“Economic warfare is the new normal of what these conflicts are going to look like.”

At Fortune Brainstorm Tech, Anduril CEO Brian Schimpf argued that modern conflicts are no longer primarily about destroying military assets; they’re about strangling economies. Data centers, oil refineries, and shipping lanes are the targets now, and low-cost drones have made striking them cheaper than ever.

00:00The U.S. and Israel, I think, did something like 10 times as many strikes in the first month of
00:05the war as they did in the entire Gulf War. One of the first times we've seen data centers and
00:10oil refineries as the primary targets. And the economic warfare that is effectively the
00:17Strait of Hormuz is, in my head, this is the new normal of what these conflicts are going to look
00:21like. You've seen Ukraine and Russia start to move to this, where the Ukrainians are striking
00:26Russian oil and gas infrastructure away in the rear and taking out their distribution pipelines.
00:30These things are really about creating complexity for your adversaries, and that's largely economic
00:36at this point.
