02:06welcome to 2k sports i'm damon bruce glad to have you with us
02:09wednesday night in the nba it'll be the toronto raptors facing off against the charlotte bobcats
02:15and that's it for now let's send you out to kevin harlan and the rest of the 2k sports crew
02:19enjoy the first half we'll see you soon
02:35and a thoughtful moment indeed the national anthem and a crowd anxiously awaiting the tip-off
02:42hello and thanks for joining us 2k sports fans for another exciting presentation
02:47of nba basketball with steve kerr and clark hello
02:55this is kevin harlan and now we take a brief check at the matches our starting five for both teams
03:01hey guys take a look here at kyle lowry what will we see from him lowry is a feisty quick
03:08strong point
03:09guard kevin and he's a very aggressive defender gets a lot of steals and then offensively i love
03:14the way he's developed his long range shot that's something he couldn't do well when he first
03:19entered the league but now he's a big time three-point shooter and he's also a pretty good defender
03:23END
03:24END
03:26END
04:10Utilizing that quickness and strength to disrupt things defensively.
04:13We'll see the Charlotte Bobcats defending home turf in the Eastern Conference.
04:17This game against Toronto here, it's their first look at the Raptors.
04:21The previous season series split right down the middle.
04:24These teams were quite evenly matched.
04:26Yeah, here we go.
04:27The first in what will be a three-game season series between these two this year.
04:32And because of the odd number of games between them, guys, the one thing we know is that one
04:37of these teams will have brightening rights over the other at the end of the season.
04:40Exactly, Kevin.
04:41And that makes tonight's game, I think, a little more interesting and intriguing.
04:45I mean, whoever wins this one will have a big advantage going into the next two.
04:49That was simply a defensive breakdown there, Kevin.
04:51He was all alone for that shot.
04:53It was a warm-up jump.
04:55Gordon goes in.
04:58Kid Gilchrist dishes to Gordon.
05:00He passes to Walker.
05:05Zeller inside, defended by Acy.
05:08Well, that was a quick foul for him there.
05:10The refs are certainly calling it close.
05:14Kid Gilchrist, a screen on Johnson.
05:17And the Bobcats with possession here.
05:22Kid Gilchrist with it.
05:24Lowry picks him up.
05:26And Kid Gilchrist kicks to Gordon.
05:29The offensive rebound.
05:34Just over a minute and a half played here in this one.
05:40Kid Gilchrist, the pass to Walker.
05:43And Kid Gilchrist kicks to Zeller.
05:45Outside, Walker.
05:47Six to shoot.
05:49Jefferson.
05:52Goes up again.
05:53And they're now one for five to start this game.
05:57So having trouble finding any offensive rhythm.
05:59Well, you know, Big Al Jefferson was a name that was getting tossed around the trade rumor mill.
06:11Last deadline.
06:12And that's something you have to expect when you're as talented as he is with a contract that's set to
06:17expire.
06:17Here's Walker following the score by DeMar DeRozan and stolen by Ivy to the paint.
06:26And, you know, that's going to be goaltending, guys.
06:28So that's a free basket right there.
06:30He almost got to that shot in time, but not quite.
06:34You can't touch the ball once it's on the way down.
06:36And the crowd.
06:41Immediately letting the officials have it after that whistle.
06:44A very unpopular call there.
06:48And Walker kicks to Zeller.
06:53Back to Walker.
06:55Six on the shot clock.
06:57Again, the missed by the Bobcats.
06:58And for Al Jefferson, still yet to make an all-star game.
07:01Somewhat surprising.
07:02But it seems like all the times he's often in that conversation.
07:06And he should be.
07:07He's a top-tier big man.
07:09Ever since his arrival in this league, he's been really good on the low block.
07:13Strong and good score, but never quite good enough to get into that all-star game.
07:19And Zeller backs down.
07:22And that time, also a missed shot.
07:25Last outing for Charlotte.
07:26They won that game against the Knicks in New York.
07:28It was an emphatic win for them.
07:30And especially considering that it was on the road.
07:33No question, by the way, that it was their offense that carried them.
07:36Steve, I love the way they attacked at every opportunity.
07:39They never were on their heels.
07:40And eventually, that allowed them to pull away.
07:43The Bobcats, one of the worst teams in the league over the last couple of seasons,
07:47actually had the worst winning percentage ever back in 11-12.
07:51But they've made a commitment to rebuilding through the draft.
07:54And clearly, when you do that, there's going to be some pain along the way.
07:58So Charlotte calls timeout.
08:00They're first.
08:01And back to the Bobcats.
08:02Steve, do you see a light at the end of the tunnel for them?
08:05Well, I don't know.
08:06We'll see.
08:06They brought in a new coach in Steve Clifford, who's well-regarded.
