he's actually doing this right now huh um now i don't think he's doing that
09:23but it's classified info like he's got this poster and he doesn't want to share with the media and he
09:29looks at like this poster when there are two outs in the half inning when he's going to go back
09:33out so
09:33i guess he's just finding a way to flip the switch um i don't know what that is but allegedly
09:39it's not
09:39slapping himself in the face anymore it's it's this poster hanging in the tunnel uh right behind the
09:44dugout i was about to ask you like where is this is this you have a binder like what the
09:47hell you know
09:48somebody's gonna find out what that poster is of course yeah of course i gotta go to the bathroom
09:53take a photo yeah i gotta i gotta we gotta figure this out like what is this i love i
09:59love a guy
09:59who's got strange quirks and tics but that is something like look he's been impressive i think
10:03that's the thing is you gotta it's such a different thing you gotta amp yourself up and you have this
10:08wrestling persona but then you have to cruise through a game where there's more ebbs and flows
10:12there's got to be a different adjustment for him yeah a hundred percent man and like i think what
10:17he's trying to do is get it a little subdued like daniel moskis the marlon pitching coach mentioned to
10:24him he would like him to effectively clock in and clock out for each half inning where it's like you're
10:28not you know pent up and angry the entire time you can do that when you're throwing an inning or
10:33two
10:34but when you're throwing five it's just like not a good way to live but there are guys that you
10:40know
10:40can kind of tap into that over the course of their start and like i think about skeins in pittsburgh
10:45paul skeins i remember his rookie year and even last year was ripping like shots of honey in between
10:50every half inning like he was just keeping the sugar up um like there are things that you can do
10:56and
10:56some of it could be placebo effect but at the end of the day man like he's gonna figure out
11:01what makes
11:01him tick over the course of a start and he's up to 80 pitches and he's looked really darn good
11:05doing
11:05it too you got any weird superstitions like during a season are you keeping anything like
11:11even as a broadcaster you keeping the mojo going you got anything going on so total broadcast dork
11:17thing for you here um i for so we've got 162 games uh last year i probably did it like
11:24100 times this
11:25year i'll probably do it like 80 times but whenever i feel like i don't have all of it there
11:30vocally
11:31i take two halls cherry cough drops and i put them in like a plastic bottle of water shake it
11:37up
11:37dissolve it and between every half inning i take a little sip and it's like you're drinking a cough
11:42drop and that's what i got for you is it uncouth these days like back in the day you know
11:46you had
11:47these guys who would just rip shots you know like the the whiskey would keep the voice strong like is
11:52as as coming up as a young broadcaster would do they did they did they take that out of the
11:57game like
11:57you know bob euchre style where you're sitting there with the the body because you just you know
12:03like it's just old school mentality baseball i mean no one's ripping cigarettes in the clubhouse
12:06anymore but like is that is that beaten out of broadcasts these days uh yes uh and i won't say
12:12unfortunately or fortunately but after this i'll put together a list of everybody that i would get in
12:16trouble with if i did that and i'll shoot it your way but i would assume some of them would
12:20be the
12:20odyssey people it's like we can't have this happening right now but uh you know what talk to me in
12:2450
12:24years and and we'll see if the harry carry uh cycle comes back in baseball i mean bunt is coming
12:29back
12:29so why can't why can't the uh the the beer in the uh booth come back it does it does
12:35do good for your
12:36voice though like i had my buddy we were doing the we were doing a weigh-in for fighting and
12:40he was
12:41really like freaking out about his voice and he's like doing the tea and all this type of and i
12:45have
12:45this mentality jack tea sucks all right nobody likes tea you know you just do it as like a professional
12:50thing you think it helps your voice but i told him i'm like toddy baby i'm telling you dude i
12:55told
12:55him i said hey you're going up there you got to get this crowd ready for this way and go
12:58go rip a
12:59shot of whiskey beforehand and you're gonna be good he goes my god that worked i'm like of course it
13:03works sometimes the old school method works hot time hot time my grandmother we used to go over
13:10my grandmother's house with the cough all the time she said what's wrong i just something like
13:14the old baby let me make you a hot toddy he put the honey the shot of jack squeeze a
13:20lemon
13:21and like yeah and all of a sudden everything feels good right it's not just that little headache is
13:27gone and all that i hear you what do you throw this coated real nice with the honey oh perfect
13:34what
13:34are you binging on the road like what do you uh what is the the go-to entertainment for yourself
13:38when you're when you're trying to wind down from baseball you're watching that love island what do you
13:42got going on so my fiance um my fiance lives in pittsburgh she's in a residency program so it
13:48was it was nice when the team flew from pittsburgh to philly i stayed back i just spent that extra

13:57my feel for
13:58each of the characters and i feel weird calling them characters because they're there for the right
14:02reasons and they're there for love um until a hot new bombshell i don't know about kenzie
14:09they're really there for love i don't think kenzie's there for love no kenzie doesn't seem like
14:13she's there for love you know who you know who really grinded my gears was uh was corbin i i
14:18can't
14:18figure out his vibe man nobody can nobody he seems like ai he doesn't seem like a real human
14:24yeah so so my fiance called him chat gp corbin and i was like that's kind of fun so no
14:30it is it's
14:31crazy is the players watching love island is this a buzz among some of them are they all trying to
14:36catch it on the road i'll ask um you know i know a couple of them were watching euphoria as
14:41that came
14:41to a close and i was watching euphoria i grinded that and it was like ripping the band-aid off
14:46seasons one and two i thought were really good and then season three it was like this is awful but
14:50i'm
14:50glad it's over in a minute i didn't watch the ending yeah didn't even watch the ending it just do
