00:00Alright, so we've talked turn one, we've talked spotter challenges, Steve LaTarte, now fill us in on the tunnel turn
00:06and what makes it so tough.
00:08Yeah, so turn one is high speed and the challenge is for the spotter. When we get to turn two,
00:12it's a little bit on the crew chief and a little bit on the driver. This is a 165 mile
00:16an hour keyhole you try to get. It's a 90 degree corner, very rough at the bottom. The second lane
00:21is actually growing in popularity, Corey. And the way I look at it, this is one that as a driver
00:26buddy, you're just going to have to figure it out.
00:28Because we talk about one and three, turn two may not finish a lot of passes, but it creates a
00:34ton of speed and a lot of passes into three.
00:36Well, it was designed to be Indianapolis, but there's nothing like it besides this 90 degree corner. I talked to
00:41Brad before he left and you never really feel confident. You never feel cozy through there. The car is always
00:46upset and you're going so fast and you're margin for error. You talk about the keyhole.
00:50You have to be so particular on your turn and angle to get over those bumps straight, to not ask
00:55too much ladder out of the tires. And pucker factors high through the tunnel turn, buddy. Let me tell you,
00:59Dale.
00:59Yeah, Brad did say there's big gains, big losses to be had over there. And that's the, it's kind of
01:04the carrot that you're chasing all the time. You're never going to go through that corner the same twice all
01:10day long.
01:10And every time you approach it, going down that straightaway, you're thinking, hmm, what can I do this time to
01:15be a little bit better? Because I definitely didn't get through there the way I wanted to the last time.
01:19So, and that's going to be the feeling every single time you approach this corner. And so you can make
01:24some big gains on guys that do it wrong, or you can be one of those guys that are chasing
01:28down if you get through there the wrong way.
01:29I need Freddy's binoculars. Can we look over in turn three? I think that's where we're going to find our
01:35Trevor Bain.
01:37Hey, Danielle. Yeah, I'm over here in the flattest corner on the NASCAR circuit. Six degrees of banking in turn
01:42three at Pocono.
01:43And you can see there's a lot of these cuts and grooves and cracks in this racetrack. And this material
01:49that they fill these cracks with is very soft.
01:52It's very squishy, but it makes the cars slide around a lot. So I always hear about the tunnel turn.
01:57It stills a ton of thunder.
01:58But if you want to be fast, you got to be good in this flat corner down in turn three.
02:02The car is going to get down into the corner.
02:04It's going to slide around. The driver has a lot of options now. Like Dale talked about, the groove widening
02:09out in turn two.
02:09It has widened out a lot in turn three. But the key is getting off this corner. As we lead
02:14off a turn three to what turn four, it says over here on the wall,
02:18you're going to need speed off of this because you've got almost three quarters of a mile down the front
02:22stretch in a drag race.
02:24This is where it starts at.
02:27Trevor, thank you. And you see him there now. Corey, what is that he's got in his hand?
02:33It looks like an air horn, an electric-powered air horn.
02:37Nothing surprises me if he's holding something in his hand. It's whether it be a flamethrower or an airplane.
02:41Right, a bazooka. I mean, there's no telling. And by the way, guys, this is Denny Hamlin.
02:45A different kind of look in the Kings Hawaiian blue and yellow fire suit. But keep your eye on that
02:52car.
02:52It's starting out front on the pole. We'll see a day from Pocono.
02:57Up next, the man. I see a lot of 12 flags around here. A lot of 12 t-shirts from
03:02these fans.
03:02They are psyched to see our next guest, Ryan Blaney, live at the desk right after this.
03:08Go, Blaney!
03:14Next weekend, we're heading to San Diego as Naval Base Coronado becomes the first active military base to host NASCAR
03:23racing right there on that boat.
03:26We cannot wait. Coverage begins with a special 90-minute free ratio. Corey, I can't wait.
03:31I don't know if there's been a race I've been more excited to go to, Ryan, than this one here.
03:36Racing trucks on Friday. Get to watch you guys cut some laps on Sunday. It's going to be an incredible
03:40race.
03:41Hey, look who we got here.
03:43Hey, Ryan Blaney.
03:44NASCAR Cup Series champion driver of the number 12, Team Penske Ford.
03:48Are you as psyched as we are?
03:50Yeah. I'm trying to be as psyched as the crowd behind me.
03:53They're a little psyched.
03:56They love you.