08:09They signed Al Jefferson.
08:11So I think they're going to be better.
08:14I think they'll win more games.
08:15But they're still a ways away from being a playoff team.
08:19They've got to continue to build this roster, be patient,
08:22and try to put themselves in position to win.
08:25Now, here's Walker.
08:27Turned in an outstanding game against New York.
08:30He's going to play his way right onto the bench and out of the game
08:33if he continues to shoot it like he has so far in this quarter.
08:37Kid Gilgris with the steal.
08:42Walker with it.
08:48Kicks it out to Gordon.
08:51Pass to Jefferson.
08:52And it's out of bounds to the Bobcats as Charlotte retains possession.
08:56And let's get this update now from Doris Burke,
08:59who's across the way on the sideline.
09:01Kevin, I had a chance to speak with the head coach for the Charlotte Bobcats.
09:04And he said a big factor in this game will be how well they're able to handle Kyle Lowry.
09:09He admitted being a fan of his game,
09:11saying he's a tough athletic guard who really competes.
09:14The defense, rebounding, attack the paint.
09:17He'll take it to you.
09:18We've got to be ready to match his motor and his aggressiveness.
09:21Kevin, are they up to it?
09:23Thank you, Doris.
09:25And the Raptors making a change here.
09:27Augustine's checked in.
09:29The Bobcats have shot just one free throw earlier.
09:32One for one in the game.
09:33Well, this is a club that shot 75% as a team from the free throw line last season.
09:38Here's A.C. from deep.
09:41And again, Toronto with the triple.
09:44And it's nice to see Raptors coach Dwayne Casey
09:46getting another chance at being a head coach.
09:48A lot of people felt he got a bum rap back in Minnesota in 2007.
09:52He had that team overachieving at .500 when he was let go.
09:57So I'm glad he's gotten a second chance and he's making the most of it.
10:01Some rugged defense there against one of the stronger finishers in the game.
10:06Gordon with it.
10:07Now Hamilton defending.
10:09And it's Gordon penetrating.
10:11Excellent tee there for Mason.
10:13Pretty good defense there.
10:15I mean, that's a shot that he can make, but they really challenged him.
10:18And you go back to that Timberwolves team at .500.
10:20Casey was let go.
10:22And then, Steve, they went 12-30 after he was gone.
10:25Yeah, they struggled with his departure.
10:27And a lot of the players actually were sad to see him go.
10:29So, you know, that's sometimes the case in the NBA.
10:32You know, coaches get blamed for everything, fairly or not.
10:36And in Casey's case, I respect the fact that he got back to work, did a great job in Dallas
10:42as an assistant,
10:43and is now the head man in Toronto trying to get this team turned around.
10:47And count it.
10:48The shot is good.
10:49He'll go to the free throw line.
10:51I couldn't have dreamt of a much better start than what they've had here today.
10:55Everything's worked, especially offensively.
10:57And what a lead they have already to show for.
11:00You know, the Raptors really struggled against the rest of the conference last year, only going 22-30.
11:06And that certainly doesn't put any fear in the opponents.
11:09They're looking to improve on that this season.
11:12Now here's Eller.
11:1314 points from him, the last game against the Knicks in New York.
11:17And he gave them great effort defensively as well, including a couple of blocked shots.
11:21Ouch.
11:22Another miss to add to what's been a miserable game for him from the field.
11:26Well, back to the Raptors.
11:28I would expect them to end up with a better win total against the East this year,
11:31as they have seemed to, Steve, found a bit of their identity at the end of the season.
11:35Well, they made some dramatic changes in the middle of the year trading for Rudy Gay.
11:39And I think ultimately it might be for the best, you know, as they seemed to play with more bite
11:44as the season wore on.
11:45They had more edge, a little more talent.
11:48So now they have to put it all together.
11:54Outside Jefferson.
11:57He feeds it to Walker.
12:00Can they get it?
12:02And the shot is long.
12:04Tell you what, they haven't wasted any time getting into the swing of things on the boards.
12:09Yeah, and even though it's early, I mean, that's a great sign for them for the rest of the game.
12:13That's good.
12:15Aces got five points so far.
12:17Very positive opening quarter for them.
12:20The shots have been falling.
12:22You know, the shooting percentage would be nice if it stayed right there, but that's going to be tough to
12:27do.
12:28Now here's Zeller.
12:29Here's Walker with the three.
12:32And the shot is good.
12:34He has six.
12:35Well, he's taken eight shots and he's missed six of them.
12:38It's been uneven for him in terms of shooting.
12:40He's still trying to get on track, though.
12:42Tries it from the top of the key.
12:45Raptors get it back.
12:46AC.
12:47And lots of contact there.
12:49Missing the shot.
12:50He'll shoot two.
12:51Well, he can make you look foolish, Kevin.
