00:00As global tensions push up fuel costs, more Kenyan riders are turning to electric motorbikes as a cheaper alternative.
00:08The shift is accelerating demand for battery-powered two-wheelers,
00:13with dealers reporting a sharp rise in purchases as commuters and delivery workers look to cut daily transport expenses.
00:21Since the war outbreak in the Middle East and the cost of fuel hiking in Kenya,
00:30we have seen an increase in the sale of the bikes.
00:35The increase is more than 40 percent. 40 percent increase in the sale of the bike.
00:41Charging an electric bike can cost about half as much as fueling a petrol-powered motorcycle,
00:47making a major difference for workers who rely on their bikes to earn a living.
00:53When I was using a fuel bike, I used to, by day I used to use around 1,000 for
01:00fuel.
01:02But with electric, I use 600.
01:06I can swipe twice or twice, but most of the time I swipe twice.
01:13So, you see, it's saving me almost 400.
01:17All 500 a day than I used to, to pay on a fuel bike.
01:25The surge in demand is attracting more players to Kenya's growing e-mobility sector.
01:31Industry leaders say it underscores the risk of fuel imports
01:35and the benefits of locally generated energy.
01:39War has never been good anywhere.
01:41It's unfortunate that it's happening.
01:44However, the story that we get from this is, as a country, we don't have control over fuel.
01:50100 percent of the fuel in the country is imported.
01:52The energy that we source for the EVs is locally sourced.
01:5693 percent from renewable.
01:58So, I think this is a wake-up call to the country to look at opportunities
02:03and providing incentives and supporting the EV growth in the country
02:06and we'll basically be able to create a sustainable transport.
02:09As global tensions disrupt energy markets,
02:12Kenya's electric mobility sector is gaining momentum,
02:15accelerating the shift to cleaner and more affordable transport.
