Chateau DIY - Season 11 - Episode 02
Transcript
00:01Across France, there are thousands of spectacular chateaux,
00:06often neglected and run down.
00:09Oh, my goodness.
00:10They weren't in the state of it.
00:12In desperate need of loving restoration.
00:15He's in his element down there doing this.
00:18Now being brought back to life by brave new owners.
00:22Fingers crossed that it's actually going to work when it's finished.
00:26Who are turning them into extraordinary homes.
00:29I feel quite emotional about it. I love it.
00:32And exciting businesses.
00:35The day has gone swimmingly well.
00:38Taking on monumental challenges.
00:42Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:43With highs.
00:45I just think it's got elegance and I love that.
00:48As well as lows.
00:50Terry, where's the water in here?
00:52But with ambitious ideas.
00:54Terrace here, kitchen there, right next to the river, hook out a trout.
00:58And hard work.
01:00Comes great joy.
01:02It's absolutely fantastic.
01:05As they fulfil their dream.
01:08Cheers.
01:08Cheers, honey.
01:09To be custodians of their very own castle.
01:15Today.
01:17They're trusting me to clean crystals.
01:20One family take on an extravagant new challenge.
01:24This is going to take a long time.
01:27This pair face a risky renovation job.
01:31I don't do heights at all.
01:33Terrifying.
01:34Absolutely terrifying.
01:38And one couple clash over their latest restoration project.
01:43Are you sure it goes?
01:44Because there's a lot of colour.
01:46I think it's stunning.
01:48If it was me, this would be painted magnolia.
01:58In the picturesque region of Normandy in northern France
02:02is the delightful 18th century Château de la Lasselle.
02:09It comprises 25 rooms.
02:13And 21 acres.
02:16And it stood abandoned for four decades.
02:21Until it won over the hearts of former pet shop owner Terry.
02:25It did.
02:26And fiancé Ashley from Middlesbrough.
02:29When we bought La Lasselle,
02:31I think the one thing that we loved was the originality of it.
02:34How much of the original features were still here.
02:36And that's always been kind of our mantra.
02:39It's a restoration rather than a renovation.
02:41A renovation would have been done two years ago.
02:43Yeah, definitely.
02:44And obviously when people visit,
02:45we want it to be an experience for them.
02:47So they're not coming just to stay in a room
02:50that they could stop anywhere.
02:51This is going to be a memorable experience for them.
02:54Hopefully.
02:55It will.
03:01Located an hour's drive from Le Mans,
03:05Terry and Ashley bought the Château
03:08for £250,000 in 2021.
03:13I did put it that way up.
03:15And set about building a high-end holiday let's business.
03:20Keeping them company here are Terry's mum, Tracy,
03:2511-year-old nephew, Jonathan,
03:28and Dachshund, Patrick.
03:33They've already worked wonders
03:35creating their first opulent guest suite,
03:40which includes a magnificent Edwardian-style salon,
03:47a majestic bedroom,
03:52and a stylish en suite.
03:58Wow.
03:59I was just at Versailles,
04:01and I think they've outdone Versailles.
04:03It's so good.
04:06When we saw them last summer,
04:08they started to create an even grander two-bedroom suite,
04:13which they're eager to make the showpiece of the Château.
04:17But already they've decided to adapt their grand plan
04:22for the master bedroom walls.
04:25So the idea was to paint it red
04:27to give us that nice, deep, rich colour.
04:29But it didn't feel elegant enough.
04:32So we decided to create a, like, fake wood effect,
04:36so Trompe-Loi, here in France it's called,
04:39and it's just creating a whole woodgrain effect
04:42for the entire room.
04:44Obviously, it's been a tall order.
04:46It took us about four weeks to do.
04:48An easy job, then?
04:49Yeah.
04:50It looks absolutely fantastic.
04:52It's so cool in this world, yeah.
04:53It really is.
04:54Yeah.
04:57Today, whilst Ashley heads to the suite salon
05:00to add another coat of paint,
05:03Terry is eager to finish off the ornate mouldings
05:06for the bedroom walls.
05:08What I need to do is mark out
05:10where each of these corner pieces are going.
05:13I've created a template,
05:15so I'm getting the exact same point,
05:18and then that gives me two points
05:20just to work where the mouldings are going.
05:22So I'll get some contact adhesive on the back of these,
05:25stick these on,
05:26and then I can start adding the trimming.
05:32Aiming for classic French elegance,
05:35Terry has created the centre panel mouldings himself.
05:39So we've cast it out of resin,
05:42and then we give it a paint in gold.
05:44We put some wax on,
05:46just give it a bit of age,
05:47and then once it's on the wall,
05:48we go over and highlight the gold a bit more prominent.
05:50We need to make it look 200 years old, really.
05:58Doing jobs like this,
05:59it's fantastic because it's going to be unique to us.
06:02I think I've always been, like, quite creative and stuff.
06:05As a kid, I always had stuff like Lego and Macano.
06:11Terry's eye for detail has certainly not been lost on Ashley.
06:15He has some unbelievable skills
06:18in terms of being able to see something,
06:20have a vision, and then be able to create it as well.
06:23We've done all sorts together.
06:25We've built cars.
06:26We've renovated our house in the UK as well,
06:28but nothing on a chateau scale.
06:32With the bespoke mouldings painted,
06:36Terry just needs to attach them to the wall.
06:40All we're doing is just putting a contact adhesive on,
06:45and then we're popping a little screw in
06:48just to hold it in place,
06:49just so it doesn't slide down the wall.
