00:00sort of set the scene for us because screw worm it feels like something that is still making its
00:05way into the consciousness people are just learning what it is there's a lot of concern
00:08that it's going to jump from livestock into companion animals but when it comes to what
00:14we're talking about with screw worm a lot of people have uh some hard memories of the avian
00:19flu and what that meant for this nation's chicken flock in particular what are you seeing so far
00:25when it comes to screw worm and what this means for the u.s cattle supply yeah thanks for the
00:32opportunity katie and a real call out to secretary rollins secretary kennedy this has been something
00:38we've been preparing for since november of 2024 a long time it has been and and has been a consistent
00:47problem in latin america we've been working with this in mexico for some time and i think to all
00:55your viewers this is something that can be managed this is something that can be treated for good
01:01animal health this is not something that is going to impact the quality and the safety of the food
01:07supply in no way and the usda has taken the right interventions to slow this by spreading flies that
01:15actually reduce the population and that that process is working i would say this is easier to
01:22manage than it is to actually contain we are going to see some of this spreading this was expected
01:27but i do believe that the cattlemen the animal health industry and the government are working
01:33very closely together and we're confident that we're going to be able to manage this and we're
01:39also going to be able to sustain the health and the well-being of those animals and i know that's
01:43what the cattle industry is focused on and the animal health industry right now so easier to manage
01:49then contain uh certainly interesting to phrase it that way jeff and i do wonder you know what this
01:55means for elanco specifically bloomberg intelligence was out with a report that you know you think about
02:01elanco and your competitor zoetis that this could benefit your portfolios but when you have a situation
02:07like this you know screw worm uh coming up and really causing a lot of concern as you say you've
02:12been
02:13working on it for a while but when you do have these moments i mean what does it it take
02:17to mobilize
02:18on your side to make sure that you have the drugs that you know you can sort of send and
02:23uh help the
02:24government with addressing the problem yeah our focus right now is uh not on uh on the business as
02:32much as taking care of our customers the cattlemen uh across this country pet owners as well as working
02:39very collaboratively with the industry just like in mexico we're going to ensure that we've got this
02:43supply and we're confident we've got a large portfolio of products that have been approved
02:48and even conditionally approved and accelerated approvals another call out by the usda so that the
02:53cattlemen have what they need to treat the disease you can't have a vaccine here uh to prevent it it
02:59is
02:59for treatment and so we have and ensure that on a cattle operation they're doing three things they're
03:04monitoring for scratches wounds anything that could be susceptible and looking for any screw worm that
03:10may exist and then there's the management it's protocols around fly and tick control on the farm
03:16and then mobilizing good communication good collaboration lots of people and i can tell you
03:21that is what is happening right now in those areas and they're quarantining those areas as well
03:26that's one i got a call out to all pet owners the first pet was actually we found screw worm
03:31and a dog
03:31in new mexico and you've heard me katie over the years say it's really important all pet owners
03:36have their full year tick and flea programs and worm programs credelio quattro is the only product
03:44that does have a conditionally approved label for new world screw worm and we recommend 12 months and
03:52credelio quattro has that broad coverage so for all pet owners make sure with your veterinarians you've got
03:57a 12 month program because it could even be a tick bite that actually is that small that a screw
04:02worm
04:03could actually impact um your pets so it's very important this is not just cattle this is pets as well
04:08how much can you sort of ramp up uh the availability of some of this and let's talk
04:13about for a second about the pet side of this business in certain parts of the country we're
04:17actually seeing an influx a higher level uh of tick infestations than you normally would and of course
04:23that's causing a lot of anxiety given uh the potential link with screw worms i mean what
04:28assurance is if for some reason this does get out of hand do you have the ability to increase production
04:34uh maybe put that uh whatever that uh that chemical is for the screw worms into other products as well
04:42yes romaine i can assure you that we've got and we've been planning just like uh you know the
04:47government's been planning we have actually you know ensured that we've got plenty of supply of product
04:52both on the pet side as well as on the farm side we're working with them also in a stockpiling
04:57where we can actually make sure supply is close to these quarantined areas for quick immediate
05:04treatment and uh you know we forecasted and and planned for you know this to spread and uh and we
05:11will have the product available and uh not just ourselves but the the you know the animal health
05:17industry that's mobilizing together so you can be assured of that and and maybe a dumb question
05:21but i am curious as to how much you meaning your company actually monitors the actual uh spread
05:27or the trajectory of this uh of these uh disease and infections or do you rely uh on uh the
05:33government
05:33uh health agencies to do that for you yeah remain great great questions you know 70 years elanco's
05:39been serving our first uh our first market we started 1954 was the cattle industry and we've been
05:45serving the cattle industry we are on the ground right now in all those areas working closely
05:50with the national cattle association the texas cattle feeders and and the usda we've got technical
05:57people veterinarians on the ground as well working very closely so we're going to we're going to be
06:02you know i said mobilizing we're going to collaborate across uh this industry collaborates you know
06:07greatly better than uh you know most any industry and uh and i would just say that we're we're going
06:12to
06:12work very closely we're not going to count on any one individual uh we're going to make sure that
06:17this is working well and again i want to emphasize there is going to be some spreading here but we
06:21we're confident we can get to the animals we can treat them cattle are going to be okay um if
06:27it's
06:27monitored and managed right and we've been preparing this is not a surprise that this was coming it was
06:32probably a matter of more where and when than if and again a real call out to to the collaboration
06:39and
06:40secretary rollins has led the charge here and done a great job not just of on the ground the fly
06:45program quarantines but also making sure we had conditionally approved products that we had a
06:50portfolio ready to go as an animal health industry for cattlemen when they needed it