03:56Yeah, I've been fortunate to have a great fan base in Pocono, and speaking of San Diego next week, you
04:02know, like y'all said, it's going to be unbelievable.
04:04I got the chance to go out there, you know, a couple times this year, and, you know, the Navy
04:11has been unbelievable to us.
04:12It's been a lot of fun to work with them, meet a bunch of people that are on base, and
04:16it's going to be a blast.
04:17But today, I'm looking forward to it also.
04:20Brian, I feel like your acting career is taking some traction, buddy.
04:23Or should I say Amish Wimsley, the undercover doc was, I love those things, man.
04:29And you look like you had a freaking blast with it.
04:32How was that experience?
04:33I appreciate undercovers and Eli Manning for allowing me to do that, asking me to do that.
04:38And I tell you, it was nerve-wracking.
04:40It was nerve-wracking because we sat in makeup for a couple hours to put the biggest nose known to
04:45man on me.
04:46And then they just kind of release you into the wild, you know, for five or six hours.
04:51They're like, good luck.
04:52Don't get caught.
04:53Don't break character.
04:55And it was a blast, though.
04:56I think people enjoyed it.
04:58I definitely had a ball being somebody else and messing with people and making them think I was like an
05:0280-year-old English person.
05:04But, yeah, that was a blast.
05:05I'm happy people enjoyed it.
05:06Like I said, I appreciate, you know, Amazon and those folks for letting me do it.
05:09Yeah, you can see it here on Prime, not a shameless plug.
05:12You were just fantastic in it.
05:14If you need a good laugh, Ryan is there to provide it.
05:18And over the years, we've seen you, maybe not in this role as an old British man with a huge
05:24honker,
05:24but we have seen you in, like, different films and television shows.
05:28If you were not a race car driver, Blaney, would you be an actor?
05:31No.
05:31Because I feel like you, like, relish these roles.
05:34I enjoy it.
05:35I've been fortunate to get asked to do some of that stuff.
05:38And I couldn't do it all the time.
05:43I like doing it every now and then and messing around with it.
05:46It's fun.
05:47It's fun not being yourself for a little bit, like playing a character.
05:50It's pretty neat.
05:51But, yeah, I don't know if I'd ever go that route full time.
05:55You talk about not being yourself or in a disguise, if you will.
05:59All I hear about Fords are this, Fords are that, Fords are slow.
06:02Then I look, oh, no, you're third in points.
06:04So how are Fords so bad and yet you're doing so good?
06:07What's Ryan Blaney doing that everyone else can't do?
06:10Well, we got a great team around us.
06:12I mean, you know, Jonathan's done an amazing job of maximizing days.
06:16You know, maybe where we haven't had the speed that maybe we want,
06:18we've done a great job of executing and not making mistakes
06:22and just getting the most out of our days.
06:23So that side, I'm incredibly proud of our 12 group for doing.
06:28And now we've just got to find a little bit on the speed end to, you know,
06:32kind of go with the execution side.
06:33Look at that, a beautiful 2008 Ryan Newman, Daytona 500 throwback scheme we have today.
06:39Excited for it to be on the track,
06:40and hopefully we can end up in the same spot where Ryan did all those years ago.
06:43Well, I was going to say, you've done it before, right, as a two-time Pocono winner,
06:47got your first one here in 2017.
06:49So I know it's a special place for you.
06:51But it's also extremely difficult, Ryan.
06:53Given your starting position, you and Hassler, what you found out in P&Q yesterday,
06:57what's your outlook?
06:59What's the potential for a good day here?
07:00Yeah, this place is always, I've always enjoyed it.
07:03Coming here, like I said, a lot of special memories here in 2017 with the Wood Brothers,
07:07my first cup win, battling Kevin Harvick.
07:10That was a lot of fun memories that day.
07:13And then a couple years ago, we were able to go back to Victory Lane, you know,
07:15seven years later and, you know, to have my family, my wife and her family,
07:21and Victory Lane, they're from the area.
07:22That was really cool a couple years ago.
07:24Hopefully we can do that again.
07:25But this place, I always just kind of, they're compromising here a lot.
07:29You know, the three ends are completely different.
07:32You're kind of just living with, you know, do I want to be good in one and three
07:35and just live in the tunnel or am I using here a lot?
07:37You know, the three ends are completely different.
07:40You're kind of just living with, you know, do I want to be good in one and three
07:42and just live in the tunnel?
07:44Finish line, then you still have about another mile to go.
07:46That's when you're like, okay, what do I do?
07:48What are my competitors going to do?