06:57Last one.
07:00With the job complete,
07:02the walls have an extra touch of charm and character.
07:07But with a salon to get up to scratch
07:09and a second bedroom to bring back to life,
07:13Terry and Ashley's extravagant vision
07:16is only just getting started.
07:26Further west, in the stunning region of Brittany,
07:30lies the dilapidated Moulin du Quenon.
07:34This crumbling flour mill
07:36dates back to the 13th century
07:39and had been left abandoned for over 40 years.
07:44Inside, it was a total mess
07:47and had been ransacked by trespassers.
07:51The huge property is spread over five floors,
07:55has a giant concrete silo for storing grain,
07:59and comes with its own sheet.
08:04This colossal restoration project
08:06is just the latest
08:08for experienced chateau renovators Donna and Paul.
08:13Our plan was to take it easy,
08:15but on a weak moment,
08:16I was surfing the net
08:18and I managed to find this particular property.
08:20When I got the first view of the mill,
08:24I mean, it's pretty breathtaking.
08:26Then I walked in the front door
08:28and saw floor after floor
08:33of mill equipment
08:35bordered up windows.
08:36There were also holes in the roof.
08:38There's something about the place
08:39that kind of just captured us both,
08:42didn't it?
08:43The insanity of it for us.
08:44Yes, yeah.
08:46Yeah.
08:49Located 30 miles southeast of Saint-Malo,
08:53Donna and Paul bought the property
08:56for under £100,000 in 2024
09:00and planned to transform it
09:02into their new family home.
09:05When we saw them last year,
09:08they replaced the mill roof
09:09and completely removed another
09:12over the giant silo
09:16before clearing out the space inside,
09:19ready for the next stage
09:21of their project.
09:26So we're in the sous-sol,
09:28the lower ground floor
09:30of the silos.
09:32We're actually in the swimming pool
09:33at present.
09:34We are, yeah.
09:35I mean, it's only this height,
09:36so we're OK.
09:37So the plan for here
09:39is that we are going to create
09:40in the future a swimming pool.
09:42And then through the back
09:44is going to be a gym area
09:45because it has some of the best views.
09:47So we thought that might actually
09:49motivate us to go into the gym.
09:51To get into the gym
09:51and do a bit of exercise.
09:55They also have grand plans
09:57for the floor above,
09:59which has since been emptied.
10:02We've done a lot of work here.
10:04It was full of equipment before.
10:06So we're going to have a kitchen over here.
10:08And a utility in the far room.
10:11Yeah, in the back of the house.
10:12Here is going to be the main staircase.
10:14And then behind me
10:15is going to be the living room.
10:17And then to the rear here,
10:18we have the silos.
10:21Paul has ripped out
10:22all the concrete grain tanks
10:24to open up even more room
10:26for their dream living space.
10:28This is a dining area.
10:30Yes.
10:31This is the sunroom.
10:33Sunroom.
10:34So this is going to be a bar area.
10:35And then these three bays
10:37are going to be general entertainment.
10:39I think once we start
10:40cutting out the windows,
10:42it's just going to transform us,
10:44isn't it?
10:45But it's the top of the huge silo
10:48that has seen the most radical change.
10:52This is our beautiful new terrace.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Freshly created over the top of four silos.
10:59Look at those views.
11:01I mean, fantastic views
11:02all the way around, haven't we?
11:03So it's going to be a great, great space.
11:08The couple are gradually making progress.
11:12But there is one small corner,
11:14at least, that is finished.
11:19As they've transformed the derelict jeet
11:21into a habitable place
11:23to live complete
11:24with lounge,
11:27fitted kitchen
11:29and bedroom.
11:31It's certainly black and white
11:33between how it used to look, isn't it?
11:35A lot of work in here,
11:37but I think it's turned out great.
11:39Donna and Paul
11:40are off to a good start.
11:42But with a giant historic building
11:44to make into their permanent home,
11:47they have years of hard work ahead.
11:55Coming up,
11:56tensions rise for this chateau pair.
11:59It's going to stay where it is.
12:01You don't think it'd look better
12:01on a magnolia wall, do you?
12:03And Donna and Paul
12:05start to feel the strain.
12:07And, uh, toi.
12:09Are you pulling?
12:10Yes!
12:18In the stunning region of Limousin,
12:21in central France,
12:23is the fairy tale
12:24Chateau de la Grieire.
12:28This 19th century castle
12:30comprises 12 elegant bedrooms,
12:35two grands salons,
12:38and comes with over 10 acres.
12:42Nice and slowly.
12:43The proud owners
12:44are Oxfordshire couples
12:46Sharon and Tim,
12:47who have been renovating it
12:50ever since they moved here
12:51in 2022.
12:54I would say
12:55the journey has been
12:56fairly Herculean.
12:58Um, it's been emotional,
13:00it's been exhausting,
13:01it's been exhilarating,
13:02and for me,
13:03I've learnt skills
13:04that I didn't think I ever had.
13:06We never know
13:06what we're going to come across.
13:08There's still areas
13:08that we haven't seen,
13:09but it's part of it.
13:10It's a privilege
13:11to be able to spend
13:13some time in a chateau.
13:14Not everyone gets to do it,
13:15so we're very lucky.
13:22Located just half an hour's
13:23drive from Limoges,
13:26Sharon and Tim
13:27bought the chateau
13:28for £500,000.
13:31OK.
13:32Right.
