On The Midday Show, Andy and Randy examine the quarterback situations around the NFL that have become increasingly awkward. From contract disputes and holdouts to uncertain futures and looming decisions, they break down which teams are facing the most uncomfortable questions under center. Plus, how will the Knicks respond in Game 4?
Transcript
00:00You know, that's the thing that you want to have.
00:02You know, say a good worker.
00:04Because even though it's awkward, you should have a good working relationship.
00:06I just remember when Russell Wilson and Matt Flynn were in their quarterback competition
00:09and Russell Wilson was asked if they're looking at tape together.
00:12And he goes, I'm not watching tape with him.
00:13Yeah.
00:14Yeah.
00:16But that's why.
00:16Because I'm trying to take his job.
00:17And the thing about it, maybe I have listened to the wrong clips of Michael and Tua
00:21because when I heard Michael's clip about the competition,
00:23it didn't look like Michael and Tua were friends.
00:25Oh, it didn't?
00:25Yeah, it didn't sound like it to me.
00:26I can't stop raving about it.
00:28Yeah, I haven't heard that.
00:30It must have been happening last week when I won't hear it.
00:31Especially Tua.
00:31Because I didn't hear nothing like that.
00:33What did you hear?
00:34I just heard the way Michael sounded.
00:35He was like, I'm going to do what I got to do.
00:38Oh, yeah.
00:39Yeah, Michael's more kind of understated anyway.
00:42He's not going to really say much.
00:42But, yeah, look, I hope behind the scenes they're feeling like that.
00:46We don't need buddy buddies.
00:48You know the other one that got a little weird the past day or two is in Vegas
00:54where Cousins refuses to, like, allow himself to be called a mentor
00:58to Fernando Mendoza.
00:59As he should.
01:00As he should.
01:02They've kind of been in line for a while, and then he's like,
01:04it's a bit of a reach to consider me a mentor.
01:07As he should.
01:07Because he's trying to play.
01:09Yeah, as he should.
01:10That's why when we went all the way back to it was Ryan Tannehill and Malik, wasn't it?
01:14I don't know who said it first, but the answer was right then, and it's right now.
01:18It's not your job to be their mentor.
01:19It's not my damn job.
01:20You see these coaches, it's their damn job.
01:22I'll be a good teammate, but that extends itself this far.
01:26Like, I don't have to do extra stuff.
01:28I'm not arm around.
01:29I'm not underwing, whatever.
01:31Like, that can happen at other positions because other positions,
01:34multiple guys get to be on the field at the same time.
01:36Yes.
01:36Quarterback, there's one.
01:37One.
01:38Especially when they're competing for a starting job in the future of the franchise
01:40like what's happening in Minnesota.
01:42Well, kind of.
01:43And here as well.
01:44But anyway, yeah, Kyler's going to win that job.
01:49Yeah.
01:50I don't think he's winning the job.
01:51It's Kyler's job.
01:53Yeah.
01:53It's Kyler's job.
01:55It's Kyler's job.
01:55Now, that is also a similarity that I see.
01:58I do think it'll be a competition between Tua and Penix,
02:01but I think the new guy is going to win the job here too.
02:04But if we all agree that it's Kyler's job, and I agree with you both,
02:08no competition, then why isn't he getting the reps?
02:10I don't know.
02:11And would it be beneficial at this point in the offseason if he were?
02:14I think he's fine at this point.
02:16You know what I mean?
02:17He obviously doesn't feel that way, or he wouldn't have brought it up, right?
02:20I know, but we can't say it's no big deal for Penix to be resting on days in June
02:24and then be like, it's a big deal for Kyler to be getting.
02:26Yeah, but again, it's just.
02:27You know what I mean?
02:27But it's a real competition here.
02:29It's not there.
02:30Right.
02:31I don't know.
02:31I guess it's about J.J.'s feelings.
02:33I don't know.
02:35Whatever.
02:36Exactly.
02:37Whatever.
02:38Whatever.
02:38NBA playoffs tonight.
02:39Yes.
02:40NBA playoffs.
02:40Finals.
02:42Game four.
02:44I think we talked about it.
02:45Game three just seemed like there was so much going on.
02:49Outside of it just being a basketball game.
02:50Yeah, it was a whole circus.
02:52Yeah, a whole thing.
02:53And is it before?
02:54And now it seemed like it can go back to just being a basketball game.
02:58Yeah.
02:58I mean, I hope so.
02:59You don't care who's there.
03:00I do wonder how much the guys, does that affect the game?
03:04You know what I mean?
03:04Hopefully not that much.
03:05I hope not.
03:06But I think my biggest thing that I don't want tonight to be is the referees being the damn
03:10story.
03:11I agree.
