The U.S. military launched airstrikes and Iran retaliated following the crash of an Army helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz that U.S. President Donald Trump blamed on the Islamic Republic.
Transcript
00:01Attacks are again shaking the Middle East today.
00:04This comes after the United States claimed that Iran smashed a drone into an Apache attack helicopter,
00:10causing it to crash off the coast of Oman.
00:13Now, this morning, the U.S. military had launched strikes across southern Iran.
00:18Iranian state media announced that there had been blasts in Qashem Island
00:23and near Bandar Abbas and other sites in the country,
00:27near the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf
00:30that Iran has maintained a chokehold over for months now, disrupting global energy supplies.
00:36In retaliation, Iran has launched attacks targeting the island nation of Bahrain
00:41as well as the small Mideast nation of Kuwait.
00:44Air defense systems were heard going off in both of those countries,
00:47and it's unclear what damage has been done.
00:50Meanwhile, Iran has also claimed an attack targeting Jordan.
00:53That kingdom near Israel had seen attacks targeting it in the Iran war.
01:00This would be the first since the April ceasefire took effect.
01:03And it also underlines both Jordan's continued hosting of American aircraft
01:08as well as that kingdom's precarious position between Israel and Iran
01:12as those two sides had been attacking each other earlier this week as well.
01:17All this put together again calls into question efforts to try to reach a more permanent ceasefire
01:22in the Iran war that started all the way back in February.
01:27Meanwhile, it just remains unclear if there will be more retaliation, more attacks in the Middle East,
01:32and all this is putting new pressure on those talks which so far haven't had any major results.