13:33Ready to go.
13:34And when we last saw them,
13:36they began decorating
13:38their new tower suite,
13:40which is set to become
13:41their first space
13:42for paying guests.
13:45So, at the moment,
13:46all you can see is this,
13:47some might say,
13:48ghastly wallpaper,
13:50but I'm hoping it will work.
13:54Today,
13:54with the bedroom walls
13:56in full bloom
13:57and the tower bathroom
13:59sparkling too,
14:01Sharon's plan
14:02is starting
14:03to come to life.
14:05We need to get this
14:07completed
14:07in the next couple of days.
14:09I've got friends coming,
14:10so I want them to see it,
14:12so we have an awful lot to do.
14:15Ready?
14:16Oh!
14:18Good.
14:18First,
14:19budding interior designer
14:21Sharon
14:21wants to fill the room
14:23with lots of antiques
14:24that came with the chateau.
14:27I really like this furniture.
14:30It's got a nice,
14:31classy look to it.
14:33Even though the wallpaper's
14:34a little modern,
14:36I'm hoping that
14:38the wallpaper will be
14:39secondary to what you see.
14:41That's the idea.
14:43She's also found
14:44an old tapestry
14:45to help blend
14:46things together.
14:48Are you sure it goes
14:49because there's a lot of colour?
14:52I think it's stunning.
14:54I really like it.
14:56I think it's really dramatic
14:57and I absolutely love it,
14:59so it's going to stay
15:01where it is.
15:02You don't think it'd look better
15:03on a magnolia wall,
15:04do you?
15:05No, I don't think it would.
15:07This has allowed my
15:08inner colourist
15:10to come out,
15:11this house.
15:12If it was me,
15:14this would be
15:14painted magnolia.
15:19With Sharon
15:20standing firm...
15:21On your shoulder,
15:22arm round it.
15:24...she's also planning
15:25to add a century-old rug
15:27that she hopes
15:28will complement
15:29the bold walls too.
15:33Which way round
15:34should we do it?
15:36So, put it somewhere here.
15:40OK.
15:43It's nice.
15:47Good condition, actually.
15:49Just trying to work out
15:50whether it works.
15:52Does it work?
15:52We have some green
15:54that's in there
15:56and that
15:57ochre
15:59peachy
16:00tone.
16:02OK.
16:02In for a penny,
16:03in for a pound.
16:04Having proved a winner,
16:07Sharon's ideas
16:08are in full flow.
16:11But,
16:11with the rest of the room
16:13still to furnish,
16:15all she can hope
16:16is that it comes up
16:17smelling of roses.
16:25In Brittany,
16:27in northern France,
16:28Donna and Paul
16:29are starting stage two
16:31of their giant
16:33restoration project.
16:36We're now at the point
16:38where the demolition's finished.
16:40The vision is
16:40starting to appear,
16:42isn't it?
16:45Today,
16:46they're planning
16:47on creating a floor
16:49for the master bedroom,
16:50which they're building
16:51inside the old silo.
16:54Halfway up,
16:55what would have been
16:56containers
16:57filled with tons of grain.
17:01It's an epic job.
17:04So, to help,
17:05they've roped in
17:06builder mate Mick
17:08and both
17:09are having to balance
17:11on scaffolding boards
17:12six metres high.
17:16Yeah, I'm quite happy
17:17him trying to
17:18work in a way
17:19on that.
17:20I don't do heights
17:20at all.
17:23Terrifying.
17:23Absolutely terrifying.
17:26It's a dicey task
17:27as first,
17:29they need to install
17:30fixtures to the walls
17:32to ensure
17:33they can take
17:33the weight
17:34of the hefty
17:35steel joists.
17:37We just need
17:38to mark the holes
17:39for the bolts
17:40and then we'll
17:40get them drilled.
17:42We'll fill these
17:43holes full of resin
17:44and then we'll
17:45put the bolts in.
17:46While Mick's left
17:48to do the final
17:49preparations,
17:51Just a bit of
17:53light DIY.
17:55Paul starts
17:56wheeling in
17:56the first
17:57of the heavy beams.
17:59At over
18:00100 kilos
18:01in weight,
18:03it's definitely
18:04a two-person job.
18:07Ready?
18:08Yep.
18:09And, uh,
18:12are you pulling?
18:14Yes.
18:15Go.
18:21Go.
18:28Having navigated
18:29a safe passage
18:30and with the property
18:32having trapped doors
18:33on every floor,
18:35it's made the job
18:37simpler.
18:39That was easier
18:39than carrying it
18:40up the stairs.
18:42We just need
18:42to get in there now.
18:43I'll just hold
18:44the beam
18:44and just push
18:45that in.
18:46Give it a go.
18:52How far
18:52have we got?
18:53Er,
18:54seven inch.
18:55Right,
18:56two.
18:56Ready?
18:57Yep.
18:59Right,
18:59hang on.
19:05Right,
19:06I'm on here.
19:13Hey,
19:14that's it in.
19:16Let's see if it's
19:17strong enough now.
19:21Yeah,
19:21I think pretty confident
19:22that that's solid.
19:23You know,
19:24it's only me and Donna
19:24and a bed
19:25and some soft furnishings
19:26on this floor,
19:27so,
19:28er,
19:28I think that's great.
19:32So does this mean
19:33I can start
19:34kind of voicing
19:35my colour scheme?
19:36Well,
19:36I'm sure you've
19:37thought about them already,
19:37but as usual,
19:38you've not shared them
19:39with me,
19:40so...