03:11Because that's all people have been talking about for the last two days.
03:14The mush.
03:15The Mike Brown talking about the free throw discrepancies.
03:18All these different things.
03:18I just don't want that to be a part of tonight.
03:20Yeah.
03:21I just don't.
03:22Be honest with you.
03:22I just don't.
03:23I think the Wemby face push should have been a foul.
03:25I think he should.
03:26I mean, you know.
03:27I don't know that it needed to be a flagrant or whatever.
03:29But I think it should have been a foul.
03:31It wasn't.
03:31Okay.
03:32Outside of that, I thought the game was really well officiated.
03:34I thought the teams were really physical.
03:36And I thought that the refs allowed them to be.
03:38And I think that's great.
03:40But they've been sitting around listening for the last two days about what's going on.
03:43That's my only.
03:43I haven't had an issue with the officiating.
03:45I just think.
03:46I thought game two was officiated worse than game three was.
03:48I just don't want them to be a part of it.
03:50You know what I mean?
03:51I don't want them to call the game tighter.
03:52I don't want them to, you know, have to, you know, set the tone.
03:57I don't like when referees set the tone for a game.
03:59Yeah.
04:00I mean, right.
04:01Unless somebody comes out and does something stupid early.
04:04Like, oh, we see how they're going to call this game right now.
04:06I don't want that.
04:07I just don't want that right there.
04:08My thing is, you know, the retaliation and all that.
04:11Get out of here, this soft ass.
04:12Ain't nobody retaliating.
04:14Yeah, no one's going to do that.
04:14You know, because the thing about it is, now the referees are going to be looking at that
04:17closely.
04:17So if you come set a screen on Wimby, okay, you can screen him.
04:22Yeah.
04:22You know, but if somebody does something dumb, they're going to get kicked out of the game
04:25and then you're going to cost your team a chance to win.
04:28Yeah.
04:28If the Knicks win, they're up three, one.
04:30Yes.
04:30Why the hell do I need to retaliate?
04:32Okay.
04:32Everybody gets mush.
04:33Let's retaliate by winning the championship.
04:35That would be the best retaliation possible.
04:38If they, I get, I don't see them doing anything, doing anything sort of outside the lines in
04:43this one.
04:43Um, and I hope that they don't, and I hope that the refs aren't on alert because of what
04:47anybody said.
04:47And I don't think that they will be because I do think that it's been a pretty well-officiated
04:51series by and large.
04:52Um, I just think it's two really evenly matched teams that have played three really good games.
04:57Five points.
04:58Five points.
04:59Yeah.
05:00And it very easily could have gone.
05:02I mean, I felt like, um, San Antonio probably, well, I don't know.
05:06They had to come back down double digits in the fourth quarter, but it felt like they were
05:09going to win game two.
05:10And then it kind of felt like the Knicks were going to end up getting game three.
05:13Those games went the opposite direction.
05:15But again, that's what great series are.
05:17Um, I hope that that's what tonight is again.
05:19And I have no reason to think that it won't be the difference to me tonight is going to
05:23be if the Knicks kind of other guys don't show up the way that they did it in game three.
05:28You're going to have Bridges has to play.
05:30He has to play.
05:31If they're going to win the championship, Bridges has to play.
05:33He stayed.
05:34He was in foul trouble early in game three.
05:36Absolutely.
05:37Noby was great.
05:38That's when they're good.
05:39They need to go back to the play the way they played before.
05:41You know, when they went on his 13 game win streak, they need to get caught involved.
05:45He has not scored a point in three, fourth quarters.
05:48That is correct.
05:49Yes.
05:50Which is why it's always dumb to be doing NBA finals, MVP stuff after one or two games
05:54anyway.
05:55Yeah.
05:55But that's makes it the dumbest.
05:57Yes.
05:57He hasn't scored in the fourth quarter.
05:58Fourth quarter.
05:59He's playing.
06:00He's playing well.
06:01Jalen Brunson has as many assists as he has turnovers.
06:04Yeah.
06:04He's shooting 30.
06:05Like, he's getting his point total.
06:08He's just getting, I think, I saw this right this morning, 81 shots.
06:1281 shots, 83 points.
06:13Yes.
06:14Yeah.
06:14Like.
06:14As many assists as turnovers.
06:15Yes.
06:16But they're hounding his ass.
06:17They're on him, dude.
06:18If he wasn't as good as he is, it would be way worse than that.
06:20Yeah.
06:20And the thing about it, they're playing him tough.
06:22I love himself, Castle.
06:23I mean, this dude, he's a tough, tough-minded guy.
06:26But then, okay, let's switch somebody else on him.
06:29You know?
06:29And I think that's the biggest thing with him is that they're making him uncomfortable.
