04:37I'm coming!
04:38Ha ha ha!
04:40Şano's found a piece.
04:41This could be the patch.
04:43Let's have a look.
04:44There it is there Rusty!
04:46Ha ha!
04:47Have a look at that.
04:48Just here, eh?
04:49Right there.
04:50Right there Russell.
04:51How about we just get a machine, open this up, take the top off.
04:54Make it happen Russell.
04:55Move some dirt and make some money.
05:04I'm just going to move this lower.
05:06We've been at this lease now for quite a while and we've had some really good results,
05:10but the ground is slowly starting to peter off a little bit.
05:14So I've got a bit of a new spot down here that I'm hoping the fine golds blow downhill a
05:18little bit.
05:19Former midwife Cheryl Munro.
05:21Then I'll go join Simon.
05:23And ex-butcher Simon Laws.
05:25Come back at that.
05:25Have reinvested over $200,000 of last season's profits into expanding their mining operation
05:33deep in the remote goldfields of Western Australia.
05:39Alright Simon, that's it already.
05:46Here we have all first fill.
05:51Yeah, I can see it's completely filled.
05:53Oh, the hopper's still got dirt in it, so it's too heavy to fill.
05:56It's got about four tonne of dirt in there.
05:58So I've buried the axle, which always happens when we're loading the machine.
06:02So I'll just dig a bit of that out.
06:04It'll come out a bit easier.
06:08This year we've brought a second dry blower, two extra loaders to keep up with the dirt.
06:13We've also, up the anti-massively, we've put on four full-time staff.
06:18Now that we've got the extra staff, we're trying to work on two ounces a day.
06:21So we've got a lot more pressure.
06:23We've got to keep payable dirt in front of us all the time.
06:25We'll be paying wages and keeping the machines running.
06:29Got a copy, Sam?
06:30Yeah, mate.
06:31We've got to push up some dirt and push a track.
06:33Yeah, yeah, no worries, mate.
06:34I'm a carpenter by trade.
06:36Not very good at it.
06:38A couple of me mates were mucking around doing a bit of tectin and got me hooked.
06:42Now I'm stuffed for life.
06:44Last year we did really well.
06:46We actually made more than what we thought we were going to make,
06:49but it's mainly hard work and determination.
06:53I'm originally from Scotland, been in Australia for 19 years.
06:57It was very scary when I first started because I hadn't even driven a trailer.
07:01First-time miners, Cheryl and Simon...
07:04Choking too much dust.
07:05...were tested by a brutal debut season.
07:08My friends and family have accomplished.
07:11See me now, I think it's something ever nicer to be doing this.
07:14That's amazing, isn't it?
07:15Maybe we can build on next year, maybe a second blower, another machine.
07:19So this year we've made ourselves fully mobile so we can do a lot of tribute work.
07:24So basically I'll work someone else's lease, do all the work, all the expense, all the rehabilitation
07:29and they've received 20% of the gold that we find.
07:34So they can be sitting home on the couch watching the footy
07:36and earning really good money if we're finding really good gold.
07:40It's not like my gold's leaving.
07:42That'll always be there waiting for us.
07:44It's a little bit like our safety guard.
07:47To stay afloat, the team rely on two $80,000 dry blowers.
07:52As pay dirt is fed into a hopper, a mesh grate filters out larger rocks,
07:58allowing finer material to drop into riffle trays below.
08:03Air and vibration blow away lighter waste, leaving heavier material
08:08to be further processed through the sluice.
08:14We've got four buckets of dirt from the dry blower for 12 hours' work.
08:18And then we put it through the sluice here and there's a little mat here
08:21and the fine gold can get caught in the mat.
08:23And then what happens is at the end, once we wash all the dirt,
08:26we empty out the mat and empty out the sluice tray here.
08:29Pan that off and we'll see what the result is.
08:31And the gold was actually all right to begin with,
08:34but it's kind of thinned out quite a bit.
08:37Because, you know, we set that ambitious target of 100 ounces,
08:41which we need to train to maintain the team that we have
08:46and the machinery we have.
08:48So, exciting when we've got a bigger team,
08:51but now racking at the same time that we have to get gold.
08:55The pressure's on us more, more than it ever was.
08:59You'll see a little bit of gold.
09:02That's only two buckets, but you can see a little bit here.
09:04It could be better, but not too bad.
09:09Just pushing up a bit of dirt,
09:10trying to keep up with these two blowers.
09:12Hopefully, if the ground is really good,
09:15we can work towards building a wet plant
09:17so the weather doesn't stop us as much.
