Pope Leo XIV is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days at Rome’s Gemelli hospital to remove a lung nodule detected at an early stage. The 71-year-old pope announced the planned procedure during his Sunday blessing, saying doctors found a small, well-localized nodule.

00:47a blessing in disguise to remove that cancer before it has a chance to grow or to spread.

01:02A lung nodule is a finding on a radiographic study and most of these are benign.

01:08But when there's sufficient concern, surgery is something we often pursue to provide a

01:13definitive diagnosis.

01:15If this does turn out to be an early stage lung cancer, surgery lung can also be curative.

01:25It may seem that way, but for small nodules, a needle biopsy can often be difficult and

01:30depending on the location, may not provide enough information.

01:34In these cases, surgery itself, while it may seem dramatic, is often very safe, very straightforward

01:39with a rapid recovery.

01:48A longer trip can be taxing, but in someone who's otherwise healthy, I think with that

01:52time of recovery and based on the timelines, a trip like that would absolutely be possible.