19:41The first of the beans
19:43for their new floor
19:44may be in place,
19:46but with so much to do,
19:48Donna's dream bedroom
19:50will have to be put on hold
19:52for a good while yet.
20:01In Normandy,
20:03at Chateau de la Lasselle,
20:07Terry has begun
20:08to refurbish
20:09the antique chairs
20:10he hopes
20:12will add extra elegance
20:13to their new
20:14grand suite.
20:17We're just going to go
20:18over the horse here
20:19with some calico first.
20:26So,
20:26the last chairs
20:27that we've done,
20:28they were...
20:28they were nice,
20:29they were the 15
20:30little armchairs.
20:31That was obviously
20:32a start for it all,
20:33but with the suite,
20:35we're wanting it
20:35to be a lot more
20:36sort of extravagant.
20:40And to get something
20:41like this,
20:42I've seen exactly
20:42the same salon set
20:44for sale
20:45that's been re-upholstered,
20:47and it was in excess
20:48of 3,000 euro.
20:49And we got this set
20:50for 80 euro,
20:51so that's why
20:53we have to put
20:53all this effort
20:54into it.
20:57Meanwhile,
20:58Tracey and Ashley
20:59have been challenged
21:01with polishing up
21:02a dusty old chandelier
21:04earmarked
21:04for the master bedroom.
21:06They're trusting me
21:07to clean crystals.
21:09I don't normally
21:10get to play
21:11with the fancy stuff,
21:12so this is a new one
21:13for me.
21:17Mankey, these.
21:21You're probably going
21:22five to six hundred
21:23crystals on this
21:25chandelier.
21:27It's very fiddly.
21:29I don't want to
21:30be too rough with them.
21:33This is going to take
21:34a long time.
21:39Ashley is hoping
21:40some water and vinegar
21:41will sparkle
21:42the crystals
21:43into life.
21:47That's one
21:48that I've had in there,
21:49and that's one
21:50that hasn't been in there.
21:51You can see the difference
21:53in the two.
21:53You can actually see
21:54through these ones.
21:55These ones actually look opaque.
22:00So they need to do more.
22:01Yeah.
22:04Every single one?
22:05Yes, every single one.
22:07They've had about
22:07a hundred years
22:08of muck on them.
22:12Terry, however,
22:13is having no such problems.
22:16We've got all
22:16of the old straps here.
22:18What I'm going to look at
22:19putting some new ones on
22:20just to help strengthen it
22:22better than
22:22obviously getting it
22:23in the room
22:23so one sits on it
22:24and then falls through it.
22:26So I've had to make
22:27my own little stretcher.
22:28So I've just used
22:29a piece of wood
22:30with some nails in.
22:32So nails go through
22:35and then
22:36you can put it on the side
22:38and you can see
22:39obviously that's just
22:39creating the tension for us.
22:42And then get our
22:42staple gun.
22:46We can just staple it in
22:48and that'll be sorted.
22:59That's all the chair done.
23:01It's looking fantastic.
23:02Let's see, the next thing
23:03is just to get
23:04all of the fabric on.
23:05Please let we've got
23:06another one together.
23:08Terry's graceful touches
23:10are moving
23:11in the right direction
23:12but with 600 crystals
23:15to clean...
23:16We just need a little bit
23:17more of a polish
23:18and yeah, they'll be fine.
23:20Their new grand suite
23:21might take a long time
23:23to shine.
23:29Still to come.
23:31It's a recipe for disaster
23:33for these chatelands.
23:35Well, grandma's
23:36not going to be happy.
23:37I think we'll need
23:37to start again.
23:38And the problems
23:39start to mount
23:40for Sharon.
23:41I'm not sure
23:42how easy
23:43this is going to be
23:43to sew it.
23:45Oh my God.
23:46Are you kidding me?
23:55In the Limousin region
23:57of central France
23:58at Chateau de la Grieire...
24:01Can you do your side?
24:02Sharon and Tim
24:04are continuing
24:05to enhance
24:06their new tower suite.
24:08Floating headboard.
24:09Nice.
24:10And with their friends
24:11arriving later today,
24:13Sharon's eager
24:14to ensure
24:15everything
24:15is picture perfect.
24:19I've got two options
24:20for the curtains.
24:22One with some pink
24:23and red in
24:24and one that's got
24:25gold in.
24:26But now I've got
24:27gold over there.
24:29I'm thinking gold
24:30here.
24:31So I'm just going to
24:32put both of them up
24:33and make a decision.
24:36I'm going to try
24:37the red one
24:38first.
24:44The red curtains
24:45pick out the red
24:46in the carpet.
24:47Let's just see.
24:55Probably above
24:55my pay grade
24:56to make a decision
24:57on these,
24:58but
24:59I'm with the gold.
25:01Yeah,
25:01I think
25:03this
25:05brings out this.
25:07Yeah?
25:08Yep.
25:09Shall we get
25:10the sofa in?
25:10I think it's
25:11a good idea.
25:12As Sharon
25:13is a stickler
25:14for detail,
25:16she is leaving
25:17nothing to chance.
25:19I thought
25:20this would
25:20bring it
25:24all together.
25:26You know
25:26what's throwing it,
25:27don't you?
25:27What?
25:28The carpet.
25:30We haven't
25:31got a gold carpet,
25:32have we?
25:32A goldy colour?
25:34No.