09:22Mark, how are you going?
09:25Yep, yep, yep.
09:27Yeah, righto, understandable.
09:30I'll speak to Cheryl tonight and I'll get back to you.
09:40How's it looking?
09:41Yeah, it's cold there, Simon, but definitely thinned down a bit.
09:45Yeah.
09:45We're really starting to run out of options here.
09:48Well, just had a bit of an interesting phone call.
09:51Mark, he's got a lease he wants us to work.
09:53It's had hundreds of ounces found just detecting.
09:57Oh, great.
09:58It's never been dry-blowed.
09:59Where is it?
09:59I'll show you.
10:01We're way up here and where he wants us to work
10:04is there.
10:07Colgoolie?
10:08Yeah.
10:09Yeah, that's not round the corner.
10:10So it's about 800k's if you go the shortcut through the bush.
10:13That's a massive commitment financially.
10:16Yeah.
10:1730, 40 grand without considering the wages of the guys towing stuff backwards and forwards.
10:22Yeah.
10:23We've got to take everything there.
10:24And we've only got to the end of the week to let you know whether we're interested or not.
10:27But we need an answer by the end of the week.
10:28Yeah.
10:29That's the biggest decision we've had to make moving wise.
10:32Yeah, absolutely.
10:33If we stay here we could go bankrupt in a matter of weeks.
10:35Yeah.
10:37Big decisions.
10:45What do you mean you sold it?
10:46I sold it.
10:47Our first one ounce nugget.
10:49Why would you sell it to somebody else?
10:51I gave you first dibs.
10:52No you didn't.
10:53I came to you.
10:54You didn't have the money.
10:55I sold it.
10:56How much did you get for it?
10:57I sold it for like $5,000.
10:59Haven't you got a sentimental bone in your body?
11:01Gold is money and I needed the money.
11:06Man, these roads have really gone gnarly.
11:08I'd be taking it easy through here if I were you.
11:10I was the first one to handle that.
11:12I gave birth to that thing.
11:14Yeah.
11:14I stuck my hand down into the earth.
11:17Pulled it out.
11:19Oh look at this.
11:20Why don't you hop out and have a look?
11:22You want me to drive?
11:23Hell no.
11:28I reckon it's doable but I'd be looking for another way around.
11:31Nah, nah.
11:32I'm just going to send it.
11:33You just watch this mate.
11:35Don't get stuck.
11:43Alright Bart, let's go.
11:45Woohoo!
11:45Let's find some gold.
11:48Lifelong mates, 51 year old Darren Bray and 55 year old Anthony Stein are starting their
11:56season over three and a half thousand kilometres from their homes in Tasmania in the remote goldfields of far north
12:03Queensland.
12:05We've basically set up a fly in fly out operation where we travel up every few months for a few
12:11months at a time.
12:12So I'm leaving three young kids and my wife at home back in Tasmania.
12:16It's pretty hard being so far away from them for so long.
12:20We've traded our life in Tasmania to come up here and rough it. Up here you've got a chance of
12:26striking it. One big patch can change your life.
12:29Alright mate, we are officially on open ground in gold country.
12:33With gold prices soaring, the pair are determined to stake their own lease on newly available ground, close to an
12:41area they mined five years ago.
12:44It's been under licence for 20 years mate, so we've got to prove this ground, prove it carries.
12:49Gold. We'll be the first to hammer in those pegs, get the application sent off.
12:53You know the drill, once these things come up, they go pretty quick.
12:57We set ourselves a 20 ounce target this season. This could be the ground that gets us there.
13:02Yeah, yeah.
13:02So we just pull in, set up camp and let's go for a walk.
13:06And do some detecting, go find some gold.
13:11You gonna give me a hand?
13:12Hand with that. Little Hilson on wheels.
13:16I just got a pop-top camper, which is pretty comfy.
13:21Ant's gonna be sleeping in his swag.
13:23It snores like a freight train, so I'm gonna be a little bit of distance between us.
13:28We run off grid out here, so we run our fridge off solar power.
13:33How about a second bedroom?
13:35We've got a pretty comfortable kitchen here.
13:37It's just a mattress.
13:38It's got a midgey screen.
13:41Keep all the bugs and snakes out.
13:45This is the en suite.
13:47Queen size bed.
13:48I've got windows.
13:50Let the breeze in.
13:51It's still going.
13:53You've only got three poles, mate.
13:55Mate, this is all you need out in the bush.
13:57It's what the old timers used.