12:53I mean, you do not want to be caught under the hoop when he goes up for one of his
12:56signature dunks.
12:57Because if you are, Steve, it's poster time.
13:00Just mark it up.
13:01Charlotte making some changes.
13:03Haywood comes in for Al Jefferson.
13:05And it's Bismack, Biambo, and Frisella.
13:07You know, it wasn't a surprise that the Raptors struggled on the road.
13:11Most young teams do.
13:12They were 13-28 as the visiting team.
13:15They did end the year looking a lot more dangerous on the road than they started, though.
13:21And Augustine kicks to Hansborough.
13:23Feeds it to Augustine.
13:26Sinks the three-pointer.
13:28Augustine's got six.
13:30And that's what's built them this early lead.
13:32Deadly shooting from behind the arc.
13:34Yeah, the D better start getting out there on them, Steve, and soon.
13:38Well, Clark, you were talking about the Raptors' struggles on the road.
13:40They didn't have the best road record at the end of the season, as you said.
13:44But, Steve, they did show some bite with their play.
13:47You know, one of the interesting stats from the Raptors last year is they actually scored more points on the
13:51road than they did at home.
13:53And that rarely happens in the NBA.
13:56But I think the big thing with Toronto, their defense has to improve more than anything else.
14:01He dishes it to Sessions.
14:03Kid Gilchrist.
14:04He's covered by Gay.
14:05Just five on the clock.
14:07That's a two-pointer from Walker.
14:09And Charlotte again with the bucket.
14:15Well, it was Toronto winning their last game against Miami.
14:18They ran away with that game, Kevin.
14:20Mostly thanks to their play at the offensive end.
14:23That's exactly right, guys.
14:24There was crisp movement by the players and the ball throughout that game.
14:28And they got a lot of high-quality shots as a result.
14:31Now, here's Kid Gilchrist.
14:33After the miss from Acy, Sessions gets a screen from Haywood.
14:37Here's Walker with the three.
14:39The rebound by Hansbro.
14:41You know, he's been off his game this quarter just a bit.
14:44Hasn't been able to get a whole lot to go so far.
14:47Augustine from outside.
14:49And the Raptors hit again from deep.
14:51They're relying on their three-point shooting and getting pretty good results right now.
14:55Yeah.
14:56In fact, three of the last five makes are from beyond the arc.
15:00Now, here's Kid Gilchrist.
15:01He picked up 12 points in their last win against the Knicks in New York.
15:06Pass to Walker.
15:09He kicks it to Haywood.
15:11Gets blocked.
15:12Lays out.
15:13And it's out of bounds to the Bobcats as Charlotte retains possession.
15:18A look here at last year in the NBA where the Bobcats ranked.
15:22Sixth in blocks.
15:24Eighth in lowest turnovers per game.
15:26As far as free-throw shooting as a team goes, not a strong suit.
15:30Top 20 in the league.
15:31A little bit of work to be done there.
15:34And what really stands out is the blocks for me because that's a team that really dominated
15:39the paint area.
15:40And when they were on top of their game, they were very physical.
15:43They fronted the post a lot and forced some difficult shots at the rim.
15:48And due to their length and their size, they were able to block a lot of shots down there.
15:53That's great defense there.
15:54They're really going after the shooters right now.
15:58And here's Toronto.
16:00They're on a 20-7 run.
16:02A three from Gay.
16:03And again, Toronto with the triple.
16:06They've built a big lead here early.
16:08Both defensively and offensively.
16:10They've been terrific right from the tip.
16:13Clark, they've been struggling here on offense.
16:14Yeah, a little bit of cottonmouth here.
16:16Dry spell for sure.
16:18Here's Biombo.
16:19They grab their own miss.
16:22Good work defensively by Gay.
16:25Well defended.
16:26And he's not someone who responds well to that kind of defensive pressure.
16:30Hans Brodishes to Acy.
16:33Charity's striped shot.
16:35That one a tad offline to the right, but drops in for him.
16:40Acy's got eight points.
16:42And Sessions kicks to Haywood.
16:45Haywood off a pick from Sessions.
16:47And it's Kid Gilchrist penetrating.
16:49Oh!
16:50Are you kidding me?
16:51That was a power punch right there.
16:53Oh, great.
16:55He has a highlight reel unto himself, guys.
16:58Wow.
16:59That could very well be a contender for dunk of the year.
17:02And perhaps might make its way all over the internet.
17:05I'm with you.
17:06I'm with you, Clark.
17:07That's a crowd pleaser if I've ever seen one.
17:09It's a scary thought for the league, guys, if Michael Kidd Gilchrist ever gets a reliable jump shot.
17:16I mean, his ability to slash and get to the bucket combined with a consistent jumper
17:21would make him one of the toughest guys in the league to guard.