07:49How do you go attack a restart here in the one at Pocono?
07:52Yeah, I mean, you obviously always want to be on the offensive, but you can't.
07:55Sometimes you just don't get the run or things like that.
07:57So it's just realizing, number one, the choose is big.
08:00You know, hey, do I, I think the outside is kind of preferred,
08:03but do you want to jump up a row on the inside?
08:06Maybe take a chance.
08:07That gives you a chance of bottom of three going into turn one.
08:10But the thing with the bottom of three into turn one is you hope you get clear
08:14by the time you exit one, because if you're bottom of three down the backstretch,
08:17then you're going straight backwards.
08:18So it's always about kind of timing your runs.
08:21Where do you want to be?
08:22What push do you get?
08:23And that varies where you're at in the pack.
08:25You know, it varies if you're on the front row, the fifth row, the 10th row.
08:28All of it just kind of, you're making decisions in the moment,
08:31and you just hope that you make the right one.
08:33Well, these fans are hoping you do too,
08:35because there's a lot of 12 gear behind us.
08:37Thank you so much for making them happy and put on a good show today.
08:40We wish you the best of luck, Ryan.
08:42Thank you guys for being here.
08:43Yeah.
08:44Appreciate y'all having me.
08:45Thanks, Blaney.
08:46It was 20 years ago this week that a rookie from Virginia
08:50made a name for himself here at Pocono.
08:57Car number 11, Danny Hamlin,
08:59making his very first start ever at Pocono Speedway.
09:02Hamlin says his car is good enough,
09:05but he is good enough to win the race.
09:07Oh, the leader's in trouble.
09:09You can see the hole.
09:11If that thing flies apart, it'll rip.
09:15Hamlin, the rookie, starts on the pole,
09:18falls to 40th, then wins the Pocono 500.
09:22Come back from that balloon tire,
09:24I couldn't believe I thought a race was over.
09:26You can't hold a sound.
09:29Kenny Hamlin at arguably his best racetrack here at Pocono,
09:32and I asked you yesterday,
09:35is this one of the best stretches of your career?
09:37You immediately said no question.
09:39Why is it clicking so well at 45?
09:42It's just got a good rhythm.
09:43I mean, going to the racetrack,
09:44obviously very confident and feel like, you know,
09:47we're really kind of dialed in on, you know,
09:50what we need out of the car.
09:51They're getting it for me week in, week out.
09:54And so, you know, it comes down to, you know,
09:56driving a really fast car,
09:57and those guys, you know, just doing a great job.
09:59And pit crew as well.
10:00They're just doing a great job executing week in, week out.
10:04So, yeah, things are clicking,
10:06and momentum's high right now.
10:08We've got to just keep it going.
10:09Trying to win three in a row for the first time in your career.
10:11There aren't many firsts left, but this is one of them.
10:14You've been in this position before,
10:15but not at your best racetrack.
10:17Is this your best shot to pull it off?
10:19I mean, certainly you would think so.
10:22And, you know, we're coming to a racetrack here.
10:25We feel very confident in, obviously, starting up front.
10:28Hopefully, we'll stay there today.
10:30But, yeah, you know, certainly it's one of the best,
10:32if not the best opportunity.
10:34There you go.
10:34We'll see if Danny Hamlin can pull it off
10:36because win number eight at Pocono
10:38could be his third straight here in 2026.
10:41He's done just about everything, I feel like, right?
10:43Maybe you've got to win that championship.
10:45Today he has a chance in that championship.
10:46Today he has a chance for the first time
10:48to win three consecutive races.
10:50But you look at Danny Hamlin versus the field here, Corey.
10:53There is no question he is a king of Pocono.
10:55I'm betting the house on Danny Hamlin against the field.
10:58It's the best spot.
11:00And you talk about momentum and a heater.
11:02The 11 car is right smack in the middle of it.
11:05Yeah.
11:06Danny Hamlin is 51 points behind Tyler Reddick entering today.
11:10Based on their performances at the upcoming tracks,
11:13Racing Insights is projecting that Hamlin could pass Reddick
11:18after Richmond.
11:20That's in nine races.
11:21Corey, do you see this happening?
11:23Can Danny Hamlin close the gap?
11:25Well, if we're going to gain this hypothetical scenario out,
11:27the next two weeks are going to be crucial.
11:29Because assuming he does well here,
11:30he has to hold serve and be within 10 points of the 45
11:34the next two races of the road courses.
