00:00So guys one of you sent me this news of what's going on in Ireland. I honestly didn't realize
00:05because it wasn't as big a news in some respects to what's happening in Norway and Sweden and
00:11Denmark but you know what Ireland EV sales have gone ballistic this year and it's not just a
00:17response to the war and fuel prices it happened to start it before that. Interesting article here
00:23guys from theirischexaminer.com it says as Ireland's EV sales surge is the age of oil-powered
00:32vehicles nearly over? Hello my friends welcome to the channel I'm Sam Evans. Nearly 17,000 EVs were
00:39sold in Ireland in the first four months of this year that means one in every four cars or 25
00:45% of
00:46all cars sold in Ireland this year 25% were fully electric it's not hybrids that's just fully electric
00:53cars. So the Irish examiner said this and I thought it was an intriguing statement though it seems hard
00:58to imagine today in the early years after the invention of the motor car in the 1880s the nascent
01:05industry was dominated by electric cars. Had this trend continued the oil-soaked and bloody history
01:12of the last century and a quarter would likely have been radically different. Ironically efforts to help
01:19develop the motor car were largely driven by the growing pollution crisis created by the manure
01:25produced by the vast number of horses used for transport. There was just manure as in you know
01:31horse poo everywhere in cities all over roads it's just chronic. A newspaper report from the late 1850s
01:38described the streets of New York as a massive reeking disgusting filth which in some places is piled to
01:45such a height as to rend them almost impassable to vehicles. So some streets had so much horse poo
01:53that vehicles couldn't even get through in some streets. On the Electric Viking website I'll put a
02:01link in the description below we have more articles about electric cars and battery technology than any
02:07other website that I'm aware of in the world. So check that out link is in the description and there
02:14you'll find our videos and analysis and articles about everything going on in the EV world. Isn't it
02:20interesting how back then when people had horses many of them were like motor car never going to
02:25catch on that's just a fad I mean hell no I'm sticking with my horse it's reliable you know and
02:31how things
02:31really changed so quickly. While electric and internal combustion engine vehicle technologies jostled for
02:38dominance at the start of the 20th century the introduction of the cheap mass-produced Ford Model T
02:43in 1908 sounded the death knell for the short-lived EV age. Although dirty and noisy petrol-powered cars
02:52had a key advantage of having a longer range than EVs at the time and they were faster to refuel
02:57obviously we didn't have a very good charging network in fact at that time 70 percent of Americans
03:02didn't even have electricity at their houses so you can really see why EVs were never going to take
03:08off at that point. EVs established a niche largely for female drivers who used them mainly for shorter
03:16local trips. While Henry Ford sold 15 million Model Ts his wife Claire was unimpressed choosing instead
03:25to drive a Detroit electric. Clara Ford it turns out was right after all but it has taken a century
03:34for the long reign of the internal combustion engine to come to a jittering halt. For many industry
03:39observers 2026 signals the tipping point particularly in Europe and China. The moment beyond which the
03:47terminal decline of fossil-fuelled motoring begins to gather unstoppable momentum. The Irish examiner says
03:54for a glimpse into our near future consider Norway in 2015 one in 10 new cars sold were EVs. In
04:022025 it
04:03was 96 percent. This year it's 98 percent. In Norway this year only 12 petrol cars have been sold.
04:1312. Imagine the resale value of an internal combustion vehicle particularly if you bought a luxury one a couple
04:18of years ago you would have lost just so much money. Meanwhile in Denmark four in five new cars sold
04:23so far
04:23this year are electric. Sales of electric cars have collapsed. Even in Germany famous for its car
04:32mad petrol heads and autobahns with no speed limits the dam is beginning to break. More than one in five
04:42new
04:43cars sold so far this year are fully electric. A jump of over 40 percent compared with 2025. In Ireland
04:50this
04:50year EV sales have increased by 48 percent. While not yet scaling the heights of you know those other
04:56countries in the Nordic regions nearly 17,000 EVs were sold in Ireland in the first four months of
05:032026 which was an increase of just under 50 percent on last year. That means one in four cars sold
05:10were fully electric in Ireland. 25 percent market share. At this rate the examiner says
05:17how long before many petrol stations become unavailable and I've been saying that to people
05:23for a long time. People get worried about EV charging stations. I'm saying you should be worried
05:27about petrol stations, gas stations. They're going to disappear incredibly quickly. The uptake of EVs has
05:34been dogged by roadblocks in the form of disinformation campaigns sponsored by fossil fuel interests and
05:41people have been brainwashed into believing so many crazy things about EVs it's not funny. A lot of this is
05:46spread by right-wing media outlets to undermine public confidence in the new technology and a lot
05:51of it's just spread to be honest by people who are afraid of change. People who can't stand something
05:57different. A lot of it's spread to be honest by people who just love internal combustion vehicles
06:02and they're a lot of very low intelligence for a lot of these people and they spread a lot of
06:07false
06:07information to their low intelligence friends unfortunately and it just gets around. You may have heard
06:12that EVs are a fire hazard or some people think they are. In reality internal combustion cars are far more
06:19likely to catch fire. The examiner says that a senior official from the UK Department of Transport told a
06:24Lord's Committee investigation in 2024. There is an anti-EV story in the papers almost every day, nearly all of
06:33which are based on misconceptions and mistruths. Attacks on EVs as well as heat pumps and renewable energy
06:40generally have become the new form of climate denial. Often persistent myths include the idea
06:45that an EV is more carbon intensive than an ice car which is ridiculous. In reality over the entire
06:51life of the vehicle an EV emits vastly less carbon even if powered by an electric grid run on coal
06:58or
06:58fossil fuels. Vastly less. But if it's powered by solar the difference is astronomical of course.