25:35One minute
25:35the room works
25:36and then the next
25:38minute I put
25:39something in that
25:39I think might work
25:40and it just goes
25:41off kilter slightly.
25:42So I'm hoping
25:43when I get
25:44everything in
25:45it will be
25:47cohesive.
25:48Otherwise it'll be
25:49a hot mess.
25:50I think standing
25:51back here
25:52the sofa looks
25:52better with the gold.
25:54Having reached
25:55a verdict
25:56and with time
25:57in short supply,
25:59Tim decides
26:00to finish off
26:01his odd jobs
26:02in the en suite.
26:03We need
26:04a silicone
26:04behind the back
26:05of the bath
26:06here.
26:11Always the most
26:12difficult bit
26:13is behind the
26:13back of the
26:13tubs.
26:15While Sharon
26:16adds more glamour
26:17to her lavish
26:18bed crown.
26:19I'm not sure
26:20how easy this is
26:21going to be
26:21to sew it
26:22you know.
26:23Up here.
26:29Oh my god.
26:31Are you kidding
26:32me?
26:33People will be
26:33arriving soon.
26:35With their
26:36friends due
26:37in a couple
26:37of hours
26:38there is no
26:39time to be
26:40hanging around.
26:50taking on
26:51the restoration
26:52of any
26:53size of
26:53French Chateau
26:54is not
26:55for the
26:56faint-hearted.
26:59And while
27:00it often means
27:01long days
27:02working
27:05Well done,
27:06you.
27:06It's also
27:08a chance
27:08to embrace
27:09the lifestyle.
27:11especially
27:11when it comes
27:13to French
27:13food.
27:14Mmm.
27:15Just yummy.
27:16This is
27:17homegrown.
27:17It's delicious.
27:19And
27:19Nitherloire
27:20Valley
27:20in western
27:21France
27:22at the
27:23delightful
27:23Chateau
27:24de Borneau
27:25Erin
27:25and her
27:26French
27:27husband
27:27JB
27:28want to
27:29indulge
27:30in a
27:30national
27:31favourite.
27:33Today
27:34we're going
27:34to make
27:34a
27:35tarte
27:35tatin
27:36a recipe
27:38for my
27:38grandma
27:38when it
27:39comes to
27:40tarte tatin
27:40I'm in
27:41charge.
27:41As the
27:42genuine
27:43burgundy
27:43man
27:43I say
27:44off you
27:45go
27:45you can
27:45do
27:45dessert
27:46today.
27:47They
27:48begin
27:48by peeling
27:49and halving
27:50the fruit.
27:52My
27:52family
27:52has been
27:53growing apples
27:54for a
27:55huge
27:55generation
27:55now in
27:56Burgundy
27:56and it's
27:57good memories
27:57of it.
27:58So
27:58for tea
28:00coming back
28:00from school
28:01always
28:01tarte tatin.
28:02Lovely.
28:04After
28:05cutting
28:05the apples
28:06JB
28:07starts
28:07on the
28:08sugar
28:08caramel.
28:10Grandma
28:11used to
28:11make it
28:11like
28:12super
28:12quickly
28:13made it
28:14look
28:14super
28:14easy.
28:15So
28:15when I
28:16make it
28:16caramel
28:16I
28:17wouldn't
28:17melt
28:17the
28:17sugar
28:18first.
28:18So
28:18your
28:19grandma
28:19would have
28:19done
28:19the
28:20sugar
28:20first.
28:21So
28:21maybe
28:22that
28:22is
28:22the
28:22key
28:22to
28:23why
28:23the
28:23flavor
28:23is
28:23so good.
28:26But
28:26after
28:27adding
28:27the
28:27butter
28:29things
28:30don't
28:31go
28:31according
28:32to
28:32plan.
28:32It's
28:33sticking
28:33I put
28:34too much
28:34butter
28:34in one
28:35go.
28:36Ah!
28:37This is
28:38not
28:38working.
28:40Well
28:40grandma's
28:41not going
28:41to be
28:41happy.
28:43Don't
28:43think
28:43that's
28:43rescuable.
28:44I think
28:44you'll
28:45need to
28:45start
28:45again.
28:46Grandma
28:46would
28:46not
28:46be
28:47proud.
28:49This
28:49time
28:50Erin
28:51takes
28:51over
28:51the
28:52reins.
28:53I
28:54can't
28:54believe
28:54the
28:54British
28:54have
28:55taken
28:55over
28:55the
28:55French
28:56classics
28:57now.
28:58But
28:59it
29:00seems
29:00to
29:00be
29:00working.
29:02With
29:02the
29:02caramel
29:03saved
29:04it's
29:04just
29:05a
29:05question
29:05of
29:05adding
29:06the
29:06vital
29:07ingredient.
29:08So
29:08what I'm
29:09trying to
29:09do now
29:09is to
29:10cover
29:11all of
29:11the
29:11caramel
29:12with
29:12apple
29:12not
29:13to
29:13avoid
29:14any
29:14gap.
29:15Yeah
29:16I think
29:17now it's
29:17fine.
29:18While
29:18the tart
29:19topping
29:20is put
29:20in the
29:20oven
29:20to
29:21bake
29:22Erin
29:23has
29:23the
29:23perfect
29:24setting
29:24to
29:25sample
29:25the
29:25French
29:26delicacy.
29:27This
29:27is
29:27the
29:27solarium
29:28which
29:29is
29:29really
29:29where
29:29we
29:30host
29:30breakfast
29:30for
29:31our
29:31wedding
29:31couples.