11:36Then the 11th team has to outpoint that 45
11:40by seven points of race
11:43all the way up to the beginning of the chase.
11:45Can the 11 do it?
11:46What do you all think?
11:47Can the 11 do it?
11:48Okay.
11:49I think so.
11:50We got a couple of 11 fans back here.
11:52But Tyler Reddick is saying,
11:54not so fast, buddy.
11:55I am still the points leader.
11:56I have been all season.
11:58So it'll be interesting to watch
12:00this kind of cat and mouse game
12:02between Denny and, oh, by the way,
12:03the driver that he employs
12:05and the team he owns at 2311.
12:07Well, after five races,
12:07I thought that the regular season was already wrapped up.
12:09So the fact that we're sitting here
12:10talking about a scenario where the 11 car
12:12can catch the guy that won five
12:14out of the first seven races is incredible.
12:17All right.
12:18Let's go down to Kim Kuhn with Tyler Reddick.
12:21Thanks, Danielle.
12:21Tyler coming off his first finish
12:23outside the top 15 this year.
12:25We just talked.
12:26Denny has closed the gap to your league
12:28considerably over the last few weeks.
12:29How closely are you paying attention
12:31to what the 11 team is doing?
12:33Yeah, I mean, I think outside of points,
12:36you know, week in and week out,
12:38you know, the 11 is always really strong.
12:39So I wouldn't say it's anything new for us.
12:41You know, we try and gauge where we're at
12:43compared, you know, to other Toyota teammates.
12:46And the 11 has been really, really strong consistently.
12:48So, yeah, I mean, we are battling for the same spot.
12:51And, I mean, we knew in this system,
12:54if you have a really bad day, it's going to bite you.
12:56And Sunday went about as worst case as it could go
13:00with us crashing out and the 11 winning the race.
13:02So, yeah, I mean, I think for us,
13:04if we just kind of get back to it,
13:07continue to have top five finishes,
13:10you know, we got some tracks coming up
13:11that should be good for us as well.
13:12So everything should be fine.
13:15We just got to get back to it.
13:16Would be really nice.
13:17Selfishly, it also wins some races along the way.
13:19It's been a minute.
13:20So, yeah, I'd like to win today.
13:22That'd be really nice.
13:22On a day where so many different things can happen strategy-wise,
13:25how much information do you want from your crew chief, Billy Scott,
13:28on this guy's racing you, but he's on these tires,
13:30he's on this strategy.
13:31How much information is too much?
13:33Yeah, I don't know if we've ever really hit that mark
13:35when it comes to, like, a place like Pocono.
13:38You know, it is important to know who's on your strategy,
13:41who you're racing in that moment and who you're not.
13:43So I feel like at a place like this
13:45and just with how traffic is,
13:47even at a tire deficit,
13:48you can work some magic, if you will,
13:51and make it really hard for the cars behind to get past you.
13:53So, yeah, for us, I mean,
13:55we just had really, really good speed yesterday in practice.
13:58I kind of came really close to biting the dust in qualifying.
14:02Thankfully, you know, we didn't crash,
14:04but it cost us a lot of time starting the lap.
14:07So I guess, if anything,
14:08just really thankful that we still qualified 16th
14:10with a really bad start to the lap.
14:13But, yeah, I mean, our supply house Camry's got really good speed,
14:15and I'm excited for what today has held for us.
14:18Thanks, Tyler.
14:19Man, this is going to be a fun battle, Kim,
14:22to keep your eye on.
14:23First and second in points,
14:24Tyler Reddick, Denny Hamlin.
14:26Tyler had that first DNF of the season last week.
14:28That's how Denny was able to gain such an advantage
14:31and then wind up in victory lane on top of it.
14:34Well, and he just mentioned he qualified 16th,
14:36so his journey for stage points
14:38is going to be a little bit tougher for the stage one.
14:41And you've got Denny starting to pull
14:42with stage points up for grabs.
14:44So, man, it's going to be so dicey.
14:45You're going to have to go follow each and every stage
14:48because you never know what's going to happen.
14:50They follow each and every week.
14:52Best fans in sports, diehards coming out to Pocono
14:55each and every year, guys.
14:56Thanks for spending part of the pre-race with us.
14:58Enjoy 400 miles.
15:01Our guest analyst, he's got some ground to make up,
15:04but he told us earlier he thinks he has the car to do it.
15:07Keep your eye on a Pocono winner.
15:09Got it done here in 2011.
