00:00All right, Dan Quinn was asked, after he announced that Jaden was going to be out on Sunday,
00:08he was asked about how close Jaden Daniels was to playing.
00:13Here's what he said.
00:14Dan, how close was Jaden to possibly being an option for this week?
00:19Certainly, anytime you can practice, that's a big deal.
00:21And so for him to get back, that was a big step for us, John,
00:25to see what it looked like and where it would go.
00:27So typical for him, like, you know, he's more ready than you expect.
00:32So that's just kind of how he is.
00:35But we'll get a whole week for him and get back at it, get his elbow, his body, everything back
00:40right.
00:40But it was really impressive to see it.
00:42There you go, Quinn.
00:44I'll tell you, he really likes to talk about how tough Jaden is and the whole thing.
00:48He doesn't have to do that.
00:50He's being very kind.
00:52But he's out.
00:54He's out Sunday.
00:55We'll reassess next week.
00:57So you get a lot from Quinn when you ask a question.
01:01There's no doubt about that.
01:04All right.
01:04301-230-0980.
01:06301-230-0980.
01:10Keys to a win Sunday against Indianapolis.
01:12And are you okay with the decision to start Mariota?
01:16I do think that next week we'll be having a conversation about Jaden Daniels being the starter against the Giants.
01:22How good would it be to get two without him?
01:26The Seattle game and the Indy game.
01:29This feels like, you know, I don't want to say a pivotal point in the season because I think that
01:35would be very, very hyperbolic.
01:39It's a long way to go after this.
01:41There's still 13 games after this.
01:43But you do kind of feel like at 1-3 that you're on that uphill climb to get back into
01:52some meaningful football opportunities later in the season.
01:56Two and two, given how the first two went and the injury, and not just to him but to several
02:03players, would really, really speak highly of just the team, the situation compared to last year.
02:13Really want them to get this one Sunday.
02:16I really feel like this is – look, I think they'll be favored over the Giants next week with Jaden
02:23coming back.
02:24I do.
02:25But the Giants are pretty good defensively.
02:28Who knows who the quarterback will be.
02:30The Colts are gettable, man.
02:32I know we're an underdog.
02:33And I think some of you don't understand it.
02:35I kind of don't understand it either.
02:37Which makes me think that maybe Indianapolis is better and maybe they're the right play, thinking as a contrarian.
02:45But I just – in watching all 22 of the Houston game and watching the game live against Kansas City,
02:54this is the easiest matchup we've had in four games.
02:58It's not a bad football team.
03:01I'm not saying that.
03:02But, man, our defense has been up against it for two straight weeks.
03:06I mean, you're going to be hard-pressed to go back-to-back weeks against the kind of threats that
03:13Seattle and Dallas pose.
03:16And defensively, you came up with three turnovers last week.
03:20Dallas, you didn't come up with much at all.
03:22It was pretty much a disaster.
03:25I can't see it being a disaster in any realm of possibility on Sunday.
03:31It's just a completely different team that they're facing.
03:34And next week will be as well, no matter who's the quarterback.
03:39So, this is an opportunity the next two weeks for the defense to really step up.
03:44It stepped up last week with three takeaways and another opportunity to really be a big part of bringing this
03:51season, you know,
03:53from 0-2 and the feeling of doom and gloom back into play in a major way.
03:59This will be a much different matchup and, I think, a much easier matchup than the last two.
04:05Brian and La Plata.
04:06Brian, go ahead.
04:09Hey, Kev.
04:10What's up?
04:10What's up?
04:12Hey, yeah, I think bitching.
04:15Well, not bitching.
04:16But holding out Jaden Daines for another week was a good call.
04:20Gives him another week.
04:21And getting Lou Vubak is very important to me because he generates a lot of pressure.
04:25I think he probably generates the most, you know, as far as that defensive front.
04:29But I have a question for you about Jaden Daniels, if I may ask.
04:34Do you remember when Kirk Cousins threw the interception in that game against the Giants?
04:40I believe Cooley at that point said they should have offered the contract.
04:44Brian, do you think if this was next year at this time, it would be good business or save money
04:49to offer him a contract now?
04:51Looks like Jaden Daniels is still in some contract pressure.
04:54They can't offer it to him now.
04:56The first opportunity is after the third season.
05:00If we was at that next year.
05:01If we was at this point next year, God forbid, hopefully we're not.
05:04But if we were.
05:05I think there's a chance he'll have the contract in January or February of the upcoming 2027 offseason.
05:12It's the first opportunity that you can actually offer a contract extension to a player on a rookie deal.
05:18Oh, that's a league rule that they can't offer it now.
05:21I'm sorry?