29:32It's
29:32so
29:33pretty
29:33here
29:33it's
29:33like
29:33an
29:33interior
29:34winter
29:34garden.
29:35Sometimes
29:35I think
29:36when we
29:36have
29:37a
29:37little
29:37moment
29:37to
29:37ourselves
29:38it's
29:38a
29:38really
29:38lovely
29:38place
29:39to
29:39just
29:39sort
29:39of
29:40escape
29:40have
29:41afternoon
29:41tea
29:41and
29:42today
29:42we're
29:43going
29:43to
29:43have
29:43tat
29:43tat
29:44here.
29:46With
29:46the
29:46apples
29:47baking
29:47nicely
29:48JB
29:49adds
29:50the
29:50puff
29:50pastry.
29:51Tightly
29:52sealing
29:53the
29:53apples
29:54underneath.
29:56And
29:57then
29:57it's
29:58back
29:58in
29:58the
29:58oven.
30:00And
30:01after
30:01half
30:01an
30:02hour
30:02it's
30:03almost
30:03ready.
30:04Looks
30:05good.
30:06Yeah I
30:07think it's
30:07fine.
30:10So now I'm
30:11going to flip
30:11it because
30:12it's obviously
30:12an upside down
30:13tart and
30:14discover the
30:15result.
30:23yeah I think
30:24it's successful.
30:25It looks
30:25good.
30:25We now
30:26need to
30:26test it.
30:30Crispy dough
30:31so that's
30:31good.
30:32That smells
30:33amazing.
30:34It smells
30:34like my
30:34childhood.
30:41good.
30:41That's
30:41excellent.
30:42Good.
30:43Bravo.
30:44Well done.
30:45Really really
30:45nice.
30:46I think that was
30:47definitely a success.
30:49One for the repertoire.
30:50Okay good.
30:51Weasel
30:51without the English
30:52caramel.
30:53Well you can
30:53decide.
30:54That is
30:54la question.
30:57It's proved
30:58to be a
30:59triumph and
31:00as they
31:01indulge in
31:02a second
31:02slice it
31:04seems their
31:04ongoing
31:05renovation
31:05work will
31:07have to
31:07wait a
31:07little
31:08while.
31:09Longer.
31:17Up in
31:18the region
31:18of Brittany
31:19work is
31:20beginning to
31:21progress.
31:22Today Paul
31:23and builder
31:24mate Mick
31:25are putting
31:26in the
31:26final blocks
31:27for the
31:27new
31:28terrace
31:29floor.
31:30Having
31:31previously
31:32been the
31:32roof of
31:33the old
31:33silos it's
31:34another
31:35floor they've
31:36had to
31:36build from
31:37scratch.
31:40Originally
31:40that block
31:41was about
31:42615
31:45mill and
31:46then it
31:47sits in the
31:47beams here
31:48and here.
31:48We've got
31:49the final
31:49beam here
31:50and it's
31:50only about
31:50320 millimetres
31:52so we need
31:52to cut them
31:53because the
31:54blocks are
31:54hollow we've
31:55just filled
31:55these with
31:55concrete so
31:57when we do
31:57cut them it
31:58gives us a
31:58bit more
31:58concrete to
31:59support the
32:00block and
32:01we'll see if
32:02this one fits.
32:08Happy days.
32:10It's been two
32:11months in the
32:12making but
32:14finally the
32:15end is in
32:16sight.
32:18down below
32:19donna is
32:20cooking up
32:21another major
32:23project.
32:24Paul's upstairs
32:25making a lot
32:26of noise and
32:27dust as usual
32:28so I've
32:29escaped into
32:29my space
32:31which is the
32:32kitchen on the
32:33ground floor
32:33and basically
32:35what I'm trying
32:36to do I've
32:36got all of
32:37these plans
32:38of my
32:38kitchen but
32:39before I go
32:40and kind of
32:41finalise the
32:42order and
32:43spend lots of
32:43money I'm
32:45trying to
32:45really get a
32:47visual of how
32:48it's going to
32:49play out in
32:50this space.
32:52I've basically
32:53got an L-shaped
32:54kitchen which is
32:55down there and
32:56here and then
32:57the big island
32:58which you can
32:59see where I've
33:00been putting
33:00pieces of wood
33:01trying to
33:02juggle it
33:02round because
33:03I want to
33:04retain that
33:05old beam.
33:08It's a lovely
33:09wood column that
33:10was used in
33:10the mail.
33:11We have three
33:11of them in
33:12this room and
33:12we want to
33:13retain all of
33:14them so I
33:15think putting
33:16the wood and
33:17that out is
33:18it kind of
33:19allows me to
33:19see you know
33:20the walk areas
33:21and that as
33:22well to make
33:23sure I've not
33:24got them too
33:25close to the
33:26island.
33:27I've got plenty
33:27of room around
33:28it because you
33:29know it's a
33:30huge room.
33:31I don't want
33:31my kitchen to
33:32be squashed up
33:33into one corner
33:34and the rest of
33:35the room empty
33:36so that's what
33:37I'm doing.
33:38I'm kind of
33:38playing with
33:39pieces of
33:39wood and
33:40spray paint.
33:43Once I'm
33:44happy with it
33:44then I can go
33:45ahead and get
33:45it all ordered.
33:47It's set to be
33:48another ambitious
33:50job but for
33:51now at least
33:52the new
33:53terrace floor
33:54is almost
33:55done.
