00:01:16The City Thunder, Westbrook and Harden in the backcourt, Duran is out there with Perkins,

00:01:21and it's Cook in at the 3 spot.

00:01:23And for Phoenix.

00:01:34Nash at the 1 with Vince Carter at the 2.

00:02:13Gortat in at the center, filling out the middle.

00:02:16Beyond the arc, Steve Nash, and that's good.

00:02:20Nash has got his first three points of the game.

00:02:23And as Steve just said, it was the first game of the season series.

00:02:26You never know what implications these contests could have in terms of playoff position in the conference.

00:02:32You know, Kevin, still a little early to know how things are going to shake out in terms of that.

00:02:36But definitely something that these teams will think about down the road.

00:02:40Kept alive.

00:02:42Back to Carter.

00:02:50Gortat against Perkins.

00:02:55Well, the defense recognized how dangerous he is out there and got right up on him.

00:02:59Didn't give him any space.

00:03:00The Suns missed out on the playoffs for only the fourth time in the last 23 years last season.

00:03:07And with the team getting older and no outstanding young players, it may be a while before Phoenix returns to

00:03:14prominence.

00:03:15Now let's go to Doris Burke, who had a chance to catch up with head coach Scott Brooks.

00:03:28Obviously, we talked about Steve Nash, because you can't argue he's one of the best point guards over the past

00:03:33few decades.

00:03:33Coach told me that Nash's ability to control tempo, to get everyone involved, and to communicate so seamlessly with his

00:03:41teammates is what makes him so dangerous.

00:03:43Thanks, Doris.

00:03:45And, you know, for the Suns, what do you think is their best path for them right now?

00:03:49Could they bounce back to where they were, you think?

00:03:52In the short term, Kevin, I'd have to say no.

00:03:55I mean, this team, a few years ago, had a legitimate chance to win a title.

00:04:00I mean, now the talent level has dropped off, and we know you start right there.

00:04:03I mean, you've got to have talent to think about a championship.

00:04:07And it's easy to see why the word rebuild kind of floats around.

00:04:12I think that takes time, and that's where the Suns are right now.

00:04:15And for so long, they've been looking for a center.

00:04:16Now they've got Lopez, they've got Gorchak, but they don't have anything around them.

00:04:19Or at least things that they're really building for.

00:04:21It just reminds you of how hard it is to get the pieces together to play at a high level

00:04:27and to have a chance to compete for and pursue a championship.

00:04:30Here's Nash following the score by Oklahoma City.

00:04:52Boy, they got so many free throws in that game, Clark.

00:04:55And I thought their aggressiveness was really key.

00:04:57They did a nice job being aggressive and drawing those fouls.

00:05:01And any time you can do that,

00:05:03that bodes well for your chances of winning.

00:05:06And the shot is good.

00:05:10You know, that's a case there, Kevin,

00:05:12of him making a pass to a spot,

00:05:13and then he let his teammate run right into it.

00:05:16Well executed.

00:05:18That doesn't go either for Durant.

00:05:20And Kevin Durant has been the league's leading scorer two years running.

00:05:24In fact, his numbers actually dropped last year,

00:05:26but he still averaged 28 points per game.

00:05:28He's only 23 years of age.

00:05:55I mean, you watch him and you look at his frame.

00:05:57He's a little taller, but he puts you in mind of George Iceman Gervin,

00:06:01how easily he's able to score his long limbs

00:06:05and just the ability to score from a variety of angles

00:06:08and make it look easy.

00:06:10I mean, he never seems to be laboring to score the basketball.

00:06:14I had to believe that at one time or another he's watching Gervin tape.

00:06:18Iceman could put you on ice.

00:06:20Yes, he could.

00:06:21He could put you on ice with all the scoring he could do.

00:06:24Had a great start offensively.

00:06:27Yeah, they've come out strong.

00:06:28I mean, really scoring and playing with confidence.

00:09:45I think Clark around the league, the Thunder have been held up as the example of how you build a

00:09:50contender from the ground up.

00:09:51And certainly, Steve, lived up to that phrase, I thought, this past season.

00:09:54Yeah, they really seem to have all the pieces that a team needs to contend for a championship.

00:09:59Star player in Kevin Durant, great point guard.

00:10:02Russell Westbrook, they've got complementary pieces as well.

00:10:05And now it's just a matter of letting this team grow and move forward together.

00:10:18The first free throw is good.

00:10:20Well, the Suns missed the playoffs a year ago.

00:10:22And there's a lot of speculation about whether they will begin a rebuilding process.

00:10:27Steve Nash, obviously getting up there in years.

00:10:30So the question for Phoenix, do they trade him?

00:10:32Do they keep him?

00:10:33Do they still try to build around him?

00:10:35One thing's for sure, they need an infusion of young talent.

00:10:38But all good questions to look for answers for us, Steve.

00:10:41Certainly, the Suns need more young talent.

00:10:44This is a team that was selling first-round picks only a few short seasons ago, Clark.

00:10:49And, Kevin, that's rarely a good idea.

00:10:51I mean, even on a stacked veteran team like the Suns, where you look at players like Luau Dang, Rajon

00:10:57Rondo.

00:10:58I mean, those players selected with some of the picks the Suns sold away.