17:24And here's Sessions.
17:25Rip Hamilton getting it to go from deep.
17:28Shoots from the post.
17:29And a foul on the shot.
17:31He'll go to the stripe for two.
17:32And for Kid Gilchrist, the outside shot is a work in progress.
17:36I'll tell you what, though.
17:37He is a great slasher.
17:39He's tough.
17:39He's got a good handle on the ball.
17:41And when he gets in the open floor, finishes well at the rim, sometimes through contact because of his strength.
17:47So, yeah, you're right.
17:48The jump shot is the last component.
17:51The first free throw is good.
17:53For the Bobcats, some tough luck in the lottery the last few seasons.
17:56They had the worst record in 12, but they missed out on Anthony Davis.
18:00The second worst record last season, but they fell to the four pick.
18:03They need so much help, but the lottery fortune hasn't gone their way.
18:21He doesn't get the second one.
18:23And, Clark, you mentioned the struggles last year for the Bobcats.
18:27Last season, the worst defense, second worst in rebounding, and, Steve, the third worst in offense.
18:33They just didn't have enough talent.
18:35It's been a long struggle for this team the last few years, and the roster is starting to grow.
18:41It's starting to build, but there's still a lot of work to be done in Charlotte.
18:46DeMar DeRozan.
18:47He's checked in for Rudy Gay.
18:50Novak, the pass to Ross.
18:52Hands it from downtown.
18:54And they're getting their points now almost exclusively from the three-point line.
18:58That's four of the last five.
18:59You've got to run those guys off the line.
19:01I agree, and the defense is practically giving them those shots, though.
19:05And a look at how the offensive approach has been going here so far for Toronto.
19:10Now, they didn't waste any time getting into a groove out there.
19:12They're dialed in from long range.
19:14The other thing they've had going for them tonight is their passing.
19:17I mean, doing a nice job.
19:19Plenty of their points early on coming off assists.
19:26Free throw good sessions.
19:28Guys, one of the biggest challenges with young teams that have started to lose is changing the culture.
19:34Being able to establish a way of working that doesn't allow losing to be accepted.
19:39This team has got a long way to go in that regard, but they're on the right track.
19:43Well, the culture in the locker room is definitely a real thing to conquer if you're a franchise that's been
19:48near the bottom for a while.
19:49Well, Steve, the Bobcats seem to understand that and are looking for guys that want to work.
19:54I agree.
19:55That's why they drafted Michael Kidd-Gilchrest a couple years ago.
19:58Jeffrey Taylor, Cody Zeller.
20:00They're trying to get guys that hate losing.
20:03They want to come in and build that culture you're talking about.
20:06So, we'll see if some of that attitude can carry over and turn this team around.
20:12Here's Petro after the made shot from Taylor.
20:16DeRozan's shot is good.
20:19DeRozan's got 13.
20:20They're going back to the three-point shot over and over and over.
20:24That was the ninth straight point from behind the arc, Clark.
20:28It feels like they're finding the holes in this defense.
20:32Now, here's Anderson.
20:34He's coming off a 10-point game against New York.
20:36And he played great at the defensive end of the floor, too, Kevin.
20:39And had a couple of important block shots in that game.
20:42So, good all-around effort.
20:44Out of bounds.
20:45Charlotte takes possession.
20:47And Toronto making a change here.
20:49Ivey's checked in.
21:0229 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
21:05Henders and kicks to Sessions.
21:09With the lead pass.
21:12Taylor's shot.
21:13Good.
21:14Taylor's got his second bucket.
21:16Beautiful feed off the bounce to his teammate there.
21:19Nicely done.
21:20It's been all Raptors.
21:23Ivey dishes to Novak.
21:25Pass to Ivey.
21:26For three.
21:28That's good.
21:29Ivey's got five points so far.
21:32Nice pass.
21:33That one was right on target.
21:37Here's Sessions.
21:40Second chance effort.
21:41Mick Roberts' shot is good.
21:43Boy, he crashed the boards with purpose right there.
21:46Well-deserved second chance points for him.
21:49And the buzzer sounds to end the first.
21:52And we've got a blowout underway here.
21:54The Raptors out in front.
21:56Opening up a huge gap.
21:59And we'll be back with you for the start of the second quarter when we return.
22:06Next Monday night, November 11th, Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers take on Joakim Noah and the Chicago Bulls.
22:14It's the real deal.
22:27Welcome back, everyone, to Lopsided First Quarter.
22:29And the book's all ready as we start this second quarter.
22:32And a very convincing performance from the Raptors so far.
22:35Yeah, the defense has been terrific.
22:37They came out right from the beginning alert and focused.
22:40And they've been really good at that end of the floor.
22:43And I think Coach has to be pleased with the effort, Steve.