13:59It might be all you need, but it's not all you want.
14:03There you have it.
14:04The North Queensland Hilton.
14:11I've always been interested in gold ever since a young fella.
14:15It's like finding treasure.
14:17Didn't think much of it for quite a few years until I met Darren.
14:21He started talking about it.
14:22He was very interested.
14:24He bought himself a detector and we started finding gold.
14:27We decided to give the different type of gold mining another shot.
14:30I got burnt pretty bad the last time we decided to do something.
14:33I think we ran a little bit too big, too fast.
14:36Back in 2020, we ran a wash plant, which was a bit of a disaster.
14:40We ran three trucks.
14:42We had a 30 tonne excavator, a 15 tonne loader.
14:46We were making about 10 ounces a week, but it didn't end well.
14:50Machinery breaks down, fuel costs.
14:51We had a lot of problems.
14:53This season, we'd just like to improve some ground, peg a lease,
14:56and then use some small equipment to scrape the top,
14:59get the nuggets that we can't pick up with a detector and a pick.
15:03I don't want to get burnt like last time.
15:04I can't afford it.
15:05It just about sank me.
15:09Oh, look at this. Detector hole.
15:11Seeing that detector hole tells me that other people are out here chasing gold.
15:16We need to beat them to it.
15:19It's not a cheap process securing ground.
15:22There's all sorts of fees, so we want to detect the ground first
15:24and make sure it carries and make sure this ground is the one.
15:27Yes, we've got to find that patch first.
15:32Oh, there you have it.
15:34This is the sign he needed.
15:40Let's see if it's come out of the ground.
15:45Oh, it's out.
15:51Hear that?
15:53There it is, our first nuggie.
15:55Woo-hoo!
15:57Look out!
15:58Hey, Desi, copy?
16:00Copy, yeah?
16:01You really need to get over here, mate.
16:03Copy that.
16:04Maybe he's found something.
16:05Maybe.
16:07What do you got?
16:08Guess who's buying the beers tonight?
16:10You're joking.
16:11Check it out.
16:13Little maybe half gram.
16:14Here's a hundred bucks for you, mate.
16:15It's a start, mate.
16:16Good stuff.
16:17Well done.
16:17Woo!
16:30How'd you go?
16:31I had a very nice siesta under the tree, in the shade, and I got up and I found two
16:39nice
16:40little nuggets.
16:40Can you imagine how many of you would have found if you weren't sleeping under the tree?
16:44I found them just on the other side of that creek there.
16:46So I'd be probably on the edge of that.
16:49What do you think?
16:49Alright, we'll see how we go.
16:50We'll run down the edge right now.
16:53This could be the roof, Shane.
16:56This could be the roof, Shane.
16:56As long as we've got some depth, here's what we want.
16:58Some depth.
16:59In the remote Pilbara region, Rusty has brought in his mini excavator from his fantasy gully
17:05at least 20 kilometres away, hoping it will break through the tough ground around a newly discovered
17:12gold patch.
17:15The good thing about the excavator is you can clean the spin effects away, and then if
17:19we start digging down, we get down to that deeper gold, because the detector will only
17:23work so deep.
17:29There's a nice sound there.
17:31Oh!
17:34Shane's on the one.
17:37That's just a nice sound.
17:39I don't know yet how big it is.
17:42See, it's just there somewhere.
17:46Yeah, that sounds better.
17:52There it is there.
17:53Nice bit of gold, Rusty!
17:56You got one?
17:56Yeah, it is rough as ducks, Russell.
17:59It's small, maybe 0.3 grams, so 50 bucks at best, but it's great colour.
18:04Okay, we're on.
18:05Let's just keep going.
18:07The good thing about the price of gold is it's made all the values of the leases increase
18:11quite substantially too.
18:12And that's why we're here, to prove the lease, so Shane can sell it.
18:16This is hard.
18:20What the hell is that?
18:34I know.
18:36Shane?
18:37Yes, Rusty?
18:39Oh, look at this.
18:40Look.
18:41Look.
18:41It's sticking out through the edge.
18:43Stunt track packs.
18:44Well, we need this like a hole in the head, Russell.
18:46Oh!
18:48We're dead in the water now.
18:52Ah, it's broken the pads out of the tracks.
18:55That's four of them are gone.
18:56They must be here somewhere.
18:58Oh, they're broken off in here.
19:01That's a drive sprocket, and these are your drive teeth.
19:03And so they sit in there, and they're stuck to the track normally, and that turns around
19:07and grabs it, and drives it again.
