Transcript
00:00Our family loves to look for weather
00:02There's so much we want to know
00:04Weather Hunters!
00:06That's us! Weather Hunters!
00:08Let's go! We love discovering together
00:10What is rain? Why does it snow?
00:13Weather Hunters!
00:14Weather Hunters!
00:16Round the world, around the corner
00:18Our adventure's just begun
00:20Could be cloudy, could be sunny
00:22The kids! The forecast calls for fun!
00:25Whatever the weather
00:26We're in it together
00:28Weather Hunters!
00:32Properly prepared
00:36Guy flying is so much fun!
00:39Right, Camulus?
00:41Wow!
00:42Look at that guy go!
00:43You're really making it soar
00:45I'm not doing it, Lily. The wind is
00:48It really is windy
00:50But it's so strange
00:51Windy days usually feel cooler
00:54But it's so muggy today
00:56I feel hot and sticky
00:58I know!
00:59It reminds me of the air in that rainforest we visited
01:02Mom and Dad said the way it felt
01:04Was called humid
01:06Hey!
01:10Hang on, Benny! I'm coming!
01:12This wind feels different from how it usually blows
01:17Hmm...
01:17The wind speed has gone up to 25 miles per hour
01:21It's not normally this strong and fast
01:24I wonder why
01:26Whoa! I don't know why
01:28But it's blowing my kite all over the place
01:31I'll help you, Benny
01:35I got it!
01:37Oops! I don't got it
01:39Lynn! You were strong!
01:42But we are stronger!
01:45I love seeing my kids having fun with a kite
01:48But let's not get carried away
01:54Dad!
01:55Can you help us catch it before it does get carried away?
01:58I'll let it!
02:00Whoa!
02:02Whoa!
02:03Whoa!
02:04I've got this, Kumus!
02:06Whoa!
02:08Whoops!
02:10Uh-oh!
02:12There goes my kite
02:15Oh!
02:16I thought I had it, buddy
02:17I am so sorry it blew away
02:20It's okay, Dad
02:20But...
02:22Wow!
02:23Look how high it's going!
02:25That's amazing!
02:27It really is!
02:32Aw!
02:33It's stuck in the tree!
02:35We'll have to get it after the wind's calmed down
02:38There's definitely something different about this weather
02:41We noticed that!
02:42The wind is sometimes strong and sometimes not
02:45And the air feels humid
02:47Yeah, Dad!
02:48What's going on?
02:51Whoa!
02:52Nice save, Mom!
02:53Mm-hmm!
02:54First the kite, and now the pods!
02:56What's going on?
02:57The wind is blowing even stronger now!
02:59The wind is gusty
03:00That means, suddenly, the wind gets really strong for a short time
03:04Right!
03:05What is up with this weather?
03:07The wind is gusty and the air is hot and sticky
03:10That is an excellent scientific observation, Corky
03:14Look at the sky!
03:16When we came outside this morning, the sky was just hazy
03:19But these clouds moved in really fast
03:21Yeah!
03:23And they're so low and dark
03:25Brilliant scientific observations, kids
03:28Benny's right
03:29I've never seen the sky fill up with clouds this vast
03:33Me either!
03:34And the cumulus clouds have turned into cumulonimbus clouds!
03:39And speaking of cumulus, look at our cumulus!
03:46Hmm, cumulus is sniffing the air and acting like he does when he senses a storm coming
03:52It's like he heard the weather forecast and knows what's coming
03:56But he can't really do that, right?
03:59Now, cumulus doesn't understand the weather forecast that folks like us give
04:03But he's definitely sensing a big change in the weather
04:07We came out here to tell you that our town is under a hurricane watch
04:11We need to watch for a hurricane?
04:13That's right!
04:15There's a hurricane approaching, which is causing all the strange weather you kids have noticed
04:20And all the flying flowerpots
04:23Hurricanes can be really strong, can't they?