22:46The Raptors shooting a mind-boggling 79% off the floor.
22:51Josh McRoberts out there with Bismack Biambo.
22:54Then there's Pargo.
22:55Then it's Henderson.
22:56And it's Taylor in at the small forward.
22:58That's the Bobcats five.
23:00Let's go now to the sideline and catch up with Doris Burke.
23:04Hey, Doris.
23:05Hi, Kevin.
23:06With the signing of Al Jefferson this summer, the Charlotte Bobcats have acquired the best low post score the team
23:12has had in its nine-year history.
23:14Jefferson is a gym rat who's happy to take younger players under his wing, as he showed when he was
23:20in Utah.
23:20Guys, for a team that has been in rebuild mode, the Bobcats take a big step towards respectability.
23:27Well, nowhere to go but up.
23:29Thanks, Doris.
23:29Well, we'll see if in a new city, a new situation, he's able to take that next step.
23:35Pargo kicks to Taylor.
23:37There's the dish to Pargo.
23:39Floats one up.
23:41Johnson with the puck.
23:43And now the fast break.
23:45Ivy with the ball.
23:46Here's Corosian.
23:47And the dunk to finish it off.
23:50A beauty.
23:51How about that now?
23:53What a sensational finish.
23:55Well, got to be able to get some hang time to do that.
23:57Yeah, you got to rise and levitate.
24:00Suspend yourself.
24:01Yeah.
24:01Levitate.
24:01And glide.
24:03And glide.
24:03You got to glide in and reverse it home.
24:05So sweet.
24:06And it's going to be out of bounds.
24:08The Bobcats will retain possession.
24:12With a pause in the action, let's show you the teams that were best from the line last season.
24:16Fifth, the Raptors.
24:18I think free throw shooting can be contagious.
24:20And it seemed like everybody last season just had the hot hand.
24:26And McRoberts kicks to Pargo.
24:28It's a nice pass to nearby Charlotte.
24:30But Taylor passes to Pargo.
24:34But they get it back.
24:35McRoberts dishes to Biondo.
24:39The feed to Pargo.
24:41Come get it!
24:43Second shot opportunity.
24:45And he sinks the layup.
24:47Pargo's got his first bucket of the night.
24:50Boy, they are having their way in the paint right now.
24:53So many looks right at the rim.
24:55Defensive rotations have been a step slow.
24:57And it's helped them get the ball in close.
24:59Time after time, Steve.
25:01They are wreaking havoc on them with the three-point shot here.
25:04Lazy perimeter defense, Clark.
25:06You've got to take the shooter's airspace away from them.
25:20Shot clock at six.
25:23Top of the key jumper, no good.
25:25That's not a sight you see very often.
25:27I mean, he has a great feel for that jump shot, especially when he's open.
25:33Here's Henderson.
25:35Played in with a nice touch off the glass.
25:38Good aggressive finish on the break.
25:40That's as easy of two points as you could ask for.
25:44Let's it go from the wing.
25:46Henderson pulls it in.
25:48Gerald Henderson coming off his best season, guys.
25:51Three-point shooting was one of his weaknesses.
25:53And he made a huge leap in that area.
25:55Shot around 37% from the yard.
25:57Much better than his first three seasons.
26:03Here in the second quarter, about three minutes played.
26:07And again, no good by Toronto.
26:10The Bobcats have gone just 33% from the field in what's been a cold second quarter for them.
26:15Just three of nine.
26:17Shot by Taylor, no good.
26:19Well, going back to Henderson.
26:20And then the three-point shot, despite his improvement, not one he leaned on that heavily.
26:26Well, that's smart.
26:26Because if you're not a great three-point shooter, you've got to be very selective.
26:30And more often than not, Henderson would shoot the corner three but avoid the longer ones.
26:36That's the sign of maturity.
26:38That's the sign of a player who understands his limitations.
26:40You know, it appeared to be another season where the Raptors would be near the bottom of the league.
26:44But while the terms rock bottom and embarrassing floated around, they made some moves and were able to go on
26:50a run to climb towards the middle of the pack.
26:53Charlotte calls timeout.
26:55Well, we all know the trade for Rudy Gay.
26:57The major move coming last season for the Raptors.
27:00They were able to get a look at the playoff scenario at times.
27:03And, you know, Steve, it looked like they were much more competitive down the stretch.
27:06Yeah, this is a team that has struggled the last few years.
27:09But I think that that spark near the end of the regular season gives them hope.
27:13And now it's time to start that climb, get back into the playoffs, and continue to build and become an
27:20excellent NBA franchise.
27:22Because they have the potential to do so.
27:24Pargo kicks to Jefferson.
27:2711 feet out and he hits it.
27:30Jefferson's got his second bucket of the night.