19:09And without these, I've got no drive, and it's going to break the track clean in half.
19:13Unbelievable.
19:14So, what are we going to do, Russell?
19:16I'll have to go back to Fantasy, see if we've got another one there.
19:18It's not a big job, but still, I've got to go back and get it.
19:21Well, Rusty, let's not waste any time, just move on.
19:25I'll go and detect and see if I can pick up a little bit.
19:28I'll just battle on here on me own, Russell.
19:30I'd better have the spare one, otherwise that's the end of this trip.
19:46Here we are in Kalgoorlie.
19:48Well, here's hoping the grain's good, Simon, hey, because it's a big risk to move.
19:52Yeah, it's probably going to run into the 40 grand mark, just to get everything here,
19:56before you actually make a gram of gold.
19:58And we're leaving gold to perhaps find more gold, but, you know, it could be a million
20:04dollar payday.
20:05Cheryl and Simon have just weeks of reliable pay dirt left at their main operation.
20:10So they've travelled more than 800 kilometres south, over half the length of Britain,
20:16in search of a lifeline.
20:18You're not going to travel 800km away, fully set up camp and everything like that,
20:22if it's the same gold, it's got to be better.
20:24Yeah.
20:25It all comes down to what we can see in these samples.
20:28High risk.
20:29High to work.
20:30They've been given the opportunity to relocate their entire operation here,
20:35but doing so means paying a percentage of any gold produced to the leaseholder.
20:41Yeah, I'll get you to bring up your maps, because it's in here somewhere.
20:44Yeah, it's probably up here about 400 metres and then to your left.
20:48Oh yeah, I can see the old workings in here now.
20:50So someone's had a scratch around in here.
20:55Oh, that was a big drive.
20:57It was.
20:57We made it.
20:58A lot of old workings, so we'll grab just some random samples just here and there,
21:03and then we can, you know, see if we can see a speck.
21:06So we've got something to back up our decision, really.
21:08All right.
21:09Well, it's a half a million dollar target we've set for ourselves.
21:13Yeah, it's a big one.
21:14Let's go and scratch up some dirt and...
21:16Get some gold.
21:19It's a really big lease, probably over a thousand hectares.
21:22We've started here because there's a lot of old-timer pushings here.
21:26You don't do that many pushings if you're not finding any gold.
21:29This whole lease has only ever been scraped and detected.
21:31There's never been a dry blower on here, so hopefully we can mop up and get that really
21:35fine gold that they couldn't detect.
21:37That's our bread and butter.
21:40I'll just grab a little bit from here and a little bit from there.
21:42So we'll get a bit of an average then, maybe.
21:48The best bit is that while we're out here searching for new ground,
21:52we've got the team back at Mika working.
21:54You know, the wheels are still turning, which normally, you know, down tools,
21:57you're not making any money while you're looking for new ground.
22:00We actually go back and there's going to be dirt in the buckets
22:02ready for us to pan off.
22:06The thing is, with the move, yes, money is a massive, massive factor in it,
22:10but we've also got a lovely team of people that we've got to look after
22:14and feed and make sure that we get gold on the other side.
22:17They're all willing to make the move for us.
22:19We want to make it worth the while.
22:21It could cost their jobs if we don't get enough gold.
22:24It's a big decision. It's a really big decision.
22:30What's your thoughts then?
22:31That looks good.
22:32Like, it's got all the signs to it,
22:34and if this is where they found the least amount of nuggets,
22:37the other areas should be really good.
22:39And the thing is, if we don't take this deal,
22:42he's going to give it to someone else.
22:43Yeah.
22:44And are we missing out on a massive payday?
22:46Yeah, and I guess we've only got to the end of the week
22:47to make that decision.
22:49It's just got to proof itself, really.
22:50Yeah.
22:51We just want that nice little tail in the pan.
22:53So you only think, well, two specks for the two buckets,
22:56but you times that by thousands.
22:58That's going to be a lot of gold.
22:59Let's hope there's some speckies in there.
23:01Yeah.
23:01All right, let's go, lads.
23:03That tail in the pan determines our future, really.
23:21Keep going, mate.
23:23There you go.
23:24That's mechanical leverage, people.
23:31There you go.
23:33Look out.
23:36Still in there, mate.
23:44That sounds better.
23:48There it is.
23:50Oh, look at that.
23:52Look at that.
23:53Look at that.
23:54Look at that.
23:54Now we're talking.
23:56Much better.
23:58Oh, nice.
23:58Oh, that's like, that might be a four or five gram, mate.