04:26That's kind of scary
04:27Hurricanes are large, strong storms that can cause a lot of damage
04:31But there are a lot of things people can do to be prepared and stay safe
04:36That's why I'm on my way to the TV station to report on the hurricane
04:40And let folks know how to weather the storm
04:43Will you be safe down at the TV studio?
04:46I sure will
04:47You know what I say when big weather's on its way
04:50The more you're prepared, the less you'll be scared
04:54So, can we get prepared for the hurricane too?
04:57Wait, what even is a hurricane?
05:00Come on kids, I'll show you
05:05A hurricane is a very large and windy storm that can bring lots of rain and thunder
05:11The winds and storm clouds circle around a calm center, which scientists call the eye
05:18The eye? Does that mean that hurricanes can see us?
05:23No, hurricanes can't see anything because they're not alive, they're just weather
05:28That's right, in the center of the hurricane, the eye, the winds are very calm
05:33And while hurricanes can't see us, we can see them with all sorts of different weather technology
05:39Like how I measure wind speed with my anemometer?
05:43Exactly like that, Lily
05:44Wind speeds during a hurricane can be at least 74 miles per hour
05:49But can be even faster depending on how strong the storm is
05:53Wow, 74 is faster than the speed limit signs on the highway
05:58No wonder Benny's kite blew away
06:00Well, the wind here isn't going 74 miles per hour yet
06:04But yes, it's getting faster
06:08This morning, the wind was barely a breeze
06:10But this afternoon, it's all the way up to 35 miles per hour
06:15Strong enough to blow around the flower pot and watering can
06:20So, the approaching hurricane is what's making the wind so strong and gusty?
06:24And why the air feels so damp and thick?
06:27Because a hurricane is coming?
06:29Yes, to all of that
06:31And this is how we show people what's happening
06:34It's called a tracking cone
06:37This tracking cone shows all the possible places the hurricane might go
06:42And might affect people in that area
06:45See, it's shaped like an ice cream cone
06:48And the storm is at the bottom
06:50So that means the wider part is where the hurricane is going?
06:53That's right
06:55But why is it getting bigger?
06:58Is the hurricane growing?
06:59No, this picture doesn't mean it's growing
07:02It just means we're less certain about which way the storm is going to go
07:07We're here and the hurricane could go anywhere from this spot over to this spot
07:13We track the hurricane and all of the places it might go
07:17So that folks in all possible directions can be prepared
07:21But what if it comes here, Dad?
07:23We go inside when there's thunder and lightning
07:25But what do we do about a hurricane?
07:28When a hurricane is coming, it's super important to be prepared
07:31And that's why I'm going into the TV station to track Hurricane Ethan and help folks get ready for it
07:39And we should be preparing here
07:41Let's start by bringing this stuff inside the garage
07:48Hurricane Ethan? I've got a friend named Ethan
07:51But if the hurricane isn't alive, why does it have a name?
07:55We name hurricanes because sometimes more than one forms at the same time
08:01Naming them helps people be clear on which one might be headed their way
08:06Are you sure you'll be safe at the TV studio, Dad? Will the hurricane go there?
08:10Lily, hurricanes can be unpredictable
08:13So we do our best to collect data and track where the hurricane is going
08:17And how it is or isn't changing
08:20But I will do everything to stay safe
08:22And even a small change in direction means big changes for the people in its path
08:29They can change direction?
08:30A little bit, yeah
08:32And if they move over land or cool water, they can get weaker or even fall apart
08:38If they do get weak or fall apart, then they're called a tropical storm
08:44That's right
08:44And even though they're not as big and strong as a hurricane
08:48They still can cause a lot of damage and flooding
08:51So that's why it's important to prepare
08:55No matter which direction the hurricane goes, I'm going to be fine, kids
08:59The studio is always prepared for a weather emergency
09:03We have plenty of supplies, like extra water and food
09:06So I'll be back as soon as I can
09:10Bye, Dad
09:11Good luck
09:12See you soon, Al
09:13Be safe
09:13And we'll do our part by preparing for Hurricane Ethan here
09:18Hurricane Ethan? Are all hurricanes named after boys?