33:57This is our
33:58last block.
34:00Good day's
34:01work actually.
34:01Half a day's
34:02work just getting
34:02these finished
34:03and then that
34:04will allow us
34:04to get on to
34:05the reinforcement.
34:07And then
34:07some back
34:08props in and
34:09we can get
34:09the concrete
34:10ordered.
34:10Put shrimp on
34:11the barbie and
34:11no time at all.
34:14Like a glove.
34:18So that's all
34:19the blocks in
34:19and then weather
34:21permitting we can
34:21order some concrete
34:22for the final
34:23screen on top.
34:28It's done.
34:29Well this phase is
34:30done.
34:31Well done guys.
34:32It's huge.
34:33Yeah it's all
34:34size.
34:37Once it's concrete
34:38on it I think it'll
34:38look even bigger
34:39visually.
34:40It's a great space.
34:41Absolutely great
34:42space.
34:44Yeah.
34:44Who'd you believe
34:45this one starred
34:46green.
34:47It's amazing what
34:48you can do with a
34:49bit of imagination
34:50isn't it?
34:50Yeah and hard
34:52work.
34:52And hard work.
34:53And cash.
34:54And money.
34:55And time.
34:56And time.
34:59Donna and Paul are
35:01beginning to make
35:02small steps.
35:03But with five
35:05derelict floors to
35:06tackle it's going to
35:08take years to bring
35:09this historic building
35:11back to life.
35:18Coming up.
35:20It's the moment of
35:21truth for Terry and
35:22Ashley.
35:23Have you tested this
35:24before?
35:24Yeah.
35:26You haven't have you?
35:27Well we'll find out.
35:29And it's crunch time
35:31for Sharon and Tim.
35:33Bonjour.
35:35Bonjour.
35:35Come on in.
35:45In the Normandy
35:46region of northern
35:47France.
35:48You need to go just
35:50a little bit more
35:51round.
35:51Yeah.
35:53Terry and Ashley
35:54are fitting the
35:55freshly polished
35:56chandelier in their
35:58new opulent guest
35:59suite.
36:01That way a bit.
36:02Yeah.
36:02Perfect.
36:03Now right there.
36:04Moment of truth.
36:06The electrics aren't
36:07actually all hooked up
36:08in here properly.
36:09yet.
36:10No.
36:10We're waiting for the
36:11electrician to come and
36:11sort that out.
36:12But we can put a little
36:13plug on and plug it into
36:15an extension and try it.
36:17Have you tested this
36:18before it went up?
36:19Yeah.
36:21You haven't have you?
36:23Well we'll find out.
36:29Yay.
36:31All working?
36:32Yeah.
36:33It's beautiful.
36:34It's stunning.
36:35Mm-hmm.
36:35Absolutely stunning.
36:36And it really makes the
36:38wood glow in here as well
36:38doesn't it?
36:39Yeah.
36:40The master bedroom is
36:42coming together nicely.
36:44And downstairs, Tracy is
36:47making some elegant curtains
36:49for the space using locally
36:51bought chic fabric.
36:55They've got the lovely tapestry
36:56design on these.
36:57And to complement it,
36:59we've got a lovely velvet fabric
37:01to go on the inside,
37:03which both go really,
37:05really well together.
37:05I think they look fantastic.
37:07So I'm just going to put some
37:08of the header tape on now.
37:10This is what the hooks will go
37:11into.
37:13Making curtains on a
37:14chateau scale means they need
37:17to be at least three metres long.
37:23I've made curtains before,
37:24but nothing on the scale
37:25of what we make here.
37:27But I'm enjoying it.
37:31Finally, I've got it all sewn
37:33and put together now.
37:35So this is the last bit.
37:36I'm just going to put this trim
37:37on what we found.
37:40I'm just going to fit this
37:41all the way down
37:42around the bottom.
37:43And then we're done.
37:53Well done.
37:53Do you think about
37:54that length leave?
37:55Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:56Shall we get them out
37:57and see what they look like?
37:58Yep.
37:59Well, it ties in better
38:00with the trim now,
38:01doesn't it?
38:02Mm-hmm.
38:03Yeah?
38:04So I'll pull this over there,
38:05get the other one out.
38:06Match the fabric.
38:08Fabric, exact, yeah.
38:09Yeah, that'd be brilliant.
38:11Perfect for the room.
38:12Lovely.
38:13Exciting.
38:13Mm-hmm.
38:15It's yet another
38:17special touch.
38:19But there is still
38:20some dirty work ahead
38:22for Terry and Ashley,
38:23who are eager
38:24to scrub up
38:25the newly restored floor
38:27in the master bedroom.
38:29Yeah, so I have to do
38:29from the middle there
38:30to the fire.
38:31And then that end part.
38:32Then that end part.
38:33And then the middle.
38:34Yeah, yeah.
38:36It's an intricate job,
38:38especially as renovating
38:39the floor,
38:40took them several weeks.
38:42So the finish
38:43we're going with
38:43is a hard wax oil.
38:45Yeah.
38:45It's going to give us
38:46more of a sort of
38:47authentic look
38:48that we're wanting.
38:52So we have to put this
38:53on in quite a specific way.
38:54And it means that we,
38:56first off,
38:56we go against the grain.
38:58Second off,
38:59we pull it with the grain.
39:00We have to,
39:01when we do it,
39:02lift the roller off
39:03in a gentle motion
39:04so that we don't
39:05leave any marks.