15:11Brad Kieslowski, we are less than 12 minutes
15:14until the command.
15:15We're taking you all the way to the drop of the green.
15:17Stay with us.
15:18It's NASCAR Live from Pocono.
15:25Welcome back to NASCAR Live from the Grid,
15:28presented by Burger King.
15:32It's a gorgeous Sunday for racing.
15:34NASCAR moving the race up two hours
15:36so we can get all 400 miles.
15:39And Danielle Trotta alongside NASCAR driver Corey LaJoy.
15:42It's been an incredible first hour.
15:44Brad Kieslowski was our guest analyst
15:45before he had to hop into the seat there.
15:48What have you learned over the last 60 minutes or so?
15:51That's a great question because I've talked,
15:53we've heard about from all the competitors
15:55about one corner or another.
15:57Problem is you got to run all of them all the time.
15:59So I don't really know which one guys are hedging their bets to
16:01on the handling of these cars.
16:03So I think you're going to see some guys
16:04really exceptional through the tunnel.
16:06Trevor talked about turn three.
16:08And then you got the restarts in turn one.
16:09So that's why Pocono is the tricky trying.
16:11Let's send it upstairs because I want to hear
16:13from Adam Alexander.
16:14Double A, what have you learned watching the pre-ratio?
16:17I learned the mustache war is real.
16:19LaJoy, Blaney, a nice one-two punch.
16:22Great having Blaney on NASCAR Live.
16:24Yeah, we talked about moving the race up
16:25to one o'clock, two hours.
16:27We do have weather that's coming later in the day.
16:29Will that change some of the strategy for the teams?
16:31I learned what we expected was real with the crowd.
16:33The infield was full.
16:34The grandstands were full.
16:35You and I just made the trip from in there to out here.
16:38This place is full and electric.
16:40It's a great day for a race.
16:41You absolutely cannot beat the passion of Pocono.
16:44And I love the fact that Dale Jr.
16:47goes from analyst and hall for a race.
16:49You absolutely cannot beat the passion of Pocono.
16:52And I love the fact that Dale Jr.
16:54goes from analyst...
16:58Please rise as you are able, remove your hats
17:02and veterans render a hand salute
17:04as the James I. O'Neill High School Army Junior ROTC Color Guard
17:09presents our nation's colors.
17:14Here to offer today's invocation, please welcome President and Senior Chaplain
17:20of Motor Racing Outreach, Billy Mulder.
17:24Today's invocation, please welcome President and Senior Chaplain
17:28of Motor Racing Outreach, Billy Mulder.
17:31...family and loved ones as only you can.
17:34Father, bless those who protect our freedom at home and abroad,
17:37allowing us to do what we love each day.
17:40Humbly and gratefully, in Christ's name, we pray.
17:44And everybody says, Amen.
17:48Here to perform our national anthem, please welcome retired first class
17:53Navy Petty Officer, General Wilson, along with ASL signer, Taylor Beagle.
18:00Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
18:08What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
18:16Whose broad stripes and bright stars gleaming
18:22Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the pale
18:28The bombs bursting in air
18:34Gave proof through the night
18:39That our flag was still there
18:48Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet
19:03O'er the land of the free
19:10And the home of the brave
19:25From the F-16 Viper Demo Team from Shaw Air Force Base, NASCAR Live from the Grid, presented by Burger
19:34King, continues next.
19:43NASCAR Live from the Grid is brought to you by Burger King.
19:48At BK, happy your way.
19:52It's time now for Kings of the Track, presented by Burger King.
19:56Mr. Corey LaJoy, who's your king here at the Tricky Triangle?
19:59Daniel, I'm glad you asked, because we are here. We're celebrating America's 250th birthday. We've got the World Cup here.
20:05We've got games in LA. We've got games in New York, Kansas City, all over the globe.
20:10Hell, we're even fighting the White House long. But the real ones are right here in Pocono, Pennsylvania, for the
20:17NASCAR Cup Series. Another sellout four years in a row. You guys are the kings of the track this weekend.
20:24I like it. The roar of the crowd here never gets old. And Denny Hamlin, it's not getting old, in
20:31my opinion, to watch what he's doing. The hottest driver in NASCAR right now. How can he not be a
20:35king of Pocono?
20:36He literally holds the record for more wins here than anybody else with seven and counting. Yesterday, he scored his
20:42sixth career pole and broke a tie with Ken Schrader and Bill Elliott for the most all-time.