09:21Hurricane names alternate between male and female
09:24And they go in alphabetical order
09:26So the next hurricane will be a girl's name starting with F?
09:30Right
09:31So it could be Hurricane Flora
09:33Or Hurricane Felicity
09:35Or Hurricane Funky Doodle
09:38Funky Doodle?
09:39You know someone named Funky Doodle?
09:42My friend Ethan's cat is named Funky Doodle
09:45And it's a girl cat
09:47That's awesome, Betty
09:49But for now, let's just focus on preparing for Hurricane Ethan
09:53We'll make sure this whole family is safe
09:56And we'll all help
09:57What do we do next, Mom?
09:58Let's bring this stuff inside the garage
10:13Good job bringing everything inside, kids
10:16This will keep them from getting broken
10:18And make sure they don't blow out of our yard
10:20And damage other people's property
10:22A hurricane can blow away heavy things, not just kites?
10:26Yes, that's why it's so important to prepare
10:31The wind is really getting stronger
10:33I'm glad it's outside
10:37Well, it's mostly outside
10:41Right
10:42And speaking of outside
10:44Let's go make sure everything in the front yard is put away
10:51There's nothing around these bushes that can blow away
10:54Nothing on the porch
10:55What about the birds and other animals?
10:58If a hurricane is strong enough to blow furniture and plants around
11:01How will they stay safe?
11:03Maybe we should bring them all inside
11:05That's a fun idea, Benny
11:07I wish we could
11:08Pets need to be inside, Benny
11:11But wild animals know how to stay safe outside
11:14Right, Mom?
11:15That's right
11:16Animals know how to stay safe by finding shelter inside of trees
11:19Empty buildings
11:21Or the holes in the ground where they live
11:24Animals are pretty smart
11:25Right, Cumulus?
11:29And now, we've got to be smart, too
11:32Let's finish preparing
11:33Then we can go to our shelter from the hurricane
11:35Our house
11:40What about people who have to work outside?
11:43Like Miss Hughes?
11:44Hi, Hunters!
11:45Are you all prepared for the big storm?
11:48The outside of our house is ready
11:49We're heading inside to make sure we know where the emergency supplies are
11:53But what about you?
11:56Is your mail truck hurricane-proof?
11:58No, but I won't be out in my truck
12:00I'm on my way home
12:02And I'm all ready for Hurricane Ethan
12:04You are?
12:05What did you do to get ready?
12:07Well, as soon as I heard there was a hurricane coming
12:10I wrote down a plan
12:12Then, I checked off everything on my list, one by one
12:16Let's see, what did I do?
12:19Oh, I gathered storm supplies
12:22Made sure I had plenty of food and water
12:25And brought in my outdoor plants and yard furniture
12:28We did all of that stuff, too
12:30Well, the outside stuff
12:32Wow, you've really got this
12:34I'm a little scared by this hurricane
12:36Are you scared at all?
12:38Maybe a little concerned
12:40Because hurricanes can be serious
12:43But like your dad always says
12:45The more you're prepared
12:46The less you'll be scared
12:48And now, I'm prepared to get home and take shelter
12:52Bye, Miss Hughes
12:53Bye, Miss Hughes
12:54Come on, kids
12:55Let's make sure we have everything we need for the storm
13:03Storm tracking time
13:04Part of being prepared is getting as much information as we can about the hurricane
13:09Right, Mom?
13:10Yes, Lily
13:11Understanding things like hurricanes can help you worry less
13:15Because you know what to expect
13:16And that tells you how to prepare
13:19Al Hunter here with your Hurricane Ethan tracking update
13:22Now, as you can see, the tracking cone has moved and its shape has changed
13:27The hurricane is changing direction a little
13:30So the strongest part of it might not hit this area here
13:33Oh, look
13:34Your dad's forecasting that the hurricane's path might not take it over our neighborhood
13:39Woohoo!