27:32Closing in on four minutes played here in the second quarter.
27:35For Toronto, they've gone four of seven from the field in this second quarter so far.
27:39AC bounces high off the rim and drops.
27:44That gives him a double-double in this one.
27:47Ten points and ten assists.
27:51Pargo the pass to Zeller.
27:55Inside to Jefferson.
27:56Kicks it to Zeller.
28:01Dishes to Taylor.
28:04From the baseline.
28:06Offensive rebound.
28:08Excellent D there from Petro.
28:16For Toronto, they've gone five of eight from the floor here in the second quarter.
28:20Over 60% shooting.
28:22From deep three-point range.
28:25Shot is no good.
28:26And it's the Bobcats taking it the other way.
28:31The open shot.
28:33Gordon.
28:34DeRozan with the rebound.
28:35I thought he'd make that one.
28:37That's his range and the defense nowhere to be seen.
28:40That rebound and the follow kind of typify what he's all about.
28:44Just gritty, determined play.
28:53Bobcats shooting their seventh attempt at the foul line in this one.
29:01That one misses for Zeller.
29:03You know, coming into last season, the backcourt for Charlotte was full of question marks.
29:07But after the way Kimball Walker blossomed and some of the other guys were able to fill in and step
29:12up,
29:12their backcourt looks a lot better now.
29:15There's the pass to Jefferson.
29:20Sinks that one from the post.
29:23Jefferson's got seven points.
29:25Toronto's gone two or three when they've stepped beyond the arc in the second quarter.
29:30AC dishes to Ivy.
29:33It's good from long range.
29:35And even though the Bobcats would finish near the bottom of the barrel again,
29:38they did show that they have some pieces to build around.
29:41Steve, not only Walker, but also Michael Kidd-Vilchrist as well.
29:46Yeah, I like Jeffrey Taylor, the young forward from Vanderbilt.
29:50They drafted Cody Zeller from Indiana, who looked really good in the summer league
29:56and is proving to be a pretty solid player in the NBA.
29:59So this is a team that is starting to add some talent to this roster.
30:02Well, we've seen that more than a few times.
30:05An easy bucket in the lane.
30:07Yeah, the interior defense simply has been lifeless.
30:10Count that one.
30:12Ivy's got eight points in the quarter.
30:14And guys, they continue to put a lot of pressure on the interior defenders with the way they work down
30:19low.
30:19Well, it's become one of the stories of the first half, Clark, just piling up points in the pink.
30:24Come on, shoot, shoot!
30:27Now here's Zeller.
30:31Taylor kicks to Jefferson.
30:33Four on the clock.
30:35Here's Pargo.
30:38Tries again.
30:39Al Jefferson again.
30:42Jefferson's got nine points.
30:43He's very savvy in traffic.
30:45When he gets inside, has kind of an uncanny way of shielding himself from contact
30:50and finding a way to finish at the rim.
30:52And something else he has is an array of moves in the pink.
30:56You can make a training video for young players to figure out how to play down low
31:01in terms of how he gets it done inside.
31:03And the Raptors making a change here.
31:05Zeller. Novak's checked in.
31:0711 feet away.
31:09It's rebounded by Charlotte.
31:15Here's Pargo.
31:19He passes to Zeller.
31:21He feeds it to Pargo.
31:25Goes back up.
31:27A nice shot by Zeller.
31:30Zeller's got his second bucket of the game to go.
31:32Second chance points have been a big problem for this club defensively.
31:36Well, the initial defense has been fine, but defense is a two-part job.
31:40Forced a tough shot, then you've got to rebound, and that's where they've got to improve.
31:48Stolen away.
31:51Fast break Toronto.
31:53Easy to pass to DeRozan.
31:55Well, Kevin, a look here at last year in the NBA where the Raptors rank.
31:59Third and fewest turnovers per game.
32:01Fifth in free throw percentage.
32:03And for the team scoring numbers, not a strong point for them.
32:06Only top 20 in the league.
32:07This team needs to pick it up offensively.
32:10Very well-coached team, Clark.
32:12I mean, you look at the numbers, and you talked about the few turnovers.
32:16The top five in the league, in fact, in fewest mistakes.
32:19So this is a well-disciplined, well-coached team.
32:22And when they're on their game, they're just one of those teams you hate to play against
32:26because they don't give you anything easy.
32:28You know, this is a trend that's catching on more and more in the NBA,
32:30and now DeMar DeRozan can be added to the list.
32:32He dips his hands in wax prior to the game, so he has a soft feel of the ball.
32:37The paraffin wax, we call it.
32:38Get a rebound!
32:39Kept alive.
32:41Zeller.
32:42Off target at the rim.
32:44The Raptors have gone 7-13 for the field since the start of the second.
32:49And A.C. kicks to Lowe.