20:47And, oh, by the way, yeah, he's P1. So, he's my king of the racetrack. Let's send it upstairs and
20:53find out what the boys are thinking and join Steve Lettard, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Adam Alexander.
20:58Thank you, Danielle. And I love where you went there, because we all know Denny Hamlin has been red hot
21:03as we have begun this summer stretch in NASCAR. Where do you go, kings of the track, Dale?
21:07Well, I think that speed's always important at the racetrack, but no more important here than anyone else is clean
21:13air.
21:13So, we've seen at this racetrack, even last year with Chase Briscoe, if you can get your car out front,
21:19if that crew chief can have the strategy to put you at the front of the field late, you've got
21:23a great shot at winning this race and controlling the field.
21:25Well, Dale wants speed, because he's the driver. He's sitting in the seat, and the faster it is, the easier
21:29it is for him.
21:30For me, I want him to create some fuel mileage for me, because I have to call it strategy.
21:33So, the king here is having okay speed with burning a little less fuel than your competitor open up that
21:39playbook.
21:39But clean air has always been king here at Pocono. The ones that complain about it later didn't watch the
21:44previous ten races, because you mentioned DeBriscoe, right?
21:47They were super aggressive last year, got out front, held to that track position to go all the way to
21:51the win.
21:51I'm going to throw another name out here when we talk about kings of the track.
21:54Danielle says Denny Hamlin, but someone that's been very quiet, but starting on the front row with DH today, is
22:01Kyle Larson.
22:02They have methodically been working their way into the equation.
22:06Qualified great yesterday, been running pretty solid lately. Keep an eye on number five today.
22:10Absolutely. New Chevrolet body. They're starting to extract the speed out of this car.
22:14We've seen it the last several weeks as five cars led laps and been up front.
22:18If we're going to go through all three manufacturers, the king for me coming here, Ryan Blaney in that Ford.
22:22I know Ford's been down. Two wins here at the Triangle. Maybe he can make it three today.
22:27Let's go trackside now and fire the engines at Pocono Raceway.
22:34Pocono Raceway. Here to say the most famous words in motorsports, please welcome founding father, Benjamin Franklin, along with flag
22:45maker, Betsy Ross.
22:47Welcome to the Pocono Raceway. Happy Flag Day and happy 250th birthday, America.
22:55Gentlemen, start your engines.
23:04That felt very official.
23:07And now we can race in the Poconos.
23:10We're Green Next on Prime.
23:33We'll be green next to the Pocono Raceway.
23:41I'm looking forward to the Pocono Raceway.
23:47Come away, come away, keep going.

29:36That's a great point, Marty. Lay a foundation today, so you have that confidence you need going to San Diego
29:41next week and Sonoma two weeks from now.
29:44Let's do our Harbor Freight Tools for Victory.
29:47We talk a lot about Pocono and the challenges of the three corners. Handling is always a key, but as
29:54I said earlier, and I'll go back to it again,
29:56fuel mileage, fuel mileage, fuel mileage. You have to be efficient because it just opens up opportunities for different strategies.
30:02Yeah, the restarts. We want control of the race. We want to be at the front of the field throughout
30:07this event,
30:08but you can lose control of that race by getting these restarts wrong. Having that pusher and that second row
30:13stay committed to you down into turn one will be important.
30:16Don't get taken three wide by somebody who's antsy back there in row two, three, or four.
30:19And then execute better than I did by skipping it. Execution, the second one right there. And that's really the
30:24key, right?
30:25We talk about fuel mileage and strategy. Dale, you talk about the restarts. All of that's great, but it doesn't
30:30take but one little trip up,
30:31and you get behind. And even though it's a 400-mile race, we're looking at maybe four pit stops for
30:35the winner.
30:36There's not a lot of time to recover.
30:37The devil is in the details.
30:39I know. Oh, boy.
30:41Put a mark by his name. Let's go back downstairs and hear from our pit reporters one more time.
30:46What do you have for us, Trevor?
30:47Yeah, guys, I'm getting my eyes fixed on these legacy Motor Club Toyotas of John Hunter Nemechek and Eric Jones.
30:53We see them both qualifying inside the top ten here at Pocono, which is kind of a big jump for
30:58them when you look at their past results at this place.
31:00I watched this organization over the last couple years and have been fortunate to be a small part of it,
31:05and they talk so much about culture building.
31:07Culture building doesn't show up overnight.
31:09The results don't come, but the last couple weeks, they put the competition on notice, showing that their Toyotas are
31:14getting quicker, too.