13:41That's good, right?
13:43That's very good
13:44Well, Dad said that this one probably won't go over our neighborhood
13:48But he didn't say that it won't for sure
13:51Maybe we should be ready just in case
13:53That is an excellent idea, Lily
13:56The hurricane has changed direction
13:58But there still could be strong winds and lots of rain even far away from the center of the storm
14:03Well, let's see
14:05We know that the outside is prepared
14:07And the wild animals will know how to stay safe
14:10Yeah, and Miss Hughes went home, so she'll be safe too
14:14But what about our other neighbors, like Miss Joyce?
14:17Good thinking, Lily
14:18Let's walk over there and make sure that she's prepared
14:25Are you sure you don't want to come and stay with us at our house, Miss Joyce?
14:29Oh, no, thank you, Lily
14:31I used a checklist to make sure I'm all prepared for Hurricane Ethan
14:35I've got plenty of supplies in case the power goes out
14:39And I'm even ready in case of flooding
14:43A flood?
14:44Isn't that water?
14:45I thought hurricanes were about wind
14:48Whoosh!
14:50Miss Joyce is right
14:52Hurricanes can cause flooding, too
14:54Yes, Dad said hurricanes are windy and rainy
14:58Oh, that's right
15:00I forgot about the rain
15:01Some hurricanes bring so much rain that the ground around our houses can't absorb it all
15:07And sometimes the hurricane's winds push ocean water onto the land, which causes floods
15:13Wow!
15:14Look how big those puddles are!
15:16They can be so big that the water gets inside the house
15:20Exactly!
15:22But I'm prepared to block the bottoms of my doors so water can't get in
15:27So I'm all ready to ride out the storm, safe and dry
15:32It sounds like you've thought of everything
15:35Being prepared is the best way to be safe
15:39Now thanks for checking up on me, but it's time to make sure that you're safe, too
15:43You got it!
15:45Let's go, weather hunters!
15:52Okay, now that we know what the storm might be like, I can use my tablet to make a list
15:57of everything we need to stay safe in the house
15:59Like Miss Joyce did!
16:00That's a good idea, Lily!
16:02While you're at it, make a checklist for what we'll need if we have to evacuate, too
16:07What's evac?
16:09Evac?
16:10Evacuate!
16:11It means go to a safer place, like when we evacuate our school buildings during a fire drill
16:15That's right!
16:17Sometimes people go to a school, a meeting hall, or another place that's big enough to hold a lot of
16:22people
16:23and sturdy enough to stand up to a hurricane
16:26Sometimes they even go to a different town
16:28A whole different town?
16:30We won't have to do that, will we, Mom?
16:33Not if the hurricane goes past us, like the picture of the tracking cone showed it will
16:37Now, let's use the checklist to make sure we have all our supplies
16:41Okay, flashlights and lanterns in case the lights go out?
16:46Check!
16:47And extra batteries for them, and for the radio
16:52Food that won't spoil
16:53Yep, we've got lots of canned foods
16:56Got it!
16:57Oh, and a can opener?
16:59Oh!
17:01Wouldn't that be terrible if we had cans and cans of food and no can opener?
17:05I'm getting hungry just thinking about it
17:10There's a can opener out here in the kitchen drawer
17:13Thanks, Corky!
17:14And plenty of water?
17:15Yep, we've got enough for all of us in the kitchen
17:18Water? Check!
17:21Hmm, backpacks all filled with supplies, dry clothes, and a first aid kit?
17:25That's a great big check!
17:27I've got all of that, plus any medicines we might need, all packed and ready to go
17:32And I even have a bag for Cumulus, with bowls for his food and water, his harness, his leash, and
17:40his favorite toy
17:42Wow, Benny, that's some super extra preparedness
17:45Yeah, you just made this list even better
17:51I think that's everything
17:56What do we do now, Mom?