05:22So that's a league rule that they can't offer it now.
05:25Yeah, they can.
05:26You have to have three seasons completed before.
05:29You've got to be three seasons into your rookie deal before you can get a contract extension.
05:35Correct.
05:35So the offseason will be either contract extension or fifth-year option.
05:43Those will be the two choices.
05:44And, of course, what happens over the next three months will be a big part of what they decide to
05:52do.
05:52I personally believe that whether it's in this offseason or after 2028, he's going to get a contract extension from
06:00this franchise and a big one.
06:03And the reason is you just don't have talents like this at that position that come around very often.
06:09And you've got to, you know, lock those guys up.
06:12So, yeah, but you can't do it now, to answer your question.
06:15All right?
06:16He's pushing to get back on the field because of the value of that contract right now?
06:20Or he's going to get it anyway?
06:22Is that what you think?
06:23Well, I think he's just pushing to get back out onto the field because he's a competitor and he doesn't
06:27want to let his teammates down.
06:29And he can play.
06:30And I think basically what we've learned here, especially from his press conference in particular yesterday, you know, where he,
06:38you know, went to the brace and said that surgery wasn't discussed and that surgery didn't need to be done
06:44ASAP.
06:44I think what they said to him is, look, it wasn't as traumatic an injury.
06:48You can wear the brace, but you're going to have to wear it at this degree or this fitting setting.
06:53So you can't extend the arm and we'll reconvene at the end of the season to see whether or not
07:00surgery makes sense.
07:01And I think it will make sense, actually, when the season's over and it'll be a three to six month
07:06deal and it'll be back and ready to go in 2028.
07:09That assumes that there are no other injuries along the way.
07:12That assumes that he doesn't dislocate the elbow again.
07:14But he believes, based on the way that he's going to wear the brace, that they've essentially told him the
07:20elbow's protected.
07:21And the orthopedic surgeon that we had on, you know, last week, essentially said he should get fitted with a
07:28brace that doesn't allow him to extend the left arm completely.
07:32And he admitted yesterday that he's going to wear a brace that won't allow him to extend the left arm
07:38fully, which is the more vulnerable position for a dislocated elbow.
07:44So that's where we are.
07:46I don't think he's he's not coming back to play for a contract.
07:49I think, actually, in some ways you could make the case that if he didn't play anymore this year and
07:54it was just the elbow and he got the and he got the elbow surgically repaired, that you could make
07:59the case for the contract even more so.
08:01If anything, he's putting putting himself at risk for the contract by going back out there and playing.
08:07Thanks, Brian.
08:08That's the way I see it.
08:09Kevin in Arlington.
08:10Kevin, go ahead.
08:12Hey, Kev.
08:13Thank you for taking my call.
08:14Sure.
08:15On Mariota going on Sunday, this team is going to protect its prize asset probably to a fault.
08:24I don't know if he could play or not, but I think we can win with Mariota.
08:30I think the thing about Mariota, he has to go back and see, particularly here with Washington, is he plays
08:37loose and free when he's got the lead.
08:39We got to get the lead.
08:41We got to play the lead.
08:42We got to hold the lead.
08:43That means not turning the ball over, and that means on defense, and you've alluded to it, look, Daniels and
08:50Jonathan, those two guys are the key threats to our defense.
08:55And finally, we have people who can set the edge.
08:57We finally have a front seven, especially when Duran wants to play, that can suppress the run.
09:03So I think it's going to come down to turnovers, and can we continue to excel in the front seven
09:12in containing the run?
09:14I think that's the key to the game.
09:16I think you said something, too, that makes total sense to me, and I haven't thought about this before.
09:21I don't think Mariota's engineered a comeback for us, right?
09:27I don't think so, Kevin.
09:28A comeback of any sort.
09:29I agree.
09:31I think he plays so much better with the lead.
09:34Yeah.
09:34I think that that is – I think when Mariota's pressured to just be a dropback and just throw the
09:41football, that's not what you want.
09:43You want, you know, no worse than a one-score game either way with Mariota in a quarterback.
09:49So everything's on the table.
09:51By the way, you could say that about 95% of the quarterbacks in the NFL.
09:57But I don't – I was thinking about all of the games he started last year.
10:02They, you know, they had opportunities, but there was – that's when it became problematic for him when they got
10:09down.
10:10So good point on that one.
10:13Appreciate that.
10:14I've got to get to a break.
10:15301-230-0980.
10:17Are you happy with the decision that the team has made to start Marcus Mariota on Sunday?
10:23By the way, let me just be clear on this.
10:25My assumption is they were told, hey, another week helps and another week of practicing with the brace so that
10:35he gets comfortable with it is a big help as well.