24:01At 5,000 bucks an ounce, mate.
24:03Woo-hoo.
24:03It's adding up.
24:06We need a few more of those.
24:07That'll start paying wages.
24:09Let's find some more.
24:10Where you find gold, there's usually its friends with it.
24:14So nice and...
24:15Oh, here we go.
24:19Another target, Anne.
24:20Oh, another target.
24:22It's almost coming too easy.
24:24Right at the base of the tree, too.
24:26That's a great spot.
24:28There we go.
24:31Ah.
24:32We've got two targets right next to each other.
24:34We have.
24:35Well, how about we get this one first?
24:36Okay.
24:37All right.
24:39Let's see.
24:39Oh, look at that.
24:41Oh, no way.
24:41Another five, six grams.
24:43Look at the size of that.
24:44Oh, my God.
24:45That's got some weight.
24:47Look at that.
24:48We've got one here under your foot, you reckon.
24:51That should be an easy one for you, mate.
24:53Two in one hole, mate.
24:54I love when that happens.
24:57Oh, there it is.
24:59Look at that.
25:02That's another beauty, mate.
25:05They're coming thick and fast.
25:06We're going to peg this.
25:07It's paying.
25:08Let's get the GPS.
25:09Mark this spot.
25:10All right.
25:11Locked in.
25:12All right, let's go.
25:13Ow!
25:15So, once we've got a lease peg,
25:17we can use small machines to scrape the top off.
25:19the ground and get anything deeper down that we missed from the surface.
25:22I've plotted out a 75-hectare area around Patch.
25:26We're going to make sure our coordinates are bang on, too.
25:28If we make a mistake on those coordinates,
25:30the mines department won't even accept the lease.
25:32To secure their mining rights,
25:34they must first hammer in four metal pegs
25:37to mark out the boundaries of a new lease
25:40before lodging the coordinates with the mines department.
25:43Mate, just looking on this map,
25:44we're getting pretty close to where we're going to put our first peg in.
25:47Excellent.
25:49Hey, what's that?
25:51That's new tracks.
25:52You've got to be joking.
25:53Let's get out and have a look.
25:58We've just spotted some tracks,
26:00and this is right on the area that we want to peak.
26:03Mate, these are fresh tracks.
26:05These aren't ours.
26:05So this means that somebody else is out here.
26:08Got to be joking.
26:10Mate, is that a car?
26:12Mate, let's go.
26:13Let's go.
26:14How can someone be here before we get here?
26:19Let's go.
26:23Mate, I can't believe someone beat us out here.
26:34There's a lot of spare at least.
26:36Well, we're going to open this up.
26:37Got to crack the valve in here.
26:38Yep.
26:39And then let the idler gear come back.
26:40Oh, yeah.
26:41That'll let the track down.
26:42Okay.
26:43You watch this.
26:43It'll start to sag down in a second.
26:45Rusty was able to get another track from his lease,
26:48so we've just got to change it out and get back to it.
26:52I'll leave you around this side.
26:53Yep.
26:53All right.
26:54Now, what I want to do now is this bar here.
26:57Yep.
26:57I want you to push it backwards.
26:58Okay?
26:59Yep.
26:59Only when I tell you.
27:00Yeah, okay.
27:01If I yell, I want you to stop.
27:02Okay.
27:03All right.
27:03Start going.
27:04All right.
27:05Keep going.
27:06Keep going.
27:08Yep, yep, whoop, whoop.
27:11All right.
27:11A bit more.
27:12A bit more.
27:13Keep going.
27:15All right.
27:15That's it.
27:16She's off.
27:17Stop.
27:17Stop.
27:17Stop there.
27:18Yeah, well, I have to do all the heavy work for her.
27:20Don't hurt yourself, though.
27:21Ah, ah.
27:22Hey.
27:23Oh, ****.
27:25You all right or what?
27:26Ah, better fix up the arse.
27:27How do you feel?
27:29I told you to be careful.
27:30Now, getting the new one back on.
27:32What can I do now, Russell?
27:33Well, stay out of the way if you want.
27:34You don't want to get hurt.
27:35I should be able to take care of this.
27:38That's it.
27:39We got it, Shane.
27:40We got it.
27:41Okay, Rusty.
27:42Let's get back on the goal.
27:51We found some nice dug-ups already, so just a few more chains to be able to get a good
27:55dollar for this lease.
27:56I mean, for a lease that's not very good, you'll pay $5,000 or $6,000 for it, but one
28:00that's good pays $6,000 to $70,000.
