Petronas will supply Japanese utility firm JERA with 2 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per annum under a 20-year deal, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said at a press conference on Wednesday (June 10) following a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi.

The agreement, which will begin in 2028, comes as Japan looks to beef up its energy reserves to cope with a global LNG crunch linked to the war in Iran

Anwar is on a three-day working visit to Tokyo, where he has been meeting with government and industry officials.

00:00Dear Prime Minister Takeichi, and thank you on behalf of my delegation for this wonderful and great welcome on your
00:09invitation.
00:10And as you know, once you invite, it's very difficult for us to say no.
00:15Now, your power is an initiative, as much as your Japan's growth strategy is being followed very closely by us,
00:23including the cabinet.
00:24You see how influential you are. We have to deliberate every point you raise so that we are not left
00:32behind.
00:33We understand exactly your power is an initiative.
00:37So, we have just concluded the long-term LNG sales and purchase agreement between Petronas and Gera to supply 2
00:47million tons per annum of LNG for a period of 20 years.
00:53Beginning in 2028, this is a remarkable feat and a success in terms of a trust and collaboration between the
01:03two great friendly countries.