39:08With two of them
39:09to do the task,
39:10it should prove
39:12to be relatively
39:13straightforward.
39:15I think because
39:16we've done
39:16exactly half the room,
39:18to see the difference,
39:19it's unbelievable.
39:25The last bits.
39:29And voila.
39:32It's nice doing
39:33such an easy job,
39:34but with instant results.
39:37And it is instant gratification,
39:39isn't it,
39:39when you see it?
39:40Yeah.
39:41The master bedroom
39:43is certainly
39:44starting to shine.
39:46But with the salon
39:47still a work in progress
39:49and the second bedroom
39:50to also dress,
39:52Terry and Ashley's
39:53grand new suite
39:55is not yet ready
39:56for kings and queens.
40:08In the Limousin region
40:10of central France,
40:12Sharon and Tim
40:13are racing
40:14to finish off
40:15their tower suite
40:16as their friends
40:18are due imminently.
40:22How's it going?
40:24It's okay.
40:25Oh, it looks good.
40:27Sort of tidied it up.
40:28Yeah, it's been trickier
40:30than I thought.
40:33So I'm just going to finish
40:34this bit of thread now.
40:39Done.
40:40With the bed crown complete,
40:43they're just hoping
40:44they have enough time
40:45to do the finishing touches.
40:48It's called attention to detail.
40:51Having put so much thought
40:52into the room,
40:53Sharon wants everything
40:55in pride of place.
40:58Are we on the carpet?
41:00Yeah, go on the carpet.
41:07Happy with it?
41:08Yeah, I think, um...
41:11Yeah, I am happy with it.
41:12It's very nice.
41:13Well done.
41:14We did it.
41:15Good job.
41:1812 months ago,
41:20this empty space
41:22was bland,
41:23uninspiring,
41:25and very dated.
41:29Now, it's been transformed
41:32into an elegant
41:34and sophisticated
41:35guest bedroom.
41:38Complete with an equally
41:40impressive en suite,
41:43Sharon's choice of bold
41:45floral wallpaper
41:47makes an instant statement.
41:49while the addition
41:51of luxury curtains,
41:54a lavish bed crown,
41:56and antiques
41:58belonging to the chateau
42:00ensures the rich history
42:02of the castle
42:03will be on display
42:05for many years
42:06to come.
42:08OK.
42:09Allez.
42:12Bonjour!
42:14Bonjour!
42:14Come on in.
42:16It's time to see
42:18if their hard work
42:19has paid off.
42:25Wow!
42:26Wow!
42:28Good, this me!
42:30Beautiful!
42:31Impressed!
42:32It really is beautiful.
42:34Do you like it?
42:35Oh, yes.
42:35The lights
42:36and the chandelier,
42:37gorgeous.
42:38Marino,
42:39what do you think?
42:39Because it's your country,
42:41it's one of your chateaus.
42:42Lincoln English,
42:43break the rules.
42:45Or something like that.
42:46No, no, really.
42:47Everything was in the chateau,
42:49so I just rearranged it.
42:50Just replace
42:51and use the best
42:53of what you could.
42:55The bed crown,
42:57that was in the attic.
42:58Oh, yes.
42:58So I dusted that off
43:00and brought it down.
43:00I like the trimming.
43:01It's beautiful, isn't it?
43:02It matches all the...
43:03He picked it all up,
43:03all the different shades
43:04and colours.
43:06You must be crowned.
43:08Would you like to see
43:08the bathroom?
43:09Oh, yes.
43:10This one.
43:11Oh!
43:12Mais c'est super!
43:13I like the painting.
43:14That it reflects...
43:15Yes, it's a smaller version.
43:18Oui, c'est original.
43:19You must be happy
43:20to have finished.
43:23This has been going
43:24for a long time.
43:25I'm super pleased
43:26that you both like it.
43:27I'm just amazed
43:28at the amount of work
43:29they've done
43:30since they've moved in.
43:32This is the first chateau
43:33I've ever been in
43:34and it is absolutely wonderful
43:35and to actually stay here
43:37would be lovely.
43:38As a French woman
43:39I'm happy to see
43:41that it's done
43:43in respect.
43:45It's done with
43:46really good text.
43:48I was really pleased
43:50with how that went.
43:51To have two friends
43:52come round
43:52and like the room
43:54that's such a relief.
43:56It's an appreciation.
43:57that it was a nice room
44:00so that's what we want
44:01because we want
44:02the general public
44:03to enjoy it
44:04so it can't just
44:05be my opinion
44:05because I wouldn't want
44:06to have to take
44:07that wallpaper off
44:07and start all over again
44:08so yeah, nice feeling.
44:10It's been a huge success
44:12and with Sharon and Tim's
44:15first bedroom suite
44:16ready for paying guests
44:18it will only be
44:19a matter of time
44:20before the money
44:22starts rolling in.
44:31Next time
44:32It's one step forward
44:34two steps back
44:36for Terry and Ashley.
44:37I'm going to have to
44:38take up
44:39all of the
44:40bigger square ones.
44:41This Chatelaine
44:42takes on a marathon
44:44of a mural.
44:45It's going more slowly
44:46than I had originally
44:47thought.
44:48We absolutely have to
44:49have this bathroom
44:50ready.
44:51And one couple
44:52are at the height
44:53of a tricky
44:54turret makeover.
44:56Can you come out
44:57from underneath there
44:58because if it does
44:59collapse
44:59I've got no one
45:00to drive me to hospital.
45:13To be continued...