28:01I've seen leases for $100,000, $200,000 because they're good gold-proving leases.
28:06The gold price today doesn't take long to recoup it.
28:09It's got to prove that it's here, that the gold is here.
28:15Gee, that's a nice sound.
28:17It's either a very large piece, I don't know what it is, but let's dig it out and have a
28:21look.
28:24Come on, where are you?
28:25Come on, the gold gods are going to start looking after me.
28:30I can't work this out.
28:32This seems to be there and not there, so obviously a couple together here.
28:39It's all there.
28:40Oh, there it is there.
28:42That's the nicest little bit of gold we found.
28:44Look at it.
28:45You know, always check.
28:46There you are.
28:47There's another sound.
28:49That's why I had so much trouble.
28:51Right, I've got it in the scoop.
28:53Look at that.
28:56So, there you are.
28:58Two together.
28:59Two together.
28:59This is what you want to find.
29:01Really good sized gold.
29:03Probably about four or five hundred bucks worth there.
29:06Radio.
29:08Silky, eh?
29:13Oh, listen to that, brother.
29:16Let's have a look.
29:17Come on.
29:19Always separate your material as much as you can.
29:26Ah, it's in here.
29:27It's in here.
29:32Look at this bit of blood.
29:33Look at this, a bit of quartz.
29:38Oh, there's gold attached to this.
29:40This is off a reef.
29:41That means it hasn't travelled very far.
29:43Russell!
29:45I found some reef gold.
29:48Well done, Shano.
29:49We'd better take another scrape off this.
29:52Well, if you've done that bit now, I'll come and dig that deeper.
29:54There's probably more down deeper.
29:56Okay, Rusty.
29:59Well, we're doing the cha-cha, Russell.
30:00Swap around.
30:02Yeah, I mean, Shane's had a couple of really good vines.
30:04Oh, jeez, that's hard.
30:05Well, quartz here.
30:06Shane's found a speci and a few nuggets here.
30:08So I'll go through now and I'll dig this out again and get down deeper.
30:11Because when the gold travels through, it travels on the bottom on its deepest part.
30:16So that's where we need to get to.
30:17He's found the floaters and the speci, so it needs to be fed by the source.
30:21So, worth digging again.
30:24It's cribbing up the temperature, believe me.
30:28Oh, there's a sound.
30:30Okay, let's have a look.
30:31Oh, this is the first sound of this new scrape.
30:34So let's have a look.
30:43Oh, nailed it first up.
30:46Oh, no wonder I nailed it.
30:48Look at the size of that.
30:50This is a lovely piece of gold.
30:51Shaped like United Kingdom.
30:54Scotland up the top there.
30:55And Wales in the corner.
30:57And that little bit there would be what they call Swansea.
31:00And over the other side would be Cornwell.
31:03Looking at each other.
31:04This piece of gold would be worth a lot more money in the value of the gold.
31:09I would say it would be worth $600 or $700.
31:13Rusty!
31:14We got another one.
31:16I'm not coming over there.
31:17My bones are too weary, Russell.
31:19Hey, you've been on your knees the whole time.
31:22I have been on my knees picking out nuggets.
31:25Yeah, Rusty, have a way of that.
31:28That's got to be at least an ounce.
31:30I think it's every part of that, Russell.
31:31It's not big, but it's gold.
31:33That's the main thing.
31:33And it's special too.
31:35You've done well for the day.
31:3670-year-old and digging nuggets like a champ.
31:38Now I've got to get these five ounces of gold for this buyer.
31:41If we don't succeed, no deal.
31:43So when we weigh it up there,
31:45can we just think about a bit of rusty magic on the way out, okay?
31:49We can do that.
31:49Let's give him five ounces first.
31:51I don't care how we get it to him,
31:52but we're going to get it to him, Shane.
31:53The last hurrah.
31:54Make it happen.
32:07I just can't believe someone's here.
32:09Yeah, it's so close to our patch.
32:12All right, mate, we are close now.
32:14This is it.
32:14This is the spot.
32:15The gold drifters Darren and Anthony
32:17are racing to hammer in four corner pegs.
32:20Just pull in here.
32:21to carve out a new 75 hectare mining lease
32:25from newly available ground.
32:27All right, let's put those pegs in.
32:30Which way?
32:31This way. Keep going.
32:32But with a rival prospector in the area,
32:35a single overlapping claim could cost them the lease.
32:40All right, remember,
32:40we've got to get this perfectly in line, right?
32:42Okay, okay.
32:43Tell me where, mate.