17:58We should go into the kitchen, so that we're away from these big windows
18:05We're as prepared as we can be
18:07Now we wait for the storm to be over
18:09And we can play a game?
18:11Sure!
18:12We can definitely have some fun while we keep an eye on what the hurricane is doing
18:38I think the storm is getting weaker
18:40It's really lucky that we didn't lose power
18:43So let's check in on your dad's weather forecast
18:45Yeah, let's see dad
18:51Hurricane Ethan has moved out over the ocean, friends
18:54The folks on the coast all evacuated before it passed over them
18:58So they're safe
18:59This is good news
19:00Yes!
19:01We're receiving many reports of power outages
19:04But very few reports of damaged buildings
19:06And thankfully, no reports of injuries
19:08And that's mostly because folks like you kept track of the hurricane
19:12You made a plan, you prepared, and helped each other through it
19:17You bet we did!
19:18We did it team!
19:20Yeah!
19:21We did it!
19:27Thank you so much for all of your help
19:30And thank you, Al, for your weather report
19:34Knowing what to expect during the storm made such a difference to us all
19:39It was my pleasure, Ms. Joyce
19:44Ms. Hughes, you made it through the storm
19:47Yes, I came through just fine
19:50Thanks to your dad's fine weather forecasting
19:53You know, when you're prepared and helping each other
19:56Things like hurricanes are a lot less scary when you have people around who care
20:00And prepare
20:02Bye!
20:03Bye!
20:07Alrighty, I think Ms. Joyce's yard is all done
20:10Now, time to go clean up at the hunter house
20:20Look!
20:22The bird made it safely through the storm
20:24And look what else made it
20:28My kite!
20:31Got it!
20:33Woohoo!
20:36Here you go, Benny
20:37It's a little worse for wear, but I think we can fix it up
20:41Thanks, Dad
20:42I'm just glad we got to experience something as scary as a hurricane safely
20:47Me too, Lily
20:48The storm changing its path was great
20:51But what else helped, kids?
20:53The more you're prepared, the less you'll be scared
20:56Exactly
20:57Now, who's prepared to do a special weather hunters hurricane preparedness report?
21:04I am
21:04Yeah!
21:06We're the weather hunters with a special hurricane report
21:10I'm Benny, and here's my sister Lily
21:13Hurricanes are big storms that bring a lot of wind and rain
21:16And it's important to prepare
21:18Stay safe in your house or another shelter
21:21And help your neighbors clean up after
21:23I'm Corky
21:24The best way to stay calm when stormy weather is coming is to prepare for it
21:28That means listening to the helpers in your neighborhood
21:31Like weather forecasters, so you know what to expect
21:35Make a plan for how to stay safe at home
21:37And another plan for if you need to evacuate to a safer place
21:41Staying at home means you'll need flashlights, lanterns, a radio, and extra batteries for them
21:47Also food that doesn't need to be refrigerated
21:50And lots of fresh water
21:51And don't forget supplies for your pets
21:54They'll need food and water too
21:56Packing a small bag or backpack ahead of time will make it easier and safer if you have to evacuate
22:02Which means go to a safer place
22:04And don't forget to check on any neighbors who might need your help to prepare
22:08Once the hurricane passes, neighbors can help each other clean up
22:13So it's natural to feel worried if a hurricane is coming your way
22:17But hurricanes can be a little less scary when you learn about what to expect, make a plan, prepare, and
22:23help each other through it
22:24And remember, whatever the weather, we're in it together
22:29And we know about it
22:30We're in the weather
22:30And we're out there
22:39So we can catch up with our goth, we're able to prepare, make a plan, and do it
22:53And we can catch up with her
22:56And we can see her on the other end
22:56And we'll be in it together
22:56We can catch up with our whole family
22:57And we can see her on the other end