32:52Knocks down the three ball.
32:54And for DeRozan, Coach Casey wants him aggressive, attacking the basket.
32:58He needs that soft touch.
33:00Well, DeRozan, yeah, he has to become a better shooter.
33:03And as he does, it will make him that much more effective when he's putting the ball on the floor
33:08and getting to the rim, which he's already so good at.
33:13Lock at 6.
33:18Taylor against DeRozan.
33:21And it's off the back rim.
33:22No good.
33:24Toronto's gotten out from three-point land in the second quarter, going 4-5 from downtown.
33:29Boy, they've looked good in the open floor today.
33:31That's had a lot to do with their success.
33:33Well, they've been doing the right thing, Steve.
33:35Anytime they've had numbers, they've gone straight up court with it right away.
33:38Boom!
33:42Now here's Jefferson, defended by Novak.
33:45Jefferson kicks to Pargo.
33:47Shut up, shut up!
33:48Back to Jefferson.
33:52They get it back.
33:54A nice shot by Zeller.
33:57Zeller's got his third bucket of the night.
33:59It was a slow start for him, but he started to take off since we hit the second quarter, guys.
34:05And A.C. kicks to Ivy.
34:07And again, Toronto with the triple.
34:10It seems that every pass they make is leading to a score here.
34:13I mean, that's just exquisite ball movement.
34:16Yeah, they're making the right play.
34:18They're working together.
34:19And they're just looking for the best shot they can every possession.
34:22Out of bounds, Bobcats ball as Charlotte keeps possession.
34:26The Raptors making a switch here.
34:40DeRozan against Gordon.
34:45Six on the shot clock.
34:48Pass to Walker.
34:50From deep.
34:52Gets it to go.
34:54Walker's got 11 points.
34:56That shot becomes effortless for him when the D is so relaxed.
34:59They've got to get more intense.
35:01Lowry dishes to Hamilton.
35:04DeRozan passes to Hamilton.
35:07Kidd Gilchrist with the steal.
35:12Outside, Walker.
35:15Kidd Gilchrist, no luck.
35:19Guys, we have seen them with a lot of good ball movement.
35:22Well, you like the smooth operating they're showing you here.
35:24I mean, things are clicking.
35:25And more importantly, it makes them tough to defend.
35:28Yeah, there's no agenda.
35:29I mean, the ball is just moving to whoever is open.
35:31And as a result, they've kind of developed a clicking kind of pace to their game.
35:36It's been fun to watch.
35:41And here's Lowry.
35:44It's Novak from outside.
35:47Heywood with the rebound.
35:50Well defended that time.
35:51He's a shooter that the defense has to close down on quickly when he's ready to pull that trigger.
35:56You've got to be in his face and not give him any space.
35:59And you can see they recognize that, Clark.
36:02I mean, they are not going to give him that look.
36:03It just hasn't been a very good day for him, guys.
36:06They need him to start burying some of those.
36:08Here's Gordon.
36:10Sweet little floater.
36:11Yeah, not just an everyday finish.
36:13He put a little pizzazz on that one, guys.
36:19Here's DeRozan.
36:21Not wasting any time and taking the shot and knocking it down.
36:25DeRozan's got 11 here in this quarter alone.
36:28Charlotte's gone 1-3 from way outside since the start of the second quarter.
36:36Locker against Lowry.
36:40Here's Zeller.
36:41And you can count it.
36:42He'll go to the line with a chance to make it three.
36:45Starting to get a little momentum here after that scoreless first quarter.
36:49Some changes for Toronto.
36:51Hansborough comes in for Quincy Acy.
36:53And Rudy Gay is subbed in for DeMar DeRozan.
36:56They did a good job in the first quarter getting themselves to the line.
37:00But here in the second, they've gone away from it.
37:02Well, everything's become perimeter-oriented, Clark.
37:04And you really have to be penetrating and looking inside, keeping that defense honest.
37:13Now Walker, he's got 11.
37:17Outside, Gordon.
37:20It's Kid Gilchrist on the wing.
37:22Shot clock at six.
37:25Charlotte needs to get a shot off.
37:27From deep, Walker.
37:29That's good.
37:31Walker's got 14 points for the game.
37:34You know, he started out hot, and he's only gotten hotter.
37:37He could be in for one of those games.
37:41Novak kicks to Lowry.
37:42Feeds it to Novak.
37:44Back to Lowry.
37:51He dishes it to Hamilton.
37:54Jacks up a three.
37:56Hits the bucket.
37:57He's got nine.
37:59Oh, the rapid-fire threes coming from everywhere.
38:03I thought it might be a little imprudent to try to get those points right back.
38:07But it worked.
38:08And through the first half, a pretty lot.
38:10Now, presented by Sprint.