31:15Kim?
31:16Well, Trevor, Chase Elliott has the best average finish at Pocono in the next-gen car of any driver in
31:21the field, so they're hoping for a big day.
31:23But it's going to be an uphill battle after qualifying 23rd, but the number nine team, very optimistic about the
31:29race car they have this weekend.
31:31Crew chief Alan Gustafson said the car is better than it qualified.
31:33We have no doubt about that.
31:35So I asked him what's going to be key for the early part of this race, starting deeper in the
31:39field, and he told me,
31:40we have got to race our way into at least the top 15th position to be able to open up
31:45our strategy options and take advantage of that speed, Marty.
31:48Kim, Chase Briscoe is the defending winner here at Pocono, and you heard him say on NASCAR Live,
31:51the pressure here last year was to prove that I belong behind the wheel of a Joe Gibbs racing car.
31:57He told me earlier this week the pressure is similar this weekend, but the goal is different.
32:01We feel like we should be a championship-contending team.
32:04In order to do that, we're 100 points outside the top five.
32:08We need to be in that top five by the end of the regular season.
32:11That only comes with wins, and this might be one of our best chances to do it today.
32:16Briscoe has won here, so has Alex Bowman.
32:18Here's 48 Radio.
32:20Dude, it's old-time racing.
32:21The crowd's packed.
32:22Traffic sucks.
32:23We got all kinds of cool stuff we can do on Pier Road.
32:25This is awesome.
32:25Yeah, man, I'm here for it.
32:26Let's go.
32:27Have a good day.
32:28Four straight weeks.
32:29We've got a sell-out crowd.
32:30This place is awesome.
32:33The atmosphere is electric.
32:35Denny Hamlin, the all-time wins leader here on the pole.
32:38He takes the outside lane to his left.
32:41The Randy Champ.
32:42We are green in the Poconos.
32:59Big move by Reddick around the top.
33:02He's going to grab a few rows, get on the outside of 12-carved laney.
33:06Stay down to the outside wall, down the back straightaway.
33:09He must have picked up four or five spots right there, just taking that third groove around the top.
33:14Trying to get more here.
33:16Going three-wide into the tunnel turn around the outside of Byron.
33:19Yeah, I don't think Byron knew he was there.
33:20We'll see if they get it cleaned out.
33:22Reddick will choose the lift, get back in line.
33:24Up front, we have the seventh and outside of Hamlin.
33:26Hamlin almost just protecting the bottom, allowing the seventh to have that top line into that flat turn three that
33:32Trevor talked about in the pre-race.
33:33Make note of this, Larson inside lane, gets the race lead, lap one.
33:37Yeah, absolutely good organization on that inside lane.
33:39I think Denny's going to lose second place right here to Suarez.
33:44Suarez using the momentum around the top.
33:47He's still side-by-side right here down into turn one and two.
33:51Briscoe out of line, racing his teammate Ty Gibbs, 19-54, racing for fourth.
33:58We saw yesterday in the O'Reilly race a turn one accident.
34:01You see the difference between a Saturday and a Sunday.
34:04So much experience that everyone tiptoed.
34:06Maybe not Reddick, who was three-wide around the top, but the rest of the field kind of organizing it.
34:10As I said, we had that blue car jump out line.
34:12I think it was Blaney.
34:13Battle for second.
34:14Still raging, guys.
34:15Pretty interesting to see Denny on the inside here fighting for this.
34:19Down into turn three again.
34:22Suarez on the top of the racetrack.
34:23A little bit of resin in this second groove.
34:25Still there from years ago.
34:28They applied that resin several years ago.
34:30Still giving a little bit of grip to that outside line.
34:32That's why Suarez is able to stay up there.
34:34He's going to finally possibly make the pass to open, and he's going to try to side-draft some more.
34:38This place will tease you, right?
34:40Just when you think someone's got it, the rally comes from the other lane.
34:44Briscoe does get by Gibbs, and now Hamlin up the second.
34:47Oh, man.
34:48Suarez right across the nose of the 19.
34:50Briscoe has to get up the racetrack and find some grip.
34:56Then he didn't want to get that spot up.
34:58Really interesting to see him continue to side-draft, continue to fight, take his time,
35:02take a measured approach to be able to take that second spot.
35:05He's got clean air.
35:06It'll be interesting to see if he can drive and run down that five car out in the lead.
35:11Look back behind him.
35:12Redding went from 16th to 10th.