00:11:03Sometimes those moves can come back to make you squirm a little bit.

00:11:07Yes.

00:11:08So it's Phoenix now, after Oklahoma City gets the three.

00:11:48Well, Oklahoma City has been gradually improving over the last few seasons.

00:11:54And one of the things they've done better at is winning on the road.

00:11:57Last year, 25-16.

00:12:07Number one, Steve Nash.

00:12:09Well, he'd love to have the same kind of season this year.

00:12:12I mean, nobody was better last year at creating easy baskets for their teammates.

00:12:27Boy, you've got to love that kind of anticipatory defense.

00:12:31And for the Thunder, that continued improvement on the road.

00:12:36Clark, one of the signals of their growth into a legitimate contender.

00:12:40Well, Kevin, they've got a lot of the things you need to have to win on the road.

00:12:44So, they rebound the basketball.

00:12:46They're a good free-throw shooting team.

00:12:49They've got the best score in the league.

00:12:50One of the best scores in the league in Kevin Durant.

00:12:53And they can put the ball in the basket as a team.

00:12:56Again, I really think you've got to be able to score when you go on the road.

00:12:59Offensively, you've got to be able to put pressure on the home team's defense.

00:13:04And Oklahoma City has that capability.

00:14:12Kind of a strange season for Aaron Brooks last year, guys.

00:14:15He was unhappy when Houston didn't give him a contract extension.

00:14:18So the Rockets eventually traded him to Phoenix for Goran Dragic.

00:14:32And he makes the first.

00:14:34You know, Steve, when you talk about Aaron Brooks and every point you made is a good one,

00:14:37it wasn't really the best of fits for him.

00:14:39And I think here in Phoenix, it has been a nice fit.

00:14:42He's got speed and shooting ability.

00:14:44And he can definitely play an up-tempo game.

00:14:47And that's Phoenix's style.

00:14:50And that one goes in, too, from the line that time.

00:14:53You know, guys, you think back to a team like the Suns.

00:14:56They had a terrific shot at winning the championship just a few short seasons ago.

00:15:01And it doesn't seem like they're in real contention right now going forward.

00:15:05Not a really great start for him as he just isn't shooting the ball that effectively here early on.

00:15:15He's covered by Westbrook.

00:15:19Brooks, the pass to Petrus.

00:15:22Over Westbrook.

00:15:23And again, it's the Suns missing.

00:15:26We're talking about the Suns fall from contention.

00:15:29Some of it age.

00:15:29But, Steve, a number of tough breaks and maybe a few self-inflicted wounds along the way.

00:15:34Well, Steve Nash is getting older.

00:15:36Still was a very productive player a season ago.

00:15:38I think the biggest difference, though, for Phoenix was not having Amari Stoudemire,

00:15:42who left as a free agent for New York.

00:15:44So the talent base went down, and now Phoenix is faced with some question marks as they look to the

00:15:50future.

00:15:50They're going to have to make some changes eventually and kind of reload to get back to that championship-style

00:15:55level.

00:15:56Well, Oklahoma City is a team that has gotten better and better the last few years.

00:16:00And they continue to get better against the Western Conference to a five-game improvement in their record versus the

00:16:07West a year ago from the season before.

00:16:10Here's Cephalosha.

00:16:19He's just putting on a dominant display of offense.

00:17:12Steve, you talked about that five-game improvement.

00:17:14But they match up well, it seems, Clark, with just about anybody in the Western Conference.

00:17:19And I'll even throw the East in there, too.

00:17:20Yeah, no question.

00:17:22I mean, I like this team's versatility.

00:17:23When you look at the Thunder, they've got a lot of things.

00:17:26I mean, they've got size, strength, athleticism.

00:17:28And you need those ingredients if you're going to be a contender.

00:17:31And you have to be able to win different ways.

00:17:33And Oklahoma City is the kind of team that's growing into that.

00:17:36A well-rounded roster.

00:17:38They're young.

00:17:40So as they get more seasoning, they're going to be a really difficult team to handle for a long time.

00:20:14They let Amari go to the Knicks, but then they turned around with a completely different front office

00:20:19and spent almost as much on Channing Frye, Josh Childress, and Clark Hakeem Warwick.

00:20:24It seemed at times a little confusing.

00:20:26Yeah, baffling would be another word to use there.

00:20:29I mean, historically, Kevin, those mid-level deals for average players can be just as risky.

00:20:34So some interesting choices by the Suns' top brass, and we'll see how they pan out.

00:20:39You need to give them a little time, but that usually takes a little longer than you want it to.

00:20:47Here's Muhammad, and again, it's Oklahoma City.

00:20:50Now, they're playing so well offensively, and that's led to this double-digit lead.

00:20:55Guys, no resting on their laurels.

00:20:57They continue to get after it as if they might even be down.

00:21:01That's how they're playing, with that kind of attitude.

00:23:46Part of that was his all-around play, a high-energy player, a good three-point shooter.

00:23:51And part of it was just what he means to the team.

00:24:06Chemistry-wise, a great teammate.

00:24:08Guy's been an artist with that three-point shot.

00:24:10He sure has been, Steve.

00:24:12I mean, the majority of his points have come from out there.

00:24:18To end the run.