32:44All right, this is it.
32:45This is the spot.
32:47This is our northeast post.
32:49This is the most important post.
32:50This is the one the mines department checked.
32:52So we're going to get this in first.
32:53We're going to put our coordinates in.
32:55Name of the company.
32:57Date of peg.
32:58We've already seen someone in here this morning.
32:59We don't know whether they've pegged anything or not.
33:02We're not taking any chances,
33:03so we're just going to peg right now.
33:04Because if they peg an area which falls within
33:07where we want to peg,
33:08we miss out.
33:09We've got to go home.
33:10Okay.
33:12All right, mate.
33:12I'm taking a photo for evidence, all right?
33:14All right, here we go.
33:15Jeez.
33:16Beautiful.
33:17Let's go.
33:19One down.
33:20Three to go, mate.
33:24All right, mate.
33:25We're getting pretty close now, though.
33:26I need to spot.
33:27Okay.
33:28Tell me when to pull over.
33:29Mate, just pull up.
33:30What, here?
33:31No?
33:31Bit further?
33:32Keep going.
33:33All right.
33:34Pull it in here.
33:36All right.
33:37Grab it and follow me.
33:39All right.
33:40Just up here.
33:44Mate, this looks good.
33:45Right here.
33:46All right.
33:47Just lines up perfectly with the northeast.
33:50Mate, I don't see anyone here.
33:51I think we're the first here.
33:52That's good news.
33:54We're good.
33:55Another photo.
33:56Two down.
33:57Let's go.
34:01It's just up here.
34:02Okay.
34:03Just get this done.
34:06Mate, is that him?
34:08Oh, what the ****?
34:09He's holding a peg.
34:11I can't believe this.
34:12He's pegging a lease.
34:13You've got to be joking.
34:14Let's just get this in.
34:16Come on.
34:17Grab your stuff.
34:19Let's go.
34:19Let's go.
34:21Mate, this is it.
34:22We're on point here.
34:24All right.
34:24All right.
34:28Oh, he's leaving.
34:29Got his peg down.
34:30Mate, he's got a peg in.
34:33All right.
34:34Let's go.
34:35Come on.
34:36We've got to beat him to the last peg.
34:37Get your stuff in.
34:38Let's go.
34:42Go, go, go, go, go.
34:44Let's hammer it.
34:51We've got three pegs in.
34:52We've got one to go.
34:53We've got date stamps, timestamps, and all of our posts.
34:56Mate, he better not beat us.
34:58Mate, we're good.
34:59We'll be good.
35:00All right.
35:00Pull in here.
35:03Let's go.
35:07Come on, mate.
35:08The last peg.
35:14A few more.
35:16All right.
35:17That'll do.
35:18That'll do.
35:19Final peg in.
35:21Mate, let's timestamp this.
35:23Now, we need to lodge the application and hopefully secure this lease.
35:40I'm so eager to find out what the samples are that Simon's doing from Kogoli.
35:46because it is a bit of a head mess.
35:48It's not just about moving the team and everything.
35:51It's a massive financial outlay to go there.
35:54Like, we're at least going to spend $40,000 to get there.
35:58And even if we do get a positive result with a sample, that could be the best it's going
36:03to get.
36:04You just don't know.
36:06Cheryl and Simon have returned from a 1,600km round trip exploring new ground.
36:13If their 40kg samples come back at a high enough grade, it could see them relocate their
36:19entire operation.
36:24This could be a great opportunity and a perfect timing as well because the gold has been dropping
36:31off on this lease.
36:32So we were thinking about moving on somewhere else, but moving on somewhere else down the
36:37road, not 800km away, it's a bit nerve-wracking really.
36:42I've never really done any work around Kogoli.
36:44It's all been up around sort of this top end of WA.
36:49So I'm just panning off our Kogoli samples now.
36:52I've put them all into the one batch basically.
36:56So we can have a look at what we got out of all the samples all together.
37:00And it can give us a bit of an indication on how we're going to go.
37:05Nice little amount of fine gold there.
37:08A few specs for just a couple of, you know, hand buckets of dirt.
37:12Imagine how many specs you're going to get when you put through, you know, 900 tonnes from loader buckets.
37:20And then you look at what we've got there for eight hours of the dry blower.
37:26That's a lot to think about.
37:28Do we go take the gamble on this?
37:30800km away, move all our gear, stay here and continue to get that.
37:33But then that could drop off any day.
37:36So, yeah, a bit of a head scratch of what one we go with there.
37:41Yeah, not a decision to be taken lightly.