07:05The reason is simple for this. Efficiency. For a typical diesel or petrol car less than 20% of the
07:12energy in the fuel tank actually turns the wheels. 80% is lost energy. The rest is lost as heat
07:22in
07:22transmission and through the gears. In stark contrast almost 90% of the energy in an EV battery
07:27turns the wheels. What's more EVs can operate as a virtual power station instantly releasing energy
07:35back to the national grid when needed. Motor manufacturers have invested billions of dollars
07:41into ever more sophisticated engines that to be honest don't do anything better than the previous
07:45generation. But they've run into a brick wall of diminishing returns from a century-old technology
07:51that is inherently inefficient and obviously highly polluting as well. The 10-year total cost of
07:58ownership of an EV in Ireland is an average 15,000 pounds less than its internal combustion engine
08:08equivalent. So that means the 10-year cost of ownership you're going to save like what's that nearly
08:1530,000 US dollars versus a petrol car. And crucially 2026 sees EVs reach purchase price parity in many
08:24countries including Ireland thus removing a major stumbling block. The Irish Examiner says the last
08:30perhaps most critical tipping point is in what has long been the Achilles heel of EVs. Their lack of range
08:38and patchy public charging infrastructure leading to the very real phenomenon of range anxiety or at least
08:45the perception of range anxiety anyway. I've been an EV driver says the writer since 2018. Back then the
08:53longest range EV available was extremely expensive and limited to less than 400 kilometers of real-world
08:58driving. I recently drove from South Dublin to Kilkenny then on to Cork City and back to Dublin the following
09:05day. A round journey of over 570 kilometers all on a single charge. Had I needed to top up there
09:15are now
09:16plenty of high-speed charges available on the way but he didn't need to. The battery on my new EV
09:21he says
09:21comes with a 10-year or 250,000 kilometer warranty. That's a better warranty than on any internal combustion
09:28car that I've ever heard of and that's proof really of the shifting reliability of EV batteries. With the
09:35US stuck in reverse gear the Irish Examiner says Europe is finally waking up to the EV revolution and
09:42the US is falling behind. China has already powered ahead in the technological fast lane. Chinese manufacturers
09:48have recently unveiled new models with more than 1,000 kilometers of range that can be fully charged in
09:54nine minutes that are actually relatively affordable. EV tech is spreading fast to trucks, to buses, to
10:02e-bikes, skateboards, tractors, machinery, everything. The unstoppable ascendancy of the EV delivers a
10:10potentially fatal blow to the fossil fuel industry and they're fighting. I mean they're fighting against
10:15this constantly. Last year EVs cut oil demand globally by more than 2 million barrels a day. By 2040 experts
10:23believe it will be more than 20 million barrels a day. Wiping out one-fifth or more of all demand
10:31for
10:32oil. That's just for EVs. And sending the planet-killing energy corporations into a death spiral of falling
10:38demand and falling prices. Range anxiety is now being replaced with pump anxiety. As soaring fuel prices
10:49resulting from the Iran war have encouraged millions of people to finally scrap their
10:53pricey gas guzzlers. Meanwhile, the Irish state will need to find new ways to equitably fund our road
11:02maintenance program as it faces drops in revenue from fuel taxes. Now despite the last three decades of
11:09intergovernmental climate conferences and solemn commitments, oil consumption has continued to
11:15increase. Now at the 11th hour, our best and final chance to avoid a fossil fuel collapse of the global
11:25climate system by mid-century has arrived in the form of renewable energy and advanced battery technology.
11:33The ice age is over, says the examiner. If you haven't yet taken the leap, now is the time.
