00:08What I think about caging baboons is that it will never work. Baboons need to roam freely.
00:15They roam over a huge area every single day foraging for food and then they go to roost.
00:21Yes, they stay, they're territorial, they stay in particular areas, but they need to be free.
00:27They're wild animals, they're not domestic animals.
00:30You cannot put them in a cage and you cannot put electric fencing around them
00:34because they will kill themselves trying to get out.
00:41The real outcomes for both of these troops where they live is negative across the spectrum.
00:47And so for that basis we recognise that it's not sustainable to keep them in that environment.
00:52We need to remove them. All options were considered.
00:55We looked at whether there's a possibility of relocating the troops as troops to a wild environment.
01:01And that's a very poor ecological decision to make, so we didn't make that decision.
01:06And then we're left with two very difficult decisions.
01:09We could either cull the troops, which is arguably the ecological solution,
01:12or we could find a space that we could set up an urban wildlife centre and allow those animals in
01:18those troops
01:19to live out their lives in a high standard of care with a quality of environment,
01:24with a quality of life that we can offer them. All of their needs will be met.
01:28It's not good for them because they're meant to be wild animals. They need to be free.
01:33So it came to me that if you're having your home, people are coming into your house,
01:40chasing you out of your house, where you will go?
01:43You know, and they make these cages for them, of which they're not meant to be locked up. So they're
01:52not free.