37:47Got to wipe the gold, Cheryl?
37:49What a week, hey?
37:50Yeah.
37:51Big decisions to be made.
37:52It all comes down to this little jar and that little jar.
37:54But it's not just down to that either.
37:56It's down to, you know, we've got so much to think about.
37:58The team financially, the risk.
38:01Yeah.
38:01We've set ourselves the target of two ounces a day.
38:05Yep.
38:05So we've got to get 14 ounces for the week.
38:08To see whether we're staying or are we moving on.
38:11Yeah, okay.
38:12No idea.
38:18There's three ounces.
38:21Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
38:26Oh, it's going to be close.
38:2910, 12.36.
38:32It'd be close to about 62k for the week.
38:34Ooh, that's just under then, isn't it?
38:36Just under.
38:37That makes it harder in a way, because it's just just under.
38:41I know.
38:41And our sampling.
38:43What have we got there?
38:47That's probably about a gram in there.
38:49Yeah.
38:50And then you try and imagine that's what we got out of our little sample buckets to,
38:53you know, do a 900 ton a day.
38:56It could be pretty rich.
38:57It could be very rich.
38:58Or did we pick the best part?
39:00Or did we pick the worst part?
39:01Yeah, that's exactly right.
39:03The thing is, it is thinning out here, but it has been good to us up until now.
39:06So do we stay and hope that it gets a bit better again?
39:09Well, I don't want Mark to ring me up in three months time and say, you know, you're stuffed
39:14up there.
39:15Someone's doing it and they've pulled, you know, a million bucks worth of gold out of
39:18there.
39:19Yeah.
39:19I reckon we go.
39:20Me too.
39:21Let's have a crack.
39:24Let's do it.
39:25Floss.
39:26Big move.
39:34First way up of your last season.
39:35It's been a big week, hasn't it?
39:36It has.
39:37We managed to get over a few issues.
39:39We had a breakdown.
39:40We got over that.
39:41And we managed to find gold still.
39:43So I think we're going all right, Russell.
39:45It's been a good week.
39:46Yep.
39:46It's been enjoyable.
39:47Come on, Rusty, weigh it up.
39:48How enjoyable has it been, though?
39:49I was about to see.
39:54Oh, it's 1.062.
39:56That's decent money.
39:57And then the specie, that'll crush up and give us a few more grams out of that.
40:01So...
40:02OK, that's about 1.4.
40:04So I reckon about 1.3.
40:05So we're going to go all right.
40:06That's about $6,500.
40:08Well, Russell, we need a total of five ounces to sell the tenement.
40:11At the moment, we've got probably an ounce and a half.
40:14So we've got to get three and a half ounces to make it happen.
40:17And we're not going to get that detecting, are we?
40:19No way in the world, Russell.
40:20We can either sluice or dry blow.
40:22It looks like I've got a job to do, haven't I?
40:24I've got to find a dry blower.
40:25In the middle of nowhere, Shane, I'll just click my fingers
40:28and do a Miss Genie, shall I?
40:29Well, Russell, sometimes you have a little bit of luck
40:32and you might be able to just pull something out of your hat.
40:34There's a lot of people around here and you're well connected.
40:36Come on, Rusty, let's move on.
40:44It's been a pretty full-on week.
40:45Mate, it was a huge week.
40:47It was a mission just getting here.
40:48Oh, mate.
40:49How about that guy that we nearly poached our patch?
40:51Oh, yeah.
40:52Thank God we got it all submitted.
40:54Well, pegged and submitted.
40:56Paperwork in.
40:57Let's hope everything goes to plan.
40:58Yep.
40:59We can get our gear.
40:59We can go back out and find some more gold.
41:01Yeah.
41:01In the meantime, should we see what we've got for the week?
41:04Absolutely.
41:04That's what I'm here for.
41:130.84 of an ounce.
41:160.84 of an ounce.
41:185,000 bucks an ounce.
41:20Yeah.
41:20Mate, 4,200 bucks.
41:22Nice.
41:23It won't keep the bank managers off our back, but hey, it's a start.
41:27No.
41:27Well, it goes towards covering the cost of just getting here, which is good.
41:30It's just the beginning.
41:31I'm sure there's more there.
41:33Good start.
41:33Problem is, we're about 19 and a bit ounces short of our target.
41:36Yeah, we've got a lot of work to do.
41:38We've got a heap of work to do.
41:39Well, let's hope this approval comes through soon and we can start opening this whole area
41:43up.
41:45Let's find some more.
41:46Alright.