35:14You guys talked about his advancement on the opening lap, but now going to lose that final spot in the
35:19top 10.
35:20Maybe Ryan Blaney there in the 12.
35:22Three wide off the turn three.
35:24They're getting after it early here.
35:26I like the 41's decision.
35:28I don't mind the second lane, but the third lane definitely can give you a big trouble on exit.
35:32He got in line, and because of that, he's actually going to go back on the offense.
35:36You see him now in line moving forward as we see now the 54 and the 19 side-by-side
35:41for fourth.
35:44Oh, I love what Frisco did right there.
35:46He just rolled the middle and really committed to the gas.
35:48See if the momentum's enough.
35:49It is.
35:51This whole track, we talked about three distinct corners as we ride on board with Gibbs on the Monster Energy.
35:57As we head into the tunnel, this is what I talked about, that kind of very narrow entry, picks up
36:02the gas.
36:02But it's kind of like corner, momentum down the straightaway.
36:06Corner, momentum down the straightaway.
36:07When you get off the line, can you recover, or are you going to lose positions?
36:12Monster Energy on board camera.
36:14Very good, tight right there, guys.
36:16Watch the 19 drive away just a little bit tight through the center of the corner there.
36:20That turn three is the most important corner because it leads onto this long straightaway.
36:23If you get off that corner poorly, you could be, you know, in a bad spot here with cars catching
36:28you down this straightaway into turn one.
36:30You know, something else to watch, Steve.
36:32We saw this yesterday in the O'Reilly race.
36:34I saw a lot of debris floating around on the front straightaway.
36:37You get that on the grill.
36:38I mean, what does that do to challenge you?
36:40So the cup car is not as sensitive as the O'Reilly cars.
36:43Their grill openings are actually basically wide open.
36:45It'll go up in there as we ride on board with Cedric on the Ford camera.
36:49So these cars, surprisingly enough, the debris shouldn't overheat.
36:54Now, it can get in the position where it starves the engine for a little air and start to hurt
36:57power.
36:57But unfortunately, we kind of never know because it's underneath the hood, kind of out of sight.
37:05Trying to get a little organized here.
37:06I believe that's 16 of A.J. Allmendinger out of line.
37:09And 41 of Colt Custer trying to fight for another spot here.
37:1316 might be able to get in there, clear him right there off the turn three.
37:18Christopher Bell right behind these two, trying to carry momentum down the straightaway.
37:21Maybe trying to put a pass together on Colt Custer here on the interest of turn one.
37:27Out of line, top of your screen.
37:28That cast to roll forward up a bunch of spots.
37:31Bell pulls out of line.
37:32Brad doing a nice job up eight spots.
37:34Yeah, nice to be plus eight coming from the back.
37:37Brad told us on NASCAR Live this has been a good track for us.
37:41And the only one better in that category was Josefart plus nine.
37:45Now Bubba Wallace plus ten.
37:46Another driver coming from the back.
37:48Crashed yesterday in qualifying.
37:50And, Steve, we were like, oh, probably a backup car.
37:52Not the case.
37:53They repaired the primary with those changes.
37:55He still comes from the rear.
37:57Yeah, I wasn't even probably.
37:58I just assumed it was a backup.
38:00Huge damage for the 23.
38:01It's really remarkable how kind of these cars can be repaired, how modular they are.
38:07You can unbolt the front nose, unbolt the front cliff, change the parts as needed with confidence.
38:16Here's Brad right there, that blue and green car right behind the 23 of Bubba.
38:21And I think the experience between these two, remember they started together on the front row.
38:24So while they're racing each other, I talked about the momentum.
38:26So we're going to see if Bubba pulls out of line, does Brad kind of push him through?
38:30Instead of trying to attack the 23, so you see the 23 up the racetrack a little bit.
38:34He'll see if he can get to the outside of the three.
38:36Probably not.
38:37But he might have momentum off the top.
38:39If he pulls down low, maybe the six tries to go with him.
38:43Back of row, the 60 of Fries.
38:45Another RFK forward.
38:46Oh, SVG likes that three-wide thought.
38:49And he's going to stick it down in there in a tunnel turn.
38:51Try to get that spot away.
38:54Maybe SVG is going to have a nose ahead there.
38:59Kyle Larson leads as we work lafayette.
39:02We remember Kyle Busch.
39:09Oh.
39:10Oh.
39:13Oh.
39:14Oh.
39:15Oh.
39:15Oh.
39:16Oh.
39:16Oh.
39:22Oh.