06:32And what happens when, you know, eventually you wear it out?
06:35He ain't the biggest dude in the world.
06:36But his biggest asset, when he gets to his spots, is he likes to push off.
06:41Well, he's not pushing them.
06:42They're not going anywhere.
06:43Yeah, you can't.
06:43And they're making the shots so tough on him.
06:45And so, my thing, who comes out aggressive more, him or Wimby?
06:48Because we understand, when Wimby comes out aggressive, San Antonio's a different team.
06:53We understand that.
06:54Just like in game three, he comes out two dunks in the layup to start the game.
06:57What was that?
06:58Because when Jalen Brunson comes out aggressive and he's making it, he's going to be aggressive.
07:02But it's like, is he making the shot?
07:04Because one of these games, he's going to go off.
07:06And he's going to be efficient and all those different things.
07:08Is it tonight?
07:09Is it going to be, you know, because I know Steph Gassel said, yeah, we're going to win tonight.
07:13We're going to win next game.
07:14We're going to win next game.
07:15Great.
07:15All right.
07:15Good.
07:16That's exactly the mentality you should have.
07:17Good.
07:18I don't know.
07:18Yeah.
07:18That's the guy.
07:20And that's what he looked like in the fourth quarter, too.
07:22They got him the ball in that must-foul situation because they knew he was the guy they wanted
07:26on the free throw.
07:27That's a hell of an amount of trust for a 21-year-old.
07:31You know what I mean?
07:32Yeah.
07:32For a guy who's in his second year to be like, yeah.
07:35And it was Fox that kicked it to him, too.
07:36And he was standing there.
07:37He stood right up there.
07:38And he nailed him.
07:39Okay.
07:39Just no pressure.
07:40Didn't touch the rim.
07:41Fox is another one.
07:42Like, he's got to stay aggressive and play better and all those things.
07:44But he had big shots down the stretch.
07:46We talked about it, like, late in the game.
07:47Put the ball in his hands.
07:48Let him settle things down.
07:49All right.
07:50All right, guys.
07:50We're up by five.
07:52All right?
07:53We've got up by five.
07:54Two and a half minutes left.
07:55Let's get in our offense.
07:57Let's do a high-screen roll or high whatever it is with Wemby.
08:02And Wemby, take a good shot.
08:03I'm interested to see what Wemby looks like just because in the OKC series on days
08:11where they just had the one day off, he looked like he had donated plasma those days.
08:16Like, he looked exhausted in those games, which is – I mean, again,
08:19I know he's playing more minutes than he's ever played before.
08:21And he also is asked to do everything.
08:23Like you just said, he's setting high screens and then rolling all the way to the basket
08:26from the half court and then also defending the entire paint on the other side of the floor.
08:31Like, if they had one of those little monitors on him throughout the game,
08:36he probably runs 10 miles the whole game, the amount of action that he has.
08:39So, if he looks tired tonight, then he's not going to be able to do the kind of stuff
08:43that he did to start game three, right?
08:45I mean, don't look tired.
08:46You're young, right?
08:47That's what you say.
08:48But, like, he looked like that against OKC multiple times.
08:51For no explanation that I have other than he was.
08:53Right.
08:54You know?
08:54I mean, he played the whole fourth quarter last game.
08:56I know.
08:56You know?
08:57And he's going to have to be – this game is going to come down to the wire.
09:00Totally.
09:00Probably.
09:00Absolutely.
09:01And so he's going to have to play – he's going to be 40-plus this game.
09:04And if he looks tired, they're going to get beat.
09:06Yeah.
09:07Because that's what happened in those games against OKC.
09:09I mean, that's – I mean, he's going to – again, because of the way they're playing
09:13and everything, Josh Hart's – he's got to go off the line.
09:16Josh Hart's got to take advantage of those things.
09:18But the thing about it, if he has it going, you've got to keep – beat the ball.
09:21Like, don't go away from the hot hand.
09:23I know it's Josh Hart and all those different things, but he's capable.
09:25And we've seen when he's given opportunity and when he's making his shots how difficult it'd be.
09:29Spurs have to shoot better from three, too.
09:31And Dylan Harper has to shoot better from three.
09:32As much as I love him, he – yeah.
09:34He was one of eight from three.
09:37Yeah.
09:37De'Aaron Fox was 0 of five from three.
09:40Steph Castle was 2 of five, but obviously one of those was that incredibly important prayer
09:45late in the game that went in that helped them win.
09:48Those guys can't go a combined three of 18 from three.
09:51If that happens again, they're probably going to lose.
09:53They're probably going to lose.
09:53Yeah.
09:54Or don't take as many.
09:55Like, De'Aaron Fox doesn't even seem like he wants to take threes.
09:57Don't take any.