38:14It's Wednesday night at the 2K Sports Studio.
38:17And this is the Halftime Report.
38:20A terrific start for the Raptors.
38:22A losing record for them in this early NBA season.
38:26They'll try to battle back.
38:28Washington leading against the Sprint Halftime Report.
38:31Presented by Sprint.
38:37And as we welcome you back, we begin our second half.
38:39So far, not a tightly contested game, guys.
38:42But, you know, anything can happen.
38:43A fantastic game from DeMar DeRozan so far.
38:46I know we've said this many times before, but I'll say it again.
38:50He had a great first half.
38:52Just an explosive offensive display there.
38:55At the end of the day, I wouldn't be surprised if we're talking about what a great second half he
38:59had.
38:59He can usually keep it going for all four quarters.
39:03So, for Toronto right now, Lowry out there with Royal Ivy.
39:07Then it's Quincy Ace.
39:09Then it's DeRozan.
39:10And it's Johnson in at the four-man position.
39:13And Walker kicks to Jefferson.
39:16I see him.
39:18No good.
39:19Great D that time for Macy.
39:21Toronto shooting 71% all-in-all in this one.
39:25They've been brilliant offensively.
39:28The shot by Lowry.
39:29No good.
39:30Great look.
39:31Disappointing result.
39:32You know, most times he knocks that one down.
39:34Here's Kidd Gilchrist.
39:36Johnson with the block.
39:41Passes to DeRozan.
39:43From deep.
39:44And again, Toronto with the triple.
39:46And we've seen a few mix-ups defensively out there on the perimeter.
39:51More than a few.
39:52I mean, the open looks they've allowed from long range have turned into a lot of points.
39:56And Kidd Gilchrist kicks to Jefferson.
39:59Let's it go from 14.
40:02So he gets the whistle.
40:03Contact on the way up.
40:04And two shots coming up.
40:05You know, for as much as Jefferson scores in the low post and all the attention that he gets,
40:11one of the more underrated aspects of his game is that he is rarely careless with the ball.
40:16That free throw missing.
40:18And for Al Jefferson, great footwork and fakes down low.
40:22A very nice way of maneuvering his way in a congested area.
40:26Yeah, he's got huge hands, Kevin.
40:28He's so able to gather and go up with that right-handed hook.
40:32That kind of one-handed push hook.
40:34And, you know, he dominates that block.
40:38Here's A.C.
40:40And count it.
40:41Two points with a chance for one more at the free throw line.
40:45And their offense is flowing.
40:46It's clicking right now at the beginning of the second half.
40:49They've made three of their first four attempts.
40:51Bobcats shooting 38% from the field.
40:54A pretty weak showing for them.
40:57And Kidd Gilchrist kicks to Gordon.
41:00Hits it from three-point range.
41:03Gordon's got seven points.
41:05I like the offensive awareness to exploit that lack of coverage on that play.
41:09The 19-foot shot.
41:10And the Raptors tack on two more.
41:13And their field goal percentage continues to climb.
41:15They've really shot the ball well here today so far.
41:18Yeah, and it's all about quality shot selection, smart shot selection.
41:22They've been very patient on offense.
41:24And good on the basket.
41:26Book it.
41:26Four of their last five makes came off of a high-quality shot inside.
41:30Yeah, that's textbook basketball.
41:32Just having their way down low.
41:35And A.C. kicks to Lowe.
41:37And again, Toronto with the triple.
41:40What a floor leader he's been at the offensive end.
41:43You know, he's done a terrific job of moving the ball around, sharing it, dispersing it, and running the show.
41:50Goal!
41:51Kid Gilchrist, the pass to Walker.
41:55And it's blocked by A.C.
41:56Let's go!
41:57Come on!
41:59Fast break, Toronto.
42:01DeRozan leading the charge.
42:03Ivy with the bucket.
42:04Now that is a quick bucket.
42:06Pretty good in transition.
42:07That's right.
42:08That's exactly right.
42:09He loves when he gets the chance to get out and run.
42:12That's when he's at his best.
42:14And it's Walker penetrating.
42:16Offensive rebound.
42:18And pout the basket.
42:20He was fouled.
42:21And he's going to the line for one more.
42:23Well, the number one priority for a defense when you face this guy is to keep him getting anywhere from
42:29the basket.
42:29Because he's just so strong as a finisher.
42:32And the other thing about him, his hands.
42:34A terrific asset of his.
42:35Very quick and strong.
42:37As a ball handler, he's the last guy you want defending you.
42:41Come around!
42:43Woo!
42:43Ball!
42:44In the wild!
42:46Wide open look.
42:49A.C.
42:50A.C.
42:54A.C.
43:02A.C.
43:07A.C.
43:09A.C.
43:09A.C.
43:09A.C.
43:10A.C.
