Iran outmanoeuvred US President Donald Trump "like a violin" in negotiations, walking away with far better terms after sensing his desperation for a deal to end the war, former National Security Adviser John Bolton told Euronews.

00:00Good morning, Maria. So President Trump really celebrating his deal, but the Europeans, of course, asking for more clarity. Did
00:06they get any?
00:09Well, yes, Maeve. Good morning. And in fact, just to that point, the president of Ukraine will land in Evian
00:16in about 55 minutes.
00:18But yes, Iran is really the focus and really certainly was the focus of leaders and conversations on day one
00:24of this summit.
00:26The question for the Europeans, as you alluded to, is to really find out the level of detail, because at
00:32this point, we know that there is a framework deal to end the war, but nobody has seen the actual
00:37word.
00:37And this memorandum has not been made public.
00:41And the fine print remains very much a mystery to global leaders, but also within some sectors of the U
00:48.S.
00:48Yesterday, nonetheless, the president, Donald Trump, repeated, insisted that this is a good deal that will put an end to
00:55Iran's nuclear program.
00:57He also said that the Strait of Hormuz, this is vital for the global energy market, will be, quote, fully
01:03reopened by Friday and that ceremony will go ahead.
01:06Donald Trump will not participate in that ceremony in Switzerland.
01:11It will be the vice president who heads over to Europe to sign it and formalize him, some suggestion, perhaps,
01:17that the president does not want to be associated too closely with the deal in case it flubs.
01:22But, of course, at this stage, that is political speculation.
01:25Nonetheless, there are real questions around this agreement, because U.S. officials briefed reporters here in the G7 in Evian,
01:33saying that, in principle,
01:35yes, the Strait of Hormuz should be fully reopened by Friday, but practically and operationally, that could take weeks because
01:42the Strait has been shut now for more than or close to four months.
01:46And that is going to take more time.
01:47There's also a major question around the sanctions.
01:50What is in this deal?
01:51The president of the U.S. said yesterday that any relief will be, quote, dependent on their behavior.
01:57The vice president also repeated that message, saying that a lot will depend on whether or not Iran can behave
02:03like a, quote, normal country.
02:06The Europeans yesterday repeated that they will not ease any sanctions until they see a real change on the ground.
02:12But a lot of those questions heavily depend on the text of that memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
02:18For the time being, as I say, it has not been released.
02:21That is a fundamental key point we should stress.
02:25The U.S. administration says it should come out this week.
02:28So the question is still in the air and it remains, is this a good deal?
02:32That is a question that I put to the former National Security Advisor to Donald Trump, John Bolton, yesterday on
02:39Special Report on Euronews.
02:40Let's take a look.
02:43I think it's a very bad deal for the United States.
02:46Trump isn't thinking about the geostrategic implications of the deal.
02:51He's thinking of one thing.
02:53He wants the straight open.
02:54He wants gulf oil on international markets.
02:57He wants the price of gasoline at the pump down.
02:59That's all he cares about.
03:01I think it's a mistake to give this brutal theocracy any of the assets.
03:05I'm happy to give the assets back to Iran when it's under a free government.
03:09That's not where we are now.
03:11The change of leadership is only because we've killed the top 400 or 500 people in the existing regime,
03:16and you're down now to their seconds and deputies.
03:18So, yeah, it's different people, but it's the same fanatic regime.
03:21Trump is desperate for a deal.
03:24He's desperate for a deal, and they have maneuvered him.
03:27They've played him like a violin.
03:28That's why they've got the deal that they want.
03:33And that is, of course, John Bolton speaking to Euronews, saying that this is a deal with one goal in
03:39mind,
03:40and that is to bring down oil prices.
03:42And he is not wrong to some extent because the U.S. president also doubled down on that message,
03:47repeating that oil prices will come down and the stock market is up because of this deal.
03:52But as I say, two fundamental questions in terms of the sanctions, but also the program,
03:58the nuclear enrichment program, who is going to monitor that it is dismantled?
04:02The other piece of breaking news that I want to give to you now, life,
04:06is the president of the U.S. has also put out a statement on Social Truth,
04:10his social media, saying that any reports that the U.S. will pay $300 billion to reconstruct Iran is, quote,
04:18fake news.
04:18But this goes back again to some of the questions around the wording in this deal,
04:23because it seems, however, that in the text there will be a reference to countries wanting to invest in Iran,
04:30which has been heavily bombed for three months.
04:32But the U.S. president repeated this morning, not a single cent of U.S. money will go into Iran.
04:38But as I mentioned, major questions around the fine print of this deal, which for the time being, nobody has
04:45seen.
